The American Automobile Association (AAA) wants Congress to cut long-standing programs that support trails, biking and walking in order to divert those funds to the highway system. (Read the background.)

These programs have played a major role in the development of more than 19,000 miles of rail-trail across the country, most likely including your favorite local trail. These trails and other walking and bicycling facilities allow individuals across the country to enjoy the outdoors and safely and easily travel without a car for many short trips—while saving money and gas, and getting exercise in the process.

AAA has forgotten that bicyclists and trail lovers drive, support AAA, pay gas taxes and want balanced transportation systems that provide the choice to get around in a variety of ways.

Midnight Tour - potential documentary?

5RDS welcomed producers and videographers who have previously worked with National Geographic and Discovery Channel on a late night guided tour to Mound Island. Joel and Michael escorted our guests while searching for Salamanders and Frogs in an effort to build a potential documentary on the Delta! Joel even caught a "cottonmouth" for the awed visitors, who left both impressed and keen for more experiences from 5RDS!

We look forward to working further with our guests on the creation of a documentary that brings the Delta into households nationwide!

Baldwin County Swimming Advisory Lifted

Effective July 30, the Alabama Department of Public Health has lifted the swimming advisory for gulf waters off Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan based on improvements in water conditions. However, the department warns that there may still be sporadic oil on or near the beaches and discourages individuals from entering waters if there is visible oil present.

House Committee Passes Bill Securing Funding for Conservation Recreation Program

WASHINGTON, DC — July 15, 2010 — The House Natural Resources Committee passed legislation today that will provide dedicated funding for land conservation and outdoor recreation by a vote of 27 to 21 under the leadership of Chairman Nick Rahall (D-WV). The provision, included in the Consolidated Land, Energy, and Aquatic Resources Act of 2009 (CLEAR Act, HR 3534), would annually fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) at its authorized level of $900 million. At that level, the program would be able to proactively address backlogged conservation and recreation needs at the local, state and federal level. Weakening amendments were decisively rejected thanks to the efforts of Chairman Rahall and the support of many conservation leaders on the committee.

“The CLEAR Act gives the American people the means to shape a healthy future for our lands and waters,” commented Robert Bendick, Director of U.S. Government Relations with The Nature Conservancy. “We applaud the House Committee on Natural Resources for creating an important piece of legislation that includes full, dedicated funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund. This fund protects land and water to balance the use of offshore oil and gas resources, ensure clean air and water, and support jobs and local economies. We urge Congress to pass the CLEAR Act without delay to preserve the natural resources that Americans depend upon and treasure.”

“The LWCF was intended to mitigate in part the potential damages from offshore oil and gas production by protecting some of America’s most precious land resources and providing close-to-home recreational opportunities for Americans in every state in the nation,” said Will Rogers, President of the Trust for Public Land. “Given the tragic situation in the Gulf, the vision behind the Land and Water Conservation Fund is even more relevant than ever and we applaud Chairman Rahall’s leadership for including dedicated funding in the CLEAR Act.”

LWCF is supposed to receive $900 million per year — a drop in the bucket of offshore revenues that typically tally over $5 billion — but has been shortchanged by Congress nearly every year, with revenues regularly being diverted to other purposes. Full funding has been appropriated only once in the 45-year history of the LWCF, and recently declined to a low of $138 million in 2007. This shortfall has resulted in a huge land protection and outdoor recreation backlog of unmet funding needs across our federal public lands, and state and local parks. In a recent national bipartisan poll conducted by Public Opinion Strategies and FM3, 85 percent of respondents view the LWCF as more important today in light of the oil spill.

“OCS production has always been predicated on the idea that the depletion of one national, non-renewable natural resource must be balanced by the long-term protection of threatened habitats, beaches, waterways, and other special places across America,” noted Bill Meadows, President of The Wilderness Society. “As the devastating effects of the Deepwater Horizon spill demonstrate, OCS production can itself be a major threat to our nation’s already-limited inventory of natural resources. Full, reliable funding of LWCF is needed to provide a fair environmental return to the public, and accordingly, it is time to renew the commitment to conservation through full and permanent funding of the program.”

In spite of rarely receiving its due, LWCF has been instrumental in many of the places that are most dear to us as a nation. From local parks and playgrounds, where kids can get outside to play, to greenbelts and recreational trails that connect and enhance local communities, to state parks that provide hiking, biking, and camping and help to sustain wildlife, to federal public lands used for hunting, fishing, paddling, and our most pristine national parks, wildlife refuges, and wilderness areas — LWCF has provided a continuum of conservation that has touched all Americans.

