We have the talented Phil Clark of Motography as our Art Feature this week.  Phil’s work instantly caught our attention, we love his unique edge and artistic approach to the automobile.  Capturing cars in motion, in different lighting, accenting their own characteristics gives each image a personality of its’ own.  Turning a passion into an art form and letting his creativity run wild for our viewing pleasure!

BIO:  I grew up from an early age appreciating cars. Be it through watching motorsport, car books, magazines or toy models – I just loved the things. I grew up, but still the little boy (grown tall) gravitated towards all things ‘automobile’ – the passion has always been there.

Growing up in Old Blighty it was natural to love small European lightweight sports cars and often to scoff at the large American land barges they called ‘automobiles’. After emigrating to New Zealand I happened across an event called Beach Hop – which is just EPIC. Basically a couple of thousand classic muscle cars, hot rods and street machines take over a small coastal town (called Whangamata -pron ‘fonga-mat-arr’) for 5 days late summer for a huge festival. I was hooked.

All the while I had been self-developing my photographic skills over the years. Film was okay, but with the advent of digital I found that a whole new level of creativity could be reached. This was the point at which ‘motography’ was born.

Growing up with the old adage ‘I don’t take snaps….I paint with light’ has meant that I constantly seek to portray cars in a different light. I constantly challenge myself to capture cars in differing lights and in motion.

There are great ‘static’ photographers and there are also great ‘sports action’ photographers – but hardly anyone who captures motion in an artistic manner. Cars are generally more interesting and contextual when in motion – that’s what they were made to do – not just sit there in a parking lot looking pretty.

So motography for me is really capturing something different in an artistic manner – if that makes sense I offer commissions, photo shoots and have artwork for sale.

BIO:  I love all things Pin-Up! FAMILY & FRIENDS!! Anything Vintage, Retro, Rockabilly, Classic, whatever you want to call it.. if it’s aged, I’m all about it!! My mother owned an antique store when I was a little girl, I believe that’s where my infatuation with all of this began. I also love beards, movies, quoting movies, reading, music music music!! Going to shows. SUPPORTING YOUR LOCAL MUSIC SCENE!!

I’m extremely passionate about hair and food… Just not hair in my food I’ve been a hair stylist 10 years strong! Another thing I love is tattoo’s, and getting them. What is Billetproof?

Billetproof is about HOT RODS and CUSTOMS and is for those who appreciate the skill, ingenuity and creativity that went into building them during the early days of the hobby. A time when hot rods and customs were about what you could do in your garage rather than with your checkbook. A time when hotrodding was a little dirtier, less polished and still experimental. While there is nothing wrong with the high-dollar billet clad side of the hobby, we just find it more fulfilling to do it ourselves and to drive our creations rather than trailer around a piece of fine art. It’s not about having the best looking car, nor the ugliest. Billetproof is about DOING IT YOURSELF! Billetproof is NOT a revival of the fifties or rockabilly. It strives to be a unique event and state of mind. The show’s loyalists ages range from 16 to 80, with personal styles all across the spectrum. But they do all have one thing in common—a love for building and driving traditionally inspired hot rods and customs.

In 1997 the show’s founders, Kirk Jones and Jay Ward, had had enough of being looked down upon at all the car events they attended because their cars were considered unfinished. Their cars were never going to be “finished”. Primer and rust were just fine. All those $100,000 cars weren’t inspiring at all. In fact they were down right boring. It was time to do something. So they started their own show. It was obvious that there was a need to showcase the growing movement of rodders who were inspired by the era when hot rods were all business, dangerous, sharp and explosive. In short, FUN. The first show was in the parking lot of Albany Bowl in Albany, CA and was attended by 26 cars. While that seems small now, it was more than expected. Everyone there had a blast checking out the cars of the like-minded, winning the hand made trophies, and realizing that they weren’t alone in their passion for this brand of car building.

