New Member Meeting mid-July

The date of the next orientation for new members will be announced here. Please check back soon or sign up (click links in right hand column) to get notification (and other 6BC News) by RSS or email.

To become a garden member, you must

participate in a work day (next one tba)
attend an orientation session
pay annual dues ($25)
sign up to work open hours (you can do this at orientation)

For current members:
You can sign up for open hours and pay dues during new member orientation. New keys will be distributed this year and you will not receive one unless you have renewed your membership.

2008 dues are $25. Some discounts are available for those who can't afford this amount.

Performers Writers Artists

Would you like to present your work at 6BC Garden?

6BC provides a beautiful outdoors space --for free-- to

musicians
dancers
filmmakers
playwrights
writers

and other artists who want to present their work to an art-hungry East Village audience.

It's a great opportunity to audience-test new work, or experiment with the possibilities of performance in a natural setting. (Our library porch provides a fine covered stage but there are many other lovely spots in the garden you could use.)

A few guidelines:

Music must be acoustic (we don't have power for amplification)
Natural lighting only (for the same reason)
we need to protect our plants and structures
the garden must stay open to the general public during your performance(that means short pieces that don't require intense audience concentration work best.)
most performances are scheduled during garden open hours (Sat and Sun afternoons, Wed eves)

Within those guidelines, though, we encourage you to let your creativity reign.

We are also pleased to consider temporary art installations that harmonize with the aesthetic and purpose of the garden and can be secured in our public space.

Spring Work Day May 18

Noon through the afternoon. Get the garden ready for summer and learn new skills.

Everyone welcome, we'll be doing many kinds of work, both gardening and general maintenance. Experienced garden members will be on hand to direct the projects.

It's a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and find out how the garden works.

Prospective new members must participate in a work day AND attend an orientation session.

Our garden is open to the public year-round whenever the gate is open. Scheduled open hours will begin again in May.

Trick or Treat- Open Hours

Stop by the garden Wed Oct 31, Halloween, 6-8pm. These are the last scheduled open hours of the year...and there may be a special treat for visitors.

Starting Nov 1, non-members will be welcome to visit whenever the gate is open; scheduled open hours will begin again in May.

Garden Celebrates Fall

An array of happy pumpkins greeted garden guests as 6BC celebrated Autumn Fest on Sun Oct 21.

Members, families and friends packed the garden on a gorgeous afternoon to share food and cider, explore the newly renovated shed and library (right) and enjoy performances by dancer Sabine Heubusch, musicians Tom Shaner and Cypress and friends, and poet Maggie Dubris, who read as part of the Vanishing Birds Project, a collaboration with artist Linda Byrne that was on display during the fest.

Kids got an early start on Halloween, testing out their pumpkin carving and face painting skills and producing some
wonderfully scary (and really cute) results. It was a fitting end to 6BC's 26th year as a community garden that serves the East Village by providing a place to enjoy plants-- and each other.

Vanishing Birds

On Oct 21, look carefully in the greenery around the garden arbor and you'll discover some unusual translucent "nests." Listen and you'll hear some lovely bird calls. Artist Linda Byrne wove the nests from plastic six-pack rings, a material that can kill birds that get trapped in it: "I am commenting on the over-use of non-biodegradable materials which have become life threatening objects for birds," she says, "Materials and imagery combine to comment on the degradation of our environment." The Vanishing Bird Project, on display at 6BC Garden during Autumn Fest, is a collaboration with writer Maggie Dubris, who melded recordings from the Cornell Bird Lab with her own poetry to create a soundtrack. Together, they remind us what we lose when we lose birds.
