extended (at least five hours) gathering of non-stop vertical worship
and prayer for eastern North Carolina. One goal for 2012 is to grow the

such as Building Hope Community Life Center, Hope of Glory Ministries,
Elevate Campus Clubs, Certain Hope Ministries, Mike and Rebekah Gervasi
(YWAM), Will and Joanna Luper (Christian Educator’s Outreach), as well
as local pastors, student ministers and government officials. We
provided “air coverage” of prayer for the “ground war” of evangelism and
justice, sometimes praying strategically on-site before events. The results of our united efforts were many people putting their faith in Christ and the continuing transformation of cities.

in 2011, as it has the past three years. This is an ongoing answer to
our prayer that God’s kingdom would come in Greenville as in heaven.

few dozen pastors and local leaders united in the courtroom of the Pitt
County Courthouse on October 31st and asked for God’s rain on the
Halloween festivities. That night, rain literally came and the typical
party scene was a ghost town - some of the bars even closed early!

ministers, young adults and others continue to walk into 6:22 events,
find a place of refreshment and encounter the presence of the living
God, being changed from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:18)!

It was one of the largest, most powerful and unique Burns we have ever had. The Burn was a part of a larger weekend called Renaissance 2012, with an emphasis on stirring creative arts in the Christian community. With that in mind, all of the Burn worship leaders brought their own original songs and arrangements. No Hillsong or Jesus Culture covers. ;) The result was that worshipers from across eastern North Carolina united to release the region's indigenous sound of worship non-stop for six hours! I know of at least NINE churches represented,
with attendees from at least SIX cities. It was beautiful.

The night began with Sonnet, Harmony Church's worship band, offering original arrangements of acoustic hymns. This was a great way to begin the night with a heavy emphasis on Jesus Christ, the Gospel and the cross laying a foundation without any hype. Hearing dozens of voices lifted to sing verses of hymns, accapella at times, helped create an atmosphere of united worship.

Boiler Room favorites, Divine Obsession followed with a passionate time of praise and worship. During their set, Cory and I felt led to share about how God's love casts out fear (I John 4:18), and we felt like God was releasing His love over people to set them free. One of my favorite moments was at the end of a song when Stephanie Gardner began to prophesy to the gathering through song. God was calling His children back to Him - emphasizing His unconditional love for us. Returning to God's love would be a theme throughout the night.

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear
involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. I John 4:18

Next Nathan Storey, of Raleigh, NC, led a brief acoustic folk worship set. Towards the end of his set, a young girl named Kaylen shared a poem that God had given her during worship. She felt like she was one of the ones that God was wanting to set free from fear so that she could be all God made her to be. After sharing a heartfelt poem, we all let out a shout and stood to sing a chorus of Nathan's song that says "Love will come back for us...."

Kevin Gardner of Goldsboro, NC followed with a passionate worship set starting with "I Know You Love Me" - again emphasizing God's love for us!

Michael and Sara Thorsby of New Bern, NC led a sweet time of acoustic worship, with Sara playing flute on a few songs! This was a very refreshing set to simply soak and rest in God's presence.

Michael Etheridge played next and his set began to stir joy and freedom in the room. The crowd had thinned out some at that point (as it was getting later into the night), but those that remained were there to WORSHIP! Worshipers danced and shouted as Mike sang "You love is all I need....."

Ray Hartsfield, Beaty Bass and I finished off the night with a few more hours of worship, ending with a simple prophetic song.... "return to your first love".

"I know your works,
your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil.
And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and
have found them liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary. Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first
works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from
its place—unless you repent. Revelation 2:2-5

theBurn will continue in a monthly basis on the 2nd Friday of the month at the Boiler Room from 7pm until 3am.

Join us on Saturday, January 21st for the first of these meetings.

What kinds of people are our churches producing today? Is there extravagant kindness, overcoming gentleness and persistent self-control? With Christlikeness as our standard as well as the mandate to do "everything" Jesus told his disciples to do, we should soberly weigh the promises of God anew. The only way forward to these ends is to be with Jesus and learn to receive His love, His power and His mission in a continual way. These 3 workshops will provide a context to examine the ways of God and begin to learn the means by which we can live with Him consciously every day.

Greg Burnett is a leader in the body of Christ based in the Hampton Roads area in Virginia. His experience includes working in the areas of city-wide transformation, day & night prayer and becoming disciples of Jesus.

