7-Eleven® Chain Raises $40 Million in Global Campaign for Japan Disaster Relief

The 7-Eleven, Inc. global convenience retailing organization raised more than $40 million in donations to assist victims devastated by the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The international fund-raising efforts included canister contributions from 7-Eleven® customers, as well as donations from the National Coalition of Associations of 7-Eleven Franchisees, individual franchisees and company employees. Fresh-food and bakery suppliers also provided support.

During the months of March, April and May, customers of the retail chain, which has the most outlets in the world, dropped coins and bills in collection canisters located at approximately 36,000 participating stores around the world.

Dallas-based 7-Eleven, Inc. is owned by Seven-Eleven Japan in Tokyo, which operates and franchises more than 13,200 stores on the island nation.

“The Japanese people are resilient, and it is evident that our customers, franchisees, suppliers and employees really wanted to support them and assist in rebuilding their lives,” said 7-Eleven president and CEO Joe DePinto. “We hope these generous donations by thousands of global citizens and friends of 7-Eleven can help meet some of the basic needs as the Japanese people recover in the years to come.”

Funds collected will be directed to organizations that provide rescue and recovery, safety and rebuilding services in the three Japanese prefectures impacted the most – Miyagi, Fukushima and Iwate.

Now, the ingenious MixMaker dual-chambered cup and valve straw lets Slurpee-drinkers enjoy their favorite frozen beverage like they never have before. The refillable cup and straw combo, available only at 7-Eleven® stores, has a suggested retail price of $4.99 and includes the first two-sided Slurpee straw.

Not only is 7-Eleven encouraging flavor-mixing, they’re mixing up the Slurpee summer season with its MixMaker Summer Concert Series. The second in the series features Girl Talk, aka Gregg Gillis, who has acquired a cult following and raves from Rolling Stone and Wired magazines.

Gillis brings his unique musical talents to the Granada Theater in Dallas June 23. The Cool Kids will open the show. 7-Eleven, Inc. today announced that it has signed an agreement to operate six convenience-store locations in Virginia from Workman Oil Co. of Lynchburg.

The stores, located in Roanoke and Salem, will be re-branded as 7-Eleven operations starting next week. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

“Adding these appealing locations in Virginia complements our store-development strategy of acquiring retail sites where we currently operate stores,” said Dan Porter, 7-Eleven’s vice president of development. “It also enables us to provide consumers with high-quality, value-oriented fresh-food offerings and further leverage our regional daily-delivery distribution network.”

These six Apple Market convenience stores will remain open during remodeling, and stores will be equipped to sell 7-Eleven signature products, like fresh food and grill items, coffee, Slurpee® and Big Gulp® beverages. The locations will eventually be offered for franchise. In the interim, 7-Eleven has provided employment opportunities to current, qualified store personnel.

This brings the number of 7-Eleven stores operated and franchised in Virginia to just under 700 stores.

7-Eleven Flying High Convenience Retailer Lands its First Airport Store Inside Secured Area

Airline travelers at Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport will be able to grab some of their favorite products like Slurpee® drinks and specialty grill foods when 7-Eleven, Inc., the world’s largest convenience retailer, opens its first store inside an airport secured area. The 1,291-square-foot outlet is expected to be ready for business in 2013 as part of the airport’s Terminal Renewal and Improvement Program.

The Dallas-based retailer, along with its partners for this property, recently won the bid for a location near Gate 25 in Terminal A.

“Although we have 7-Eleven® stores on a few airport properties in North America, this will be our first located inside security and directly across from departure and arrival gates,” said Dan Porter, 7-Eleven’s development vice president.

“7-Eleven is all about convenience,” Porter said, “and our proprietary merchandising and logistics systems are prepared to serve the daily needs of both busy travelers and terminal employees. Dallas-Fort Worth is home town for us, so it makes sense that our first U.S. outlet of this type is at DFW Airport.”

Plans call for 7-Eleven’s iconic Slurpee®, Big Gulp® and Big Bite® brands with an emphasis on fresh foods and bakery items that are delivered daily to be part of the store’s product mix. Among other selections for hungry travelers will be hot foods, including pizza, potato wedges, and chicken tenders.

7-Eleven also boasts healthier offerings, such as several sizes of pre-made salads, fresh-cut fruit and vegetables, sandwiches and low-calorie beverages.

To provide travelers with value options, 7-Eleven will offer value-priced grocery, packaged snacks and bakery items under its 7-Select private brand. 7-Select is the company’s exclusive line of food and other products developed to compete on taste and quality with name brands, but at prices 10 to 20 percent less.

For travelers’ convenience, the 7-Eleven store will have refills that meet travel restrictions in addition to emergency, health and beauty items and popular magazines.
While this store won’t be operating 24 hours, the 7-Eleven will be available to serve late-night customers when flights are delayed.

Operating the store will be Dallas-based Ray Quintanilla, who will become a 7-Eleven franchisee under 7-Eleven, Inc.’s business conversion program, and LS Travel Retail North America, a subsidiary of the world’s largest magazine publisher and operator of nearly 4,000 “transit-oriented” stores worldwide. Quintanilla already owns a number of concessions at DFW Airport and has been serving customers there for 22 years.