9 new National Recreation Trail designations for AL

The Department of the Interior announced the newly designated National Recreation Trail yesterday. Our wonderful Eastern shore got a nod, with the Eastern Shore Trail:

"The Eastern Shore Trail is a 36-mile multi-purpose trail for pedestrian and non-motorized vehicle use along the eastern shore of Mobile Bay in Baldwin County, Alabama. The trail traverses waterfront, historic, wilderness and small town areas, both off- road and paralleling roads. Because of the wide variation in grade, elevated boardwalks and high-rise bridges, both wooden and metal, are common components. The most significant product of this trail effort is the demonstrated support garnered by Baldwin County volunteers. As one trailside resident says, “The trail is our front porch... where we connect with friends and neighbors.”

"National Trails Day June 5: Secretary Salazar Announces Designation of 31 New National Recreation Trails in 15 States Supporting "Let’s Move" in America’s Great Outdoors

WASHINGTON, DC – Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today announced the designation of 31 trails in 15 states as national recreation trails, adding more than 716 miles of trails to the National Trails System. The announcement comes in anticipation of National Trails Day on June 5, when trail dedications and other activities will take place at new and existing trails.

"From coast to coast, the National Trails System helps connect American families with the wonders of the great outdoors," said Salazar. "These new national recreation trails, built through partnerships with local communities and stakeholders, will create new opportunities for fitness and stewardship while creating a lasting legacy for our children and grandchildren."

In announcing the new designations, Salazar highlighted two important initiatives established by President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama to encourage Americans to enjoy the great outdoors as part of a healthier lifestyle.

Last month, President Obama launched the “America’s Great Outdoors Initiative” to protect special places and to help Americans reconnect to the outdoors. Under his leadership, the administration is reaching out to communities across the country to hear good ideas about conservation and to learn about the efforts that ordinary Americans are making to conserve our land, water, and wildlife. Meanwhile, the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” initiative is promoting a healthier lifestyle for children by encouraging them to eat healthier foods and become more physically active.

“I hope that millions of Americans will take advantage of the opportunities provided by our national trails to embrace a fuller, healthier lifestyle,”Salazar said.

Every national park will waive entrance fees on the weekend of June 5-6 to help encourage people of all ages to get outside and use trails for exercise and exploration. In addition, hundreds of organized activities including hikes, educational programs, bike rides, trail rehabilitation projects, festivals, paddle trips, and trail dedications will take place. The national recreation trail designation recognizes existing trails and trail systems that link communities to recreational opportunities on public lands and in local parks across the nation. The first ones were established in 1971.

Each of the trails will receive a certificate of designation, a letter of congratulations from Secretary Salazar, and national recreation trail markers. The trails join a network of more than 1,000 previously designated trails that total more than 12,500 miles.

The national recreation trail program is jointly administered by the National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service in conjunction with a number of other federal and nonprofit partners, notably American Trails, which hosts the national recreation trails website at http://www.americantrails.org/nationalrecreationtrails.

Can Any Good Come of the Oil Spill?

In the last two weeks, we've been asked many times: "will the oil spill affect the Delta should the oil reach this far north?" The answer, of course, is yes. It could be catastrophic. However, could we also benefit in any way from this threat to our eco-system? The answer is the same. Yes!

Sometimes we take for granted the serene beauty that lies at our back door. For those of you who've taken our tours or explored this vast Delta by kayak or canoe, you might remember the incredible wildlife you saw: the egrets and herons feeding at the shor; the osprey diving for a meal or keeping a close watch over their nest; or the alligator sunning himself on the bank. The white pelicans and white ibis that over winter here; the beautiful cypress with Spanish Moss draped over their branches; and the lilies; the Blue flag iris; Golden Club and other wetland flowers that are now in bloom. You may also remember "hearing" the"quiet" of the rustling of the grass or twittering of songbirds.

Maybe it's time to reflect on the opportunity we have to explore and learn about this unique and delicate environment, the recreational opportunities it provides, its significance in the lives and lifestyle of the residents of the Mobile Bay area, and those who visit. Maybe it's time to revisit and take a closer look at the plants whose roots hold the soil in place, where birds, mammals and reptiles, seen and unseen, feed, nest and live. Maybe we should listen more carefully for the songs and calls of the birds both in the air, water and on land.

Gators Galore

Well spring has definitely arrived and we are seeing 'Gators galore out here in the Delta. From baby gators to 13ft monsters, it is a real treat for guests and staff alike. In addition the bird life is in abundance, with Bald Eagles, Osprey catching fish and nesting, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Blue Heron and many more showing off for our visitors. The Alabama Red Bellied Turtles are also hatching, so please keep an eye out as you drive through the park and help them get to the safety of the water injury free.

The weather has been gorgeous lately at 5 Rivers, the Delta is starting to bloom and water enthusiasts of all ages are coming out to enjoy the sunshine! We've plenty of Canoes/Kayaks available for those interested in renting for the day. Rates start at $35. We of course still have the Eco tours on the Pontoon boat.

