6BC Botanical Garden presents poet, friend of the garden, and long-time East Village resident Pitts. He will share his poetry with us and will be joined by some musical friends. We will start at 5pm. Light refreshments will be served.

Hi, everyone,
As a reminder, the last orientation for the year will be held this coming Saturday, (not on Sunday, Mother's Day, as previously announced) at 11:30 a.m.

For those of you who were members last year, even if you have a key, we are asking you to stop by and pay your membership dues, do a workday, and sign up for your open hours.

For those of you who already have, a big THANK YOU!

For those of you who haven't, please stop by.

For those of you who no longer wish to be members, please drop your keys off in the donation box; we can reuse them at a later date.

Hello, gardeners and potential gardeners

Our first orientation for new folks and our first work day will be on Saturday, April 12. Orientation will start at 11:30 and the work day will begin as soon as orientation is done. Time to get your hands dirty! Please dress for mess!

Rain date: Sunday, April 13.

Subsequent orientation/work days will be--Saturday, April 26, with rain date on Sunday, April 27 and Sunday, May 11.

On Monday, Sept 23 at 6pm, we will have another super concert thanks to Ariana Hellerman and Meera Dugal

Arab-Flamenco music with Alfonso Cid, Arturo Martinez, Taoufiq Ben Amor, and Zafer Tawil

As members of the New Andalucia ensemble, Alfonso, Arturo and Taoufiq re-create and re-imagine the musical exchange that occurred when Arabs traversed the Gibraltar into Iberia in 711 A.D. with their own NYC twist. Born and raised in Seville and now living just a stone’s throw from the garden, vocalist and cajon player, Alfonso Cid, has a voice that will shake your being to its very core. Paired with guitar virtuoso Arturo Martinez, originally drawn to flamenco because of its Gypsy, Arab and Jewish influences, the duo can engulf you all on their own. To really put us all over the edge, they are joined by Tunisian vocalist, percussionist and oud player Taoufiq Ben Amor and violin/oud player Zafer Tawil. These two masters also play music that will bring you to your knees. Together, these four flow in and out of Spain and the Middle East and just to forewarn you- their music will shatter your heart at the very first note but give them a chance to rebuild it throughout the evening.

Los Colombian Roots will play on Monday, Sept 16 at 6pm

On Monday, Sept 16 at 6pm we will have another fab band!

Los Colombian Roots Vol. 1 is a collective of Colombian musicians that play traditional music from the Atlantic coast of Colombia. With three drums, two gaitas (flutes made of cacti), and one maraca, the band pays tribute to Colombia's indigenous, African, and European heritage as well as the present-day, Colombia-based musicians who have made it their missions to hand down deeply-rooted traditions to future generations. The union force of hard rhythms and sweet melodies combined with lyrics that constitute folk stories and a respect of nature represent Colombian music in its truest form.

Please come to a reading from All the Roads Are Open by Annemarie Schwarzenbach by Berlin-based translator Isabel Fargo Cole. Cole will introduce the work and have time for discussion.

About the book:

In 1939, two women traveled by car from Geneva through the Balkans and Turkey to Afghanistan. Annemarie Schwarzenbach was a writer from Zürich, an anti-Fascist, a lesbian, and a morphine addict fleeing from her inner torments and from Europe’s destructive political climate. Ella Maillart was a photographer, sportswoman and ethnologist from Geneva, planning to study the customs of the mysterious valley of Kafiristan. Upon their arrival in Kabul in late August 1939, news of the outbreak of World War II disrupted their plans and tested their friendship. Ella Maillart’s 1947 account of the journey, The Cruel Way, has long stood as a classic of travel literature. Annemarie Schwarzenbach’s literary and journalistic work was rediscovered in Europe in the 1980s and is now being translated into English for the first time. Her essays from the Afghanistan journey (All the Roads Are Open) were translated by Isabel Fargo Cole for Seagull Books in 2011.

Sunday, June 30, at 11:00 A.M. there will be a an orientation and work day.

New volunteers, if you want a key, come on down! You will hear the garden rules, pay dues ($25), and get a little dirty.

Soretta will be leading this work day. Here is what she says:

This will be the last orientation for some time, so please try to be here if you want your key.

Anyone who has already joined is more than welcome to participate in the workday after the orientation, which should start about 12 noon.

Heads up for old and current members: As of March 30th, there is a new lock on the garden gate. Your keys will not work in the new lock.

ALL members, new and old, will be expected to participate in an orientation, at least one or two workdays, and commit to keeping the garden open for two days during the season (April 1 - October 31st). The membership fee is $25.00, which will include a key to the new padlock.

Keys can only be obtained by participating in an orientation.

6BC garden is supported entirely by membership fees and donations, and volunteer labor. 6BC gets no money or labor from the city. The garden is entirely maintained by volunteers. If you think 6bc is a special place, then please show your support by helping to keep it special.

Poetry Reading -- May 12

Poets Barbara Henning, Kimberly Lyons, and Tony Iantosca read in the garden. Reading will start at 3pm. And we will probably have some refreshments afterwards.

Barbara Henning is the author of seven collections of poetry and three novels. Her most recent books are a collection of poetry and prose, Cities & Memory (Chax), a novel, Thirty Miles from Rosebud, and a chapbook, A Slow Process (Monkey Puzzle). A Swift Passage is forthcoming this year from Quale Press. She is also the author/editor of a book of interviews, Looking Up Harryette Mullen (Belladonna). Barbara grew up in Detroit and has lived in New York City since 1983, except for a few years in Tucson. She teaches for Long Island University in Brooklyn, as well as for Naropa University.

Kimberly Lyons is the author most recently of these books of poetry: Rouge (Instance Press, 2012), The Practice of Residue (Subpress, 2012) and Asterik 11, a set of poems in broadside form (Few + Further Press, 2012). Her essay on the work of poet Joe Ceravalo is currently online at Jacket 2 in a feature on Joe Ceravalo edited by Vincent Katz. She lived on Avenue A and 11th street for 13 years and now lives in Brooklyn where she works at the Brooklyn Women's Shelter and publishes Lunar Chandelier Press.

Tony Iantosca is a poet living in Brooklyn, New York. His poetry has appeared or is forthcoming in the following journals and little magazines: Talisman, Death and Life of Great American Cities, Lungfull!, Barnstorm, Poems by Sunday, Brooklyn Paramount, By the Overpass, and Poets for Living Waters. His first chapbook, Team Burnout, is forthcoming from Overpass Books in the summer of 2013. He currently teaches English composition at Long Island University.

Turli Tava will play a free concert on Tuesday, October 2 at 6pm.

The new world music group, Turli Tava hails from the streets of New York City. With its unique blend of textures, colors, cultures and sounds, it brings forth a fresh take on traditional Balkan tunes, as well as inspiring originals by the group's members. Flamenco guitarist Dan Nadel and Jazz bassist Daniel Ori grew up in Israel, Classical clarinetist Vasko Dukovski is originally from Macedonia, and master percussionist Brahim Fribgane is from Morocco. The four, all prominent instrumentalists, crossed paths in Astoria, the world's most multicultural neighborhood. Turli Tava blends enchanting Macedonian and Mediterranean melodies in a dynamic improvisational atmosphere, maintaining the the explosive danceable rhythms and energy of the Balkan music. The band's name has its origins in the Turkish words turli (=mixed) and tava (=pottery dish.) The quartet will be recording its debut album in late 2012.

Monday, September 24 at 6pm

Gotham Bassoon Ensemble:
Featuring Gili Sharett, Gilbert Dejean, Don McGeen and Atsuko Sato, the Gotham Bassoon Ensemble is an all-bassoon quartet. The musicians are all orchestral bassoon players and recording artists who play on Broadway, the American Symphony, NY City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and more, and who love getting together to play chamber music together. There will be some baroque, some classical, some opera and some jazz tunes. Music by Vivaldi, Verdi, The Beatles, +, all arranged for bassoons.

When have you seen four bassoons in one place? When have you heard four bassoons all playing together? This will be fly.

And there may even be cupcakes!!!!
