Terry Brock stated that “many new apps have demonstrated that information is gathered through means other than through top-down methods: our relationships and social networks are where many of us our now gathering our information” (Dirt, 2011).

This statement represents the growing trend of community slowly molding its space within traditional “news” and Journalism. We all see ourselves as informed and autonomous consumers, who have educated themselves within the realm of social media. This new wave of community sharing has in many ways ‘sabotaged’ the food chain within which the consumer is at the bottom and the Government, Journalists and large enterprises are at the top.

Twitter is one of the biggest success stories in social networking and the tech industry in general over the last five years. Since its 2006 debut, the microblogging powerhouse has converted from a small audience of early adopters to playing a major role as the pulse of the planet, the go to destination for breaking news as it happens, or a shared social experience around entertainment events, calamities and public interest. But even as millions and millions more have signed up for accounts, even its most supportive users see a gulf between the site and its potential - exacerbated by a continued problem with signal to noise. On Friday, well-respected blogger John Battelle explained his position, saying the site has incredible potential, but that it becomes impossible to get value from the stream. Many observers have commented on how noisy Twitter is: That once you follow more than about fifty or so folks, your feed becomes unmanageable. If you follow hundreds, like I do, it's simply impossible to extract value from your stream in any structured or consistent fashion.

As you know, even if you are extremely selective about the people and brands you engage with on Twitter, they are not always on topic or engaged in discussions that match your interests. Battelle asks for Twitter to "present that stream in a way that adds value to my life," recognizing the challenge that "It requires some Really F*ing Hard Math, crossed with some Really Really Hard Semantic Search, mixed with more Super Ridiculous Difficult Math."

Battelle suggests one approach is for Twitter to assign a rank or context to every tweet and how it relates to other tweets and accounts, which then links to advertising. If the noise is solved, then the company's path to revenue becomes clear.

Facebook Highlights Exponential Social Sharing Increase

This morning, during a highly anticipated event the company billed as "Awesome", Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company is moving beyond counting the number of active users as their main metric for tracking, but instead, they are paying more attention to the number of items shared per user and the number of places users can share on the site. Zuckerberg said the 750 million-plus users are sharing more than four billion items per day, and that this rate is increasing exponentially.

At my6sense, we've seen this trend and predict that it will only increase. Zuckerberg and his team believe that content share from our social connections will continue to increase, especially on mobile devices. We of course agree. my6sense and Facebook: Back in Action on the NOOKColor

my6sense 1.2 in the NOOKColor App Market: Go Get It!

At the end of April, we introduced my6sense for the fast-selling and innovative Barnes and Noble NOOKColor, becoming the only application that lets you read and share to Twitter, Google Buzz and Facebook on the device, which some are calling an inexpensive Android tablet disguised as an e-reader. Feedback was very good, as noted by a great writeup by AndroidGuys.com.

But there was a catch. A bug.

It turned out that somewhere between our testing environment and the real-world production environment of the NOOKColor app store, the application communicated to Facebook in a different way. It simply didn't work, much to our chagrin and to the frustration of the thousands of people downloading the app. After much discussion with Barnes and Noble, and learning more about how the device operates, we made the decision to rebuild our Facebook OAuth strategy from scratch - something that took time, but has fixed this once and for all, and should help us in future updates for our app on other platforms, including Android and iOS.

So let us tell you - and you help tell the world - my6sense is back in action on Facebook on the NOOKColor. So if you downloaded the app, go to your Apps library on the NookColor and hit the refresh button. You can also go to the NOOKColor apps gallery in their shop and download the new my6sense 1.2.

When you download the new my6sense app, click the Facebook icon from the front of the app, or reconnect in our settings. Then you can see the best of all those things your friends are sharing on Facebook in real time, just like we always hoped you would. You can jump in the stream and like and comment on Facebook, just as if you were on Facebook.com.

my6sense Use, Subscribers, Downloads Grow Dramatically

Over the last six weeks, thanks to considerable partner momentum, word of mouth, positive feedback to our applications and the highlighting of my6sense in the Android Market as a featured application, growth for us as a company has been dramatic - eclipsing all previous growth since our launch of our first application in 2009, just in the last six weeks alone.

Since the first week of April:

my6sense subscriber growth expanded 143%
total my6sense downloads expanded 164%
total downloads on Android grew by 680%!

The chart below shows where we are as a service compared to just six weeks ago:

With April 8 2011 data as 100%, you can see the dramatic growth.

Of course, it's one thing to download the application, or even sign up for an account, let alone use it. But usage of our application has been amazing on all fronts, especially when you combine our iPhone and Android applications with the new NOOKColor application for Barnes and Noble as well as our Twitter extension for Chrome. In total messages consumed by users on my6sense, consumption is up more than 600% from last month.