Poker Paddle A Success!!

On Sunday March 7th Wild Native held a unique kayaking event. An "on the water" scavenger hunt named - The Poker Paddle. Contestants were given maps of the route and were required to navigate to specific areas along the Delta. Once there, they would search the river banks for hidden boxes that contained their next set of directions and playing cards.

Hunt participants relaxed and socialized at the conclusion of the Paddle, while enjoying homemade pulled pork sandwiches courtesy of Wild Native and Captain Michael Dorie. Envelopes were then opened and players' hands revealed: Two pair, aces and fours was the winning hand held by Paul Babb. Even those who didn't win prizes went away happy with having spent a beautiful day on the water and making some new acquaintances along the way.

Another Bird & Gator Filled Day on the Delta!

Today's tour was great. The temperature was nice and the water was like glass. We had a good crowd of families and friends spending time together.....away from the mall! Great to see on this "Shopping Weekend" right after Thanksgiving.

Passengers on the boat were treated to a great diversity of wildlife. Before even leaving the dock we saw Osprey circling looking for fish and a Double-Crested Cormorant did a fly-by just as we cast off. Along the way up river we saw a Snowy Egret and some American Coots, all feeding in the shallow waters along the Blakeley River. We made our way into the Appalachee River and saw a flock of White Pelicans overhead. We then encountered a Great Blue Heron and some more Coots. All of the birds we had seen to this point were then trumped by the sun-bathing American Alligator! We sat quietly and observed this gator for some time. In fact, he was so intent on basking in the sun that we drove off with him still sitting there. Our presence never disturbed him. On our way downstream we saw more White Pelicans and a KingFisher. All in all a great day in the Delta.

Next Delta Kayak Paddling Safari - September 5th, 2009

For those looking for an outdoor adventure close to home, the Mobile Tensaw Delta provides just that. This 250,000 acre wetland, considered to be the second largest in the country, gives many a chance to see nature firsthand.

5 Rivers Delta Safaris has just announced a kayak tour that would make experiencing such a vast ecosystem even easier. On September 5th, 2009, at 9am, the outdoor adventure company will host a paddle that will be guided by three guides whose experience range from zoology & marine biology to herpetology. The trip will provide those interested in getting an up close and personal experience with nature the opportunity to do so, whether it’s for bird watching, nature photography or just the enjoyment of nature. This six mile paddle is not only great for those already familiar with the sport of kayaking, but it is also great for anyone who is just giving the sport a try for the first time. (see previous blog regarding a recent trip below).

The price of the trip is $54 per person and includes transportation to the drop in site as well as the guide service. Discounts are available for groups of 4 or more Paddlers. It does not, however, include rental of a kayak. Delta Safaris can arrange for rental of one at an additional price. Space for the trip is limited so call and make a reservation soon.

5 Rivers Announces October 11 Trip To Bottle Creek Indian Mounds

5 Rivers Delta Resource Center and Five Rivers Delta Safaris have always offered those looking to get an up close and personal view of the 2nd largest wetland in the country just that: an intimate look at what animals reside there, what plants can be discovered there and what a unique habitat like the Mobile-Tensaw Delta holds. For the first time, 5 Rivers is now offering the chance to learn of other secrets held by the Delta.

On Sunday, October 11th, 2009, 5 Rivers will host a guided tour into the history of the Delta by visiting its highest point: The Bottle Creek Indian Mounds. This collection of 18 earthen mounds was built using only raw manpower and primitive tools somewhere between 1200 and 1450 AD, with the tallest mound being 45 feet high. This trip gives people the rare opportunity to experience for themselves how this rich natural environment supported those who built these extensive mounds. The sight is largely undisturbed by tourists because of it's remote location and is patrolled and preserved by the Alabama Historical Commission to prevent vandalism.

The trip itself will begin at 9am with an introduction to Bottle Creek and the Mississippian Indian culture. Shuttles will then take participants to Lower Bryant Landing to board the pontoon boat, "The Pelican", for the 45 minute boat trip to Mound Island. On hand to answer questions and provide information will be the University of South Alabama's archaeologists Dr. Greg Waslekov and Bonnie Gums, herpetologist Joel Borden and 5 Rivers biologist Hank Burch. Morning coffee, lunch and snacks will be provided on the trip as well. There is a short 3/4 mile hike up to the mounds and back.

The cost of the trip is $60 per person and space is limited. Children under the age of 12 may not find this trip suitable. Paddling Safaris in the Mobile Delta

The perfect fix for any outdoor junkie is by far kayaking the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. The Delta consists of over 200,000 acres of wetland environment with a plethora of plants and wildlife to observe. With over 300 species of birds that make their way through Alabama each year the Delta is easily a bird lovers delight.

