Small toys/games are important too as they will provide some comfort and entertainment during a stressful time.

Older children can be responsible for their own pack of items/clothes too.
You can include any other items in your 72 Hour Kit that you feel are necessary for your family's survival.

Some items and/or flavors might leak, melt, "flavor" other items, or break open. Dividing groups of items into individual Ziploc bags might help prevent this.All this should fit into a space about the size of your average garbage can and can be stored just about anywhere.

For many years we had been diligently organising emergency disaster survival packs and other emergency preparedness items, always looking for ways to improve our packs in case of an unpredictable natural disaster or emergency.

We have seen first hand what can happen when you don't have an emergency survival pack and offer 12 instructional videos to help you with your personal preparedness.

With experience in the Australian Army, we had seen our fair share of catastrophic floods and bushfires, and more importantly, those who were helplessly affected by it.

That is why we kept a close eye on our own packs, making sure it would not fail us when we needed them most.

As our family grew with marriages and children we realised that not all new members to our family knew much about 72-hour packs and other emergency preparedness planning.

So we made it a family mission to meet regularly with our packs and discuss ways to improve them and to educate the new members of our family about these life saving survival techniques.

Together we became more and more focussed on ensuring all our family were prepared with the right emergency survival packs, so in the event of an natural emergency everyone from the kids to the grandparents would be as prepared as possible.

Not only did these measures make us all feel safer as a family, but it also began to raise our awareness of an ill-equipped emergency survival pack.

Preparing emergency survival packs for able bodied adults is one thing, but preparing emergency survival packs for kids and those not so able bodied is quite another. That's when we realised the big problem with home-made emergency disaster survival packs.

Depending on the distance one might have to travel, they could easily become very uncomfortable and difficult to manage.

Your emergency survival packs weight may not seem like a big deal now but after a few long kilometres on foot, you will begin to question if you really need all those gadgets in your bag.

Once this became apparent to us - that lugging a well-equipped emergency bag around for sometime can become bothersome for kids and the elderly - we decided to create an emergency survival pack that would meet the following criteria;

The elderly must be able to carry the emergency survival pack comfortably over long distances

Pregnant women and nursing mothers must be able to carry the emergency survival pack comfortably over long distances and...

The children must be able to carry the emergency survival pack comfortably over long distances

As well as this we also needed to ensure that the emergency survival contents were;

Lightweight

Reliable

Easy to use

This gave us a new direction to set about meeting these challenges and when we talked with friends and extended family members we found they too had similar challenges.

So after tedious and painstaking research of going through hundreds of emergency survival items, not only did we find emergency survival products that met our needs, but we also found emergency survival products that were genuinely affordable.

It was at that moment we realised we could help our families AND friends AND everyone else by creating a reliable and cost efficient emergency disaster survival pack - so we did.

Building a Baby Emergency Kit

It all started when for the fourth time in a week, I arrived at my destination, looked in the diaper bag and realized I’d forgotten something. Rewind a few hours and I could picture myself scurrying about, shoving things into any one of our four diaper bags. No wonder I was unprepared. It sparked a thought about whether I was prepared for my baby’s well-being in an emergency situation: car breakdown, house fire, natural disaster, family emergency.
No one wants to find themselves in an emergency, and most of us think “it’ll never happen to us.” We don’t want to be alarmist, but the reality is that emergencies happen, but unforeseen doesn’t have to mean unprepared.My husband and I have long stashed an Emergency Essentials Roadwise Emergency Kit in each of our cars in the event of car breakdown or other emergency. Some people keep a “Bug-Out-Bag” close to the door in their home. While there are probably items in our emergency car kits I could use for a baby, I decided to create a Baby Emergency Kit (BEK), the baby version of the “But-Out-Bag.” This bag somewhat duplicates a diaper bag, but also includes hygiene and "information" items (see below) if we couldn’t get home or to a store for 72 hours.

Roadwise Emergency Kit

I decided the Baby Emergency Kit needed to be “bare bones” because chances are, in an emergency I’ll have one of our diaper bags as well. But since, as I mentioned, our diaper bags are constantly interchanged, I wanted a bag that always included the bare essentials. Also, I didn’t want to add a lot of weight/volume to our regular emergency kits.

While your own kit will vary depending on the age and needs of your child, here are my tips and suggestions for making your own Baby Emergency Kit:

1. Do a little “home shopping” – You probably have duplicate baby items you wouldn’t miss day to day; use these to fill your BEK. Select items you don’t need daily because you don’t want to keep packing and unpacking this bag like just another diaper bag. Find items that won’t expire or lose their usefulness (like sized clothing/diapers would).

