Peter Weller might be best-known as Robocop or Buckaroo Banzai to his fans, but his doctorate in art history forms a much better picture of who he is, along with a healthy dose of jazz. In this episode, Weller discusses the power of myth and the oral tradition, which drive not only the content we enjoy watching, but the entirety of human history. He discusses the interesting path that lead to his casting in Star Trek Into Darkness, what turned him onto jazz, and the exact circumstances of his attending Duke Ellington's funeral.

The news for Saturday, May 25, 2013

Links for this episode:

AT&T adds 'administrative fee' to wireless bills, stands to rake in hundreds of millions from unwitting customers | The Verge

AT&T has introduced a new "Mobility Administrative Fee" to its postpaid contracts. The $0.61 monthly fee ($7.32 per year) is being categorized "below the line" alongside tax and fees as an administrative surcharge. The fee came into effect on May 1st, and applies to all consumer contracts as well as "IRU" business contracts (business accounts where the user pays the bill).

HTC One 'Google Edition' with stock Android reportedly in the works | The Verge

HTC may follow Samsung's lead and produce a "Google Edition" of its latest flagship smartphone running stock Android. According to sources that spoke to Russell Holly at Geek, work on a version of the HTC One without its Sense software customizations is underway, with a US launch said to be "imminent." Holly previously leaked accurate information on the Galaxy S4 Google Edition ahead of its announcement at the I/O conference.

Sony and Lego research leads to DualShock-controlled minibots | The Verge

Worried it might lose younger block-buying customers to video games and computers, Lego has teamed up with Sony to bring the two closer together. PCWorld reports that researchers at Sony's Computer Science Laboratories in Tokyo have already started working on a number of experimental Lego products — including DualShock-controlled robots and camera-mounted figures. While Lego's main business remains construction focused, the company is experimenting with new prototypes to stay ahead of the curve, even if it has no firm plans to release any commercial products.

Xbox One games will require regular authentication checks, used games won't have a fee | Polygon

The Xbox One will not require gamers to pay a fee to reactivate a used game, but it will require a regular online spot check to verify the authenticity of games being played, according to sources familiar with the system.

While an internet connection will be required for the console, the company is also experimenting with special exemption codes that could be given to select people in very particular, internet-free situations, like active-duty soldiers serving in war zones, sources tell Polygon.

Google takes the 'last step' to shutdown its failed social network Buzz | The Verge

Google's Buzz social network stands as one of the company's most high-profile missteps to date, but the search giant is taking the "last step" to put the failed service behind it. Past Buzz users received an email (discovered by Engadget) from Google yesterday saying that it's moving all Buzz data to Google Drive. A pair of archives will appear in all users' Drives: one private, which contains all Buzz data, and one public, which will show data that was previously made public, and is accessible to anyone with the link. Neither of the archives will count towards your Google Drive storage allowance. The shift will take place on July 17th, and any users worried about the transition can head to their Google Profile to delete any posts they don't want transfered.

Zach Braff's 'Wish I Was Here' Kickstarter campaign beats its goal by over $1 million | The Verge

Last month Zach Braff started a Kickstarter campaign to help fund a new film entitled Wish I Was Here, and today the campaign wrapped — having surpassed its initial goal by over $1 million. Braff had initially sought $2 million, a figure he said would allow him to retain the creative control he sought for the project. The campaign broke that number within three days. Ultimately, Wish I Was Here raised more than $3.1 million dollars, with over 46,000 different individuals contributing.

Google Glass code reveals always-on listening mode | The Verge

A number of experimental features in Google Glass have been uncovered by the Android hacking community, including one that puts the headset in a constant listening mode awaiting an owner's command. Another lets you quickly snap a photo with an eye wink. These and other experiments remain hidden from regular users, however. Not only must the Glass hardware be rooted for you to gain access. but you'll also need to modify settings files on the device — a risky proposition for $1,500 Explorer Edition buyers. But as Android Police reports, those willing to take the plunge will be rewarded with some useful functionality.

