This month, preschoolers will be reminded that God loves them – no matter what. Think about that for just a minute. No matter what we’ve done or what we haven’t done, God loves us. Always. It’s an amazing and humbling realization. We will introduce this concept to preschoolers by teaching them that God loves them when they are sad, scared or happy. And, we’ll celebrate that love on the last Sunday of the month just like David celebrated that God loved him.

Our team will be praying for you to have moments filled with wonder as you give preschoolers a “first look” at the God who loves them, made them, and wants to be their friend forever.

Club Respect

Did you see it? What would’ve been recorded as a perfect game for pitcher Armando Galarraga had not umpire Jim Joyce made that bad call? How about Wimbledon’s longest match ever, between Nicolas Mahut and John Isner? Maybe even more impressive was what happened right after each of those competitions. How each of the four key players reacted. See any raised fists, hear any harsh words, notice any sour looks? Me, either. Instead, hands were shaken, words of congratulation (or remorse) were spoken, and faces expressed respect.

I, for one, am impressed with how each of those gentlemen responded to each other. Surely treating others with respect (regardless of their mistakes and foibles, regardless of whether we disagree with them, regardless of how we feel around them) is one of the hardest things God expects of us, in sports or everyday life.

And so, come September, 252 Basics will focus on the virtue of respect: showing others they are important by what you say and do. Here’s the rundown:

You respect God when you show respect for people in charge. Your respect for people is connected to your respect for God. This week will help kids discover how. (Romans 13:1-7).

You can show respect with your actions. Actions speak respect just as loudly (maybe even louder) than words. (1 Samuel 18; 19; 24).

You can show respect with your words. Words are powerful. Help kids discover what builds up and what tears down. (James 3:9-12).

Show respect to God because He’s in charge of everything. Above all and anyone else, we need to respect God. This week will help kids learn how. (Matthew 8:5-13).

Students and Adults share about their experience in the Bahamas...

“It was an amazing week in Eleuthera! The opportunity to be used by God in such a huge way is humbling. On a daily basis, we were shown that God was in control, as our plans were always changing. Everytime something would go “wrong” we would have to put our faith in God, and everytime, He would show up and make it all work out for His glory. What an awesome trip, what an awesome God!” – High School Senior

“The mission trip to Eleuthera was the perfect picture of God’s creation and God’s visible hand in all of our lives! It was a privilege for our team to be used in God’s plan for the people of Eleuthera. God used our team to provide men on the island with His vision of true discipleship…Christ’s model! Our team had the privilege of leading several people to Christ and continue building life long relationships. I truly believe that Christians are missing out on all the joys that God has to offer unless they are on mission (your own city or abroad) for HIM. Matthew 20:28 – “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Youth Leader

“To call it a life-changing trip wouldn’t even do it justice. It was so amazing to see God work in every single detail of the trip. He worked in the lives of our teammates, the youth on the island, and also in the lives of the older, faithful men on the island as well. It was so humbling to have even a little part of God’s work. And all we had to do was report for duty and let him work in and through us. This trip helped me grow so much in my walk with Christ also. God revealed to me that it shouldn’t take a mission trip for me to take a step back and look at my character and get rid of certain aspects of my life that shouldn’t belong. He showed me that I should wake up every morning and ask for him to reveal certain aspects of my life that could hinder his spirit working through me. And I had to repent of not doing that. All in all it was an amazing trip that lit a fire in me for the salvation of young teenagers that I pray will never fade. To God be the glory for every single thing that happened!” – High School Senior

“There is absolutely nothing like being on mission for God for seven whole days. Nothing else seems to make me feel as much joy. I am so thankful that God decided to use me in Eleuthera. However, during all the physical work that was done on the mission house, and all the conversations I was able to have with the youth of Eleuthera, the most prevalent change I found was in my heart. God showed up so much and it was a presence I pray I will never forget. After being there, I now more than ever don’t want to be ANYWHERE outside of God’s will, and I had to make changes in my life in order to pursue His path for my life. All I want to do with my life is live for God and I pray that I never lose that passion. Words cannot describe how greatly God showed up in my life. What an awesome God!!!” – High School Senior

