If you only have 72 hours to spare in Kuching and it’s your first time here, with family or friends, we’ve got great suggestions for you; the top seven things to do in just 72 hours!

Without further a due, upon your arrival at noon time, you can actually opt for a city tour; we recommend you a guided one. The guided tour should include the top of Civic Centre Tower for a 360 degree view of the city as well as Sarawak Museum to get to know how Sarawak evolves over the centuries. Sarawak Museum was once, the best museum in Asia. Then there is this gigantic cat statues located at both end of Padungan Road, with another one right in front of Grand Margherita Hotel. The best one would be the lone Cat bedecked with lovely costumes all year round at Padungan Road right opposite the Fire Station.

If you do not know, Kuching is actually divided into north and south, managed by North City Council and South Kuching City Council respectively. As you walk along the city, you’ll definitely get a glimpse of both buildings. Next on will be Sarawak’s Taoist Temple and Catholic Church, right opposite Merdeka Palace Hotel. From there, you’ll pass through the Malay village before visiting the latest State Legislative Assembly (reviews say they cost a million ringgit in the process of building it!). Next on, don’t miss the Waterfront, located right before the Sarawak River, for it’s going to be your best souvenir shopping experience! Get your t-shirts, handicraft items and don’t forget those wood carvings! They’re beautiful!

If you’re a cultural enthusiasts, you might be interested in taking a stroll along Padungan Street or Carpenter Street and see what folks in Kuching sell or do for a living. Otherwise, you can also peep into what Kampung Gersik, Satok Market and Serikin town has in store for you. Serikin town is said to be a town near Indonesia border, so do check them out and don’t miss Serikin Market! What lies ahead in Kampung Gersik is the famous ever Kek Lapis Sarawak while Satok Market offers you the salted Terubok Fish, something unique as a souvenir, an all-time favourite for the Sarawakians. Do keep in mind that Satok Market and Serikin Market open only on weekends.

Right after that, it’s advisable to return to your hotel to freshen up a little before you set off for the River Cruise along Sarawak River. You get to choose your ride either in the luxurious Sarawak River Cruise that takes about one hour and a half to travel upstream and downstream or the cheaper, adventurous ones. They both travel the same route with the difference of a bigger yacht and a wooden boat. Landmarks along the river includes the Sarawak Chief Minister’s residence. Next on, you should find yourself a table in Top Spot Seafood Restaurants and settle down for dinner! Try Bukit Mata No.25, a hot spot in the restaurant where you can satisfy your crave for Sarawak’s famous seafood; black pepper crabs, bamboo clam, huge crispy oyster pancake, stir friend jungle fern with belacan or prawn paste. Last but not least, try umai, Melanau’s native dish made of raw fish.

On your second day here, start off early and head on to Annah Rais longhouse, the home of Bidayuh tribe. It would be an opportunity for you to get closer to the inhabitants who have maintained their age old tradition, living in the longhouse. You’ll be able to experience their way of living and will be very much surprise to how some folks are still maintaining the traditions despite some minority who got influenced by the modern world.

Situated some 60 kilometers from Kuching City, the longhouse is located within Padawan Small District. The settlement, oldest in Sarawak, has three rows of longhouses known as Kupo Sebak, Kupo Terkan and Kupo Sijo, located near Sungai Annah. Kupo Terkan is built specially for the tribal leaders. The traditional architectural design of the Bidayuh longhouse has been preserved even after 200 years, maintaining the authentic architectural history from the ancestors.

Last but not least, it would be wonderful to end your trip, dedicated to the Mother Nature. Give a slot in your trip to Semenggoh Wildlife Center. It’s not difficult to get there on your own. What’s so promising about this center is that you’ll definitely be there to witness the wildlife in their natural habitat. Give yourself a chance to see Borneo’s signature animals up close, like the orang utans! You’ll definitely love your experience here!
