Our 4th of July Fireworks were a wash (literally), but the next day proved to be a glorious night for fireworks! The boys stayed up well past their bedtime, but they were troopers for their 1st Fireworks Display. What a difference a year makes in flexibility! The evening was filled with activity including a picnic dinner and a long walk with daddy (more on that in a post to follow).

Rain on Our Parade (Again!)

For the second year in a row, the boys sported jackets to the 4th of July Parade.

See last year's picture in the IndyStar for proof:

It's just plain absurd! Usually we are sweating buckets in the Indiana humidity. However, the cooler temps and the rain couldn't dampen our spirits. After all, there were fire trucks, police cars, horses, clowns (not Brooks' favorite), music, and CANDY! Henry learned to unwrap the candy wrappers and help himself, before mama caught him red handed!

Even with the rain, it was a GREAT MEMORY! We love experiencing holidays with our boys, and we're ever so thankful for the freedom of our nation, America!

I started this post a few days ago and intended to post this before your glorious 4th festivities began, but I just plain ran out of time. However these recipes are great ALL SUMMER LONG! I just love how the 4th of July brings out the heart of America. The traditions, the cause that we celebrate, and the history of our nation make it one of my top three favorite holidays. Like many of you, we are taking in a parade, gathering with family, and of course watching fireworks (the boys first) in celebration of our nation's independence.

Of course no American holiday is complete without traditional trimmings and fixin's! I wanted to share a few of my favorite 4th of July menu items with you!

Burgers on the Grill

You simply can't go wrong with McCormick's Grill Mates Montreal Steak Seasoning. Generously sprinkle both sides and work into the patties. Not over spiced...just perfection!

Grilled Corn on the Cob

The secret to grilling these "dandies" is leaving the husks ON! The husks will protect your corn from being chewy and dry. It also gives it a delicious smokey flavor. You can soak the husks for 30 minutes before applying them directly on the grill, but I've skipped this step and it's turned out just as tasty. First remove several of the outer layers of husk, but keep a full layer or two. Then pull back the remaining husks and remove as much of the silk as possible, while leaving the husks in tact. Place on the hot grill. Cover. Turn the corn occasionally, until the husks are charred on all sides, about 15 to 20 minutes.

Mom's Baked Beans

Mix together in a baking dish: 1 Can of Beans (I use Van Camp Pork and Beans), 1/4 c Ketchup, 2 T Brown Sugar, A squirt of Mustard, and a good sprinkle of Minced Onion. Microwave until Hot. Simply Delicious!

Flag Cake

Another festive favorite is to take a pound cake (this was my sister's homemade recipe), top it with whipped cream and add cut up strawberries for the stripes and blueberries for the stars. It's a always crowd pleaser!

Summer Quadyssey: Conner Prairie

Welcome to another Quadyssey episode! This adventure takes place at Conner Prairie, an interactive pioneer village, complete with an Animal Encounters Barn and a Discovery Station for the "Prairie Tykes". Clark started out a little reserved with the animals, but he warmed up with time and exposure. The Discovery Station area was a HUGE hit, as the boys planted and pulled vegetables, prepared a pioneer meal, pretended to milk a cow, and played with trains. It's so fun to observe them in a large indoor play area. Even with lots of space to roam, they tend to flock together and play with one another, moving collectively from one station to the next. It makes keeping track of them, and cleaning up a tad easier!

No adventure is complete without food, so we indulged in some yummy Paradise Cafe grub before returning home for naps. It's definitely one of my favorite finds!

Just An Ordinary Day...

Yet it was FILLED with all sorts of highlights...

1. Hearing Isaac attempting to belt out the "Freeeeeeeee" chorus in Free Falling while it played on the radio.

2. Meeting my friend, Emily, at the park for some social time and giving her a small taste of the hoopla that comes with taking quads out in public, where we were both mistaken as the "quad nannies".

3. Watching the boys pretend together. How cool is that?

4. Meeting Brad for a quick lunch at Chipotle. It's the best "Feed a Family of Six for Under 11 Dollars Meal" out there!

5. Hearing Clark profess his true love for tractors as he watched them out the van window. "Buh-bye Tractor. I Wuv You!"

6. Emailing with my mom. She's on her way to being Mrs. Technology 2009!

7. Laughing at the boys attempt to do step aerobics with an unopened package of diapers.

8. Eating a slice of delicious Apple Pie topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream with my sweetie. There's 3/4s of a pie left. Who's gonna help us finish it off? It's your patriotic duty, after all!

9. Finishing 3 loads of laundry, with about 6 left. Okay, so that's not a highlight, but I'm celebrating the minor accomplishment, nonetheless!