“I had never experienced God’s presence as undeniably tangible as it was on this trip. His hands were everywhere, on the creation itself, on the people of Eleuthra, and on the team. He laid out His plans for us moment by moment requiring us to solely depend on Him. We saw several prayers being answered all at the same time, the giant smiles of those who chose to accept Christ, and the most change suprisingly in us. It was so amazing being there, being disconnected from the world, and searching for God’s face in everything! It’s so hard to continue this focus now that we are back home, but it is truly a fight worth fighting and I pray to stay this hungry for God everyday as I go through my daily routine!!!” – Youth Leader

“What an incredible week on the island of Eluethera!! It was encouraging to see 20 men on the island that are committed to God and now have a vision for discipleship and mentoring this next generation. And to see several young men accept Christ and begin their walk with the support of these men to disciple them is encouraging as well. God has surely used this trip to change lives in Eluethera, and to also change the lives of those on our team. When God works, He changes everyone in the process!!” – Youth Leader

Eleuthera Island

Eleuthera is located about 250 miles east of Florida. It is one of the many islands that make up The Bahamas. Eleuthera is about 100 miles long and averages about 2 miles wide. The island population is about 10,000. The Bahamas became an independent nation in 1973. United Servants Abroad, the agency we are partnered with on Eluthera has been working with local church leadership on the island of Eleuthera since 2001. Very few men participate in worship services. Very few teenagers (especially boys) attend church. There are virtually no youth in church – especially males. United Servants Abroad assisted in the building of a “Youth Center” to try to establish a community wide outreach to all the youth. Unfortunately, they have not gained much traction in actually reaching the teenagers. Highpoint is committed to a multi-year partnership to help create and strengthen youth outreach on the island.

Our work there

During the first week of June, a team of 8 teenagers and 5 adult leaders poured their lives onto the Island of Eluethera. Over the course of the week our team reached out to local teens with the goal of helping them understand their need for God and demonstrating that living for God can be exciting, fun and fulfilling. The week took team members outside of their comfort zone as each was used as a key participant in a God-sized challenge – to make an impact on a group of boys and girls that see little need for God.

We also had an opportunity to lead a two-night conference training pastors and leaders on the island on some “how-to’s” for effective youth outreach. Our prayer was to be used of God to provide vision for authentic Biblical Manhood, Womanhood and discipleship.

Our team also mixed over 40 tons of concrete to help build future missionary housing on the island!

In November of 2009 Highpoint Church fasted, raised money and prayed to get students to camp and for God to move in their lives.

In November of 2009 Highpoint Church fasted, raised money and prayed to get students to camp and for God to move in their lives. Last week at Bigstuf, those prayers were answered. Students found love, connection, freedom and emotions that many had not experienced before. Some learned that it is ok to be vulnerable and share their heart. They learned that there are many people who care about them as individuals. They found new friends and trusted mentors. They also found Jesus Christ and submitted their lives to Him for salvation. Other kids were moved to another level of commitment to God. Another level of excitement. Another level of understanding that there is One way to live life and life abundantly. They loved one another in powerful ways. Leaders found renewed purpose to love God, love people and make disciples.

To anyone who contributed through fasting for change, the student ministry, prayer or any other way – THANK YOU! Lives were changed forever. Your sacrifice was used abundantly by God and will be multiplied through the lives of students that will grow up to impact our world for God!

Now the real work begins for the student ministry team, leaders and parents. We have to work harder to pull these students toward God as the world is pulling them toward apathy, sin and it’s consequences. Only God can do this work but we do have the opportunity to join Him through prayer, dependence and service!

"Your faith will not be defined when life goes according to plan. Your faith will be defined when everything falls apart."

“Your faith will not be defined when life goes according to plan. Your faith will be defined when everything falls apart.” Last night at BigStuf our students were instilled with this powerful truth as we discussed the trials and heartache of life. In small groups we cried, we shared, and most of all sought healing from our Heavenly Father. It was an amazing evening full of love and unity within our Highpoint group. I have been filled with joy seeing God move and work within the lives of our students, and it’s only day 2!!! Please continue to keep us in your prayers!
