Free online ink consumption tool launched

Digital Print Republic, an international online resource and community for digital printing industry, has launched a new free online tool for calculating the ink coverage breakdowns from print-ready PDFs.

The new tool is called Inkchex and is currently available as beta version for registered users. The registration is free.

Inkchex analyses the CMYK and spot colour coverage within a print-ready PDF, and reports the % per separation, per page or per document. The online tool also provides a visual representation of indvidual colour separations and its coverage across the pages. The reports can be saved for any future references.

Inkchex will enable the Printers to estimate and manage their production printing costs by providing additional information from analysis of print-ready PDFs. Inkchex is expected to prove popular with businesses using Toner and Inkjet based printers.

ReaddleDocs released for iPad

Readdle, a developer of iPod and iPhone applications, announced the release of an updated version of ReaddleDocs, its application for reading and managing PDFs on mobile devices. The new version 1.5.1 of ReaddleDocs has been updated for use on iPad and supports PDF annotations.

ReaddleDocs for iPad 1.5.1 allows users to highlight text in different colors within PDF documents, mark notes within the PDF documents and save these changes to the documents. The annotations made within the PDF documents are saved in accordance with the PDF specifications and are compatible with desktop-based PDF Readers.

Symantec warns of new phishing attack guised as PDF download

Symantec Hosted Services has warned about new malicious email attacks that use fake PDF Reader updates and “free gifts” to entice users to provide their credit card details.

These email attacks were identified by MessageLabs Intelligence and these malicious emails are intended to mislead users to give-away their credit card details in return for a free gift.

The email offers the new version of a PDF Reader and provides number of attractive concessions to download the new PDF Reader. On clicking this link in email, the user is presented a professional-looking web page with details of the new PDF Reader and mislead user to provide personal and credit card details. Instead of receiving the PDF Reader, the website informs the user that their IP address or the credit card is blacklisted.

Symantec has advised to be highly suspicious and cautious of any such emails received from unknown sources.

Symantec Hosted Services posted this warning message on its blog on behalf of its Malware Data Analyst and AV Operations Engineer. A quick method to integrate PDF-capable apps with iPhones, iPads and iPods

For those using a Mac – you’re in luck, an anonymous blogger on www.MacOSXHints.com has shared a very quick method to enable easy integration between PDF-capable apps on iPhone, iPod and iPad devices.

The idea is to add any PDF-capable app to the PDF Services menu which then allows users to transfer the print preview of a document to another app as a PDF document.

The blogger shared this idea in context of integration between iTunes, a digital media player application and iBook 1.1, an app for viewing PDF files. The integration allows users to add PDF documents or web pages to iTunes from the iBook PDF viewer.

The method is simple to create an alias of iTunes (e.g. alias named as ‘Save PDF to iTunes) and include it in ~/Library/PDF Services on the Mac. Once this is done, next time a user is viewing a PDF document or a web page on their iBook and would like to add this document to iTunes for later reading — the user simply clicks ‘Print’ and selects ‘Save PDF to iTunes’. This launches iTunes and saves the PDF document.
