One of the most common questions I am asked here, on other forums and on consultation calls is "should I go with a network or get my own affiliate tracking software" So here is a post that lists some pros of network vs. in-house affiliate tracking solutions.

PROS of Affiliate Networks
(I'm talking retail product networks like CJ, not CPA networks or info product network like Clickbank)

1) Trust - Affiliates may not know or trust your company, but they hopefully consider the network they are already used to working with, a trusted 3rd party.

2) Payments - a) The network pays the affiliate, which overcomes a big trust issue. b) The fact they issue payments is a time and headache saver for the merchant. c) Affiliates get consolidated commission checks. So even if they only made $20 from your program and 30 from another they'll still get a check. They like that! :p

3) Time Savings, Convenience (FOR AFFILIATES) - Networks are a HUGE advantage for affiliates. Instead of logging into muliple merchant sites each with different logins, different software, different reports - they can login to one network - pull links, banners, run reports - all from one interface they are already familiar with, for ALL the different merchant they are partnered with.

4) Time Savings, Convenience (FOR MERCHANTS) - Set up is much easier with networks. Commissions are handled for you. Some support issues could possibly be diminished.

5) RECRUITING - the biggie in my mind. I think it was Brian Tracy that said, "find out what your customers want and GIVE it to them". Well I say the same goes for affiliates. "Find out what affiliates want and GIVE it to them!"

Lots of affiliates are on networks because they want to trust they'll get paid and want the convenience of a network. So it's MUCH easier to do recruiting on a network. (I do affiliate recruiting for a living, so I know.) :p

Thousands of affiliates are already there. You don't have to go out and find them all, many will find you. You still need to do proactive recruiting, but affiliates are much more likely to join if you are on a network.

Plus most of the top networks have options for you to do affiliate recruiting and/or promotion within the network for an additional fee.

PROS of Indy's (In-house programs)

1) Transparency and Control - The primary reason some merchants want an in-house program with their own software is to have more transparency and control. So if that's really important to you then in-house may be an option.

2) Cost - Some in-house programs are fairly inexpensive and there are no ongoing fees like networks charge. (But you get what you pay for. Look at all the benefits you'd be missing above.)

So now you see why I lean toward affiliate networks for most programs in general, although when I do consultations I can take individual merchant needs and requirements into account and sometimes may recommend an in-house solution.

To discover what affiliate network and tracking software I typically recommend and why, click here.

Anyone else have anything else to add? I'm sure I forgot something.

Hello everybody I have been researching affiliate marketing for sometime now. I have learned a little about it but there is still so many questions. I don't even know where to start. I have looked that the Maverick Money Makers program and am wondering if anybody has been involved with this program. Is this a good place to start being a newbie? I'm not expecting to be super rich overnight by no means, but do feel a person can make a pretty good lucrative income with affiliate marketing if they have the know how. Any help stirring in the right direction would be very appreciated.
How do you guys go about finding blogs to comment on?

Also, when you comment, do you tend to add a link within your comment or do you just add your website. i.e. do you say something like, "I like what you wrote about ..... there is more information on this topic at..."

Thanks!
I have found that CJ tends to have a day or 2 delay for sales to be registered by non-bulk upload merchants.

LinkShare seems to be all over the map.

Craigslist Now Warns About Affiliate Scammers and Tells Users
How to Get Back at Them Where it Hurts - Right In the Wallet!

Affiliate Scammers Give the Industry a Big Black Eye!

I think (hope) most affiliates know that they aren't supposed to do affiliate marketing on Craigslist. Not only is it against Craigs TOS, but many affiliate networks prohibit CL marketing and will withhold your commissions.

Craiglist's enlists the aid of users who report affiliate spamvertising and anyone who has tried posting blatant affiliate links there, knows just how easy it is to get flagged.

But the underbelly of affiliate marketing, has all kinds of scammy ways to try to game the system and trick CL users into pulling out their credit card or filling out a lead form. I won't go into some of the creative marketing these guys do, but they are giving the affiliate marketing industry a huge black eye. Millions of CL users (consumers) are now probably going to link the word 'affiliate' with the word 'scammer'. :-(

So now Craigslist is resorting to extreme measures to curb affiliate scams. They issue a full page warning to users entering certain parts of the site (dating and jobs sections are the two I know of) and tell them how to get back at affiliates. This affiliate foiling tip is on the warning page:

FUN FACT: If you are able to determine a scammer's "affiliate ID" and report it to their affiliate marketing program, this will often result in termination of the scammer, and confiscation of the scammer's ill-gotten gains by the affiliate program.

Here is an example of the affiliate scam warning that comes up before entering job sites. Below is the copy, just in case you read this blog a month from now and that page is no longer working.

SCAM ALERT - affiliate scammers are posting bogus ads promising (nonexistent!) employment, paid research trials, or other compensation, but then notifying repliers that they'll need to jump through a hoop first, directing them to:

* background checking services
* credit checking or reporting sites
* sites where you are instructed to enter your resume or personal information
* sites where you are asked to sign up for a "free" trial offer
* sites offering training or education
* sites offering a "system" for making money
* survey or focus group sites
* sites designed to deliver malware or misuse your identifying information
all in hopes of earning affiliate marketing commissions or otherwise profiting at the expense of persons seeking employment.

Lots of variations on this scam, but each generally involves dangling (nonexistent!) compensation, and then directing you to a website where you are asked to sign up for something, use your credit card, or input personal information such as your email address.

The disclaimer page that comes up before entering the personals section is a little different. It says in part...

SCAM ALERT - scammers posing as potential romantic partners are directing CL users to age and identity verification sites, dating/adult/cam sites (where you can see their "pics" or chat with them), even sites designed to deliver malware --- all in hopes of earning affiliate marketing commissions at your expense.

FUN FACT: Reporting a scammer's "affiliate ID" to their affiliate marketing program often results in confiscation of the scammer's ill-gotten gains by the affiliate program.

Market responsibly folks! Do we really want millions of consumers thinking affiliates are scammers?

I have been telling my wife for the longest that our computer can act as a cash register, we just got to figure out how to make it work. I have been researching different network affiliate programs. Everything I see out there has either bad reviews or it is some kind of scam. I looked seriously into Maverick Money Makers but am still not sold. I would be completely new to the business, I know there has got to be a way to make money online. No I'm not expecting to go out and make 10K a day. I would be satified if I could make a extra $500-$1000 a month. I know that this is possible but don't know really where to start. Does anybody have any suggestions. I would really appreciate any input anybody could give me.
