J. Williams

On the Road to Death's Door by M. J. Williams is a story about a group of friends getting together in a small Wisconsin town. The reunion was setup to help with Father Victor's scandalous book. When they all go out for dinner, and the Father doesn't show, the mystery begins.

Emily is a retired police officer. Stan is her scholarly husband. Jeremiah is running for office. His wife is Glenna. Malcolm and Audrey are a pair too.

Emily and Stan are on an RV excursion to see their daughter. Before the trip, Emily stopped at a few garage sales to hunt down some treasures. She ended up with more than she bargained for. Sheriff Pelletier and Emily are on a mission to solve the mystery.

The story is like a traditional mystery novel. I love a crime fighting duo such as Sherlock and Holmes, Inspector Lewis and Detective Sergeant Hathaway and the like. There are also notable solo detectives like Miss Marple, Luther, Wallander, Hercule Poirot, etc.

The actuality that I love a good mystery makes me like the book. I appreciate the wit too. The matter that Sheriff Pelletier calls Emily "Miss Marple" is amusing.

A good mystery never gives the answer away until the end. I couldn't figure the puzzle out which made me keep reading. I would definitely read more in the series.

Sihpromatum - I Grew My Boobs in China by Savannah Grace is a memoir series about one family's journey across the globe. The story features a teen girl named Savannah, her mother and two older siblings. What happens when a fourteen year old girl's parents divorce, and the rest of the family decides to go on a year long adventure?

It is a memoir, so I can't critique it like a fictional novel. These are actual people. This is an amazing story that is someone's life.

This memoir is ingeniously, flawlessly written. I loved the writing style, voice. I was there on the journey, apart of the family. Most people will never get a chance to travel to these places. This is your ticket.

It is quite an emotional read. You get to experience the world through a teenager's eyes. The traumas of selling your house, giving away a beloved pet, and leaving friends behind was just the beginning.

The hysteria of Savannah having to use the bathroom in a hole in the ground was horrifying and comical. I can relate as a camper. I own a P-Style, which is a female urination device, that allows one to stand while going.

The food options were horrendous! I am a vegetarian and a picky eater. I would never last!

The many friendly people the family met was touching. I nearly cried toward the end. I cannot wait for the next installment in the series!

Catering to the Italian Playboy by Tamelia Tumlin is a romance novel about a lady who had a one night stand six years ago with a wealthy hotel owner named Maximus Rinaldi. Sophie Westbrook managed avoiding him until she popped out a cake in a G-string right in the middle of his high-powered meeting with Chinese investors. Oops!

Sophie doesn't want a man like her father, and Max inhibits all the traits she isn't looking for. Max doesn't know if he can handle the stress of a relationship. He grew up an orphan and had no family. Sophie has a secret that will change Max's tune.

I enjoyed Catering to the Italian Playboy. I liked the story. The pace was steady. The novel explained Sophie was a fiery redhead, and the female on the cover looks blonde. She could be considered strawberry blonde though.

My only other critique is multiple uses of the same expressions. It's just a pet peeve of mine. I could literally read the thesaurus.

Those are minor things. I have a love-hate relationship with romance novels. Overall, I really liked the story. I recommend it!

Ringling the Last Laugh by Michael Lancaster is a fictional story about the Ringling brothers and how they got into the circus business. It is based on a true story though. Does John get the last laugh?

The characters are the six brothers and other family, friends, enemies, etc. The point of view changes, but it is mostly from John's pov. The story is about how John gave birth to a dream and then watched his pie in the sky be eaten by backbiters. In the end, John made a pivotal decision right before he died that would affect his family years after his death.

I really enjoyed the story. I love the time period. The story is set in the early 1900s. I love how the book is divided. There are sections in each chapter. The first one contains a section for different family members. From there the chapters and sections progress to how the Ringling Brother's Barnum and Bailey Circus, The Greatest Show on Earth came into being.

It is also a great history lesson. The circus is as American as apple pie. Even though it is fiction, it offers some insight into what actually happened.

Watch Me Disappear by Diane Vanaskie Mulligan is a story about a young adult trying to make the most of her senior year in high school. Lizzie Richards is a sheltered girl who has moved around all of her life. What happens when she moves to town where the girl next door is out of control, a new BFF steals her crush, and she starts disobeying her strict parents’ rules?

