CORONAVIRUS UPDATE A number of days ago, we made the painful but correct decision to close the salon for a temporary period to ensure the safety of our staff and clients and do our bit to alleviate the burden on the NHS. Yesterday’s announcement by the Government has now mandated that we must do this. This is the right thing for all in an attempt to stem and slow this horrific health crisis. Our team have been incredible, resilient and dedicated to all our wonderful clients who have shown so much support and understanding. Thank you to you all. We want to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible work being undertaken by all those in Front Line roles, exposing themselves to danger to treat, protect and supply our country. AND WE MUST KEEP DOING IT. Constantly. Washing our hands is one of the most important things to do in the current Coronavirus climate.

However, all that handwashing is going to take its toll on our skin. And if you are using alcohol-based sanitiser, it’s going to be even worse. It’s importsnt then to have a good hand cream to apply after each wash.

L’Occitane has acted admirably during the Covid-19 Coronavirus crisis, and when the brand closed its shops across the UK and Ireland on March 21, it began donating handcream to the NHS, and offering free hand cream to NHS workers in store.

In the UK L’Occitane has now donated over 10,000 hand creams to NHS and HSE staff working in the UK and Ireland. The company has also donated to health workers in China, Korea, and France.

As well as this, the L’Occitane Group has decided to reassign some of its facilities to manufacture 70,000 litres of hand sanitiser. These products will be donated to the health authorities and healthcare workers in France. Also, the Group will distribute 25,000 units of soap and hand cream to the staff of Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Paris (AP–HP – the Paris university hospital trust). This is part of its efforts to support healthcare workers fighting the epidemic across the countries in which it operates.

The first 10,000 300ml bottles of hand sanitiser were shipped this week. By the end of the week, 50,000 300ml bottles, containing 15,000 litres of disinfectant, will have been manufactured. They will be used by healthcare services, firefighters and hospitals, including AP–HP. The Group plans to scale up production to some 70,000 litres.

But if you get yourself a tub of It Cosmetics brand new night cream, no-one will ever tell!

It’s called Confidence in Your Beauty Sleep Night Cream, and I’ve been trialling this cream this week, and I have to admit that the texture did throw me at first. It has a sort of bouncy texture, almost jelly-like, but not a gel. It’s also a sort of pale lilac, parma violet colour, which is quite odd, but I don’t dislike it.

It’s been created especially to use overnight when your skin cell turnover peaks, to improve surface cell renewal through exfoliation. It features what IT Cosmetics call ‘Rest & Restore Technology’, whatever that is! And it claims to visibly improve five of the top signs of ageing skin – fine lines, wrinkles, dryness, dullness and loss of firmness.

IT suggests that after just one sleep your skin will feel hydrated, smooth and supple, and after seven sleeps, your fine lines will diminish in appearance and your skin will feel firmer and look plumper.

I’m not going to say I’ve noticed that happening, to be honest, but my skin does feel good when I wake up, but it is quite odd to use. They tell you to use it generously, use upward sweeping motions, and don’t rinse. I find that quite odd, that anyone would even think about rinsing a night cream off, but there you go!

You have to use it last before bed, because, it apparently locks in any previously applied skincare. Again, this is kind of odd. I don’t go to bed with cleanser all over my face, so not sure it would transfer onto the pillow without this cream.

As far as ingredients, it has hyaluronic acid in it, and adenosine, both commonly used in skincare for moisturising and wrinkle-control. There are ceramides in there too to help form the skin’s barrier, and retain moisture.

So, combine the two and buy mum a new perfume. Here are a few suggestions, according to your mum’s personality!

 

THE ECO-WARRIOR

If your mum is on a mission to embrace cruelty-free, vegan and clean products, then check out Kierin NYC Fragrances, and in particular the brilliantly named Sunday Brunch. It’s fresh and bright, and super cheerful. It has top notes of Italian bergamot, a heart of lemon, and a base of Earl Grey tea. It’s cruelty-free, free of nasties, and made with recyclable materials.

Does your mum like to stand out from the crowd? Then you need to gift her one of these unique scents, created by some of the world’s finest perfumers. SpringPop is perfect for the first fine days where the air is filled with aromas of freshly cut grass . It has notes of basil, bergamot, musk and magnolia, and  is actually a unisex scent. (But aren’t most really? I love wearing what might be deemed more tradtional ‘masculine scents’.)

This lovely light scent is inexpensive, and yet such a treat for the senses. It has a delicate note of green tea, top notes of citrus and spices, and the heart is a  beautiful jasmine from Grasse. The base has a mix of white musks, amber and wood. Spritz it on to brighten your day. It’s also labelled as a unisex scent.

 THE FASHIONISTA

For that mum who is effortlessly stylish, choose this effortlessly stylish scent from classic American brand Banana Republic. Piure White is fresh and clean,a nd is all about 1990.   The top notes are green tea, bergamot, and grapefruit, a heart of jasmine, african violet leaf and lavender, and a base of white vetiver, musk, and amber.

 THE VINTAGE QUEEN

J.U.S Rosamunda, £210, 75ml, Liberty London

Is mum a retro/vintage fan? Then she might well appreicste this lovely bottle from J.U.S  – made using a vintage mould and given a modern twist with a bright, pop art design. The scent, Rosamunda, is obviously the vintage classic, rose. But this  scent was created by gathering precious flowers in the fields of Grasse, from the stem from the root to the delicate thorns. That’s probably why it has the price tag it has. But is mum worth it? Of course she is!

THE BEACH GODDESS

Does mum like to lie in the sun? Then this is her fragrance. Once worn, you’ll be transported to the tiny island of Salina, north of Sicily. Oh to be transported there for real right now!  It smells just like holidays – blissful. The top notes are lemon, pine needles, and sea salt. In the face of the Coronavirus outbreak, we’ve all been told to wash our hands more. We should be washing them regularly anyway, and always with soap and water.

You might want to carry a hand sanitizer when you are out and about, but only one with alcohol content will be effective against a virus – and good luck finding them.

I was sent this Scottish-themed hand sanitizer from Mad Beauty a few weeks ago, It contains alcohol, and a Tuberose scent, and a cute Highland cow on the packaging. It’s £4.99 – but they’re currently out of stock.

 

Washing our hands for 20 seconds or longer should be a lovely experience, so treat yourself to a super fancy hand wash. Jo Loves has introduced two new fragrances of Hand Wash and Hand Lotion.

Eucalyptus & Cedar Woods is a perfect marriage of classic and contemporary. it is very crisp and clean and was inspired by memories of Jo’s past and her recent travels. Eucalyptus has always taken Jo back to working in a flower shop, aged 16, where the medicinal scent would fill the air. Here she has balanced it with the creamy smell of Cedarwood evoked from a recent trip to the Middle East. There’s vetiver in there at the base as well.

Seville Orange & Neroli is a super summery scent that was inspired by a summer holiday to a little Hacienda on the outskirts of Seville. It blends butter orange, mandarin, and lemon with neroli and spearmint.

You can use the hand washes every day, and the hand lotion to follow. Remember if you are using any hand product with alcohol in it, you really do need to use hand cream more often as well.
