We received this email from a player a few months ago. It's great guidance that some may find useful. It could only make you a better player and team. Thanks to Rob!

Captain:
1- Be team representative to the league
a) be accessible to league management and other captains
b) have a strong knowledge of the APA rulebook
c) work toward conflict resolution in scheduling matters and questions during play
d) promote fair play and tolerance from your team
e) make certain to have a representative at any scheduled team meetings
f) be prompt in sending in score sheets and satisfying any financial obligations

2- Represent all players on your team
a) dispense playing time as fairly as the competitive nature of league play will allow
b) be aware of,and willing to be flexible with regards to, scheduling or travel conflicts that may
arise with individual players
c) be sure your team knows the schedule and location of play
d) make sure your team has enough players on time to begin play
e) communicate all pertinent information to all players on your team in a timely manner
f) be sure all members are aware of any financial obligations associated with playing

Players:
1- Respect the game
a) have a functioning knowledge the APA rules
b) be competitive (play to win at all times)
c) respect your opponent, remember, not everyone can make every shot and do not "shark" or
harass your opponent
d) do not argue with your opponent (let the captains talk it out or call a division rep)
e) win or lose have fun-it is still only a game

2- Respect the team
a) remember there are as many as 7 other people on the roster
b) make every effort to make every scheduled match on time
c) let your captain know of any scheduling or travel conflicts as well in advance as is possible
d) pay attention to all matches (its a great way to learn and the more eyes watching the less
conflict will arise)
e) encourage your teammates in a positive manner (don't cheer them on by putting down their
opponent)
f) remember-you will not play or play first every week (but its a long season)
g) PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE !!!

Singles Guy, Off to Las Vegas

Angelo Petkovits, (Beer Nuts and Squishies teams) played in North East Singles Regional last weekend in the 5's board. He lost and got knocked to the loser's bracket in the second round (because he whacked the balls too hard-according to whom? Does this make him a ball buster?), then came back to win on the loser's side and jump back over to the semi-finals on Sunday morning. Continuing his "when in doubt, whack'em out" strategy, he was able to make it into the finals where he faced off with off Islander Konstantin Sidoyov. On a hill/hill match, he finished off with his lucky pocket marker (cop eating a box of donuts, compliments Rob Mendoza-see pic) and a cut shot to the corner.

Now he's off to Vegas, Deana believes her pregnancy was his plan all along so he could go without her.

Congratulations Angelo!

Al Guerra's Trip For Katrina Victims

At the Fall Tri-Cup, many of you participated in the 8-ball and 9-Ball singles boards. As some of you may know already, for every board run, $20 was donated to Al Guerra (Armed & Dangerous 8/9 ball-Raxx Division) and his efforts at helping Hurricane Katrina Victims. In January, Al had contacted us about doing some fund raising for his trip. In an email he sent, he wrote that he was responsible for the plane fare which came to about $400.00 and further explained that he did not have the extra money but I still had the conviction in his heart to go down there and help. Just before he left, he sent us this note:

I would like you all to know that a part of you will be going down there with me.
When I get some down time in the evenings or early mornings, I will be thanking God for all of you and for the financial support you've given me. It means a lot.

To me, the size of your gift doesn't matter as much as what is in your heart.
I really appreciate your love and support.

You will be pleased to know that I've raised almost $300.00 towards my plane fare which includes your gift to me.

Thank you again.

When AL got back (this week), he sent this to us:

New Orleans was quite an experience.

Thanks so much for helping support my efforts.

We had a crew of 13 from my church and there was another crew last week from a Hicksville church.
It was good to see other New Yorkers helping the cause.

We did a lot of gutting and mold spraying all week. Cajun food was good and also saw an Alligator.

I got to meet some of the home-owners and it was heart-wrenching.
I met this guy whose son had slashed his wrists in the house that we worked on.
He didn't die in the house but eventually killed himself in the hospital.
The owner was a school teacher. He taught 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades for 18 years.
When Katrina hit, it took his home and the school.
He and his wife were so happy to see us.
I got to pray with him and he was just a wonderful man who has hit the worst of times.
One dead son, no job, and no home. They are renting now and his wife works for the court system.
Through some donated church money we were also able to give him $800.00 to help him out just a little bit.
Well that's just one of the stories.

Contractors are ripping people off down there left and right.

Please know that your money was a big help to me and I appreciate it.

