5 Acts Launches Writers in Residence

5 Acts Productions, the ITV Studios scripted label led by David P. Davis, has launched a brand new Writers in Residence for unrepresented writers entering the industry.

Bristol-based Michael Jenkins and Cardiff-based Tina Pasotra are the first to join Davis. Together they will develop two original ideas over the next two years. The residency has received support and funding through ITV’s Diversity Commissioning Development Fund. In March this year, ITV announced plans to reserve £80m of its content commissioning budget over the next three years to drive change towards racial equity and disability equity.

Edinburgh TV Fest Shines Spotlight on Diversity: “Good Shows Travel and Are Global”

Diversity and how to best ensure it in the British TV industry was a topic of debate on Wednesday, the opening day of the Edinburgh TV Festival.

During a panel entitled “Insert (Diversity) Here,” for which The Hollywood Reporter served as media partner, writer-director and actor Adjani Salmon (Dreaming Whilst Black) signaled there aren’t enough diverse people in positions of power yet. He recalled pitching the BBC without success before starting to work with production firm Big Deal Films, which focuses on inclusive storytelling.

ITV Studios-backed 5 Acts Productions has optioned rights to author Clare Mackintosh’s latest thriller, The Last Party.

The deal marks the first major content move for 5 Acts, which is based in Cardiff and was launched by former Bad Wolf exec David P. Davis last year.

ITV has shifted focus to “aggressively pursuing talent deals”, according to CEO Carolyn McCall, who said the UK outfit is more lukewarm on straight acquisitions and has turned some down “because they were not the right economics.”

Speaking during a two-hour investor conference this afternoon following the release of producer/distributor ITV Studios’ five-year masterplan, McCall and ITV Studios MD Julian Bellamy pointed to recent high-profile talent deals. The likes of It’s A Sin exec Nicola Shindler launched her Quay Street Productions banner with ITV Studios and Industry exec David P. Davis’ fledgling 5 Acts Productions is also backed by the producer/distributor. Shindler was referenced several times during the investor call, which featured contributions from multiple ITV execs.