10. And did I fail to mention that the boys ingested their first juice box tonight? They were thrilled to say the least.

It's the little things that make an ordinary days seem not so....ordinary.

It Takes Two, Baby

While I was out grocerying (yes, it's a verb) a few nights ago the coolest thing happened between Isaac and Clark. Here's Brad's account of how it happened:

"Brooks and Henry were on my lap reading a book. Usually, the other two would be hounding me to try to fit all four of their growing rear ends on my lap, but Isaac and Clark were already occupied with something. When I looked up to see what they were doing, my jaw about hit the floor. A father's dreams were coming true right in front of my eyes. I watched them do this for a solid 5 minutes in amazement. Then it hit me to grab the camera and try to attempt to catch it as best as possible with two wiggle worms in my lap. Here's the result:"

That's reality at its best! Interrupted or not, it was a highlight of how brothers can be buddies and a reminder to be thankful that they have each other as God-given playmates.

The boys are so entertained by things with wheels, and if they can ride or push them...even better!

Boys will be boys! You sure don't have to teach them to love boy things. They naturally gravitate to construction equipment, emergency vehicles, anything that moves and makes noise!

These pictures were shared by our friend, Kara, who's hung out with us several Fridays of her summer. The boys adore her and she's wonderful help! Today when we dropped her off they said, "Wuv ewe Kaywa!" Translation: "Love you, Kara!" The feeling is mutual!

PS If you're following me on Twitter, you probably know already that our little sticker chart is going surprisingly well. We were 4/4 this morning - the best case scenario in over a week! Here's hoping our winning streak continues!

To Duct Tape or Not to Duct Tape?

Please excuse this bit of a diaper rant....

You know the developmental milestone of clothing removal?

My boys have it MASTERED!

Sleepsack, Pants, Shirt, Diaper, Every Stinkin' Article of Clothing!

And apparently it hasn't quite sunk in that clothing is REQUIRED during nap/night times. The sleepsacks had been our saving grace prior to now. We've tried wearing them backwards and pinning down the zipper, but they've resorted to a new Houdini-maneuver of removal by slipping their arms out of the holes, leaving it completely unzipped and stepping out. Little boogers! I don't think there's a zipper, snap, or contraption they couldn't figure out except for dear ole duct tape. It worked wonders in the past for the McNulty's with their "3 Levels of Security". Let's review those levels of progression, shall we?

1.Place a nice strip of duct tape over the two tabs in the front.

2. Wrap the duct tape fully around the waist.

3. Wrap duct tape around the waist then lasso between the legs.

So I have a written plan of action, thanks to my veteran quad mama sista, but I feel like making one last ditch effort before I become a lifetime stockholder in 3M. Which explains my excursion tonight to Michael's to buy a graph-lined poster board and smiley face stickers. Instead of exclusively disciplining the diaper remover, I'm making an effort to reward those who keep their diapers in tact during crib time. My plan is to hang their chart on the back of their room door, as a visual motivator while they are in their cribs. It does no harm in trying, right?

(Attention 3M, now would be an optimal time to open all production lines and operate at maximum capacity at the duct tape factory. Hi, Dids, if you are reading!)

I'll let you know how it goes, and if you have further ideas, solutions, or you just can completely relate/sympathize, I'm all ears!

While we are on the diapering baby bottoms topic, could I add that, quote, "Holy Smokes, Huggies Little Swimmers Diapers are costing me a small fortune!" Sure they are great for the pool and our water adventures, but come on people, 7.99 (discounted cost with a 1.50 coupon) for a bag of 11, when the package says 12, is quite the hefty investment! That's almost 75 cents a diaper x 4 for each water excursion! Thankfully this is our last summer for these pricey disposables!

Alright, that's all I got tonight...Continue on with your normal feces-free night!

I cannot match the words he wrote for my Mother's Day Post or really even begin to describe how blessed four boys are to have such a loving, respectable, father in their lives. "In this crazy life, and through these crazy times" you have displayed gentleness, patience, joy, perseverance, and a sense of humor. Thank your daily sacrifices to serve our family.

We both want to thank our own fathers in our lives, as well. Our boys are "4tunate" to be loved by 2 grandpas, who are wonderful examples in their lives. You influence and touch our lives in many ways. We are truly thankful for you!