From that first effort the show and movement have grown like mad. Over the last six years the number of participants accelerated from 26 to 83 to 165, and soared to 779 cars and over 3000 people in 2004. The show managed to attract attendees from 12 states and as far away as Canada, England and Japan, all the while outgrowing every venue the show occupied. Bowling alleys, city parks and even a dusty rodeo grounds proved too small. 2004 was the shows second successful year at the Antioch Fairgrounds in Antioch, California, it’s biggest and best venue yet, with more cars, activities, vendors and trophies than ever. The goal now is to embrace the fact that the show has become successful and allow it to continue to grow while keeping it’s traditional roots and personality firmly in place. “Big and still cool” is the new credo. So don’t miss this year’s show!

Buddy Holly was one of the greatest pioneers of Rock ‘n’ Roll, at the young age of 22 he left behind a legacy that rock bands have strive to achieve for decades.  His talent in all aspects of the music industry and his experimental recording hours lead to a number of timeless hits that we are still enjoying today!

Singer. Born Charles Hardin Holley on September 7, 1936, in Lubbock, Texas. As the fourth and youngest child in his family, Holly was nicknamed “Buddy” by his mother, who felt that his given name was too big for her little boy. “Holly,” the altered form of his last name, would later result from a misspelling in his first recording contract.

Buddy Holly learned to play piano and fiddle at an early age, while his older brothers taught him the basics of guitar. A 1949 home recording of “My Two-Timin’ Woman” showcases Holly’s skilled, if prepubescent, singing voice. Holly’s mother and father, a tailor by trade, both proved to be very supportive of their son’s burgeoning musical talents, generating song ideas and even penning a letter to the editor of Lubbock’s newspaper in defense of rock ‘n’ roll-loving teenagers lambasted in a conservative editorial. Despite his parents’ support, Holly couldn’t have become a founding father of rock ‘n’ roll without engaging in some degree of rebellion. Once a preacher at the local Tabernacle Baptist Church asked him, “What would you do if you had $10?” The young rocker reportedly muttered, “If I had $10, I wouldn’t be here.” Holly had clearly set his sights on something other than growing up to join his brothers in their tiling business.

After high school, Holly formed a band and played country and western songs regularly on a Lubbock radio station. He frequently opened for more prominent national acts that toured through town. Bandmate Sonny Curtis viewed Holly’s opening for Elvis Presley in 1955 as a crucial turning point for the singer. “When Elvis came along,” Curtis recalls, “Buddy fell in love with Elvis and we began to change. The next day we became Elvis clones.” Although the bespectacled, bow-tied youth lacked Elvis’s incendiary sex appeal, Holly’s conversion from country to rock ‘n’ roll did not go unnoticed. A record company talent scout soon caught his act at a skating rink and signed him to a contract.

In early 1956, Holly and his band began recording demos and singles in Nashville under the name Buddy Holly and the Three Tunes, but the group’s lineup was later revised and dubbed The Crickets. Holly wrote and recorded his breakthrough hit, “That’ll Be the Day,” with The Crickets in 1957. The song’s title and refrain are a reference to a line uttered by John Wayne in the 1956 film The Searchers. Between August 1957 and August 1958, Holly and the Crickets charted seven different Top 40 singles. Coincidentally, “That’ll Be the Day” topped the U.S. chart exactly 500 days before Holly’s untimely death.

In October 1958, Holly split from The Crickets and moved to Greenwich Village in New York City. Due to legal and financial problems resulting from the band’s breakup, Holly reluctantly agreed to tour through the Midwest in 1959 with The Winter Dance Party. Tired of enduring broken-down buses in subfreezing conditions, Holly chartered a private plane to take him from a show in Clear Lake, Iowa, to the tour’s next stop in Moorhead, Minnesota. Holly was joined on the doomed flight by fellow performers Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. The plane crashed within minutes of leaving the ground, killing all aboard. Buddy Holly was just 22 years old. His funeral was held at the Tabernacle Baptist Church back in Lubbock.