I plan on doing a 3-week series of (short) talks recounting Stories and Signposts of the Boiler Room's history. The dates are December 2, 9 and 16. Worship will start at 7pm each week, and I will take 20-30 minutes each night to stop and share.

Over the past month the Holy Spirit has guided me through the past 4-5 years of ministry, revealing His presence to me in significant ways. I have stumbled upon some forgotten stories, significant prophetic words and "supernatural coincidences" that really confirm God's desire for 24/7 worship and prayer, a place where He can dwell among unified believers. I am becoming more convinced each day that this desire for 24/7 worship and prayer is REAL, it is GOD, and it is COMING. As I share these stories, I believe you will be stirred with faith, as I have been. As a community I believe recalling these moments in the Boiler Room's history will also give us fresh clarity in how to move forward in building day and night worship and prayer at the Boiler Room.

I am hoping to have these nights videotaped so that we can have these stories available to distribute in the future. However, the video is not confirmed yet, so I would encourage you to be there in person if at all possible!

The inevitable result of day and night worship and prayer is transformation - God's kingdom coming to earth! We see this very clearly when we partner with local church and para-church groups to target specific outreach events in prayer.

Over the last two weeks Cory, Matthew and a handful of others have spent time singing, praying and prophesying over three neighborhoods in Greenville (Moyewood, Kearney Park and Hopkins Park), both on-site and from the Boiler Room. Last weekend, 11 people put their faith in Christ during the Hope of Glory Ministries outreach and tons of families got blessed with food!

We pray in faith knowing that God hears us and that the bowls are filling up in heaven, but it is so encouraging to see very tangibly that our prayers are working! This is a rhetorical question from Jesus. The answer is yes. He will answer day and night prayer!

To go a little deeper, let’s look at the whole parable in Luke 18:1-8.

1 Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, 2 saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. 3 Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, ‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’ 4 And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, 5 yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’” 6 Then the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said. 7 And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? 8 I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?”

Unlike some parables, Jesus gives away the meaning from the very beginning - “men always ought to pray and not lose heart.” The obvious implication is that it will be hard to keep praying! The context of Luke 17 and Luke 18:8 makes it clear that Jesus is particularly concerned that the trials and tribulations leading up to his second coming will test our faith and our diligence in prayer. Jesus’ goal is that we would be praying day and night with perseverance until He returns, and the key to this is understanding who God is and who we are in Christ.

I could be tempting to interpret this parable by directly comparing the unjust judge with God and the widow with the Church. However, this type of parable is not comparing God to the unjust judge, it is contrasting God’s nature and our identity with that of the unjust judge and the widow. Widows were some of the least respected people in Hebrew culture. Jesus is essentially saying “If even an heartless judge would give in to a widow, then a good, just, loving God would answer the day and night prayers of His chosen sons and daughters!” It is the same writing style Jesus used in Luke 11:13 where he says

“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

God is not a mean judge and we are not a begging widow. When we pray, we are a Bride approaching a compassionate bridegroom! I know that my love for my wife is limited, but unless I’m having a selfish moment, my desire is to give her anything for which she asks! The only time I would say “no” to a request would be if I knew it was in her best interest. This is why Jesus contrasts the widow imagery by calling us His “elect” in verse 7. Elect means that we are “picked out, chosen” specifically by God! God says we are a “chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (I Peter 2:9). We can approach Him confidently and without shame in Christ. King David had this same confidence which allowed him to offer his undignified worship to God and tell his accusers that his worship “was before the LORD, who chose me...” (II Sam. 6:21). He knew God had chosen him and loved him, and he was not afraid to boldly praise God, even if his own family disapproved! He was confident in God’s love and destiny for his life.

This really all comes down to faith. That is why, after calling us to day & night prayer, Jesus says
“Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?”. Faith comes from hearing and believing God’s word (Romans 10:17). We will not continue to worship and pray if we do not believe John 3:16 - that God loves us unconditionally. Faith is required to believe that God really is our Father, Bridegroom and Friend. Faith is required to believe that He really does love us. We really are His elect, his chosen ones, His bride, His children. Faith is what allows us to persevere in the midst of seemingly unanswered prayers. Faith in God’s word and His nature allows us to keep praying as His justice tarries. We believe God is faithful to His word. We must believe God is good and God is love. He is not an unjust judge. It is the Gospel - the death and resurrection of Jesus for our salvation - that is a constant reminder of the Father’s heart for us. The cross constantly attests to His love. In faith we believe that He really will avenge His elect who cry out day and night!