The Coen Brothers Won’t Ever Revisit ‘The Big Lebowski’ | /Film

A sequel to The Big Lebowski never seemed all that likely to happen, but if you were still holding out hope somehow you might as well stop now. Joel and Ethan Coen have expressed their total lack of desire to make any more Lebowski-related films, including the long-rumored spinoff about Jesus Quintana. For that matter, it doesn’t sound like they have plans to revisit any of their older projects — apparently, they’re just not interested in follow-ups.

Original Transcript:
"Everyone, I’m elated to tell you that Tumblr will be joining Yahoo.

Before touching on how awesome this is, let me try to allay any concerns: We’re not turning purple. Our headquarters isn’t moving. Our team isn’t changing. Our roadmap isn’t changing. And our mission – to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve – certainly isn’t changing.

So what’s new? Simply, Tumblr gets better faster. The work ahead of us remains the same – and we still have a long way to go! – but with more resources to draw from.

Yahoo is the original Internet company, and Marissa and her team share our dream to make the Internet the ultimate creative canvas. I couldn’t be more excited to have her help. We also share a vision for Tumblr’s business that doesn’t compromise the community and product we love. Plus both our logos end with punctuation!

As always, everything that Tumblr is, we owe to this unbelievable community. We won’t let you down.

Fuck yeah,
David"

"I’m delighted to announce that we’ve reached an agreement to acquire Tumblr! We promise not to screw it up. "

In 2005, author David Foster Wallace was asked to give the commencement address to the 2005 graduating class of Kenyon College. However, the resulting speech didn't become widely known until 3 years later, after his tragic death. It is, without a doubt, some of the best life advice we've ever come across, and perhaps the most simple and elegant explanation of the real value of education.

Microsoft's decision to show off its new hardware in the opening minutes of its presentation sharply contrasted with Sony's PlayStation 4 press conference in February when the Japanese company decided not to reveal the look of its machine - a move that was mocked by some commentators.

Apple remains No.1 in the BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands - WPP

Apple remains the BrandZTM Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brand for 2013, worth $185 billion. Apple grew just +1% in the last year compared to a +51% growth for its closest competitor, Samsung, which is now no.30 in the global ranking with a brand value of $21 billion.

Google is also a serious challenger for the no.1 spot, reversing last year’s decline to grow +5% in brand value this year. The brand is no.2 in the ranking with a value of $114 billion. IBM is no.3 in the ranking with a brand value of $112 billion.

Here's my short and inconclusive list of things that will let us know iCloud might be ready for real world developer use.

Apple's WWDC Keynote Scheduled for Monday, June 10 - John Paczkowski - News - AllThingsD

Apple today said the keynote address for its annual Worldwide Developers Conference will occur on Monday, June 10, at Moscone Center in San Francisco. Not a big surprise, as that is the day the event kicks off. Speakers for the keynote have not been announced — nor are they likely to be. But expect to see CEO Tim Cook presiding over the standard cast of characters as they demonstrate the latest in Apple tech.

Nearly a year after Apple introduced its own Maps service in iOS 6 with Flyover 3D satellite views, Google is expanding its own online Maps to support similar 3D satellite imagery, with the same sorts of buckled roads and visual distortions Apple was castigated for last summer.

“That was a $75,000 tear,” said Stephen Fishler, co-owner of ComicConnect, a New York City online auction house that is selling Gonzalez’s treasure. He says the comic book would have graded out at 3.0 without the rip.

It’s that time of decade again. Time for a new Xbox. It took four years for Microsoft to go from the original Xbox to the Xbox 360. The transition from Xbox 360 to the newly announced Xbox One will take right around 8 years, and the 360 won’t be going away anytime soon either. The console business demands long upgrade cycles in order to make early investments in hardware (often sold at a loss) worthwhile. This last round was much longer that it ever should have been, so the Xbox One arrives to a very welcoming crowd.

BlackBerry founder Mike Lazaridis said he’s confident that users of iPhones and other devices will embrace the company’s BlackBerry Messenger platform, which will be offered on rival phones later this year.