Even with this in mind, while out on my own personal excursion, I had no idea I would see such a variety of birds as I did. Although common in this area it is always pleasant to spot the Brown Pelican dive-bombing into the water with their massive wingspan, or the Osprey plunging feet first to display their awesome hunting ability. Amongst the usual variety of Gulls and Terns we saw varieties of birds that are rarely seen in everyday life around buildings, roadways and human settlement.

The first great sighting of the day (besides several alligators) was a rookery of Prothonotary Warblers, with their breath taking neon yellow color. One paddler even saw a hummingbird but was unable to identify it because of its speed. Upon entering Little Bateau Bay we came across a family of Moorhens, who literally let me observe from just a few feet away. Along the same lines as a Moorhen we also spotted the brilliantly colored Purple Gallinule.

The wading birds were of great variety, we saw Great Blue, Little Blue and Night Herons and even the gorgeous Green Heron. We observed Great and Snowy Egrets as well as several Anhingas that were basking in the suns warmth after feeding. We then encountered the Glossy Ibis and White Ibis which were unmistakable with their long curved beaks.

Perhaps my favorite find of the day was the Black-Necked Stilt, which browsed along the waters edge alone, walking gracefully while picking up food with its long needle-like beak.

Overall, the trip was amazing, a definite fix to my outdoor addiction. The greatest part of all had to be the diversity. The amount of wildlife we saw in such a short period of time was almost overwhelming. I can only hope that everyone has an opportunity for such an experience in the Delta.

This month, I've taken the place of an Osprey hatchling and my first thought is - do I have to forsake the Sunday morning brunch for a combination of raw fish and other goodies? At least I always have a wine tasting sunset cruise that Michael will gladly take me out on! :-) If
you haven't been, you must - The sunsets are absolutely amazing.

In last Month's competition, admittedly the question did require you to physically visit 5 Rivers and check the Delta Hall plaque closely, we were unfortunately not able to give any prizes away. For the correct answers, please see our Mobile Quiz space to the right. We look forward to an opportunity to give away this month's prize.

Michael has previously mentioned our Eco-Warrior program that we are "slowly" putting into place. If you are involved with an organisation in the Delta, who is need of Volunteers, then we would like to hear from you. Especially if the volunteering is unique and Delta focused. We aim to our program provide unique insights to the Delta for Eco-Warriors of all ages and welcome any ideas, requests for participation and/or support.

Unfortunately we had no correct answers for the quiz last month - What is the real name of the Delta Hall at 5 Rivers. The correct answer was indeed the "James Hillman Griggs Delta Hall", so named for our long serving and recently retired Director of State Lands.

The 2nd part of the Quiz required the "code word" we had attached to the bottom of the plaque commemorating this hall. The correct answer was "Port City Safaris", but you would have had to look closely!

'Tis the Season for Delta Photography

Welcome back everyone. Whew, where to begin? I want to start by thanking all of you who continue to read our newsletter each month. The responses and feedback we’ve received has been great. So, keep it up!

I also want to thank all the school teachers and group organizers that have kept us so busy these last few weeks. It really is a privilege to take young students out and give them a first hand look at this wonderful outdoor area.

With the warming weather we have been spending more time than ever in the Delta and have made some exciting discoveries. The re-emergence of the alligators and greater activity amongst all the other animals leads to excellent viewing and photo opportunities.

Bring your binoculars and/or camera and come see for yourself!

As the Osprey guard their nests and the eggs held within them,
we are able to see them in action!

SUNSET / WINE CRUISES
Another favorite has returned!

With the great weather comes our popular Wine Tasting & Sunset Cruises. Come out and experience a beautiful Delta sunset while enjoying a glass of wine and some great company. Beginning in late April we will be offering these Wine Tasting Cruises once a month. These cruises will be offered on the last Saturday of each month. Times vary slightly as summer progresses, here is the upcoming schedule:

April 25th: 5:30pm – 7:30pm

May 30th: 6:00pm – 8:00pm

June 27th: 6:30pm – 8:30pm

These cruises include wine, hors d’euvres and a beautiful sunset, all for $36 per person. Reservations are required so call now!

An Easter Excursion
A group of staff and guests took advantage of 5 Rivers closure on Easter Sunday to explore Bay Minette as part of one of our 1/2 day Kayak Safaris. Our Delta expert Joel Borden lead the group as we meandered amongst the plethora of waterlilly's currently lining the basin. I was amazed at how stunning the water lilly's were up close, with these wonderful bright yellow blooms! Travelling down the quiet, peaceful river with tree lined banks really gave me the feeling I had escaped! And no doubt the wildlife felt the same way, especially one majestic blue heron who put on a show for the group. We finished the day with a tasty barbeque served up by Captain Michael on the banks of the river.
