Call For Help: Problem Booting a Windows XP Computer

Q: I have a computer with XP Home. I don"t know exactly what happened but I shut it down and when I tried to reboot it just keeps rebooting. It won't go to safe mode, won't recognize a floppy disk. What can I do to get it to at least go to recovery to reformat it?

A: Try to boot from the factory cd or WinXP cdrom. Make sure bios is set to boot from cd drive. Do a system repair install (not the 1st option for recovery console).

• If all else fails, check the hardware. A healthy system should still be able to boot from floppy or cdrom, regardless of any issues with the hard disk.

Call For Help: File access problem on external hard drive.

My co-worker has asked me for some advice. He just removed the hard drive from his old PC, and installed it in an external hard drive enclosure. He is able to access all files in his daughter's user folders, but not his own files & folders. He gets an access denied message. He's even tried via DOS prompt, but is still getting an access denied message. He said he only had a password for his log-on account on the old computer. I believe he ran that account as an administrator. His daughter's account had a password, but he was able to access her files, not his. The hard drive from the old PC had Windows XP Home, the new PC has XP Pro.

Solution, by LLTTV member Tomas: Boot with a Linux LiveCD, Puppy, e.g., and then try accessing the files or see this article: Gain control of those “Access Denied” folders to gain access with Windows XP. (defectivekit.com)