The news for Thursday, May 23, 2013

Links for this episode:

Longtime Tech Industry Analyst Michael Gartenberg Joins Apple - Forbes

Michael Gartenberg, a longtime industry analyst known for covering digital media technologies and companies including Microsoft and Apple, has left his post as an analyst at Gartner Inc. to take a job with Apple.

Gartenberg didn’t immediately reply to a voicemail message left at his office at Apple asking him to talk about his new role for the Cupertino, California-based company. He is working on the marketing team under Apple’s global marketing chief Phil Schiller, according to sources.

Twitter launches two-factor authentication | Android Central

After a slew of high-profile account hacks, Twitter has finally launched a two-step verification system to keep your account from falling into the wrong hands. Once enrolled, each time you sign in to Twitter.com you will be asked to enter a six digit verification number sent by SMS to your phone. If you don't have your number, you can't log in.

Amazon eyes Apple with massive Kindle Fire expansion in over 170 countries | The Verge

Amazon has opened pre-orders for its Kindle Fire tablets in over 170 countries and expanded its Android Appstore in nearly 200 regions . It's the biggest device rollout the company has embarked on since it entered the tablet market, and sees it take on Apple in terms of availability and distribution. Before today, the Kindle Fire was available in only seven countries — including the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Japan.

Square arrives in Japan, its first market outside North America | The Verge

At a press event in Tokyo today, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey announced the long-awaited Japanese debut of Square — the mobile credit card processing service with the iconic white dongle. It’s a big deal for the company — its first expansion outside of North America, and in the third-largest economy in the world. But Japan also presents some unique challenges. Purchases of all kinds are still overwhelmingly done with cash, and Square competitor PayPal launched its own PayPal Here payment system last year without much fanfare. But Dorsey thinks his company can take off where others have failed to.

Kim Dotcom accuses Google, Facebook, and Twitter of violating his two-step security patent | The Verge

Hours after Twitter rolled out support for two-step verification, Kim Dotcom has claimed credit for inventing the security feature. In a series of tweets, the embattled Megaupload founder points to a patent dating back to 1997 as proof for his claim, and accuses companies including Google, Facebook, and Twitter of infringing his intellectual property rights.

'Around 5 million' HTC One smartphones sold since launch | The Verge

HTC has sold "around five million" of its flagship smartphone, the One, since launch. The impressive figure will abate fears that HTC is dead in the water – due to their current internal struggles – but does confirm that HTC isn't able to keep up with Samsung in sales. The company's largest rival in the Android smartphone space recently announced that it's shipped 10 million Galaxy S4s in less than a month.

Twitter for Mac updated again, now supports Notification Center | iMore.com

Twitter for Mac has received its second update in a matter of weeks, and this time we're treated to Notification Center support. It's been a long time in coming, especially considering the number of competing apps that already have the same support, but it's better late than never. This comes just a few weeks after the app was updated to support the Retina Display MacBook Pro.

Facebook puts HTC First launch on hold in the UK to 'focus on making Home better' | The Verge

The HTC First, an Android smartphone collaboration between HTC and Facebook, will not be coming to the UK — at least for now. Originally scheduled for a summer release via EE and Orange, Facebook confirmed to The Verge that it is "going to limit supporting new devices," and has asked EE and Orange to hold off deploying the HTC First while it works to make Home "substantially better."

Evernote adds custom reminders to its collaborative note-taking app on iOS, Mac and the Web - The Next Web

Evernote has added customizable reminders, one of the company’s most highly requested features, to its popular note-taking app on Mac, iOS and the Web today.Users will now see a small alarm clock with a tick symbol above each note. Clicking or tapping it once will initiate a new reminder, which can even be static – simply notifying users that it still hasn’t been completed – or scheduled for a particular date and time.

We knew it was coming, but now Mailbox for iPad is here! Released today into the App Store, Mailbox for iPad provides the same great email experience as the iPhone version but optimized for the larger screen. The iPad version comes by way of an update to the main app.

