Here is that music. Tempered by the fact that the New Complexity movement (of Ferneyhough and Carter fame) is now several decades old and life in the pleasant surroundings of Stanford, California, can't be that disturbing. Here, young composition grads apply their fierce minds and scurrying intellects to the problems of chamber music. They present it in a series known simply as 541.

Jason Federmeyer
"Inward / Echo" (mp3)
from "541 Vol. 3 - Music From Stanford"
(Innova Recordings)

Buy at iTunes Music Store
Buy at Rhapsody

With fresh atmospheres, and a depth previously unfathomable, Souyuan will amaze initiates and pundits alike with its complexity and pureness of form. Shape Shifter showcases both his writing and his playing as he leads his working quintet through a challenging program of his originals. However, Gould defined himself as “a composer who plays piano”. He applied the label "Opus 1" to his String Quartet in F minor. There were to be no higher opus numbers, for Gould then launched his dazzling international career as a pianist. Composed between 1953 and 1955, the period during which he was getting ready to record the Goldberg Variations for the first time, the quartet represents an astonishing intellectual mosaic of musical aesthetics.

Alcan Quartet
"String Quartet Op. 1" (mp3)
from "Glenn Gould - Ernest MacMillan: String quartets"
(Atma Classique)

Buy at iTunes Music Store
Buy at Rhapsody
More On This Album

Pedrito Martinez and Pete Cosey)

Lauded by Time Out New York as “the best bassist in the world,” Melvin Gibbs is a veteran of the New York music scene. He’s also the leader of Elevated Entity — a stalwart collective that includes John Medeski (keyboards), electric Miles Davis vet Pete Cosey (guitar), P-Funk legend Blackbyrd McKnight (guitar), and Lou Reed band alum JT Lewis (drums). These players and more appear on Ancients Speak, a transcendent melding of musical styles both ancestral and Afro-futuristic, co-produced with Arto Lindsay and Kassin.

Melvin Gibbs' Elevated Entity
"Canto Por Odudua (feat.
