August 10, 2010 marked the 30 day point since Las Vegas Metropolitan Police gunned down Erik Scott at the front entrance of the Summerlin Costco. In order to bring continued awareness to the incident and honor Erik, his family and friends coordinated simultaneous candlelight vigils at both the Summerlin Costco and the Costco in Erik’s hometown of Lancaster, CA.

The Summerlin gathering included roughly 125 people, some of which knew Erik but many who did not. The crowd represented a mix of people from all walks of life. Men, women, and children as well as off duty and retired police and military, some of which were the most outspoken of the group. About 1/5 of the attendees chose to display their support by open carrying their own weapons, which is a Constitutionally protected right still honored by 42 of the 50 “United” States.

Although some of the local media outlets are reporting differently, there was a lot of anger and resentment towards the LVMPD. At any given time you could hear between 2 and 5 conversations that were focused on this very topic. One who was not familiar with the situation might have confused this gathering with a group of conspiracy theorists.

The circumstances surrounding Erik’s shooting are devastatingly unclear. The accounts from the Police Officers involved seem to vary greatly from those offered by many eye witnesses and the only “reliable” proof exists in the video system that Costco claims had a glitch. One of Erik’s best friends, Mike Pusateri, isn’t buying this story. Pusateri tells us that Costco has “…a redundant video system. They back their video and audio data offsite.” The lack of available video contributes greatly to the public doubts of the accuracy of the LVMPD’s statements.

Erik Scott had a Concealed Carry Weapon permit (CCW) and was in possession of two guns at the time of his shooting. While Police claim Scott drew one of his firearms, in a threatening manner, multiple witnesses say differently. Moving beyond the first gun, the second gun was discovered by medical staff after Erik had been removed from the Costco property. Those who are familiar with Police procedures find this to be disturbing as well. The common question of “If the officers had done their job properly then why did they not find the second weapon?” casts even more doubt about what really happened.

In an ongoing search for the truth, Erik’s family and friends have banded together. They have created a few Facebook Pages as well as a website where people can go to find and share information ErikBScott.com contains links to the Facebook account, photos, and discussion forums along with a way to make donations and contact the family. To further spread the word, there are currently 7 billboards in the Las Vegas area and 16 more going up within the next week or so. A plane towing a banner which read “Vegas Police cover up? R. I. P. Erik B Scott.com” was flown over Huntington Beach, CA during the U.S. Open of Surfing on Sunday August 8th, 2010.

Chris Castillo, another long time friend of Erik’s had this to say: “It’s very very important for Las Vegas, as a community, to have confidence in our Law enforcement and right now that’s….It’s not right now” Castillo went on to say: “It’s very very suspicious.”

Big Gun Enterprises

Bill Allen from Big Gun Enterprises

Bill Allen first opened his shop as a purveyor of paintball guns. Since then, he has slowly branched out and his shop in Henderson, NV is now home to much more than just paintball gear. Don’t let the size of this small shop fool you, they have a lot more stock on hand than you can tell at first glance. In fact, Big Gun Ent. is currently negotiating to relocate just a couple doors down into a much larger store front. Additionally, they are looking into adding a small indoor range.

Bill makes regular appearances at each of the Las Vegas gun shows and his inventory spread is usually one of the largest, covering multiple tables which are always busy. Just this weekend I spoke with one of their customers as they were making a purchase at the gun show. When I asked why they chose to buy from Big Gun, the customer replied with: “I’ve checked every table at this show and not only is this the best price I’ve seen but the people here are some of the friendliest I’ve spoken to all day.”

Although we are not able to offer a whole lot of info at this time, we are looking forward to returning to Bill’s shop once he is in their new location.

Boulder Rifle and Pistol Club

BRPC Office

The history of the Boulder Rifle and Pistol Club (BRPC) property seems to be a little blurry. I have talked with 7 people in my attempt to gain background info on this Boulder City, NV shooting location and have received the same number of variations on the story. The one thing that each story has in common is that the range was developed sometime in the 1930’s by the Army Corp. of Engineers. Some stories claim the site was set up as a Military base to aid in the security and construction of the Hoover Dam but other stories state that the site wasn’t established until 1938, two years after Hoover Dam was completed.

This somewhat remote club is located about 20 minutes S.E. of Las Vegas and features one of the few 1,000 yard ranges in the area, allowing them to host high power long range precision rifle competitions. The BRPC also plays host to a variety of other events, “details of which can be seen on their website.”

BRPC has multiple ranges for both rifle and pistol shooting as well as some shotgun options. Most of the ranges are equipped with cover and seating. They have a series of courtesy ranges which are open to the public from 8am until 4pm on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, and Mondays that are holidays.

As far as any kind of service goes, don’t expect much. Be sure to bring a cooler full of ice and beverages as well as your own T.P. should you need to make use one of their outhouses. Although the staff can be friendly, they have proven to be less than helpful during each of my four visits. Most of them love to talk but I attribute that to sitting in a hot office for hours at a time with little or no conversation. When it comes to answering questions about their club, the most popular answers I received were either “I’m not sure, you will have to ask somebody else.” or “you can find all that on our website.”