To put this in perspective, this means that we are crunching tens of millions of messages per day, and delivering millions of messages to hundreds of thousands of daily sessions for thousands of users every single calendar day.

We knew my6sense was addictive when we started to work on our application and deliver on the promise of a world where the best content would flow to you automatically. Now, we know the average active user uses my6sense six times per day. You don't even eat that many meals per day, so we must be doing something right.

The growth and demand on our systems around the clock has led to some bumpiness as we scale, so we do appreciate your patience when we try and keep up with our growing databases - through the late nights and odd weekend hours. We hope to continue this challenge upward and onward, so tell all your friends there is an addictive app out there that's getting more and more users like crazy. Tell them about my6sense.

What The World Is Sharing on my6sense (via 6sen.se)

Ever since we introduced the new 6sen.se URL shortener for shares through our application on Android and iOS, it has been great to see so many people engaging with our service and sharing the best from their social and news streams to social networks, especially Twitter, which makes it easy to find what they find the best of the best.

Every day, millions of messages are processed on my6sense around the world. Dozens of articles are shared every hour to Twitter, and they could quite possibly replace top news aggregators in terms of finding what you, the users, find most interesting and relevant from the world around you. In a quick glance through Twitter's archives over the last few days, we can find shares on all manner of technology trends, global and national politics, sports, advice and all manner of hobbies.

How To Add New Content to my6sense

One of the best things my6sense users find is that our service is able to find the best content just for them from a wide variety of sources - from RSS feeds to Twitter, Facebook and Google Buzz. Unlike other aggregation services, which can get increasingly noisy with the more information added, my6sense just gets better. With so many new users coming to my6sense (especially on Android) in the last few weeks, we wanted to highlight how you can bring new content to my6sense, and start having the best content float to the top.

Clicking the Streams Button Shows Your Subscriptions

On our Android application, used for this example, you can add new content by clicking on the "Streams" button. In this page, you can see all the sources you are subscribed to, and a + button at the top right. The + button is the key for you to add new sites - as many as you wish!

When you hit this + button, there are four ways you can add new content to my6sense, namely Topics, Social, Import and Website. Topics include bundled sources hand-picked by my6sense. When my6sense released our Android application last September, we knew we were onto something special. After starting on iPhone, we took our knowledge from that experience, added enhanced features, new networks, including Google Buzz support, expanded our sharing capabilities, and of course, continued to improve our digital intuition, to bring the best of your social and news to you - and just for you. The response from Android users has been great from day one. The app has been featured on video reviews, in podcasts and blogs. At the end of 2010, my6sense was named a top social app, a top news app and a top RSS reader. With such a versatile list, you know the app is going somewhere.

Starting Saturday, we got the great news that my6sense was selected by Google as a featured application in the Android Market. Among hundreds of thousands of great apps, my6sense had, like your best stuff, risen to the top and gained their attention, to be listed among a small handful of elite programs.

The Third Wave of the Web: Personalization of Streams

The world is eager to find out what the "next big thing on the Web" is going to be. If the first wave of the Web were all about transforming physical assets to the digital world, and the second wave has been about social connections - to friends, to places and to what we like, the third wave is all set to be about true personalization of your real-time streams, for you as an individual.

Louis Gray, my6sense's VP of Marketing, first introduced the Third Wave of the Web in November of 2010, saying the next wave would be uniquely personal. Following our post from two weeks ago, introducing the new 6sen.se URL shortener, the number one question we received was how soon this cool new feature was going to be available for our iPhone and iPod Touch users. While much of our recent development in the last six months has been focused on the Android and Web platforms, we continue to work hard on improving the iOS experience. Now, we're excited to introduce the addition of the 6sen.se URL shortener for iOS, and in that process, we've removed the long (and not exactly fantastic) tag to your tweets... the (via my6sense). Now you have more room for your message, and can continue sharing to your stream as you always have, bringing the best of the Web to your followers.
Sharing an item from my6sense for iPhone to Twitter
If you find a relevant item in your stream on my6sense for iPhone, click the share button in the top right corner of the message, and choose "Share on Twitter", just like you always have. You can see the preview of the message (as in the right picture), and are reminded how many characters you have to fit under the 140 limit. When done, hit "Send", and your tweet is on its way. It just might end up looking like the one below.

This update unifies the Twitter sharing capabilities between both Android and iOS. Now both platforms show the 6sen.se URL, and iPhone users no longer have to see the (via my6sense) notation on each tweet. Better yet, iPhone users still have one secret weapon the Android guys don't have - the StreamIt functionality! Without going through the above process, you can simply turn on the capability to Autoshare, and click the share button to the left of any item in your stream. Then the tweeting is done on your behalf.

my6sense In the News: Personalization Remains Hot

As our VP of Marketing Louis Gray wrote in November, the third wave of the web will be uniquely personal. As we grow beyond information publishing and social connections, the world is waking up to personalization and tailoring of streams to your interests in a big way. Popular tech Q&A site Quora had a disussion of this very thing in the last month... what comes next after search and social?