The news for Wednesday, May 22, 2013

Links for this episode:

Flickr Pro users are grandfathered in, get to keep unlimited storage for $25 a year

While Flickr did seem generous by offering free users 1TB of space as long as they're willing to put up with ads, it also got rid of the much-beloved Flickr Pro option that awarded unlimited storage for only $25 a year. Now the only upgrade options are to cough up $50 annually to go ad-free or $500 a year for 2TB instead of one. Many existing Pro users, thinking they would be forced one way or another, took to social media and Flickr forums to vent their frustrations at the potential loss of that limitless space.

HTC product chief reportedly leaves company | Android Central

HTC's Chief Product Officer Kouji Kodera has left the company, The Verge is reporting. Kodera's exit is the latest in a string of top-level departures at the struggling smartphone maker, including VP of Global Communications Jason Gordon, who announced his exit late last week.In recent months product strategy manager Eric Lin has also called it quits, and The Verge reports that global retail marketing manager Rebecca Rowland and director of digital marketing John Starkweather have also left. Writing on Twitter this Monday, a vocal Lin advised friends still working at HTC to "leave now," adding, "you'll be so much happier, I swear." Across the Atlantic, HTC EMEA President Florian Seiche recently departed for Nokia.

Amazon announced a new publishing platform today called Kindle Worlds, which will give both established authors and aspiring fan fiction writers the chance to earn royalties based on their work.Fan fiction is a rather murky topic, given that it often combines beloved characters and franchises in rather unusual scenarios. Regardless, the medium has proven to be incredibly popular on the Internet and it’s clear that Amazon sees an opportunity to earn some additional profits.

The next-generation Kinect will come to Windows PC eventually, Ben Kilgore, corporate vice president of interactive entertainment business confirmed with Polygon today. When asked if the new Kinect will see a release on the Windows PC, Kilgore responded with, "At some point down the line, yeah."All Xbox One units will ship with the Kinect sensor, which must be plugged in for the new console to operate, as it is "now an essential and integrated part of the platform."

Kinect is always listening on Xbox One, but privacy is a 'top priority' for Microsoft | Polygon

The Xbox One's Kinect microphone is always listening and waiting for specific commands, Microsoft's hardware program manager John Link told Polygon today.Microsoft revealed today that Xbox One will support commands native commands for powering the console on and off. Xbox 360 Kinect users can power off the console by using voice commands to navigate the menus, but not power on their consoles with the device. In response to a question about whether that functionality means that Kinect is always on, Link said that Kinect is always listening, but in a limited capacity.
Sony will leverage its streaming technology to bring PlayStation games to devices other than dedicated consoles as part of its ongoing turnaround, but said gaming profits will still suffer and lowered sales targets for its smartphones and cameras. The Tokyo-based company emphasized in a strategy presentation Tuesday that it met its core goal of rebounding from record losses and making a small profit last year under new CEO Kazuo Hirai. But it achieved that mainly through selling off buildings and stock holdings.

Steve Wilhite made the controversial declaration during an interview with the New York Times in the run up to the Webby Awards where he will accept a lifetime achievement award. He said he was proud of his creation but remained annoyed that most people failed to get its name right."The Oxford English Dictionary accepts both pronunciations," he said. "They are wrong. It is a soft 'G,' pronounced 'jif.' End of story."The announcement caused shock and outrage on Twitter, where users reacted with horror. "I refuse to accept this," said one, while another tweeted "My life has no meaning any more".

Vodafone UK will wait until September to launch its 4G LTE services, according to reports. British national newspaper The Guardian reports that Voda will miss the originally-targeted summer launch window for its LTE network, which runs on 800MHz and 2600MHz airwaves purchased as part of the recent 4G spectrum auction. The Guardian quotes Vodafone chief executive Vittorio Colao as saying "We want to be able to launch it when it's really ready. End of the summer means when there is going to be a good commercial window for launching it." That likely means the operator is waiting for refreshed iPhone hardware from Apple.

TOPIC: What would you do differently if you had a "safety net?"

This week, Dan and Merlin congratulate their pal, Marco, on the acquisition of a company he helped co-found.