Fall Tri-Cup 2007

And the winners are...
1st Place $2000 winners for 8-Ball are Mark It Up, out of South Levittown Lanes, Sunday Nights. Congratulations! The battle was long, the Psicoticks put up a strong fight, but in the end, someone had to win and Mark It Up prevailed. Psicoticks took home $500. Other money winners include Odd Balls-Parkside and Good Karma-Fuzzy's (both $250). The following teams are also qualified for The LI Cup in June: With My Balls (Tuesday Combo), New Team (Raxx Combo), Armed & Dangerous (Raxx Combo) and Bad Karma (Bellmore Pool House).

In 9-Ball, Balled Eagles (Raxx Combo) took the top prize-$1250 in a battle with Bring It (Gathering Lounge on Thursday nights). Also qualified for LI Cup in 9-Ball are Armed & Dangerous (Raxx Combo) and CM FR BHND (Alumni Club).

The big raffle winner was Charlie Lupo who took home a Helmstetter cue and case combo-Congrats Charlie!

If You Were a Score Sheet, Part 1

We've received some interesting score sheets in the last 13 years. We're received burned ones-though not anymore now that you can't smoke in bars, ones with drinks spilled on them, ones with dinner on them, ones with doodles, sheets with all the "O's", "e's", "6's", etc. colored in, ones whose envelope was completely doodled all over with the exception of the address area, ones with complaints made during a drunken rampage and one whose weekly fees were paid with winning lottery tickets-we only accept checks, cash and money orders now. But one that stands out in my mind most is the one received with wacky tobacky inside. For future reference, please pay for your weekly fees in cash or check.

Who has the best handwriting in the league? Probably Ambrose Brown. If he's on your team, please let him keep score. He writes so neatly and he's also a good shot. So kudos to Ambrose.

Chris O'Connor also has neat handwriting. Although, he has not been keeping score lately. Evelyn Bellear has bubble writing (no surprise there), Brooke Adams-most bubbly writing I've ever seen. Marianne Kiernan has nice handwriting and knows how to keep score, but can usually convince someone else (not Kevin) to keep score (bats those big blue eyes). Toast is probably the only one who can read on his team, The Nuggets. So, he keeps score (he's a local politician now). Patti Ford, Felt Up, best all-around score sheets-she usually keeps score-well, neat handwriting, not too bubbly writing, money is always perfect, postmarked the next day, keeps defense shots. What more could I ask for? Mario Cinturati always writes with a fine tipped red pen. Now the Alumni teams, please be aware that should your team make it to Vegas, your sheets will be closely reviewed by The National Office. I'm sorry Rui, they have probably already formed their opinion of you. Rui gets blasted every week on his sheets, should he ever get incarcerated, the poor boy... Gil Muirhead, he's a stickler for making sure all the "i's" get dotted and "t's" get crossed. He wants to make sure he gets it right (I don't see him as the score keeping type though-probably has a babe or two keeping score).

Most of the time when females keep score, it's because their boyfriends/husbands won't. Now, the girlfriends, most of the time they have legible handwriting. I like that. But, if they don't play in the league, they have no clue how to keep score, never mind knowing when to mark a defensive shot. So the girlfriends/wives (non-players) keep score and the boyfriends/husbands call the office to complain about handicaps. I love that, mental handicapping, very reliable, just like the girlfriend/wife/nonplayer score keeper. Now, I should say this is not always the case. But I can recall clearly two females calling about handicaps (the men call much more frequently) -and they played in the league and their boyfriends/husbands don't know how to keep score. Oh, and you must use a handicap review form for us to hear your complaint-handicaps are not discussed over the phone.

The Armed & Dangerous team out of Raxx, they should call themselves the revolving captain team. Every session, new captain. It's nice. Most communication from the office goes through the captain. So, I've had conversations with the different captains every session.

Sometimes, I rarely speak with a captain and my imaginary conversations with whom I deem the captain are quite entertaining. Take the team Sweet Leaf team for instance. The captain is Mark Pizzo. Mark's wife, Carole, is who I recognize as the captain. She is not listed on the roster though. She handles the paperwork, fills out and signs the check, mails the envelope, always post marked the next day. If the paperwork does not make it to the office, she did not handle it. She must have been on vacation, I wonder where she went? I mentally thank her every week for such efficiency.

What you should know now before you play in the LI Cup in June

Your spring roster is the roster that goes to the LI Cup in June.

All players must have 10 scores in the last 2 years to play in the LI Cup. Playoffs and Tri-cup scores count towards the 10 match minimum.

To play in the LI Cup, you must have played 4 times in the Spring Session with a qualified team. See bylaws on becoming a qualified team.

