Tropical Cyclones

Did you know that hurricanes, typhoons, tropical depressions and tropical storms are just different names for tropical cyclones? They mainly happen in tropical places when humidity rises causing low pressure and the air around that circulates at immense speeds…and they blow down everything it their path! Cyclones are graded on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the strongest). Hurricanes are always named after the first person to discover them.

Ice Storms

Ice storms happen when the ground is freezing and the air above it is warmer, then, when rain lands on it the water freezes instantly. Ice storms weigh down trees, bridges, electricity cables, and even buildings. From 1982 to 1994, ice storms were more common than blizzards in the USA and averaged 16 per year. How scary is that?!

Sand Storms

Sand storms or ‘dust storms’ start with a strong gust of wind over a sandy or dusty land. Once a load of sand gets blown across the ground, it builds up an electric charge helping all the dust it passes over to get blown away into enormous walls of sand…just like in Mission Impossible 4!

Hailstorms

Hailstorms are among the more common of all these storms, but on the rare ocasion, hailstorms can pour hail stones the size of softballs at the ground…when they do, it’s time to take cover! These huge hail stones usualy fall on the onset of a tornado as hail forms in colder clouds. Speaking of tornadoes…

Tornadoes

These giant vortexes, like water going down a plug-hole, spin clockwise in the northof the equator and anti-clockwise south of the equator. Some twisters can streatch up to a mile wide! They are more common closer to the equator.

Firestorms

Firestorms happen when natural heat causes a fire and heats it up until it creates its own burning hot wind. They are mighty powerful…this is probably why DC Comics came up with their Firestorm Super Hero!

Snow Storm

There nothing like a surprise over night snowstorm with which you can wake up to a snowy-white christmas wonderland! Did you know that light cannot travel through snow because of the complex structure of the snowflaces?

Blizzards

Blizzards are snow storms with wind storms in very cold temperatures. They can cause white-outs and can last up to 24 hours! I guess that’s why the biggest city blizzard ever recorded left 62 inches of snow grounded in a single day (Alaska, 1953)!

Lightning Storm

The most dramatically random and unpredictable storm is one of lightning. Did you know that the odds of becoming a lightning victim in the U.S. in any one year is 1 in 700,000. The odds of being struck in your lifetime is 1 in 3,000.

Microchip IDs are implanted under your pet’s skin with a needle by a veterinarian. The microchip contains a signal that can be read by a scanner. 3. Glee “Silly Love Songs” (2011)

Love it or hate it, this Glee episode offers some great love songs, and the Valentine’s Day spirit is felt throughout the whole show. Puck (Mark Salling) confesses his love to the new Glee member, and Finn (Cory Monteith) and Quinn (Dianna Argon)’s kiss at the kissing booth helps rekindle the feelings they have for each other. The lovey dovey episode ends with a cast-wide performance of Katy Perry’s “Firework.”

4. Friends “The One With the Candy Hearts” (1995)

When Chandler (Matthew Perry) goes on a double-Valentine’s Day date with Ross (David Schwimmer), he accidentally gets set up with ex-girlfriend Janice (Maggie Wheeler). Back at the apartment, Monica (Courtney Cox), Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) throw a Valentine’s day bonfire that ends up with a hilarious visit from the fire department.

5. The Jefferson’s “I Buy The Songs” (1981)

George Jefferson (Sherman Hemsley) knows that he is not the best with romantic gifts for Valentine’s Day for his wife, especially compared to his neighbor. So when he forgets all about a gift, he decides to write her a romantic song.

6. 30 Rock- “St. Valentine’s Day” (2009)

Leave it to 30 Rock to give us a Valentine’s Day episode that only they could pull off. Liz (Tina Fey) plans a date with her neighbor Dr. Drew (John Hamm). The only problem is, she accidentally schedules it on Valentine’s Day. After a disastrous first date at her house that includes him seeing her on the toilet, they end the night at the hospital and secrets about his family are revealed.