Lizzie loves to eavesdrop on Maura by listening to her phone conversations out on the back patio. That is how she stays in the loop. One day Lizzie creates a secret Facebook page. Her mother would totally kill her if she found out. Lizzie meets Missy on Facebook during the summer. Once school starts all kinds of crazy things happen.

I love this story. It reminds me of the Judy Blume and other middle grade books I loved as a kid. Only this is a story about an older girl. The characters were like typical high school friends and foes. The humor was genuine. The pace was spot on. I am sure a lot if us can relate to either having strict parents like Lizzie or being totally wild like Maura or having your mother as a best friend like Missy. It is quite well rounded.

I enjoyed the antics of Lizzie and Maura. The stress of high school relationships was all to real. It is all about the journey of growing up.

http://www.dvmulligan.com

Most Powerful Blood by M. G. Curley is a paranormal story about three friends Will, Bri and, Tina. Bri and Tina go out to a club looking for some fun. Bri makes out with a cute guy in her car at the club. The next morning Bri can't remember what exactly happened. Tina makes up a potion to help Bri remember. There was some biting involved. Bri freaks out and goes home.

Will gets a one word message from Bri that just says "help." Will shows up later to find Bri crouched in a dark corner. Bri explains to Will what happened the night her and Tina went out.

Later on a stranger arrives with a mysterious message. Tina arrives too. The three talk it out. Will decides not to put anyone in danger and goes to the mystery guest's home alone. While Will is away new things develop. Is Bri a vampire? Is Tina a witch? Where's Will? You will have to read it to find out!

Since this is part of a series, I can't 100% judge the book. Usually book one sets the stage, book two is full of action, and book three concludes the story. I like to judge a book by its' ability to be a stand alone novel and as part of a series.

As a stand alone novel, the pace was good. The characters were older, so it was interesting. Normally, you'd expect a YA feel. But the characters were young at heart so to speak. I am always fond of paranormal elements. There's definitely some surprising twists in the plot.

Living Canvas by Karla Brandenburg is a contemporary romance novel with a paranormal element. Audrey MacDougall is a women with a sensitive intuition. She is dealing with the loss of her parents, her best friend getting married, her company going through a transition, and more. What else could go wrong? Oh, yeah. Cinda cancels at the last minute on their trip to Scotland, and Audrey's former boyfriend is having a baby.

Audrey feels like she is never going to get the family she so desperately wants until she meets Greg while on a train in Scotland. The two hit it if off. But what happens when they get back home?

This is a complicated story. Audrey has a lot on her plate. She is falling in love. Her boss is trying to take her out, and I don't mean on a date. Audrey receives a mysterious painting that allows her to traverse its landscape. Don't worry. All of this will make sense.

I have a love-hate relationship with romance novels. It took me a a little while to get into the story. But the writing is good at stringing you along and peaking your interest. I couldn't stop reading. With some romance novels I lose interest in the characters. I didn't lose interest in Audrey. I wanted to know what was up with walking in a painting and if her boss was going to harm her.

I can say that this is an interesting story. I have never read a novel where the character reached such unique feats. The pace was steady. I always have had a soft spot for paranormal elements in stories. While the genre isn't my favorite, I do recommend the book.

Bring a Shovel and a Gun by Rasheed Newson is a story about a man with hyperthymesia. It is a condition where memory is eternal. Ali Reed is in his late twenties. His mother's actions are questionable. Ali's father is never around. His brothers are spiteful. No one sympathizes with Ali's condition. It is no surprise that Ali makes his money by coning people.

Normally, Ali just does his usual tricks. One day things don't go according to plan. A woman that works in one of the many banks that Ali goes to actually remembers him. From that moment on things go extremely off course. There is murder, mayhem, and a lot more.

I think the story is inventive. I have never read a book about a person with hyperthymesia. It is an emotional journey as Ali deals with his childhood and present conditions, plus the crime element made the read hit the bull's-eye. I enjoyed the humor. The characters were realistic. The emotions felt genuine. The pace moved at a steady rate.

I don't enjoy romance novels. I do love stories with a romance element. This is a nice balance of family issues and crime.

