Nuworld Kayo is a Southside rapper and member of the Nuworld collective. In this episode’s interview, he discusses the formation of Nuworld, his musical style and influences, as well as the role of Islam in his art and hip-hop.

Chicago R&B & Pop singer Victor! has been riding a wave of his own with a unique style that is generating much attention. In this interview we discuss his upbringing and family background in music, beginning in music, the current Mexican-American wave of artists in the US, navigating his popularity as a teenager, and what to expect from his forthcoming project.

Northside artist Aubry, born in Evanston, Illinois, has been surrounded by music since a young age and has been making music since his freshman year of high school. Aside from music, Aubry is also a poet and competed in the Louder Than a Bomb 2017 competition for the Evanston Township High School poetry team, who went to Semi Finals for the first time ever that year. Aubry released his debut project, “How I Did This Year” in July 2017 and produced a majority of the tape himself. He is also one half of the rap duo, “Stranded Civilians”, and continues to make genre blending content through vocal performance and production.

Brothers Brian & Matt Sumague aka Suburban Kid McFly and Matt Audio Dope grace our studios. We discuss Suburban Kid McFly’s solo career, growing up in a Filipino household, his first two solo projects “SKMF 1 & 2”,  and the creation process, growth and a culmination of an 8 year career, and dive into Matt’s history of making music, producing, and now his current passion engineering and how that has helped shape his career as a producer.

Chicago rapper, singer and producer has come a long way in the last few years since he was last in on The 5th Element. This time around we talk about the growth in his life in the last few years, his beginnings in music, discuss his recently released EP “Songs She Gets Dressed To”, his creation process, and his personal philosophy through some hot takes.

Cole Kruggel, Don Hullio, and Darwin Derequito of Classick Studios have been three of Chicago’s premiere engineers that have been crafting Chicago’s current Hip-Hop sound. In this interview we discuss the role of engineers, how they broke into the music scene and began at Classick Studios, artists they have helped develop, some stories behind some of our favorite songs, among many other defining moments by three of Chicago’s dopest engineers.

99theProducer and 5ivee are some of Milwaukee’s finest making a name of their own in the city of Chicago. We talk about their beginning in music, growing up in Milwaukee, some defining moments in music, and talk about their latest releases and the creative process behind them.

We chop it up with Musa about joining AEMMP Records (Columbia College’s student-run label), his recently released project Lately I Been Sol Searching and the inspirations behind it, the importance of having a team and how that has changed his trajectory, discuss the West side of Chicago, break down his latest singles and aggressiveness on the mic, and sets up what we can expect on his forthcoming Lately I Been Sol Searching vol. 2, which drops on his birthday (March 2nd).

Through this interview we get a close look at the rise of The Boy Illinois, the importance of maintaining one’s roots and culture, we discuss politics in labels and Chicago’s Hip-Hop scene and how to navigate around it as an independent artists, and lastly we discuss his project Windy as well as the forthcoming concert that followed days after this interview.

Ric Wilson is a 21-year-old Black Self-proclaimed Artist, Performer and Prison Abolitionist from the South-Side of Chicago. On August 30th, 2016 Ric dropped his EP “Soul Bounce” and following that weekend he performed at Northcoast Music Festival opening for BASSNECTAR on the Main Stage. Ric now continues to travel the city of Chicago and the Country performing and speaking on social issues.

Ric also, is one of the 8 delegates chosen to travel to Geneva, Switzerland in November of 2014 representing the We Charge Genocide coalition. They successfully presented a shadow report and testified at the United Nations, charging the Chicago Police Department with genocide and torture actions on Black and brown youth within the city of Chicago helping to create a worldwide connection. The trip was covered all over the US and countries foreign including Daily Mail (UK), 20 Minuten (Switzerland), MSN France, Japan Times, Zee News (India), Gulf Times (Qatar), IOL News (South Africa), Straits Times (Singapore), Business Reporter (Pakistan), Breitbart.

Nate Marshall is from the South Side of Chicago. He is the author of Wild Hundreds and an editor of The BreakBeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hop. Wild Hundreds has been honored with the Black Caucus of the American Library Association’s award for Poetry Book of the Year and nominated for an NAACP Image Award. His last rap album, Grown came out in 2015 with his group Daily Lyrical Product. Nate is a member of The Dark Noise Collective. He completed a B.A. in English and African American Diaspora Studies at Vanderbilt University and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing at The University of Michigan’s Helen Zell Writers’ Program. Nate has received fellowships from Cave Canem, The Poetry Foundation, and The University of Michigan. He is the National Program Director of Louder Than A Bomb Youth Poetry Festival and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Northwestern University.