7. Boy Meets World, “First Girlfriends Club” (1998)

On this favorite Boy Meets World episode, Shawn (Rider Strong) receives flowers with a note to meet his Valentine’s Day date in a boathouse. When he arrives, he finds out he was set up by his ex-girlfriends who kidnap him to teach him a lesson. Meanwhile, Topanga (Danielle Fishel) finds out on V-day that Cory (Ben Savage) kissed another girl…oh no!

8. Full House “Joey’s Funny Valentine” (1994)

In this Valentine’s Day themed episode, Joey (Dave Coulier) starts dating a stand-up comedian that he brings to the house to meet the whole family. The relationship lasts up until she decides to make fun of his friends during her comedy club act.

9. Grey’s Anatomy “Valentine’s Day Massacre” (2010)

It’s Valentine’s Day at the hospital and a roof collapsed at a popular V-Day restaurant leading to many traumas. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Alex (Justin Chambers) question the suspicious event and try to find out more information. Miranda (Chandra Wilson) admits her feelings for the “gas man.” Meanwhile, Mark (Eric Dane)’s daughter shows up at the hospital, and has to figure out if she’s giving up her baby for adoption or not.

While there is no modern tech dedicated to just these applications, there are devices that can do each of these major tasks. Tablet computers are capable of analysis and data recording and with add-on hardware they can scan their environment as well. Plus, tablets can measure millions of other things that they hadn’t even dreamed of on Star Trek.

Phasers

The taser is the modern day phaser. Similar to the fictional weapon, the taser disables enemies through delivering directed energy. Other military weapons being developed use lasers and other forms of concentrated energy to subdue enemies.  A release of energy is also the result of the nuclear weapons that have become a hot-topic in the world.

Voice Control

Apple’s Siri may sound less robotic than the computer on Star Trek, but the fact remains that Star Trek did it first. Kirk could ask the computer to search its database and give him answers and it would soon oblige. The computer was seemingly limited to the ship’s databases, however, so one could assume that Siri is more powerful, having the entire internet at her disposal.

There is still a lot of tech that we want to see in our lifetimes. Transporters are at the top of the list, but actual starships would be incredible. As Gene Rodenberry demonstrated, the human mind is only limited by the imagination.

Star Wars Kid

A short time ago in a country fairly close by, a Canadian student decided to record himself performing his most awesome lightsaber moves. Big mistake. After finding the footage, his friends uploaded it and Star Wars Kid was born. The video was edited countless times to include special effects and music. It has been parodied on shows like Arrested Development and The Colbert Report and will go down as one of the first viral videos in internet history.

Numa Numa

Hot on the heels of Star Wars Kid came Numa Numa. These days, people record themselves with the intention of being seen by everyone, but what makes these videos so great is how personal they are and how damaging they were to those who created them. Unlike Star Wars Kid, however, Numa Numa took his newfound popularity in stride, making this video especially awesome.

Ms. South Carolina in Miss Teen USA 2007

We personally believe that, uh, some people out there in our nation found this video hilarious. The video was probably also popular in other nations such as The Iraq, such as. It went viral in 2007 and we’re guessing Ms. Carolina still hasn’t lived down her embarrassing response.

Evolution of Dance

Perhaps the one deserving video on this list, Evolution of Dance is pure awesome. Everyone who sees the video is entertained and the performer, Judson Laipply, is extremely talented. Unlike most other viral videos, this guy deserves to be seen and recognized for his original and outstanding performance.

Chocolate Rain

Nobody really knew what to make of this video when it first came out, so they listened to it again and again and again. Within a few days, the video was seen by millions and singer Tay Zonday became an overnight… uh, success? Parodied numerous times and with more than 85 million hits, this video is a true viral classic.

Charlie Bit Me

Endeared for its cuteness, Charlie Bit Me delivered a whole mess of human emotion in a one minute span.  From happiness to sadness, to anger to happiness again – it’s a perfect display of the pettiness of human emotion. CBM has earned its spot at the top of YouTube’s most viewed list, and is one of the most popular non-music videos to date.