I could see this as a movie. Most of my favorite movies are similar in plot like The Bourne series, Lucky Number Slevin, Dead Presidents, and other crime-shoot 'em up flicks.
The cover to the sequel of Shadow of A Dead Star is finally here! The new novel is called RedEye. If you haven't read Shadow of A Dead Star, don't worry there is still time!

"The second in the Wonderland Cycle, my trilogy of dark near-future stories centering around the truth going on behind that hyperconsumerist world gone wrong. This setting, the so-called 'Wonderland' universe, is also the same world in which my most recent novel, BONE WIRES, took place." -Michael Shean

I love the Wonderland, and it is no place for Alice. It is a horrible place filled with gruesome crime and materialism. I think people there would literally cut off your legs to steal your pants.

I also love how we get to meet different people from different parts of the city if you can call them people at this point. Many are half robots or altered in some way with drugs. The city is bizarre too.

"Two years have passed since Agent Thomas Walken and Bobbi January found themselves at the heart of a conspiracy of unimaginable greed and cruelty. The Genefex Corporation remains shrouded in mystery and Bobbi January faces a life of unanswered questions and mounting disillusionment to look forward to. But when she receives a mysterious message from one of Walken's former comrades, she is drawn back onto the trail. Now, Bobbi will find herself newly equipped to discover the truth - about Walken, about Genefex and the Yathi race - and the key to unlocking those secrets rests in the hands of a cyborg terrorist known only as Redeye.

But the road to truth will be a dangerous one, from the glamor of Seattle's ultramodern core to the sprawling wastelands of the Old City and beyond. Alongside a band of lethal comrades, Bobbi will face death and worse amidst urban rot, abandoned subway tunnels, and ultimately the nightmarish halls of the Yathi themselves in a race to stave off what may prove to be the death of humanity itself. For the Mother of Systems will not be denied, and it will take all of Bobbi’s intelligence and wit to stave off annihilation. Drenched in blood and neon, Redeye is a tale of humanity on the edge of a new and terrible reality."

Good Guys Love Dogs by Inglath Cooper is a contemporary romance novel about a New York City father,

Ian McKinley, who moves his son, Luke, to a very small town called Keeling Creek, Virginia while leaving his fiancee behind. Hopefully, this small town experience can get the two closer.

Ian packs up his son and dog, and they hit the road. They settle on a local farm. It doesn't take much time for things to go wrong. The dog has to go to the vet. Ian is matched up at dinner by his neighbors with the local veterinarian named Colby. Luke hates everything in sight. Ian nearly kills himself on a tractor. What was Ian thinking?

Colby has her own problems raising a teen. Lena is full of teenage angst. Lena finds a note written to her mother from her father. Lena has a crush on Luke. But what about her mom and Ian? What's up with that?

Good Guys Love Dogs is a sweet tale of how relationships are not built by a strict set of rules. Family is who you love and not who you're related to. I think it is a story that resonates with the times like the popular TV shows Modern Family and The New Normal.

I thought the characters were real. The pace moved right along. The story was well written. Parents and teens would like this story as it combines family, romance and a teen crush type of scenario.

http://www.inglathcooper.com

Found Objects by Peter Gelfan is a novel about love. It sounds simple. But love is very, very complicated even between two people. What about three or even four people? What about the added stress of kids, neighbors, work, etc. Aldo Zoria is a man with a wife named Erica. Marie and her two children, Dom and Jas, came to live with them as a family when Jonah abandoned them. What happens when Jonah suddenly appears? Can this ménage à trois turn into a ménage à quatre?

I know for some the topic might be quite shocking. But once you get into Aldo's thoughts you begin to understand his justification, fear, and such. Aldo is a very scientific man. He reads, listens to classical music, is a photographer, is marred to Erica, etc. I loved being sucked into this thought process. Reading how Aldo came to terms with their complicated relationship was intriguing.

I also got to see the relationship from the others' point of view. It was truly titillating. I read the ebook in two or three days. I wanted to see if Aldo could accept another male into the relationship, or if he would become a hypocrite. I also wanted to see if Marie was going to stay in the ménage à trois, go back to Jonah, or what. There was so much I wanted to know!

I loved all of the characters. They felt like real people. It was like a good indie movie you'd see on IFC or Sundance. The pace was right. The plot is quite unconventional and thought provoking. Found Objects by Peter Gelfan is compelling!