I had been out to BRPC three times this year in attempts to gather photos, video, and information about the club. I was turned away each time. The only reason I went out a fourth time is because somebody (I’d still like to know who) dropped a bunch of our business cards throughout the ranges and one of the board members contacted me to find out why “I” was dropping our cards there but had not listed them on this site. Never mind that I had left only 2 cards there on previous visits along with the polite request for somebody to contact me…Which were ignored.

As you have seen from our other write-ups and reviews, some places have great customer service while others prefer to drive customers away. Let’s just say that I will not be making a 5th trip out to BRPC any time soon nor will I be joining their super elite club.

Spurlock's Gun Shop in Henderson, NV

Rance Spurlock

Rance Spurlock has been selling firearms since 1978. Over the years his store, Spurlock’s Gun Shop, has bounced around the Vegas area a bit before settling down at the current Henderson, NV location. Rance purchased this 2600 square foot building and property a few years ago and has no intention of ever moving shop again.

Most Las Vegas area gun stores are filled with tactical weapons and gear but Spurlock’s place is different. Although he does carry a few “Black Rifles”, the store is really more focused on hunting than anything else. They stock a pretty good selection of hunting rifles and shotguns plus multiple display cabinets representing all the major handgun manufacturers as well as a few harder to find specialty handguns and rifles.

Of all the shops I have visited so far, Spurlock’s has the largest selection of reloading equipment and accessories. You can find everything you need from Primers and bullets to powder and instructional reloading books.

Spurlock’s is yet another great gun shop with friendly staff, fair prices, and a nice selection.

Rifle Dynamics 7.62×54R PSL Guerrilla Sniper Rifle

I had the pleasure of getting to shoot Rifle Dynamic’s Guerrilla Sniper Rifle. The weapon is a 7.62×54R PSL worked over by Jim and his team to exploit the advantages of this light weight, semi-auto rifle. This rifle fulfills the demands of Gabe Suarez’s “The Guerrilla Sniper”.

My first impression of the weapon, as always with Jim’s products, is the high level of quality. The fit and finish are excellent, the rifle feels like a solid piece of equipment in your hands. I’m not very familiar with Soviet based weapons and the ones I’ve handled always felt cheap. The products coming from Rifle Dynamics have totally changed my perception of the quality and accuracy potential of the AK based weapon systems. When Jim handed me the rifle, it immediately struck me how balanced and light it was. I could tell that off hand shots, improvised shooting positions, and maneuvering with the rifle would be easier to do just from the weight savings and balance alone!

I was given a mix of ammunition to try which consisted of; Bulgarian AP, Bulgarian FMJ, 7N1, Czech silver tip and Lellier & Bellot FMJ. Honestly, the rifle shot well with all the ammo types but the stand out was the 7N1. I have to also note that the Bulgarian FMJ surprised me and held a tight 10 round group on a IPSC target at 200 meters.

Rifle Dynamics PSL

You have to remember that when I was shooting this rifle, I was using my range bag as a front rest with my off hand working as the rear rest. The sights were pretty lined up when I got it so I didn’t adjust the sights, I just compensated by holding over. The rifle was shooting high and left so what I did was use a 6 O’clock hold and put the left corner of the front sight post of the bottom right corner of the target. I was able to easily take out a IPSC target out, with both the 7N1 and Bulgarian FMJ. The trigger reminded me of a AR two stage trigger type with take up at the start of the pull and a clean light brake. Jim later filled me in that the trigger can be “tuned” to the users preferences and can be adjusted to brake cleanly. I think anyone seriously using a PSL for long range work should consider this upgrade to their rifle.

Recoil was not an issue with this gun and the brake made it very easy to keep on target even with its lack of weight. The stock used on the rifle was an improvement over what normally comes on a PSL. It has a very natural grip angle and comes with a cheek piece that you can move out of the way to use the iron sights. When using an optic the piece rotates into place giving you a solid cheek weld and consistent eye relief every time!

All in all I was very impressed with the total package. The gun was comfortable to carry and shoot. I believe Rifle Dynamics was able to create a better and more accurate PSL rifle. While shooting it Saturday I stretched it out to 500 meters. I put the rear sight on the #5 mark and used the same hold over I was using for 200 meters. I was able to hit 7 out of 10 rounds using 7N1. I have no doubt that with a good optic and ammo this rifle is cabable of consistent hits of a man sized target out to 800 meters, maybe more in talented hands!

Discount Firearms is a Las Vegas based gun store and shooting range….That’s the most positive thing I can say about this place.

When I first walked in, I noticed they have a good amount of retail space. Unfortunately that space is fairly empty and a number of the items on the shelves are covered in dust. From looking around the store I would guess that the last time they dusted the place was back around 2005 when they took the photos for their website.

As I entered the building there was a couple purchasing a firearm and three employees (one of them was the owner) helping them do it. There was another employee and one customer heading to their indoor range so the customer could qualify for his CCW. Then there were the two tourists anxiously reviewing the rental firearms but getting absolutely no service whatsoever. As for me, I walked the entire store twice then stood at the center register for a few more minutes. By the time I was acknowledged I had been in the store for 15 minutes.