BIO:  I currently reside in Northern Arizona, but I left my heart in Austin, Texas.  I am a mother of 2, student, philanthropist, entrepreneur, Motley Crue fanatic, and lover of all things vintage.  I am making my mark in this world one photograph at a time – integrating classic pinup girl confidence with new age style.   I am on a mission to get to the top.  I am currently working towards my Bachelors Degree in Marketing, in hopes of working in the entertainment and/or fashion industry.

Starting at a young age, I loved playing dress up in my grandmothers closet, and I even got into her clip-on earring collection.. OUCH! I’ve always gravitated towards the glamour and ‘Stepford’-esque lifestyle that the women of the mid-century portrayed, it all seemed so fascinating! I’m always told that I was born in the wrong decade, and I completely agree! I love when people come up to me and say, “Oh my, my mother used to dress just like you!”.  I believe that dressing up shouldn’t have to be reserved for special occasions, I believe when I am dressed for the best, I am prepared for anything. I recently was given my mothers Pink “White” Zig Zag sewing machine from the 50′s, I am planning on making tons of reproduction goodies for your visual stimulation!

I grew up in a town right on Route 66, I’ve seen numerous car shows go through town.

Embarrassing moment: I was caught fanning myself while the car club of Flagstaff drove through the 4th of July parade. What can I say, engine revs really get me going!  I enjoy going to car shows, rockabilly events, museums, art galleries, entering pinup contest, watching classic movies, thrift shopping, reading, cooking, and sewing, and raising my two children, they are the most important little sweethearts in my life!

I attended the Barbizon Modeling School for a short period of time in high school and then did a few photoshoots in 2008.  I have only seriously been pursuing my modeling career since 2010.  Since then, especially in the last few months, things have been going so well! I got my first publication with Larry Lindahl on the back of his new book ‘Arizona, Kicks on Route 66′ written by Roger Naylor. Things are just taking off, expect some new publications coming out this fall. It’s my dream to one day be a cover girl, and keep the spirit of the 50′s alive! For next event on the list, I am volunteering with the Lions Club for the Annual Demolition Derby in Flagstaff, Arizona! The proceeds will go to a fund that provides medical and eye care for underprivileged children.  Come see the new Trophy Girl and see some wreckin’!

Today we celebrate one of the automotive industries greatest contributors, Henry Ford.  Along with several master minds of their time, Ford was part of an inspiring, innovative group of peers that lead the way in revolutionizing the  American Industry.

EARLY LIFE:  Automobile manufacturer Henry Ford was born on July 30, 1863, on his family’s farm near Dearborn, Michigan. When Henry was 15, his father gifted him a pocket watch, which the young boy promptly took apart and reassembled. Friends and neighbors were impressed and requested that he fix their timepieces too.

Unsatistfied with farm work, Ford left home the next year, at age 16, to take an apprenticeship as a machinist in Detroit. In the years that followed, he would learn to skillfully operate and service steam engines, and would also study bookkeeping.

EARLY CAREER:  In 1888, Ford married Clara Ala Bryant and briefly returned to farming to support his wife and son, Edsel. But three years later, he was hired as an engineer for the Edison Illuminating Company. In 1983, his natural talents earned him a promotion to Chief Engineer.

All the while, Ford developed his plans for a horseless carriage, and in 1896, he constructed his first model, the Ford Quadricycle. Within the same year, he attended a meeting with Edison executives and found himself presenting his automobile plans to Thomas Edison. The lighting genius encouraged Ford to build a second and better model.

FORD MOTOR COMPANY:  After a few trials building cars and companies, in 1903, Henry Ford established the Ford Motor Company. Ford introduced the Model T in October of 1908, and for several years, the company posted 100 percent gains.

However, more than for his profits, Ford became renowned for his revolutionary vision: the manufacture of an inexpensive automobile made by skilled workers who earn steady wages.

In 1914, he sponsored the development of the moving assembly line technique of mass production. Simultaneously, he introduced the $5-per-day wage ($110 in 2011) as a method of keeping the best workers loyal to his company. Simple to drive and cheap to repair, half of all cars in America in 1918 were Model T’s.

Henry Ford died of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 7, 1947, at the age of 83, near his Dearborn estate, Fair Lane.