7-Eleven Acquires Wilson Farms Expands Its Western New York Presence

7-Eleven, Inc. has signed an agreement to purchase Wilson Farms, a Buffalo-based convenience store chain with 188 outlets in New York state, with an expected closing in the second quarter. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The addition of Wilson Farms significantly increases 7-Eleven’s presence in the western New York area. Post closing, 7-Eleven will assume responsibility for all Wilson Farms locations and personnel from the WFI Group, which is led by Bruckmann, Rosser, Sherrill & Co., a private-equity firm, and the Nanula Family, which together have managed the stores since 2005.

“Wilson Farms has a successful store operation, quality locations and a strong customer-service culture,” said Stan Reynolds, 7-Eleven executive vice president and CFO. “The combination of the two companies will strengthen our convenience offering in the western New York area.”

As the global leader of convenience retailing, 7-Eleven continues to grow its business by adding stores through traditional store development, business conversions and acquisitions.

Sites from ExxonMobil, Inc. in Florida and Illinois, certain Shell sites in Dallas, Quarles Petroleum Inc., Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, Zooms, Inc., New England Pantry, and Little Sue are among the company’s most recent acquisitions.

Operation: Opportunity 7-Eleven Provides Stage for Hire Heroes USA Fundraising Campaign To Help Vets Return to Workforce

7-Eleven, Inc. and a coalition of its franchise owners have partnered with some of their top suppliers, all leading U.S. brands, to raise money for Hire Heroes USA (HHUSA). This nonprofit organization offers transition, job search and job placement assistance and services for returning veterans of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, particularly those who have been wounded or disabled during their military service. Customers can support the effort by purchasing specially marked products during April and May at participating 7-Eleven® stores. A portion from the sale of each item will be donated to HHUSA. Tags designating the donation amounts will be featured prominently throughout the store along with a special display of participating products. Among companies joining in the effort are Nestlé USA, Dr Pepper-Snapple Group, Tropicana Products Inc., Mars, Inc., MillerCoors, Kellogg’s and Kraft Foods, Inc. To encourage participation, many of the products are being offered at special prices during the two-month campaign. “None of us can do enough to thank the wonderful American men and women in uniform who have served, and who continue to so selflessly serve, to protect our liberty and freedom,” said 7-Eleven President and CEO Joe DePinto. “From my perspective, there is no higher calling. In many instances, these service members have paid the ultimate price or incurred wounds that will forever alter their lives. Hire Heroes USA is doing important work to ensure that when these veterans return home, they are able to find employment opportunities to support themselves and their families.” 7-Eleven has pledged to fill at least two field consultant positions with qualified vets where available, and company representatives will participate in military-base workshops to discuss employment and franchising opportunities. As a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, Hire Heroes USA’s mission is to offer transition support, job-search assistance and job-placement services to those who have honorably served in all branches of the US military – and to their spouses – to reduce veteran unemployment. HHUSA tries to match career interests, qualifications and transferable skills of veterans with the needs of hiring companies partnering with HHUSA. Veterans who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom and/or those who are wounded or disabled, receive priority. Services are provided at no cost to the veteran. “The transition back into civilian life can be challenging for service men and women, especially those wounded or disabled,” said HHUSA President Brian Stann. “Many young veterans find themselves behind in terms of employment experience and networking in the civilian sector. The services we offer help ease the transition into civilian life and ensure these men and women have the opportunity to enjoy the freedoms they fought to preserve.” The National Coalition of Associations of 7-Eleven Franchisees (NCASEF), an umbrella organization of 7-Eleven U.S. franchisee associations across the country, has pledged its support to HHUSA and will donate the proceeds from its annual golf tournament this July, expected to be as much as $100,000, to the veterans’ assistance organization. When the first Super Hero® movie of the year hits the big screen, you can be sure a 7-Eleven® fun-filled Slurpee promotion, with collectible cups, straws and a crazy-colored flavor, isn’t far behind … or in many cases, out in front of the U.S. premiere. This year, Slurpee heroes, inspired by Thor, a movie from Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures due to hit theaters May 6, 2011, is thundering into participating 7-Eleven stores in the U.S. and Canada for the month of April. The newest Marvel Studios movie tells the epic story of Thor, which spans across the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth. Produced by Kevin Feige, directed by Kenneth Branagh, from a screenplay by Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz and Don Payne and a story by J. Michael Straczynski and Mark Protosevich, the production is the first full-length feature film about the Norse god of thunder and long-time Marvel comic book Super Hero known for the power he wields with his hammer. The global chain of 7-Eleven® is raising funds in close to 39,000 store locations to assist organizations providing relief for the Japanese people devastated by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. The world’s largest convenience retailer has launched an in-store collection canister and fundraising campaign for its customers around the world to assist with Japan relief. Dallas-based 7-Eleven is owned by Seven-Eleven Japan in Tokyo, which operates and franchises more than 13,200 stores on the island nation. “This tragedy has been unfolding before our eyes, and people are looking to support the Japanese people in any way they can,” said Joe DePinto, 7-Eleven, Inc. president and CEO. “We want to connect with our customers around the world to assist Japan and its people in rebuilding their lives after such devastating disasters.” DePinto added, “Funds collected will go to organizations in Japan that provide rescue and recovery, safety and rebuilding services. 7-Eleven will make a company contribution as well.” 7-Eleven encouraged its franchisees, domestic and international licensees to join the campaign, and the request was met with resounding support.