Do not wait until the end of the session to get your required matches in-teams forfeit, teams drop out, etc. Play your new players now and play the players who can only play a few times now.

Those Pesky Things In My Envelope

How do I get you to look at the stuff in the envelope? If I really need you to see it (you owe money), I staple it to the sheet, a few times-just to be (more) annoying. If something is folded within your sheet, I need you to see it, but you probably don't owe any money. If there is red ink on your sheet, you need to read it (you probably owe money and/or score sheets). If I hand write something on your sheet-it's usually just a reminder and I know that you'll follow up with whatever I ask. If you have nothing hand written, stamped or highlighted, you're Golden, your team rocks! I need to get smiley stamps. That's my next goal, smiley faces on score sheets to teams that fill out their sheets correctly, remit fees on time, write in the defensive shots, total their innings, write correct player numbers, etc.

Schedules-we give these out usually the 1st week of every session, and also when there are schedule changes. Inevitably, every Wednesday, a certain player calls to see where he is playing. Ed and I both look at caller ID while ignoring the incessant ring of the telephone, the phone continues to ring, all day. By 3 pm, the player is sweating, by 4 pm-convulsing, and the phone is still ringing. We usually pick up his 10th call-about 5-6 pm to let him know where he is playing. He gets schedules, usually a few every session. It's just easier to call the office than to read the bottom of the score sheet or a schedule.

Team Contact Information Form, when we do get these back, they're usually not filled out. I know you don't want to hear from me, but I rarely call and if I do, it's usually something important-i.e. the other team needs to reschedule, you have a bye, you owe money, we owe you money, happy birthday (really, we call you to wish you a happy birthday), etc. So please, have everyone look over those forms and make any corrections or additions, especially email addresses.

So to those captains/players who share the info, I thank you! Please post here so I can properly recognize you.

Higher Level Tournament Qualifying Criteria

In order for a player to advance to any level of the National Team
Championships (including the Local Team Championship) he/she
must meet certain criteria. This Higher Level Tournament criteria is
listed below.
► Must have a skill level based on at least 10 actual League
match scores in the format in which the player is advancing.
These scores include normal weekly play, playoffs and Tri-
Cup scores.
► Must advance with the highest session-ending handicap
he/she had from the time his/her team becomes qualified to
his/her Spring Session ending handicap. (Highest session
ending must also be based on 10 actual League match scores
in the format in which the player is advancing.)
► Must have played at least four times with the qualified team
in the Spring Session.
► Must maintain current APA membership status.
► Must be on a team that has at least four original members
from the session qualified.
► Must have either joined an already qualified team or a
member of a team that won a division title to gain entry into
HLT.

Weekly Fees at The Gathering Lounge

If your host location is The Gathering Lounge, you must now send in your half of the weekly fees ($17.50) directly to the office. Please make payable to Ed Stein. Failure to do so will result in lost points that will not be awarded back.

For those of you thinking of excuses already, here's a list of unacceptable ones:

Membership Renewals

You'll notice that all players are showing $20.00 (unless they joined after August 15-then those players will show $10.00) next to their name on your score sheets. All players must renew their membership the first week of play in the Spring Session. Also in your 1st weeks envelope will be a team renewal form-please check addresses, emails, phone numbers, etc. so that we have to most up-to-date info and so that all players will receive their membership cards, magazines and the like.

If there is ever a problem with play such as canceling for weather related issues or the opposing team needs to reschedule, we need to be able to contact someone in addition to the captain and co-captain.

Where are the Score Sheets?

So, you play pool, fill out your score sheet when you remember, mail it in, hopefully within a couple of days of playing and then it's on to the next week. And the whole process starts again. You'll pick up your sheets again, all pristine, clean, perfect and not a drop of alcohol on them until 7:35 pm, unless your team is late. What happens to the score sheets after you play? Here's a compilation as of late:

Sheets get lost in the mail (this tends to happen to the same people over and over again-I'm convinced it's a mailbox conspiracy). There's a certain mailbox in Brooklyn that Barry will not use as his sheets were lost there twice.

My wife forgot to mail it. You know, you say this to me. I am a wife. Do not insult the wives of this world. We, the wives, do not forget anything. You know this to be true-we remind you in every fight, by bringing up the past, we do not forget anything, Oh, and, we were right then. too.

I gave the sheets to _____. The policy still remains the same, your score sheet must be post marked the day after play. At some places of employment, you can change the date of post mark. We will never know. Even when it shows up 2 weeks later. We have no inkling, you can get one over on us every week, with no penalty. Or, so you think.