As the pioneer in this market, being part of this major trend means that yes, we will see lots of competition from all corners, and also incredible opportunity. Additionally, this means that my6sense is in the spotlight often.

Some interesting news of late to note:

* WebProNews, in a post by Rob Diana of Regular Geek, titled "Search, Personalization And Recommendation: The Future of Information Consumption" discussed new ways to approach our fast-moving information stream. In the post, Rob said, "When focusing on news, personalization like my6sense is probably the best option."

* TechCrunch, in a post by Mahendra Palsule, titled "The Age of Relevance", highlighted an elite group of companies focused on 'personalized serendipity', leveraging a combination of interest and social graphs. my6sense was of course highlighted.

* Mashable took the time to talk with Louis about my6sense and our efforts to "prioritize the social inbox and personalize the Web". One key quote: "Prioritization is not a feature." It's much more.

2. Click the "Menu" button on your Android device to bring up sharing options. Click "Share on Twitter".

2010: Digital Intuition Rises to the Top - A Year of Highlights

2010 has been an incredible year for us at my6sense, and our many users, who help us work to build the most intelligent products for finding the best out of your fast-growing and fast-moving social and news streams. With the year coming to a close, we thought we would start a new tradition here at my6sense headquarters - highlighting our top 6 successes of the year. We are all about the 6th sense, so buzzing in our digital intuition this year were some major milestones.

1) Intelligent personalization is recognized as the next wave of the Web.

As our new VP of Marketing, Louis Gray, wrote in November, the Web is evolving, from one first focused on information discovery to a social Web, and now, one that is becoming uniquely personal. In a world where we are bombarded with new pieces of content from news sources and our friends, we need to find smart tools to help us find the very best. GigaOM referred to the emergence of the hyper-personalized Web, while Garry Tan, Posterous CEO, said that content should be experienced by relevance and importance and interestingness, not chronologically.

What was once a crazy vision a few years ago about an intelligent future is now becoming reality - and my6sense is not the only one talking about it. Biz Stone, cofounder of Twitter said "Our challenge is relevance", while Google's Marissa Mayer outlined "contextual discovery" at LeWeb in Paris this month. The future is personal, and my6sense is delivering that intelligence.

2) Recognition from the tech press as the leader in personalized stream ranking.

TheNextWeb named my6sense one of the 10 best social mobile apps of 2010, and said its results "will amaze you". CNN said my6sense suggested the future. GigaOM called my6sense an intelligent disruptor to help manage the data deluge, and Robert Scoble said my6sense was "kicking Facebook’s ass on info filtering."

This is part of why ReadWriteWeb named my6sense one of the top 10 RSS and syndication technologies of 2010.

3) The launch of our Android application to many new my6sense users.

Our shiny green my6sense logo is a perfect fit for the shiny green Android mascot. We brought my6sense to Android in September and rapidly saw our user base spike. Bringing support for Google Reader, Facebook, Twitter and Google Buzz, the app has become very well liked from the community. Android Guys said: "My new favorite Twitter app is my6sense. It's also my new favorite Facebook app. And my new favorite Google Reader app, and my new favorite Google Buzz app."

TheNextWeb called it their favorite news reader, while Android-Apps.com called it sensational. Find it on the Android market here.

4) The introduction of my6sense's Attention API

We can't keep this digital intuition all to ourselves now, can we? At DEMO Spring this year, we introduced our Attention API, making digital intuition available to Web sites and clients looking to bring personalization and intelligence to their products. Now anyone can bring hyperpersonalized streams to their users! Watch for some great announcements in 2011 about how this is being used.

5) The launch of new my6sense powered apps from Ecademy and Cellcom

New social communities and news sites want my6sense personalization. First to step up were the social business network Ecademy and Israeli telecom Cellcom, both of whom can now offer personalized streams to their users.

6) Fantastic feedback from our many my6sense users

The key to my6sense is that the application learns from you. The same is true from our engineering team. We are always happy to get feedback from our users who offer new ideas and great feedback to help build the next generations of our product as we take on new challenges, new partners, new streams, new apps and new screens. With my6sense diving deep into your RSS and social streams to find you the best content just for you, we know that you too want to create amazing content, and you don't want to use two separate apps to consume, share and post.

Today we are happy to introduce version 1.4, which gets you adding to those streams!

You can post an update to Twitter, Facebook and Google Buzz, or any combination of services!

- Twitter updates are limited to 140 characters

Step by step, release by release, we hope to make your social and RSS dreams (streams) come true. This week’s my6sense Android App release (V 1.3) includes:

1. Better Buzz: Read full Buzz posts in your my6sense Buzz stream, and share content with full previews to Buzz

2. Twitter Tweaks: You can now send replies and direct messages from your Twitter stream

3. Set Sorting: ‘Remember my last sorting mode’. Per your requests, we adjusted the app so that when you sort a stream by time or relevance, that sorting becomes the default view for that particular stream. Notes: 1. Initial default sorting for all streams is relevance. 2. Applies to each stream individually

4. Improved Items: Bringing you a more dynamic stream view with regards to read and skipped items

5. Twelve hr Time filter: Added 12 hour time filter for relevant items (see ‘Menu’->’Settings’ in the app homescreen)

Intuition journey gets better with Android Update Version 1.1

We feel it in the emails, we feel from tweets and phones, love is all around us, and so the feeling grows.

First off, we’d like to say thank you.

Thank you BIG time to all of our users who have been sending us incredible feedback, great feature suggestions and warm support. It is a pleasure for us to serve up your intuition, and we’re glad to journey with you through this new age of the 6^th sense.

Android Update: Version 1.1

Second, Android Version 1.1 has just been released!

We’ve been working around the clock (seriously, 24/7) to make this app the best stream experience you’ll ever have, and although there are a few more issues to iron out and more features we’d like to add (aren’t there always?), the app is definitely on its way to ultimate intuition.

Here’s what the update includes:

Google Reader import fix: Those of you who experienced OPML error 123, please try importing again.

Reduced memory usage

Fixed display of Facebook comments/likes (only some versions encountered this problem).

Bug fixes

Next my6sense Android app version (1.2) will include the ability to move application data to SD card, the ability to ‘like’ Facebook/Buzz posts and more.

my6sense Extends Stream Personalization to Android

When I switched from iPhone to Android, there were few applications I missed. While some other switchers have lamented a number of high-profile games, for me there were only a few gaps - namely Cinchcast and my6sense. With Cinchcast reaching Android in June, my6sense was the lone holdout. And if you thought I would join a company whose products weren't available for me, you'd be nuts, so my6sense playing well with my HTC Evo was a clear inevitability. What wasn't inevitable about the app's reaching Android was the speed of its development, and its quality. As evidenced by the solid press coverage and user feedback at the conclusion of day one on Android, my6sense is filling an important role in the expanding Android market, cutting through information overload, while at the same time, unifying the different streams of Facebook, Twitter, RSS and Google Buzz.

If you were watching my Twitter stream today, or my shares from Google Reader, which hit both Buzz and FriendFeed, you could see that my6sense's entry on Android struck a chord with a good number of people who have been waiting for the application to graduate from the iTunes application store and hit more screens. Even as it was rolling out to Android, the calls are clear that users are begging for my6sense's personalization and prioritization functionality to debut in new places - on the Web, on iPad, and to support new sources, for example LinkedIn, Foursquare and YouTube. Being in the marketing role doesn't mean I hold too much sway over the company roadmap and I can't do a lick of code, but be sure we're listening. If it were up to me, the power of my6sense would be everywhere, sorting and prioritizing every stream and every Web page just for me - like an intelligent assistant who finds the best and disposes of the rest.

Like any new piece of software, there are bugs. I encountered quite a few during my own testing and saw many good rounds of updates in the weeks preceding the announcement. More were reported and being worked today. The service even went down on Tuesday morning following the initial launch as demand became overwhelming and new users flocked to the system. It's not ideal, but a situation many of us have seen, from small startups like Flipboard to larger pieces of our ecosystem, including Twitter.

Even if I am on the odd side of the bell curve in terms of how I consume content, I use my6sense to surface the most interesting items from any source and put them squarely in my view. I also use my6sense as a powerful sharing tool to add items of interest to streams like Twitter and Facebook. But it's always good to hear others see the value.

In addition to those great quotes, my6sense was covered by a good array of tech enthusiasts, including TechCrunch, Android And Me, VentureBeat, BetaNews, Mobiputing, Robot Briefs, Technologizer, and GigaOM. Of course, with great visibility comes great responsibility. Like with Flipboard, you can't claim victory on one day's good buzz. The success will be measured through customer satisfaction, use and expansion through partnerships that recognize real value.

Despite more than a decade's time in marketing roles for technology companies, I am not one who is keen on superlatives. I prefer to let the products speak for themselves. If you are an Android user who hasn't yet tried my6sense, it would be great to get your feedback. And if you use an iPhone or an iPod Touch, or even an iPad, my6sense is a solid contender to harness your streams and make them less of a mess and more personal. I'm spoiled because I know what my6sense can do, and I want it everywhere. I am excited to get the chance now to share it with the fast-growing Android community who needs more and more high quality apps. Add one more to the pile.