Luke 18 tells us that justice is coming to cities and the nations through a day & night cry of a chosen generation. Justice simply means that the wrong things are made right! As we agree with God’s desire for the earth to be ruled by His kingdom (Matthew 6:10), He responds to our prayers with His authority, power and activity to change the world! God’s heart is certainly crying out for justice, and we can join this “cry” mentioned in Luke 18:7. The Hebrew word translated into “cry out” means “to cry, speak with a high, strong voice; to cry to one for help, to implore his aid.” In His sovereignty God has chosen the transformation of cities and nations to depend on His elect crying out in day & night prayer.

Finally, Jesus says this cry will be “day and night”. This Hebrew phrase that literally means unceasing and unending. Isaiah 60 mentions gates being opened in heaven day and night (Is. 60:11), yet the same chapter says there is not night in heaven (Is. 60:19)! Obviously day and night doesn’t mean a little bit of prayer when the sun is up and a little bit of prayer when it gets dark. It means constantly - 24/7! This constant worship and prayer is not about earning love or favor from God, but partnering with God’s will in faith through his free grace in Christ. This grace causes a response in his people to draw nearer to God in worship and prayer. I have heard it said that God is more interested in the dialogue of prayer than the results. He’s all about love and relationship! Maybe this is one of the reasons why He desires 24/7 worship and prayer. Because He loves interacting with us!

Hundreds of communities around the world are responding to Jesus’ love and justice by gathering in 24/7 worship and prayer. The Greenville Boiler Room is joining this Spirit-led, worldwide movement. Jesus indicated that a day and night cry will come from the Church when Christ returns. Will you be a part of it? Everyone can do something! Commit your Friday nights to worshiping and serving at the Boiler Room. If your schedule permits, commit one morning a week to come pray with us. Do a Secret Place internship. Give a monthly financial gift to support the Boiler Room or one of our missionaries. Get involved!

Thank you to those who are already involved! I hope reviewing this passage in Luke 18 has given you a fresh reminder as to why we are pursuing this 24/7 worship and prayer thing. God is doing it and we are joining Him!

Revelation 5:8

Every prayer we pray as a believer is collected as incense in bowls in heaven. No prayer is wasted! And in God's timing, the bowls in heaven "fill up" and God brings heaven to earth. There is no formula to the timing - we leave that up to God. But we cry out in faith knowing that God's power is released when we worship, sing, pray and intercede. Sometimes it is immediately and many times it takes persistence over time before we see the fulfillment.

This week I think one of the bowls in heaven filled up and God is moving in Greenville!

#1 - Unity & Prayer Among Pastors
On Monday at noon, about 15 folks gathered in a court room at the Pitt County Courthouse to repent and pray for our city. About 5-7 pastors were present, and other intercessors and ministry leaders from the city were also present. I was honored to provide some worship music for the meeting. THIS UNITED PRAYER IS A HUGE ANSWER TO PRAYER! First of all, it's a miracle that there was a prayer was in the court room! A highlight moment for me was when we all gathered in a circle holding hands, and one pastor began to repent for the leaders in the body of Christ being divided and competitive. It was awesome. I wish we had gotten some photos! Huge thanks to Rob Lee for being the forerunner that initiated this gathering.

At the Boiler Room we have prayed consistently (and will continue to pray) for unity in the Church in Greenville from Romans 15:5-6.

Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Additionally, there is a youth pastors gathering on Wednesday morning, where a handful of youth leaders in the area are gathering to discuss how they can unite to reach the high schools and work together to strengthen the Christian clubs on the campuses. We have been specifically praying for a harvest among students since May, and God is answering our prayers! I have heard from multiple youth leaders about their growth this fall and I know 23 students were saved at Open Door Ministries' youth meeting Sunday night!

#2 Greenville Downtown Halloween FAIL
The last song we sang at the courthouse on Monday was "Let It Rain". Rob felt like we needed to pray for rain to ruin the downtown Greenville Halloween celebrations. Well - it did! Check out the video below from WNCT about how Greenville was a "ghost town" on Halloween!

Since we have been in the Boiler Room, targeting downtown in prayer during Halloween has always been an emphasis. We desire peace, safety and morality in that part of town.

#3 - Human Trafficking Bust
Three people were arrested in a human trafficking bust right outside of Greenville near Pactolus. The woman being held against her will was rescued! I know Chris and Anna are trying to get involved in helping the girl found housing and get back on her feet. Chris and Anna are great friends of 6:22 who are raising support to work full-time to fight human trafficking in North Carolina. I know the ENC Stop Human Trafficking Now group has been raising awareness (and probably some behind the scenes prayer) on this issue as well.

We have prayed against Human Trafficking at the Boiler Room, and constantly pray for justice in Greenville. As heaven invades earth, injustices like human trafficking will begin to exposed. God promises justice for those who cry out to Him day and night (see Luke 18:1-8).

Woohoo! Praise God for all these answers to prayer. There is still much to pray about. The Boiler Room is open Monday-Thursdays from 9-10:30am and Friday nights at 7pm. Join us!

Here are some important Scriptures about fasting.

Matthew 5:16-18
Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

Matthew 9:14-17
Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?" And Jesus said to them, "Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse. Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved."

Matthew 17:14-21
And when they had come to the multitude, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. So I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not cure him." Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me.” And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" So Jesus said to them, Because of your unbelief;for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.

Here are two practical resources to help you in fasting. These will be given as handouts on Friday night.

Fasting 101 : Practical Guidelines (by Lou Engle)

Fasting Guidelines and Information (by Mike Bickle/IHOP)

Jesus is encountering his disciples post-resurrection. It's a familiar story. They have gone fishing and caught nothing all night. Jesus shows up and says to cast your net on the other side of the boat and their nets overflow with a catch. In the Bible fishing symbolizes missions or evangelism (Matthew 4:19, Mark 1:17). Remember this symbolism as you recount the story. Christians are fishermen and the fish are lost souls.

Here is what stuck out to me... the fishermen caught exponentially more fish within a few moments of hearing and obeying Jesus' voice than they caught with hours of hard work that was initiated on their own (see verse 3). Could fruitfullness and effectiveness in missions be increased by shifting our priorities from work to prayer? Could revival be as simple as hearing God's voice and doing what He says?

I believe much of our activity as a Church is equivalent to the disciples self-motivated, late night fishing trip. We are wasting much time, energy and resources and accomplishing very little. Church programs, activities, men's traditions, excessive organizational administration and ineffective religious structures have replaced intimate relationship with God himself. Let me be clear-working hard to advance the Gospel is good. We can't just hide away and pray all day. But we have to start our lives and ministry in prayer and allow God's voice to lead us, or our work will be in vain.

This is not a minor adjustment. This is a paradigm shift. A lifestyle change. This is going back to the biblical reality that ministry to others must flow from ministry to God. It will be difficult to adjust our lives and will go against the grain (in and out of the church!). Otherwise, we will be busy like Martha and miss the "one thing needed" that Mary received-the voice of God.

This Friday's worship is still ON at 7pm, and you do not want to miss it! Collide campus ministry is graciously allowing us to use their facility at 211 West 9th. St. a few blocks from the Boiler Room. Click here for directions.

The Board of Directors had a meeting while Matthew Lilley was on sabbatical and determined that we do not have the financial means to be able to have Worshipfest this year.

As most of you know, Matthew raises his support through 6:22 Ministries. He lost several partners in the past through months due the financial constraints of the donors. His support dropped over $600 a month. The Board of Directors told Matthew that he must stop all planning for Worshipfest and concentrate on fund raising so that he can support his family. Matthew in the past has been the main person who organized Worshipfest and so without a primary organizer Worshipfest just cannot be held.

6:22 Ministries has lost several donors due to the economy. Our bank account is very low and we are just barely meeting our Boiler Room expenses. We just do not know how we could cover the costs of promotion, bands, etc. if we had Worshipfest.

So we are cancelling Worshipfest for this year. But we trust the Lord for greater times ahead. Please pray for provision for the ministry, and for wisdom/grace as Matthew endeavor’s to raise some money. We are starting back our Friday night meetings this week, and we are very excited about what God has in store this fall! We are kind of frustrated but not totally discouraged. We still believe strongly in God's desire for 6:22 and His goodness to provide for us.

Thanks and our greatest blessings to you.

Donnie Luper
Our weekly Friday night worship gatherings resume this upcoming Friday, August 19 from 7pm until 9:30pm. Divine Obsession will be back at the Boiler Room leading an awesome time of worship for our first Friday this semester. Come waste your Friday night loving Jesus!

Please note that 6:22 will be going until 9:30 this fall so we can spend some extended time lingering in God's presence and take some time to crack open our Bibles to study some biblical foundations of what takes place at the Boiler Room.

Here is a song from Divine Obsession...

This will allow us to offer a full-time, accredited track for those who feel called to full-time ministry, in addition to our current part-time track. This partnership will relieve 6:22 leaders of some of their teaching duties and provide 6:22’s internships with accreditation. Matthew and Cory will be taking the CTS classes this fall semester so that we will be prepared to offer the full-time internship track starting in 2012. We are now accepting applications for the Secret Place internships for the spring of 2012, beginning in January. We have updated the application. For all of the details, visit the Secret Place Internship page on our web site or download the application.

The Secret Place Internship is a consecrated season of ministry to the Lord (Acts 13:2) where young adults can develop disciplines to root them in a lifestyle of encounter with God.
The internships are named after the “secret place” (Psalm 27:5, 31:20, 91:1, Matthew 6:1-18) of God’s presence.

But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. Matthew 6:6

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1

The primary intern activity is to spend extended amounts of time in worship, prayer and Bible meditation, both personally and corporately.

Interns will also engage in classes, Bible studies and book studies on topics such as…

Day & Night Worship & Prayer (6:22 Staff)

6:22’s Core Values (6:22 Staff)

Attributes of God (A.W. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion " -1 Peter 5:8

This topic, understanding who Satan is, may seem irrelevant or unnecessary; however, I would argue that it is highly important. Reason being, if we do not know who Satan is we will not know how he acts. For example, if we know that someone who is kind they will be kind towards us, or if we know that someone is a jerk they will act like a jerk towards us. The same is true for Satan. Therefore, we need to know who he is in order to know how he acts (Pro 27:19).

Who is Satan (unexhausted list):

Proud: Isaiah 14:12-15

Murderer & Lair: John 8:44

Thief: John 10:10

Several times in scripture we see the truth that who we are will dictate what we do. The same is true for Satan. We see that he is proud, a murderer, a thief, and the father of lies. It is no surprise that all he wants to do is steal and kill and destroy. This week we will focus on who Satan is in order to give a good foundation into how he works.

As seen in Isaiah 14:12-15 Satan is a highly proud man, "But you said in your heart, 'I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, and I will sit on the mount of assembly in the recesses of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.'" Notice the language used here, "you said... I will raise... I will sit... I will ascend... I will make."

First, there was no command from God to do any of these actions; therefore, it was not done in faith (REF!!! not in faith-sin, Heb 11:6). In order for Satan to act outside of faith in God he would have disobeyed God. These actions of disobedience are the opposite of what we see from Jesus (REF!!!). Satan made up his own way, and Jesus followed the way of His Father (John 8:42). This is why in John 8:44 Jesus pointed out to the Scribes and Pharisees that they were of the Devil, because they followed after the way of the Devil.

Secondly, Satan was trying to make himself like God. This is insanity. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus and remember who He is! Christ, "who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men" (Phil 2:6-7). The very person Christ came to serve was the same person Satan is trying to be equal to. Satan is not even the Son of God and he was trying to put himself as an equal of God. This is how you know who is of the Devil and of God (1 John 4:1-3). Bottom line, Satan is proud, Jesus is humble. Satan wants to be served, Jesus came to serve. This is one reason why Jesus was anointed to set the captives free (Isaiah 61:3), to set us free from the chains Satan throws on us in order that we would serve him. The reason we serve Satan is because of the condemnation he sets over our heads. He holds our sins against us before God (Revelation 12:10), and joining in with Satan's pride we try to live according to the law to gain our righteousness by action and not grace in Christ. Thanks be to God who sent His Son Christ, Jesus!

John 8:44 will further give evidence that Satan is a proud man, "there is no truth in him [Satan] Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies." Just as seen in Isaiah 14:12-15 Satan acted outside of faith, we see that same truth here again in John 8:44 when Jesus says that he "speaks from his own nature."

This is so important for Christians to understand- God is not a liar (Numbers 23:19), and there is no confusion in Him! Sometimes the reason we are so confused with who God is, or how He works is because we have a mixture of Satan's lies and God's truth in us. We also need to know that God is not a lair so that our confidence in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit will be firm and unshakable (Eph 3:17-19). So many people struggle in their life because they have stupid, and false ideas about who God really is in their hearts and minds. No matter how painful the truth it is because God loves us. God wants the truth in us to set us free from the father of lies (John 8:32).

Our God is jealous and He wants us for Himself (Ex 34:14, Isaiah 42:8). One reason why Jesus came was to bring reconciliation for us towards the Father. If we believe the father of lies over our heavenly Father then we will be lost in a world of confusion, pride and striving trying to get back to the Father. May Satan be exposed and the light of the gospel be in our hearts! Satan is on his own initiative and is out to deceive us to draw us away from God. We see the contrast in Jesus who simply obeyed our Father and did His will. So much to the point that Jesus said it was His diet (Matt 4:4, Luke 4:4).

Lastly we will look at John 10:10, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly." In a small nut-shell Satan wants to steal, kill and destroy God's glory. The question is how does he do that? How does the devil who prowls around like a roaring lion seek to steal, kill and destroy God's glory? That answer is for next week.

For now we want to focus on identifying that Satan is a thief. We see an example of this when Jesus is tempted in the desert, Matthew 4:5-6 "Then the devil took Him into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, 'If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, '<sup class="xref" value="(<a href="#cen-NASB-23216H" title="See cross-reference H">H</a>)">HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU'; and 'ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP, SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'" Notice what happens here when Jesus is tempted- Satan uses the word of God to tempt Him! This happens often in our culture. For example, the pastors on TV who rob widows and the naive for their money, and in the "prosperity gospel." These things of taking God's word and using it for self gain is from hell and of Satan. Satan is called a thief in John 10:10 because he wants to take everything that belongs to God, mainly His glory, and steal it for himself. Thus we see that Satan is self centered only seeking to satisfy himself.

The most important thing about the character of Satan is for us not to be afraid of him! There is temptation to be intimidated by Satan and his demons. We do not need to be the "bullied-Christians" who do not stand up in the authority of God through Christ (Romans 16:20, Luke 10"19). Simply put Jesus is really big, and as Christians we can stand in relationship with Christ above Satan (Revelation 1:18).When we understand that Christ is our strength then we will become more confident in the authority that Christ have given us through prayer (Ephesians 6:17-18, 2 Corinthians 10:3-5).

"Until you believe that life is war, you cannot know what prayer is for" (John Piper). Just as David used a slingshot the hurl a rock and defeat Goliath, so we, as Children of God, hurl our prayers at our enemies to defeat them. The key to prayer is first relationship with God, and understanding that it is His victory, not ours (Proverbs 21:31). No matter how awesome the verbage used in our prayers it is the power of the Holy Spirit through Christ that gives us the victory in our prayers. What a gift God has given us! It is time that the church stop being bullied by her enemies and pray to the Father for victory.

In closing, I do not know the magnitude of Satan's character, but we can see a clear contrast in scripture of who the person of Satan and God are. My hope is that you do not let this blog scare you; rather, that you would see how weak Satan is and realize that in Christ we have the victory. The point is not to scare people in to hopelessness but rather to get them to turn towards Jesus! This is the same end and the gospel- an exposure of sin so that we will see our lacking state and then turn to Christ for righteousness. Therefore, we should not be afraid; rather, stand firm in Christ Jesus and the truth in Him! Our victory is in relationship with the Father (Psalm 91).

Along with Matthew, he will be a “prayer missionary” committed to seeing the gospel of Jesus go forth in Greenville, with his primary role being intercessory prayer. In addition to praying at least a few hours each day, he will be assisting Matthew as he leads the various ministries of 6:22.

Cory was one of 6:22’s first Secret Place interns. Following the Secret Place Internship, Cory entered into a 9-month, full-time Leadership Internship with Matthew. Cory feels called to full-time ministry in some capacity, and is excited to be able to serve 6:22 as a prayer missionary as he continues part-time as a college student. Cory is a former marine from New Bern, NC. As a missionary, Cory will be responsible for raising monthly financial support, which he will be working on over the summer.