Gangnam Style

The internet feeds on the bizarre and Gangnam Style serves it up in heaps. Aside from piling up more than half a million views, the song became a huge hit and a new dance craze was born. The Korean artist PSY became an overnight success, but very few actually know what he’s singing about. PSY is bringing to light the excess (fake) wealth flaunting of the middle class in the Gangnam District of Korea. Somehow we think that the people in Gangnam will only be encourage by this craze, however.

Honestly, as this problem becomes more and more widespread, the use of apps that offer free video messaging could skyrocket because it’s much more difficult to grossly misinterpret someone talking! Below, I gathered 9 of the most embarrassing text messages I could find to show you how big this problem really can be:

1. Texting the Wrong Person

This conversation that was submitted to Gawker is a classic example of what can go wrong even if all your words come out the way you intended.  Essentially, do yourself a favor and check who you’re talking to before pressing send!  Even if you didn’t have a shot with this girl, she probably has friends who won’ even look at you after this debacle.

2. Telling Your Best Friend She Looks Like a Farm Animal

This one, and many of the rest come from the kingpins of the embarrassing text message world at DamnYouAutocorrect.com.  We all know that the built-in dictionaries on our phones don’t have many of the words we use while texting.  This can cause problems because their suggestions can drastically distort what the sender meant to say.  Drastically, as in the exact opposite of what Ashley meant to say above!

3. Misunderstanding Word With Dual Meanings

This one comes from our buddies over at SmartphOWNED.com.  As you can see, Coke can mean one of two things in this context.  I’m not sure why the Dad was so cool with the situation when he thought Darla was referring to Cocaine, but that’s for him to decide.  Not freaking out his daughter is what’s important! Still, if I was the daughter, I would’ve taken the $60 and pretended to be doing drugs if he honestly didn’t care…

4. Accidentally Wishing Someone’s Grandmother Dead

This one is an odd combination of hilarious and sad at the same time.  The sender blames it on auto-correct, but this was just a good, old-fashioned typo.  How do I know? Because auto-correct is only supposed to correct things that aren’t words.  “Does” is a word, but the “i” is right next to the “o” on the keyboard, so it is really easy to accidentally press “o”.  The lesson, as always: review carefully before sending!

5. Talk About Llamas and HIV Instead of Saying “Hi”

Finally, a true victim of the dreaded auto-correct.  Granted, there must’ve been a typo as well that lead it to think that “Hook llamas” was what the writer was after, but damn is this funny!  What did I learn from this? Auto-correct is sensitive to capital letters, so I should never try to say hello to someone too excitedly! :-)

6. Letting Baguettes Kill the Mood

On one hand, this one was fairly innocent, but I’d be too busy laughing to get back in the mood for a while.  On second thought, maybe the guy has a thing for baked goods.  If so, he caught himself a cooperative one! :-)

You can even set trigger words that, when spoken, will automatically snap a photo for you. “Cheese” is one of those trigger words, making group shots a breeze.

Samsung Galaxy S III

The Galaxy S III is undoubtedly one of the best smartphones, but the camera isn’t too shabby either. The device features an 8-megapixel camera and is loaded with a ton of awesome sharing features. ShareShot will automatically send photos you take to nearby friends as you take them, instead of having to email them later (which you know never happens once you’re out of the moment). Buddy Photo Share will automatically email photos to friends when you tag them on the phone.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx HD

The Razr Maxx HD also features an 8-MP sensor and combined with a Snapdragon S4 processor, images can be snapped in under a second. Shooting modes are numerous, with HDR, multi-shot, panorama and timer all built-in. Five filter effects are included as well, for those of us who have never heard of Instagram.

• The fine art of ruining other people’s photos, usually by running in the background or making a silly face in the background.