Speaking of the rental counter, this is what they say on their website: “Discount firearms has a wide selection of Machine Guns and Pistols for rent.” OK, I have a question. Where is this “wide selection” they are advertising? I saw a small amount of “machine guns” and a below average amount of regular guns for rent.

As I mentioned before, yeah they have an indoor range but to be honest, it’s not worth my time to go into any specific details about a place that is so improperly managed and staffed with people who clearly don’t care about their customers.

Now let’s address the name issue. “Discount Firearms” implies exactly that….DISCOUNT firearms. Apparently in their world, the word “discount” means “higher priced” as there is obviously no discounts associated with the cost of their firearms. That being said, as a potential customer, I definitely felt discounted by the lack of service and generally lazy attitude displayed by every employee I saw.

When I was finally greeted I was asked “Do you need help with something?” To which I replied yes and asked for a business card. The employee handed me the card and then I asked if the owner was available. I’d like to point out that Anna, who is an owner, was standing less than three feet away and pretending not to listen to the conversation. The employee then asked me why I wanted the owner and went so far as to state that: “The owner has the privilege of customer screening.” I handed him my business card and informed him that I wanted to learn more about their store and give them some free advertising. He asked for my name and phone number then said he would pass it along. My guess is the card hit the trash can before their door closed behind me.

IMHO, the bottom line is that everything about this place sucks. The only light at the end of the tunnel is the “For Sale” sign that has been hanging on their website for many MANY months.

Take my advice and avoid this place. There are plenty of other Vegas area gun stores who will be more than happy to provide you lower prices and quality service with a smile.

J.D. Lime from Veriforce tactical

J.D. Lime, from Veriforce Tactical, is another one of the friendly faces that you consistently see at the Crossroads of the West gun shows. Although his selection is not huge, I’ve been known to pick some things up from him several times simply because he had what I was looking for and it was easy to find without sorting through mountains of accessories that I have no interest in.

Veriforce Tactical is an Arizona based company whose primary focus is on parts & accessories for the AR and the AK platforms. If you want it and can’t find it, J.D. is more than happy to special order it for you and even offers that ability on the company’s website.

I’ve been to a lot of gun shows over the years and I’ve run into a large number of real “helmuts” who think they are better than the rest of us. In contrast, J.D.’s attitude is awesome. He always seems to be in a good mood and is more than happy to answer your questions without making you feel like you are pestering him. He’s a genuinely friendly guy so be sure to stop by his booth and say hello the next time the Crossroads show rolls into your town.

Live Chat

At the top of the right hand column you will notice the new chat box. Everybody can read this chat but you must be a subscriber to participate in it. The chat box is visible from any and all pages within the site. We have plans to further customize the chat window, within the Discussion Forums, by moving it to the top of the forums section and extending it to a larger size. We hope to accomplish this within the next week or two.

Shopping Cart

Although you don’t see it there yet, it is installed and working. We are currently awaiting approval of a new merchant account so that we may process credit card transactions. We have been receiving a number of requests to sell some of the products we have been reviewing as well as advertising and other firearm parts and accessories that are of interest to our subscribers. Please note, WE DO NOT SELL GUNS. This shopping cart will go live pending the approval of our new merchant account.

Event Calendar

Glance up to the top navigation bar and you will find a new title for our Event Calendar. We have spent quite a bit of time populating the calendar with various events. The events are NOT limited to Nevada and anybody with a firearms related event is welcome to submit a request to have their event listed. Please follow the instructions under the calendar to submit your requests.

Links

As our link section has grown, it has become a bit too big for the left hand column where it was previously located. Not only have we re-located the links to the navigation bar but we have also customized them into categories for easier location of the things you are looking for. We are still offering FREE links as well as link and banner exchanges. More info on the FREE stuff can be found in our Advertising section.

Advertising

We are now offering two kinds of advertising for your firearms related websites. The first is FREE link, button, and banner exchanges. We have also started receiving requests for premium advertising and marketing services. Although we will continue to offer the same free stuff, there are some costs associated with running this site and if people are wanting to contribute to those expenses, we are not going to continue turning down their generosity. Information on both the FREE and paid advertising can be found on our Advertising page.

RSS Feeds

We’ve added multiple RSS feeds featuring our Blog, the Discussion Forums, Live Chat, and the Shopping Cart products once that feature goes live. We have also directed a number of the feeds through Feedburner for easier publication.

Social Networks The social networks icons on the top right have been changed a bit. Instead of clicking them to share our articles on your favorite social networks, they now link directly to our profiles on Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace. Please take a moment to add us to your friends list on each of the networks you participate in. As for the social network sharing, we have relocated those button to the top and bottom of each blog entry. We ask that you share our blog by clicking on each social network icon that you use. If you do this for each article we post then it will not only help get the information out to all your contacts but it will also help 702shooter.com with our search engine rankings thereby helping those we are blogging about.