Other Systems by Elizabeth Guizzetti is a sci-fi story about a teen girl named Abby Boyd Lei. Abby works in a library. She lives on a commune with her family. One day chaos breaks out as strange ships appear in the sky broadcasting a friendly message. Can these beings be trusted?

In the year 3062 Earth isn't so livable. Perhaps these foreign beings can help. They offer to transport health humans to their planet. Abby Boyd Lei, her brother, sister and a friend pass the health tests and are taken to Kipos.

Kipos isn't what the humans thought it would be. They are bought and sold to the locals. Abby is bought by a high ranking official who is desperate to conceive a child. Orchid, Abby's younger sister, is adopted by a loving family. Jin, Abby's brother, and Rory, a friend, is sent to do manual labor.

Abby is forced to birth a child by her master. Once the child is born Abby has no use, so they let her escape. What happens now?

This is a story of adventure to new planets. New discoveries are made. A tale of facing adversity, survival, and family.

I really liked the ebook as a whole. The sci-fi element is interesting. There are detailed accounts of planets, beings, and more. Abby is a teen, so it could also appeal to a YA audience. But there are subjects such as rape and slavery which may be not be suitable for some.

I loved the characters. There are quite a few characters, but they all have defining qualities. The story is clearly written. The pace moves right along. I love space, aliens, finding new species, and stories about teens, so this was right up my alley.
E. Newcomb

Mortal Choices by D. E. Newcomb is a contemporary romance novel with a mystery twist. Amanda Miller is a journalist in town visiting her sister. Amanda quickly learns that strange disappearances are happening. She also makes plans to have dinner one night with an old friend's little brother, Detective Terry Walkingstick, only he isn't so little anymore.

The mystery twist is a nice addition in a romance novel. Sometimes I get bored with the usual couple slowly falling in love. The mystery element causes the pace to be quite fast. The characters are unique. There is an equal balance in this story of romance and mystery-crime. If you like either genre, you will like this book. It is also around two hundred pages, so you can read it pretty quickly.

Besides the mystery and romance elements, there is Amanda's sister, her brother in-law and his family. This is where it gets interesting. Amanda's brother in-law, Doug, begins to have severe mood swings after his father dies. There is an afterword about behaviors associated with bipolar disorder. There are also some helpful links. So this story can help you relate to mental disorders too. I like the way it was presented in the story. It is quite realistic.

Cracks in the Pavement by Martin Hopkins is a story about a young man that feels he has a dull life in the city working the same hours at the same job day in and day out. Dan has some unusual run-ins with the homeless on his way to and from work. Dan and his friends share stories after a long day's work. Dan is trying to get over his former girl friend. Can Dan sort his humdrum life out?

This novel has many different facets. On one level it is a contemporary story about a young man's life. On another level it gets a bit erotic. And then the story goes into a bizarre Poirot-Twilight Zone ruse.

As far as the way the plot progresses it is at a steady pace. The transitions to each segment are smoothly written. Dan is written as a typical twenty-something male. I enjoyed the bizarre Poirot-Twilight Zone element of the novel.

I would recommend this if you like to read novels about society, a story with a twist, mystery-crime elements, inner struggles, etc. So it isn't for the weak of heart or those easily offended.

The Troubleshooter: New Haven Blues by Bard Constantine is a retro-futuristic dystopian story. Mick Trubble has had a bout of bad luck you could say. He owes some dangersome people some money. Luckily, a nice skirt walks into his office and offers him a job for an amount he can't possibly turn down. Now if he can live through the ordeal.

I really like this story. I love the time period. It is like reading a 1930s crime movie. The futuristic element is compelling. There are things like synoids, memory implants and crazy weapons.

The characters are quite amusing. There is a man named Tommy Tsunami, a gangster who wears makeup and a daisy printed outfit, a lady with a wolf, a cowboy, a gang called the Gutter Girls, and more. It is hard not to love such an interesting cast of characters.

There are also many little details that I appreciate. Mick Trubble is a troubleshooter. The whole book written in its own lingo with the definitions at the beginning is impressive.

I love books where you can get lost in its world. I could read tons more novels set in New Haven. The cat's meow!