Which leads to the nominal topic: what kind of safety net would you need to feel secure, do the things you'd like, and mostly banish the more persistent cumulonimbus clouds of your own anxiety?

Many angles are explored. Why was Elvis unhappy? How is habitual Schadenfreude and automatic bile ensmallening our culture? Can we ever be—let alone feel—truly secure? And, how much of our old selves do we end up lugging along inside every suitcase we carry?

Pretty great episode. Especially if you like the ones where Merlin gets all mad. Those are usually good ones.

When it comes to finding a comic book reading order online, the resources out there are either incomplete or “too” complete. Some sites will focus only on trade paperbacks, while others will split books up by page, sending a flashback from 2009 all the way back to 1972. Neither allows you to put your single issues in the order they were meant to be read. It’s with this goal that we set out to create our first reading order, and upon many requests have spread out to many other popular franchises.

On February 12, 2007, I pitched my pal, Nelson Minar, on an idea for a web service we could build that would make it easy for people to setup their own mini-site where they could post random bits of text, photos, etc.

This time Myke is joined by Merlin Mann. They have a very 'Back to Work'-esque discussion covering Adventure Time and Comics books (naturally), but with a great discussion around what it's like to work in large companies, living with a routine and why achieving tenure might not be all what it's cracked up to be.

As for me, while I wasn’t a “founder” financially, David was generous with my employee stock options back in the day. I won’t make yacht-and-helicopter money from the acquisition, and I won’t be switching to dedicated day and night iPhones. But as long as I manage investments properly and don’t spend recklessly, Tumblr has given my family a strong safety net and given me the freedom to work on whatever I want. And that’s exactly what I plan to do.

After Facebook's disastrous debut, the preferred clients of big banks walked away with huge profits. How?
The Godfather Saga is a TV miniseries that combines The Godfather and The Godfather Part II into one film. It originally aired on NBC over four consecutive nights (one three-hour segment and three two-hour segments) in November 1977. The Godfather Saga is also known as The Godfather: The Complete Novel For Television, The Godfather: A Novel for Television, and The Godfather Novella. The television version was the basis for a shorter, 1981 video release known as The Godfather 1902–1959: The Complete Epic. Following the release of The Godfather Part III in 1990, a third unified version was released to video in 1992 entitled The Godfather Trilogy: 1901–1980.

Secret Wars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kenner had licensed the DC Heroes. Mattel had He-Man, but wanted to hedge in case superheroes became the next big fad. They were interested in Marvel's characters, but only if we staged a publishing event that would get a lot of attention, and they could build a theme around. Fans, especially young fans often suggested to me "one big story with all the heroes and all the villains in it", so I proposed that. It flew. Mattel thought that kids responded well to the word "secret", so after a couple of working names bit the dust, we called the story "Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars".

Aspartame is a methyl ester of the aspartic acid/phenylalanine dipeptide. It was first sold under the brand name NutraSweet; since 2009 it also has been sold under the brand name AminoSweet. It was first synthesized in 1965 and the patent expired in 1992.

Zero–sum game - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In game theory and economic theory, a zero–sum game is a mathematical representation of a situation in which a participant's gain (or loss) of utility is exactly balanced by the losses (or gains) of the utility of the other participant(s). If the total gains of the participants are added up, and the total losses are subtracted, they will sum to zero. Thus cutting a cake, where taking a larger piece reduces the amount of cake available for others, is a zero–sum game if all participants value each unit of cake equally (see marginal utility). In contrast, non-zero–sum describes a situation in which the interacting parties' aggregate gains and losses are either less than or more than zero. A zero–sum game is also called a strictly competitive game while non-zero–sum games can be either competitive or non-competitive. Zero–sum games are most often solved with the minimax theorem which is closely related to linear programming duality, or with Nash equilibrium.

Fan service, fanservice, or service cut, is a term originating from anime and manga fandom for material in a series which is intentionally added to please the audience. It is about "servicing" the fan - giving the fans "exactly what they want". Fan service usually refers to "gratuitous titillation", but can also refer to intertextual references to other series.

<itunes:summary>TOPIC: What would you do differently if you had a "safety net?"