Multiple Pregnancy: Expecting the Unexpected

Discovery Health is revealing the stories behind some unbelievable pregnancies and births during Baby Week, premiering Sunday-Friday, June 14-19 at 8P e/p on Discovery Health. Our own story of four brothers born on the same day, is nothing short of astounding, so Discovery Health along with BlogHer decided to highlight our blog on the Baby Week website. Many of you faithful "Quad Addicts" have been following our story for some time, and many of you are hooked on my Keepin' It Real Rewind Series, in which I'm slowly documenting our infertility and pregnancy journey. However, there's an "inside" story that I've yet to share with you, that I've decided to disclose for this post.

After our battle with infertility, we knew our chances for twins were elevated due to hormone treatments for my Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and a family history of twins, but we had no way to prepare for the shock of quadruplets. In fact, we could hardly wrap our minds around the idea of "triplets" when we learned in the 8th week of pregnancy, that our 3 were in fact FOUR! Each doctor's appointment seemed to up the ante, so much that I feared each appointment would be reveal yet another heartbeat and yet another multiple pregnancy term ending in "-let" (quintuplet, sextuplet, etc).

I was terrified, purely terrified by the thought of quintuplets! You might think after four, what's one or two more, but in my mind it was drastically different. I had 2 arms; Brad had 2 arms. That was one arm for each baby. We could somehow "handle" that. Four car seats would fit in our minivan, four cribs could cram into one nursery, four boy colors (blue, green, yellow, and red) could be used to color code their feeding charts; but throwing another baby in the mix would breakdown my entire game plan.

Each doctor's appointment that passed without any more surprises, calmed my heart into believing that there truly were only four. It wasn't until I was hospitalized at 28 weeks into the pregnancy, that the numbers fear became once again unnerving. Similar to the deliveries featured on Twins by Surprise, our hospital had a surprise multiple birth of its own, several years prior to our delivery. However, many of the nurses who were present at that particular delivery, in which an expected quintuplet birth became a sextuplet birth, were assigned to my care. Repeatedly I heard about this mother's caesarian delivery, and the shock of the doctors finding another sac, just as they were starting to sew up her incision. Usually the story would end with a, "Can you imagine?" "What if you really have 5 instead of 4?" "Wouldn't that be something?"

My daily ultrasounds were less than reassuring, as body parts were crammed and tangled inside my stretched to the max belly. It was nearly impossible for our ultrasound tech to distinguish who was who, and even though I trusted her with my life, I couldn't help but question if somehow one could be hiding somewhere.

After 32 LONG weeks my body was rejecting the pregnancy. High protein levels, hyper-reflex problems, and severe swelling signaled a dangerous condition known as preeclampsia had taken over. The highly anticipated birth day had finally arrived! As they prepped me for surgery, I felt a peace and calmness that I know HAD to be from God. Although I knew there was MUCH uncertainty in the hours and days ahead, I was eager to leave the extreme high risk pregnancy days behind, and meet these little ones who's lives I had been fighting for so long.

Immediately following the intense pulling, ripping, and yanking of my body, I heard the words, "The first one is out!" With each little life taken out of me, I could breath easier than I had for months. Minutes later, (which flew like seconds) four tiny, yet perfect little bodies entered the world. It was over...or was it? I had just taken a huge breath of relief when my doctor in his dry wit yells, "Here's another one!" "Here's another one!" My heart stopped right there on the operating table. I'm sure alarms must have sounded to alert the anasethiologist that he had indeed lost me, but it couldn't be heard over the roar of laughter that filled the room. I was officially the mother of quadruplets!

The final "quint scare" took place in the resuscitation room, where the boys were cared for immediately following delivery. In the emotion and excitement of the moment, Brad lost count and thought there were five babies. Here's the video proof:

I am sure God would have shown Himself faithful if He would have given us another blessing in the bunch, but we were overwhelmingly satisfied with just four. Our hands are full with multiple miracles!

Our little preemie boys have morphed into little boys over the last 28 months. Our hope is that they continue to be "groupies" for life!

However, the "odds" are not currently in our favor at the Murray Casa. 2/4 boys are sick with a nasty tummy bug. I'll spare you the details, but let's just say the Easter buckets are NEVER going to be used for collecting Easter eggs again! Would you join us in praying that this illness would be short and that the other 2 and their parents would be spared from this one? We have an EXCITING end of the week planned (that I can't wait to share), and we'd LOVE to be healthy enough to take it all in! It sounds like a selfish prayer to pray, but I've been learning a lot about prayer and praying for one another. I used to feel guilty to ask for prayer for myself, but it is a great way we can love one another. God longs to communicate with us, and know our hearts desires. So I'm not going to be ashamed to ask you to pray for us, as you so faithfully have through our journey!

Philippians 4:6-7 "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Hebrews 4:16 "Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need."