The Latter History and Subsequent Burning of Little Red Riding Hood by Sean McGrath is a short story about

Little Red Riding Hood. It's not the tale you're use to though! Joan is the last survivor of her coven. And she is blood thirsty.

Joan's Sisterhood is hunted by the Catholic Church. They send wolves out to kill the witches. These are no ordinary wolves though. The Huntsmen are suppose to be on the Sisterhood's side, but everyone has a price. This leaves Joan only one option. Joan plans to destroy the Catholic Church. Will she get the revenge she so desperately seeks?

This is a gritty tale. If you are easily offended, it may not be for you as the story deals with murder, mayhem, a women who disguises herself as a male, homosexuality in the church, and more. I found the story quite shocking at first. It's a fast paced short story, so by the time I reached the end I got over my stupefaction.

The story is quite unique. Also, the ending ties the whole thing together. One word: outlandish!

Liberty Frye and the Witches of Hessen by J.L. McCreedy is a young adult story about a ten year old girl, Liberty Frye, who loves to read and dreams of adventures. Living in Baluhla, Alabama with strict parents isn't much fun, but one day a mysterious girl named Ginny appears. Shortly after Ginny shows up a strange envelope shows up on the doorstep. What's with all these peculiar incidents?

Liberty Frye's parents go all hush-hush. Liberty all of a sudden finds herself in Germany around Christmas time visiting grandparents she never knew she had. But wait! There's more.

Liberty's parents are kidnapped. There's a runaway goose, two shape-shifter birds, an ugly witch, a baker, and a whole cast of bizarre characters. It's endless hoopla that will keep you on the edge of your seat!

I love the story. It reminds me of my favorite middle grade books that I read when I was ten. Only know I enjoy them as an adult. It's a great read for kids and adults alike.

The scene is set around Christmas time, so it's a prefect gift. It's also a great book to read every year. The same thing you do with your favorite holiday movies. Create a tradition with your kids.

Tough Girl by Libby Heily is a story about a young girl who lives in the ghetto. Reggie's mother is mentally ill and disappears one day leaving Reggie to fend for herself. Luckily, Reggie has Tough Girl as her sidekick.

It is a delicate tale. It isn't easy reading about a child with no food and no parents. A young girl who dreams of joining the Army. But Reggie is a tough girl. It's not a name, it's a warning.

Tough Girl by Libby Heily is an imaginative tear-jerking tale. Where a little girl walks the line of two worlds. A place of nothingness. A place full of celestial foreign beings trying to save a life-giving creature.

I really like Heily's inventive style. I always enjoy her stories that have a slightly bizarre edge to them. Where else could you find a story about an intergalactic crime war that involves a man married to to a six-hundred pound woman who is entering a beauty pageant?

The only negative thing I usually have to say about Libby Heily's work is I wish there was more of it. While I wanted more story, it seems just right when I think about it. After all you don't want too much of a good thing.

The characters are interesting. The pace is extremely fast. The emotion you feel for Reggie combined with the whole space element makes it a very unique read. And I always look forward to what Libby is going to come up with next.

Finding Claire Fletcher by Lisa Regan is a story about Detective Connor Parks who mysteriously meets a young lady, Claire Fletcher, one night in a local bar. They share a drink while chatting. As they toast, Claire says, "Let's toast to being found."

Connor Parks is newly divorced and decides to invite this intriguing women to his place. He wakes up to nothing but a note on the table inscribed with an address. The detective in him drives him to this house where he finds more than he could ever have bargained for.

Finding Claire Fletcher is breathtaking. The writing is phenomenal. The characters are well defined. The pace is on point. At one point the story became so real that I wanted to Google "Lisa Regan" and make sure these events didn't actually happen to her.

Child abduction is a serious matter. It is a tragic story, but it's also about overcoming. You get a sneak peak inside what actually happens and the emotions of someone that has been abducted. I think the story could help families who have experienced this reality.

The ebook is only $3.99. I feel like it's a steal. You can't afford to pass this novel up!

The Art of My Life (New Smyrna Beach Series #2) by Ann Lee Miller is a contemporary romance story. Cal is trying to get his life together. He just got out of jail, his best friend hates him, the love of his life has moved on, his mom is always on his case, etc. Besides all that, Cal's grandmother is his drug dealer. Things are not looking so hot.