Photobombing has become a great sport of sorts since it became more socially acceptable with the rise of digital photography.  Still, this is by no means a new phenomenon, just a phenomenon with a fun, new name.  Don’t believe me? Check out this YouTube clip (which may or may not be factually named, but I haven’t found any earlier instances of photobombing to contradict it):

Luckily, today it’s certainly easier to undo the damage that a photobomber does to your precious memories.  Simply download one of the man photo apps for iPhone or PC and edit that sucker out!  I’m sure the soldiers above would have LOVED that technology.  Anyway, people have been coming up with some fun ways to photobomb lately, so here are the 6 best examples I could find:

1. The Reddit Stingray

This picture was taken in 2007, but did not go viral until 2012 when it was posted on Reddit.  Even Mashable got in on the action, photoshopping stringrays onto great historical moments for comedic effect.  There’s just something about stingrays scaring the pants off of tourists that makes you laugh every time!

2. Animals Can Photobomb Too

Photobombing is not just for humans.  Rather, animals are frequent violators of the unspoken photo ethics due to their apathy towards human rules and guidelines.  This cat is thinking, “I don’t care about your picture; something is pissing me off, and you’re gonna hear about it!”  What makes this picture interesting is that you could make a case that the picture is about the cat, and the woman in the background is the photobomber.  Her face is quite priceless too.

3. Photobombed by the Stars

A few notes on this one: Sporting events are normally a breeding ground for photobombing opportunities, as there are tons of people packed into a small space.  Getting photobombed by fellow fans at sporting events is thus not uncommon.  Getting photobombed by professional athletes?  Much more uncommon, especially since most pictures are being taken of the athletes anyway!  Additionally, people are normally upset when they see their photobombed pictures.  These girls were probably thrilled by theirs.  Congrats girls!

4. Green Man Everywhere You Look

Perhaps inspired by Charlie Day’s “Green Man” character in the popular FX show “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, people wearing green spandex jumpsuits have been popping up everywhere.  This apparently includes at professional golf tournaments!  Personally, I’ve seen them in numerous other places off-camera, so I’m not sure these people are photobombers as much as general attention-seekers.  Either way, I’m sure Tiger wasn’t anticipating something behind him stealing his picture.

5. Photobombing With a Photo Of Yourself

Now, THIS is innovation.  Usually, people just photobomb using their own bodies.  It’s pretty hardcore to photobomb with a photo of your own face!  Honestly, I’m changing my name to Jack Blankenship, because this guy wins life.  Oh, he also has great timing, because he started doing this at Knicks games right around when “Linsanity” took off last year!

6. Photobombing a Photobomber

Another A for effort goes to this guy!  This girl was essentially trying to superimpose herself on the Leaning Tower of Pisa (a type of photobombing), but she wound up getting photobombed herself!  This guy is seriously smart for thinking of this and getting his friend to take a picture of it to boot.  He even got a high five from a hottie, so wins all around.

The First Camera

Niépce’s technique was good, but inefficient – development took eight hours. Louis Daguerre worked on a better and easier way to take pictures and in 1837, he came up with the daguerreotype. The daguerreotype allowed for image capture based on silver and chalk mixture that changed when exposed to light. Using a long exposure lasting several minutes, Daguerre photographed the first ever photo of a person.

Other processes used included the cyanotype and wet plate collocation until George Eastman invented film technology to replace photographic plates. Photographs were still only monochrome for some time until the invention of color photography.

Like monochromatic photography, color photography of the 1860s initially required very long exposure times, often ranging from hours to days. More advanced technologies often had distorted color levels and it was not until Hermann Vogel improved color sensitivities and reduced exposure times in 1873 that color photography became commercially viable.

Autochrome, invented by the Lumière brothers in 1907, was the first commercially successful color photography process. It was followed by the very popular Kodakchrome.

Digital Photography

1981 was the beginning of the end for film as the mainstream choice with Sony’s release of the Mavica.  Later, Kodak’s DCS 100 was the first commercially available DSLR. And the rest is history. Today it’s uncommon to find anyone who still uses film cameras and digital has made personal photography even more mainstream. Everyone and their mother has a camera. Photo apps for iPhone like Instagram have even brought back classic film and photograph styles demonstrating that there will always be a special place for film in our hearts.
