Thanks to John and John and Christina for putting all the garden furniture away. We are well braced for the storm!

Sadly, John Molloy has had to postpone his marriage, which was scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

Gearing Up

The garden is looking amazing. So, stop by.

If you take a look at our calendar on this site, you will be misled. We are using a new calendar this season, and I'm trying to figure out how we can link to it from this site. All this said, know that we are open.... most evenings from 6 till 8 and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4pm. Come on by!

New Members Orientation will run from 12-1pm. (Please be on time).

This event will be followed by a workday, 1-3pm. You must attend both the orientation and the workday to become a member and obtain a key.

Weather is supposed to be nice--a high of only 80 degrees! So, come on down.

This will be the last orientation of the season. If you can not make this day, you will have to wait for next season which begins in April. Thank you all and sorry for changing last date.

Birthday/Children's Parties for Members Only

Only 6BC MEMBERS can schedule birthday, children's and other informal private parties in 6BC Garden. The garden is available, for a fee, for some kinds of private parties, but these much be arranged well in advance; see our parties page for details.

If you are not a 6BC member, please do not email asking for permission to hold a small private party such as a birthday party. Permission will not be granted; we are a tiny all-volunteer organization and can't respond to the volume of such requests. (If you ARE a member, be sure to get prior approval for any event with more than five people that you want to hold in the garden.) Thanks for your understanding.

In case of rain, the concert will be held at a nearby indoor location. All registrants will be notified by e-mail if our rain location will be used.
The Yale Alumni Association of Metropolitan New York (YAAMNY), in collaboration with the 6BC Botanical Garden, presents an afternoon out of doors concert by violinist Jae-Won Bang of the Yale School of Music on Sunday, November 1, 2009 from 3 to 4 p.m. at the 6BC Botanical Garden, on sixth street between Avenues B and C. This concert will continue rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, Jae-Won will perform at the black box theater not far from 6BC at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts’ Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program, at 113-A 2nd Avenue, between 6th and 7th Streets. All registrants will be notified by e-mail if our rain location will be used.

Korean-Canadian violinist Jae-Won Bang has been playing the violin since the age of five. At age thirteen, she made her orchestral debut performing Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto with the White Rock Festival Orchestra in Canada. She has participated in numerous festivals and workshops such as the Domaine Forget Chamber Music Session and the Morningside Music Bridge in Canada , Mozarteum Summer Academy in Salzburg , the Encore School for Strings in Ohio, Sarasota Music Festival in Florida, Kneisel Hall Festival in Maine and the New York Strings Orchestra Seminar at Carnegie Hall. As a chamber musician she has collaborated with renowned musicians such as Martin Chalifour, Steven Dann, Jean-Michel Fonteneau, Amiram Ganz, Ronald Leonard and Arnold Steinhardt and has also actively participated in the Maestro Foundation's Chamber Music Academy for several seasons.

Recent engagements include performances with the Long Beach Festival Orchestra as the grand prize winner of the Long Beach Mozart Festival, serving as the associate concermaster of the Debut YMF Orchestra and representing the Yale School of Music at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC in the Millennium Stage's "Conservatory Project" series. Her previous teachers include Toni and Gerald Stanick and in 2008, she obtained her Bachelor of Music degree at the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles, CA under the tutelage of Robert Lipsett. Jae-Won is currently pursuing her Master of Music degree at the Yale School of Music with Ani Kavafian.

Qi Cao will present a series of pieces on aspects of love from friendship to patriotism to amorous encounters to spiritual love scored by the greatest composers of musical history. Qi Cao is a second year master's student at the Yale School of Music, studying with Hyo Kang. She was the winner of the senior violin category and the overall grand prize winner in CT- American Strings Teaching Association Music Competition and the first prize winner of the artist category in the National Piano and Violin Competition in Singapore. In the Gisborne music Competition in New Zealand, she was awarded a special prize, "International String Player Award". In July 2007, at the Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra Summer Institute in Washington D.C, she won the Concerto Competition and performed Paganini's Violin Concerto No.1 with the SMI Orchestra at the Kennedy Center.

Miss Cao has been the recipient of numerous scholarships and fellowships including the Round Top International Summer Music Festival, Italy Lyrics Academy, Toronto Music Academy, Pacific Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, the Australia Summer Orchestra Institute, the National D.C Kennedy Centre/NSO Summer Institute, the Cleveland Encore Strings Summer Institute and Chautauqua Music Festival. She was chosen as an exchange student to the Peabody Institute, John Hopkins University in the U.S and awarded the Dean's List. Miss Cao has been awarded the Student Achievement Award for Arts and Culture, Artist Development Award by the National University of Singapore and she has also made the Dean's List four times and graduated with first class honors.

Miss Cao is a very active soloist, chamber and orchestra player, and teacher who has been performing and teaching extensively in the United States, Australia, Japan, China and Singapore. She was chosen as a freelancer of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Singapore Festival Orchestra.

Solar Power Tour/Workshop Sat Oct 3

Workshop 4-5pm
There is a suggested $10 donation which will be used to support the garden's solar power system.

City Solar founder Tracy Fitz was the original designer of the renewable alternative energy system that powers 6BC's koi pond waterfall and the lights and outlets in the garden toolshed and library. more about 6BC's solar power system

The Oct 3 events are part of the American Solar Energy Society's Annual National Solar Tour.