The novel is set around the New Smyrna Beach area. It involves one family's struggle with drug addiction. Cal is a talented artist with a troubled life. Can Cal get it together or will he lose everything that he has ever loved?

I am very harsh on romance novels. I either love them or hate them, so my opinion is biased. Once Cal and Aly got hijacked I was all in the story. I was all about the mystery-crime element. But the reviews on GoodReads are all great. So I know it's clearly me and not the novel.

I like the cover of the book. I also like the characters. The point of view was refreshing. It's nice to read a romance from the man's side.

I would recommend this novel to those who like to read about personal struggles. I think it's a book that many could relate to. It also has a lot of sailing and art elements. People who enjoy these pastimes would have a preference for this.

Light & Dark: The Awakening of the Mageknight (Light & Dark, #1) by Daniel M. Fife is a fantasy story about a card game called Knights that turns out to be actually based on reality. Danny Firoth and his friends are beginning eighth-grade.

What happens when the new girl, Sabrina, turns out to be half dragon? They all decide they want to go to summer training to become Knights of the Light and battle Shadows after gifted with the sight. While attending White Rock Academy Danny and his friends encounter knights, elves, and all sorts of magical things.

And there's a traitor among them. One will betray the Light and join the Dark. Can the new squires battle such a force?

I really like the story. It's full of magical weapons and beings. I like the age and personality of each character. They all have their little quirks. The pace was well paced yet the book was quite detailed.

It's nicely balanced. A blend of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. It's a fantasy any fan would love.

Few Are Angels (Few Are Angels #1) by Inger Iversen is a paranormal story about Ella Monroe who recently lost her parents. She starts to see and hear things. Is she crazy?

Luckily, Kale explains what's happening. And it's not good. And it's just about unbelievable. But Ella must do what she must do in order to save her best friend and his family.

Kale is a half vampire and half human called a Chory. He insists on protecting Ella from the Dark Prince who is after her visions. But that's not all.

Jace is trying to convince Ella that the Council can save her. Jace is a part of the Council of Immortals who have sworn to protect the Arc. But as they say too many cooks in the kitchen spoils the pot. Will Kale, Jace, or Ella's best friend Alex save her? Can she fight the Dark Prince, Laurent, by herself?

I always try to reject paranormal romance novels. But by the time I reach the middle of the book I am totally sucked into the story. I think it takes me a while to give in to the female character. I have to relate to her mindset. It's not that hard when a love triangle forms.

I liked the mystery of the story. I truly didn't know if Ella was going to run away with Kale, choose Alex over Kale, or what. The ending was a total surprise to me. It went all Stephen King on me. It's like, "Surprise!"

I love the cover of the book. Ella looks how I imagined. And on the second book Kale looks exactly how I imagined too.

It seems a rather quick book. So I am glad there's a book two. I haven't had enough of the characters, and I want to know more about the plot.

What More Could You Wish For by Samantha Hoffman is a story about a woman who recently turned fifty. Libby Carson is a risk taker, but when her dad dies she questions everything. Should she marry? She she color her hair? Should she buy a dog? Is this a midlife crisis?

I really like Libby Carson. She has a great sense of humor. I like that the book is about a slightly older woman. Most novels in this genre are about thirty something women. What More Could You Wish For is witty and out of the ordinary!

I liked the plot of Libby in a love triangle at fifty. The rest of the characters were likeable. The pace was smooth. All in all it was an easy read.

I Forgive You By Jacqueline E. Perry is a contemporary romance novel. The main character is Jordan Maria Velasquez. She is a young woman who struggles with a variety of relationships. Jordan has a best friend named Mia. It's a roller coaster ride of struggles.

I like stories that have characters that could be your friend or that remind you of someone. My life is pretty peachy, so I get my drama from books. I like to see the struggles and triumphs of female characters.

This story is especially good for women who have been in abusive relationships. There's also a religious theme in the book. The battle of desire and moralism. It's a precarious game.

It's also a good way to seek insight into relationships from an outside point of view. I can relate in some ways to Jordan. We all go through complicated relationships. We all have to find our own way.

If you like romance or a religious theme, check out I Forgive You by Jacqueline E. Perry. It'll be out around Thanksgiving. It can at least remind you of what to be thankful for in your own life.
