Ahhhhh…..Spring is in the air. The sun stays around for happy hour and your air conditioner is called back to active duty. Although Memorial Day weekend is still a week away, it’s time to pull out that dusty barbeque out of the storage shed! I thought it only fitting to show off the new releases from the Abaco, Amygdala and Liftmusic libraries which kick off good party vibes. Soak it in!

What would Summer be without the fun-to-people-watch Hipster kids? They are everywhere in LA – Dodger Stadium, The Hollywood Bowl, Elysian Park and of course the ultimate Hipster Paradise known as The Satellite (aka Spaceland for seasoned LA concert goers). Just look for bearded men and waif-y ladies donning skinny jeans, shades with colorful frames and can of PBR in their hand. I can say this for the breed of Silverlake/Echo Park/Brooklyn residents – they sure do love their Indie Rock. And I too love Indie Rock. Therefore, I ♥ Hipsters. Wait……I think I got that wrong on the SAT too.

“They just don’t make ‘em like they used to!” If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard an elder say that, I wouldn’t need that Social Security check that my generation probably won’t get anyway. Despite the old tired saying, there is some truth in it. There was a time when music had to actually be performed and not programmed. And if you made a mistake on tape, you had to record it again thus leaving no room for amateurs. Those were the days! This week’s new releases from the Cavendish, Poke and Deneb Records music libraries blend the sounds of yesterday with a fresh new twist. Think of it in the same vein as Dre and Snoop jamming with a hologram of Tupac, minus the whole rapping thing. Respect!

The Archive Remixed series is a marriage of old Funk and Soul with the modern synthesizer. Unlike Kim Kardashian’s marriage, this one is built to last! Ah yes, it’s the Monday after the 2012 NAB Convention. Our annual trek to Las Vegas is a combination of meeting up with old friends and making new ones in the whirlwind of the busy convention floor. That slight exhaustion mixed with a fond nostalgia is always a sign of another wonderful NAB experience!

For those of you who have never been in attendance, the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) Convention is an annual event held in Las Vegas devoted to everything associated with making a production come to life. The elaborate booths both informative and interactive are always a sight to see! 2012 marks 5 Alarm Music’s 10th anniversary and we were up to the task of strutting our stuff!

Who says you can’t mix business with pleasure? We here at 5 Alarm have earned the reputation for throwing a pretty amazing party and this year was no different! Our second annual shindig at The Society Cafe in the Wynn Encore Hotel was a smashing success. We now have blackmail party pics on all who attended. I kid, I kid!

We would like to thank everyone who stopped by our booth! Here is our 2011-2012 sizzle reel highlighting some of our hot new music placements.

Delving Into The Din Of Delirium: Quirky New Releases – 4/6/12

Making music is much like creating a painting. Sometimes you’re not in the mood to paint that pretty sunrise or an expansive mountain vista. Sometimes you just wanna squeeze a dollop of paint in your palm and smear it all around in a nonsensical swirl for no other reason than the fact that you can. And because let’s face it, rarely does life move along in a straight line!

This week’s weird and wild new releases from the Octopus Records, Amygdala, Deneb Records and Liftmusic libraries have some pretty awesome song titles to go along with the fun. My personal favs are Back Seat Funk, Bloody Rusty Saw, Frikin’ Bastard, Quickie Rock, Cheeky Chappy and Donde Es El Aeropuerto. So buckle up buttercup, let your hair down and get ready to get a little crazy!

OTP611 Eaten Alive!

In case you were wondering, the movie Eaten Alive! which appears to be filled with all sorts of awesomeness, really does exist! The plot synopsis according to IMDB is as follows: “A young woman teams up with an adventurer to find her missing sister in the jungles of New Guinea and they stumble upon a religious cult led by a deranged preacher whom has located his commune in an area inhabited by cannibals.” Ummmm…..yes please! With every amazingly horror-ble movie is an equally amazing score. OTP611 Eaten Alive! is that score. Please Octopus Records, send me the movie poster!

Library Of The Week: Octopus Records

I have been very vocal about my love for Horror movies on this blog over the years. When I was informed that the Primrose Music Library unveiled their new period Horror movie score label Octopus Records, well, I was ecstatic! Beyond the fact that the album covers are amazing (I’m not kidding when I say that I want those movie posters….EBay?), these film scores from the 1970′s and 1980′s are the real McCoy. Not retro remakes, but real scores. Talk about street cred!! These tracks will add instant cool to any production, get on it!

A Splash Of Local Color: New World Music – 3/16/12

When I moved to Los Angeles in 2004, I must admit I was typical of most LA transplants. I wanted to see the Hollywood sign and admire the stars that line the sidewalk of Hollywood Boulevard. These are the shrines of the entertainment industry after all! It doesn’t take long for you realize that seeing the Hollywood sign means having your friend take a picture a mile away from the actual sign while blocking traffic up Beachwood Canyon much to the dismay of those who actually live on the street. And seeing the stars on Hollywood Boulevard means walking the grimy street full of tacky gift shops full of cheap merchandise while getting your picture taken with a midget dressed like Mr.T for $5 (he gets mad if you don’t pay up front, just a heads up). The moral of the story? The locals know where to really go. Like the Magic Castle or the Hollywood Bowl for all of you about to visit LA!

This week’s new releases from the Cavendish Music, Pennybank Tunes and Amygdala Music libraries are refreshing splashes of local color as seen by the natives. Nothing Hollywood Boulevard about it!

5 Alarm Music Heats Up The Oscars

The 84th annual Academy Awards stormed through LA last Sunday like a Gucci-clad swashbuckler riding a white stallion! 5 Alarm Music may not have been swarmed with flash bulbs on the red carpet, but our music made its appearance in films nominated and awarded Hollywood’s highest honor. Move over, Meryl Streep!

The highly anticipated American version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara definitely lived up to expectations! With five nominations including Best Actress, Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound Mixing and Sound Editing, it makes this film a definite must-see.

I think everyone familiar with the Swedish version was curious how they were going to portray certain disturbing scenes. That chick is hard core! Listen for these two tracks from the Cavendish Music and JW Media Music catalogs:
