Lowering the weapon, he shot Gold in the stomach.

Gold fell to the ground, wincing, and the man pointed the gun at his head a second time and pulled the trigger. The gun jammed again.

Twice more, the assailant tried to shoot Gold in the head. Each time, the gun jammed, and the man glanced furtively over his shoulder, shaking the malfunctioning weapon.

Finally, he gave up, jumped in his vehicle and sped away, leaving the gut-shot good Samaritan and the woman the man had tried to abduct behind him on the sidewalk.

The chilling footage, captured by a private security camera positioned overhead, was turned over Friday morning to the New Orleans Police Department. As of Friday evening, the department said the shooter was still at large, and Gold was in guarded condition, surrounded by family and friends at University Medical Center. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Tulane University is offering a $10,000 reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest and indictment of the assailant.

The woman, whom police did not identify, was treated for minor injuries and released.

Watch the video below:

They have seen more of the worst of Nigeria that it becomes difficult to trust anyone. But let me disclose something to you today because there is a difference between belief and reality

I did an unusual thing in our last days in government. I’m not sure I should tell you before people say I’m boasting. Ok, I actually left $5.6bn in the NLNG alone. I doubt if such ever happened but no one is talking about it.

I’m not seeking to be praised but to be acknowledged that I made some little contributions. That money could have been wasted on frivolities but I was determined to keep something for the incoming government once we lost the election."

On what she would do differently if God should give her another chance, she said:

"The priority now is how to take care of my poor health. I’m battling with a very serious type of cancer. I have tried everything to contain the malevolent spread.

I have had two surgeries. The first was to take out the lumps from my breast and the second was to cut deeper into the tissues. I’ve gone through Chemotherapy and now I’m starting Radiotherapy. I’m praying this one goes well because I don’t know if there is any thing the doctors can do beyond this.

The steroids were devastating and at a point I slipped into coma on July 28. My sugar level went wild first to 25 and then to 80. The doctors called it a near-miss and I now know what they mean when people say, 'health is wealth'."

The tank tops are also something really different that provide some fun for the chickens. They keep them warm and makes the chickens easy to identify"

The women own around 60 hens and half of them are former battery chickens, who, unfortunately, having spent all their lives in cages, are not able to acclimatise to normal weather conditions.

She added that: "We’ve also had inquiries so far from Canada as well as local people asking for the jumpers. If anyone would like to purchase one we ask for a donation for an AIDS orphanage in South Africa."

But rather than apologise, they came down in a commando-like fashion and started accusing us of brushing and damaging their bus.

“Surprised, my brother, Ayorinde Adewale, who drove the car, said ‘But you are the ones who brushed our car, this is a democracy, you should be apologising to us.’ This apparently infuriated them and they immediately dealt him blows. They also dealt me blows and tried to force my door on the passenger’s side open. Seeing that the door was locked, they moved over, opened the driver’s door and continued beating, dragging my brother out and stomping on him.
Seeing that it was getting out of hand, we started pleading with them to let us go, but rather than soften down, they intensified the beating. I approached the one who looked the most senior and an officer, his name tag read: M. Bukar. He wore a rank with an eagle and a star, I think he’s a colonel; but he ignored me and they continued the beating, tearing my clothes in the process; you can see that I’m virtually in rags.

Look at my brother’s face, it is full of bruises. They also bundled my brother into the bus and ordered me to drive along to the barracks. As I made to drive the car, the door of my car, which they had forced open, brushed their bus. This further infuriated them and they intensified the beating. This time, they bundled me into the bus as well, while one of them drove my car. They totally ignored the crowd that had now gathered and was pleading with them to let us go.”

He added, “Inside their barrack at Oshodi, they ordered us to start rolling on the bare floor, while one of them went to get their panel-beater and painter. Thereafter, we were charged N13,000 for the replacement of one of their bus lights and for the damage on the panel. We told them we didn’t have enough cash but they told us to use our ATM cards or be locked up in the barrack until we could pay. So we went to an ATM at a First Bank branch in the barrack, where we withdrew the money and paid. It was only after that that we were allowed to go.”
Sherifdeen, who resides in Shasha, Akowonjo said the soldiers conduct was most unbefitting of proper training and sense of responsibility. He wondered why they should be treated like that in their country and hope that the Nigerian Army authorities would look into the matter.

They called the police, who swarmed the narrow, secluded road in minutes.

Tom and Marge Crosby said the toddler had her head shaved and was suffering from a “big contusion” or bruise mark on her head the size of a softball.

Albers was first taken to Beverly Hospital where she was listed in fair condition. She was later transferred to Boston Children's Hospital where she is currently being treated.

The suspect Abigail Hannah is being held without bail.

The lady has been serving as a youth corps member in Zamfara state since October.

Accoring to Saturday Punch, Olusayo’s dead body was found in her home in Ile-Ife, Osun, in the early hours of Wednesday, November 11. The deceased shared the apartment with her husband of six months simply known as Niyi.

The vigilant neigbours noticed that there were no activities in the apartment of the couple. They decided to forcibly enter the premise, as the door was locked and nobody replied their multiple calls. The neigbours found the body of the young woman sprawled on the floor in the apartment, but Niyi was not there. He was unavailable on his mobile phone as well.

Finally, the man replied, but he kept giving different locations of his whereabouts. One time he said he was travelling to Togo, then Ghana, or Ondo.

The deceased had only been back home a couple of days when she met her death. According to the deceased’s family, Niyi occasionally had disagreements with his late wife over financial issues, as his business was reportedly not doing well.

The deceased’s father, Pastor Rotimi Gbadebo, shared his thoughts with The Punch.

“In August, they had a fight and I had to call them to a meeting along with the family of the husband. I warned them that I must not hear of any fight between them again.

“She left for her husband’s house on Tuesday. She called for financial assistance and I promised her that I would send the money the following day. That was the last time I heard from my daughter.

“The man had been misbehaving all along. He would sometimes abandon the house and leave my daughter uncared for, for days at a time. Sometimes, my daughter would be sick and he would tell her to go back to her parents’ house to get treatment (the husband neither visited nor called for three weeks).”

According to Saturday PUNCH, an autopsy was conducted, but the result has not been released yet.

The body of the deceased was about to be buried last Saturday, November 14, but an argument between the Gbadebos (family of the deceased) and the Olukuyides (family of the husband) degenerated to the extent that the corpse had to be returned to the mortuary.

The deceased’s family alleged the Olukuyides were treating Olusayo’s death with levity while the husband’s family insisted Niyi had no hand in her death. A brother of the suspect, Olayinka, said it was not true that Niyi was at home when his wife died.

On the controversy of Olusayo’s husband whereabouts the brother said:

“He had the intention of going to Ghana initially but financial challenges had been delaying him. We have visited the house where his wife died with the policemen investigating her death and some of the neighbours attested to the fact that Olusayo was always sick.

“The deceased always complained of headache, which they said sometimes disoriented her. The truth is, my brother did not spend enough time with her during their five-year courtship. Her family rarely allowed them to see each other, which was why he did not know about her health challenges.

“My brother kept asking about the result of the medical test they were mandated to do by the church before their wedding. He kept asking but they did not show him.”
Currently Niyi is in custody in Osogbo, as investigation continues.

In this eye-opening piece, Samuel Daniel explains why the only person stopping the growth we need is you!

Nigerians

As he gave his inaugural speech on January 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy, one of America’s greatest presidents, threw a timeless charge at his fellow Americans.

He said: “And so my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”.

John F. Kennedy must have known that his countrymen were consumed with impatience for change and were very concerned about the dividends of good leadership which he can bring them; he knew that they wanted very much to know what they will benefit from what they considered “the coming of fresh air” that JFK’s presidency promised. He knew that they were too carried away by their burning desire for ‘newness’ to the extent that they were apt to forget what their own responsibilities were in the process of bringing about the ‘democratic goodies’. And so his inaugural charge was meant to rejuvenate the people’s sense of obligation and thrust their onuses before their faces.

Today, decades after that fateful inaugural morning, John F. Kennedy is still chanting aloud his ageless words to our ears in a world where self has become extremely glorified.

It is true that Nigeria has never been devoid of critics at all. Right from the inception of this great nation, we have had critics who voiced out their displeasure at the way things were run, and tried to change popular notion. In fact our independence was achieved chiefly or even only because of that. We do not here, wish to discredit the noble act of criticizing wrong procedures or corrupt tendencies, but we are stating emphatically that even though it is such a noble thing to stand against evil, it is not so noble to be part of the evil we are trying to stand against. If we are going to change a particular trend, we cannot be swayed by it. We cannot be part of the evil itself.

It is already 55 years after independence was won and we still have critics who in fact, keep rising up every day in all parts of this country. These days it is not only those in national limelight that criticize government; everyone is doing that now. From the smallest villages to our most sophisticated townships, the general outcry is “Why can’t our leaders change for God’s sake?”

Nigerians have an unfading tradition of placing blames on the leadership of the nation when we talk about the failure of the Nigerian State. They very often forget or may not even be aware, that the ‘Nigerian State’ also comprises of their persons and the roles they have to play in it. They isolate themselves from the field of play and lay the burden of transformation on the one man they conceive as ‘the messiah’.

Dear Nigerian, next time, before you scream at the picture of Mr. President (because you may have no guts to scream at him when you see him in real life – you may not even get that opportunity anyway), claiming that he has not done his part to alleviate the suffering of the Nigerian people, first think about the way you treated your wife this morning, how she greeted you and you refused to reply for no reason whatsoever. Do you know she will go out with a dejected feeling that will surely affect other people negatively and consequently contribute to the growing tension in the air?

What about the man you lied to in order to cheat him out of his money? What about the so-called diplomacy you apply when carrying out your daily activities, which involves deceiving other people and making false advances just to keep your head up and make personal gain? Do you know that you are part of Nigeria’s problem? Have you forgotten that day that you fought in public and even broke someone’s head right there for everyone to see? Do you know that you are contributing immensely to fuelling the menace of terrorism and the idea of jungle justice which has taken over Nigeria? What about your children that you leave unattended to, every morning? Do you know that they will grow up and join the massively growing restive youths that are turning Nigeria upside down?

Can you still remember that period when you had the chance to help that young boy and that young girl to achieve their goals in life and yet refused to help even though you could have? Do you know that when you refuse to care when you can, to lend a helping hand when indeed you can render help; when you think only of yourself and what you alone will gain, that you are one of Nigeria’s biggest problems?

Never has it been heard that a captain ferried people across a river even when they refused to enter the vessel. Can you feed a man who has his mouth sealed with gum? How can you bear the same yoke with a man who is three feet shorter than you? If we must see the desired change in our dear country, we cannot become indifferent to the progressive efforts of those at the helm. We cannot become isolated groups of growling, complaining people. We have to come together and become focal components of the struggle to achieve that change. We have to allow the efforts of our leaders make sense!

We cry that we have no electricity yet we go about vandalizing our electric wires and power lines. We say we don’t have water but we have constantly made a mockery of our public taps by making sure they are constantly in need of repair because of the ways we handle them. We cry that the police harass us every day and yet we make no effort to know the dictates of our constitution and challenge the policemen on the highway. We just relax, completely complacent in our grief and complain away our comfort.

What have you done for this country? You whose only preoccupation is to sit and grumble, what have you done to alleviate suffering?

You know, you do not have to think too far. What about that poor little child by the end of the street? Have you ever lent him a helping hand? And that old deprived widow living all alone by herself in that ancient mud hut; what have you done about her? What about that orphaned youth with great potentials who walks your street every day; have you thought of prodding him forward yet?

Dear Nigerian, if this country must change, that change must start from YOU!

The great Confucius of China once said: “To put the nation in order, we must first put the family in order; to put the family in order, we must first cultivate our personal life; we must first set our hearts right”.

He was absolutely correct! The change starts from home, from that place where you are, from that little corner beside the fireplace where you are preparing the meal, from that company where you work. It starts with you. You have the absolute power to change this country. Stop blaming our leaders all the time. If they can’t do it, why can’t you start the process? Make Nigeria great today and that means that you have to change the way you think.

Now, like John F. Kennedy said 54 years ago, I am saying using this simple poetic style to say:

And so Fellow Nigerians
Ask not what your country can do for you
Ask what you can do
For your country.
God bless Nigeria!

This was at a time working with NIPOST was a dream job. While he realised it was a fantastic opportunity, he was extremely passionate about litigation and thus turned down the offer, and opted to pursue a career as a lawyer.

According to him: “I had a different passion and that was being in the courtroom; I therefore had to go for my dream to find a job that would help my career. It took me a while before I could get a job and that meant I was jobless for several months after NYSC.”
The former Lagos governor urged the participants to follow their dreams and make things work for themselves.

He, however, noted the failing education system in country and thus lauded the YBLN’s initiative in training young entrepreneurs for positive change in the country.

He encouraged the young entrepreneurs to pursue their careers with a view to realising their potentials. “I am happy to see young people doing great things in their various areas of business. The better Nigeria, we hoped for begins with us”

The minister also spoke of the need for youths to develop a sense of identity, to mark themselves out from previous rigorous thinking, distinctive engagement and an insistence on doing the right thing.

In October, over 40 interdiction missions with over 80 per cent success were carried out.

I was convinced that the last economic team was bankrupting the economy and had no clue as to how to fix it.

“Second, PMB is the first president of Nigeria under a democracy to have seriously desired the job and struggled for it for over 12 years. To me therefore, he must have a few points to prove, and I was willing to bet on a man who purposefully wanted the job than otherwise.

“Third, I was convinced that it would be in the enlightened self-interest of the APC, once in power, to do their utmost to keep power by delivering on the economy unlike the PDP which had taken power for granted. I am still confident that PMB can deliver change (although as I had indicated in my article in January, I didn’t believe that any of the two parties could deliver on their manifesto) but he and his team now need to run at the speed of a 1000 km per hour."

Soludo added that the former President Goodluck Jonathan had the worst economic management team in history because he left Nigeria with an unprecedented rate of debt accumulation.

I think I would be pretty good because I am fit, I am quick, I can control the ball and I understand all of the play.

“So I think if I do a trial then they would say, ‘You know what, here is a contract for five years! You are 30 years old, here’s a five-year contract. Let’s just do it!’”

I told them that coach is not around and has not been paid for months.

“I told them we can only afford N200,000 and they banged the phone on me and I have not heard from them since. We can only appeal to them to release the old woman to us.”

Demie, who is a trader based in Bayelsa State, was however angered by the attitude of the Nigeria Football Federation towards unraveling the mystery behind the kidnap of his mother.

He said: “As we speak, no call from either the NFF or the Presidency to find out about the development and our brother (Samson) is in Gambia on national duty. All they did was to put it in the newspapers that the kidnappers should release our mother. It is sad and highly regrettable.

I sometimes gave him food and money but on July 1, 2015, I left my house at Ikorodu with some clothes which I intended to give him.

“When I saw him, I decided to also pray for him and after the prayers, I discovered he became calm. I took him to a medical centre where he was given treatment and he later slept. I could not take him directly to a psychiatric hospital because of lack of funds, so I took him home.”

He added that he later contacted the patient’s family members and they were able to identify him.

Enahoro, a pastor with the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, said John’s family after paying him a few visits, abandoned him, adding that he had been saddled with the burden of his upkeep.

The Punch Metro report however shows that John’s sister, Rita, said that the family did not abandon him, saying the family had financial challenges.

“Our parents are dead. I am married, but jobless and my sister, who could have assisted, is a widow. She is struggling with her business.”

She added that after getting the news that John had become calm after Enahoro prayed for him, the family rushed there and saw his health condition had improved.

She, however, said the family had not been able to do much because they did not have the funds. She called on the government and members of the public for assistance.

Follow @linda_ikeji on Instagram

He made the statements as a guest at the U.S National Democratic Institute (NDI) in the United States on Wednesday.

He attributed the blatant failure of Obasanjo's unconstitutional political ambitions to the resilience of the National Assembly at the time (between 2006 and 2007).

Jonathan said, “Of course, I was a governor at that time, but due to strong resistance from the National Assembly, the third term bid failed.”

According to Jonathan, Africa needs strong parliaments to checkmate sit-tight presidents who influence parliaments to consider amendment to the constitution that would extend their stay in office.

“Changing constitutions to eliminate term limits in order to favour incumbents is inconsistent with democratic principles and reduces confidence in democratic institutions.”

He however warned that repressive actions by some of these leaders is setting “a disturbing precedent for the region and continent.