A "Sprinkle" in Time

This week we tried out the boys' new sprinkler. (By the way, thanks Aunt Kristy and Uncle Ryan for the fabulous bday gift!) It was certainly a hit once they warmed up to the idea of getting sprayed. Isaac was the most reserved, but once he was good and wet, he was all into it! Give them cups to fill and they are set!

Toddler Translation: "wahwah" = Water You'll actually hear Henry say "wader" in the last clip, but they usually default to "wahwah".

Before you know it I'll have 4 sprinklers inside the house, if you know what I mean. I'm not quite up to that task just yet! =)

Summer Quadysseys: The Airport

Summer is HERE! Let the adventures begin! Several of you came up with using "Odyssey" (our van model) in our title, since it means adventure. Combine it with "Quads" and you get "Quadyssey". Spell Check, please add it to your dictionary. Brad and I are sooooo excited to share some of our summer excursions with you, that we even whipped up the little logo! How about that?

Our first Summer Quadyssey was to the Indianapolis Airport. Now before you scroll down the page looking for Disney World pictures...we didn't board any planes, just WATCHED them! The boys LOVE airplanes (or any transportation for that matter), so we thought they would enjoy a closer encounter and all the excitement that goes with a busy airport. The Indianapolis International Airport recently opened an entirely new facility, which is most certainly a "first class" structure, with dining, shopping, original art, and spacious terminals to explore. Spacious is our friend! The boys became great entertainment for the passengers waiting for their flights. In fact, pictures of them are making their way across the US on about 20 different camera phones! It's a true blessing to see our boys bringing joy to others.

Keepin' It Real Rewinds 12

First Trimester:

Although it's a bit of a blur now, the uncertain days of the first trimester seemed to last a lifetime. Every week, we returned to my RE (Reproductive Endocrinologist) to complete blood work and count heartbeats while we held our breaths. Although we knew that one or more of the embryos disappearing or absorbing would be a more favorable outlook for the rest of the babies; We breathed a sigh of relief each time the fourth heartbeat was accounted for, knowing that God had chosen to sustain life yet another week.

Ultimately I chose to trust God's sovereignty in each of those growing little bodies, but I struggled every single day with our circumstances. I attempted to prepare myself for the worst case scenario, yet I wanted to believe that God could save all of them. He was the God of miracles, right? He would work all things according to His purpose. He promised to do so, but I wrestled with trusting Him completely.

Because of the increased risk due to the mono-mono complication and the fragility of a high order multiple pregnancy, we kept a very short-list of people who knew about our quadruplet pregnancy during the first trimester. It was SUCH an involved, complex, emotionally-loaded, time consuming, conversation. (In fact, I'm STILL explaining Monoamniotic Monochorionic Twins, over two years later!) The idea of triplets was daunting enough without throwing in another number and complication that we ourselves didn't understand completely. Looking back, would I let more people be "in the know"? Perhaps. I think it was our coping strategy to deal with the exponential unknowns.

Physically, I was handling the demands of a multiple pregnancy incredibly well. Although I dealt with serious fatigue and fell asleep to the music of Final Jeopardy most evenings, I was able to keep ~~meals~~ snacks down with ease.I even went the whole trimester without purchasing a single maternity clothing item. (Thanks to the rubber band trick I learned from Natalie!) Working my speech therapy job at the school was tiring, but I enjoyed the distraction of the kids, and the support of my colleagues.

Towards the end of the first trimester, I was referred to our perinatologist, Dr. Sumners, who would take over my care exclusively. If I remember correctly our initial appointment went well over 3 hours. (Our doctor was in an emergency c-section for a woman having her 14th baby. Apparently there's no stopping the fourteenth!) However, our prolonged wait was no accident. A photographer was in the office doing a shoot for an upcoming brochure, featuring 10 month old QUADRUPLETS on the cover! While we waited, we were able to observe them interacting, and ~~interrogate~~ ask their mom a million questions about her own experience. We could hardly believe our eyes! We barely knew quadruplets existed before now, and here they were right before our very eyes smiling, climbing, giggling, ALIVE and HEALTHY! So incredibly healthy!

Meeting Denise and her babies became our "living proof" that with God all things are possible and filled us with a new hope...

Oh sweet Henry, you're sooooo lovable with those crystal blue eyes and a smile that's just plain irresistible.

You wear the title of firstborn well, my little man. You must be right in the middle of the action at all times, and you can outdo Curious George's curiosity any day of the week. I love how you are my adventurer, and biggest cuddle bug at the same time.

(Henry's sporting a war scar on his forehead in these pictures after losing a fight with the door frame. It's long gone now, but I'm sure will be replaced with another shortly.)