2. Think small – You already have a baby to carry, you don’t want a 15 lb BEK too. I used a plastic makeup case I found in my closet. It’s small, water-resistant, has mini inside pockets, and zips closed so nothing falls out. Also think small for items in the bag - use sample packets of diaper cream, ointments, (like those received in the hospital) to equip the bag. Trial size, travel size and sample packs reduce the size and weight of your kit. I included mini nail files, packets of Brush ups for when baby has teeth, and mini books for entertainment. I also found a small stick-on baby thermometer that reads body temps for up to 48 hours, which eliminated the need to include a regular thermometer!
3. Make it Multi-Task – Include items with dual purpose. Instead of separate wipes, burp clothes, washcloths, I packed three small baby washcloths – these can be wet for washing or baby bum wiping. They can become a tiny bandage, burp cloth or diaper stuffing. Of course, the hope is you have a water supply to wash and reuse, but carrying a lot of disposable items doesn’t make sense if you need your bag to stay a manageable size. I included a small blanket which could be re-purposed as a pillow, changing pad, or even clothing if baby’s outfit becomes soiled.
4. Include information – Your baby probably can’t talk, so include information in the unthinkable event you become separated from your child. Create a laminated information card with the baby’s name, birthday, parents’ names, address/phone information, and medical/feeding information. I included a photo of the baby and of us, so we could be identified and reunited with baby. Also attached to the outside of the BEK is a “Grab It” card – this lists other items NOT in the bag that I might grab if I have time/room (extras like clothing, diapers, food, medications).

You’re probably wondering, “What about…?” Here are items I didn’t include in this kit and why (I may add these later, but right now, decided against them):

a. Clothing – Babies grow too fast to have clothes sitting around in a BEK. Plus, clothes add bulk; in an emergency, a baby can wear the same outfit for a few days, or, be wrapped in a blanket or a larger child/adult’s piece of clothing

b. Food – I breast feed, so I would continue nursing in an emergency. However, should I have to give the baby to dad or someone else, I packed a 2 oz bottle of ready-to-drink formula with a nipple (the container becomes a bottle and can be reused) and a sample pack of powdered formula. It’s not much, but would get your baby through a couple days.

c. Pacifier – if your baby uses one, chances are they already have one with them. If not, a baby can always suck their thumb or an adult finger for comfort.

d. Medications – I am fortunate to have a healthy baby who has never needed medication yet; plus, our regular bags contain first aid kits, so I didn’t need to duplicate these items. Of course, if your baby had medical needs, you would want to include their medications. You might list meds on the “Grab It” list to avoid having expired meds in the BEK.
I’m sure there are many items it would be “nice” to have in an emergency with the baby, but please know my BEK is still a work in progress. At least now I’m thinking about how to be more prepared so I don’t find myself scrambling. With this Baby Emergency Kit, I’ll have some peace of mind, and hopefully a few minutes to look at the “Grab It” list and actually add some of those “extras” before heading out the door.

This water treatment system has made life so much easier on the trail and around camp that I sometimes laugh at the old way we used to do things. Many moons ago, we didn’t take a water filter at all. We always tried to get water from fresh running sources and hope for the best. In today’s world, I don’t know if there is a place on earth anymore that you can just stick your head in the water and drink. Well, at least not feel comfortable about it! We eventually started using pump style water filters. They did there job and brought some peace of mind. They also brought a lot of frustration and sore arms. We would always draw straws (in our case, sticks) to see who had to go down to the stream or lake and pump water for the group. It’s not a fun job. It takes forever just to get a liter of water. The filters are usually rated for 500 gallons, which means that we had to replace the filter after every trip. That seems understandable, until you go buy the replacement filter. They cost almost as much as the whole system! Along came the Sawyer gravity water treatment system. Never replace the filter, never pump water and I’m never going back! Last week we took both the 2 Liter system and the 4 liter system. It’s really as simple as it sounds. Jetboil Cooking System - Review

As a backpacker, the goal is to always keep the weight of your pack at a minimum. The Jetboil is not the lightest stove on the market. However, it makes up for that in efficiency. For the most part, we carry Freeze Dried meals that need boiling water to hydrate. The Jetboil will bring 2 cups of water to boil in under 2 minutes. This means that we carry less fuel. These stoves take a real beating in our packs during the trip.
I have the same stove that I purchased 6 years ago. The only problem I have ever had, was that I broke the automatic ignitor last year. I was able to find a replacement for $10.00. Not bad. I include this stove in my emergency survival kit because of the efficiency and dependability. We know that the Jetboil is a fairly expensive stove, but if I had to use anything for cooking for an extended period of time. This would be my choice, hands down.

3. Rotate your food.
Most food comes with expiration dates on it. It will be important to rotate your food according to this schedule so that you do not find yourself in an emergency situation with expired food.

EMERGENCY FUEL

CANNED HEAT (STERNO) - This can be purchased at most sporting goods stores as well as most grocery stores. You will need to store 1 large can per person per day.

BUDDY BURNER - Select a shallow can (tuna, cat food, etc.) and insert coil of corrugated cardboard the height of the can.

Pour melted paraffin to partially fill can. Allow to harden. Birthday candle in center will help light. A lid on the can with a wire handle will help control the heat.

VAGABOND STOVE - Use a number 10 can. Cut opening around the top of the can with a can opener punch. This is to provide a draft for your fire. Then cut an opening at the bottom of the can large enough to fit the Buddy Burner or a small fire. Cook on top.

FUEL CONSUMPTION AND BURNING TIME

Lighting Equipment

GAS LANTERN (Coleman, two mantle)
Burning at the rate of 5 hours per day, the following amounts of white gas would be used: Per day - 5/12 quarts; per week - 2 12 quart per month - 3 1/8 gallons; per year - 38 gallons.

KEROSENE LANTERN - (with a 1" wick)
This device will burn 45 hours on 1 quart. (Dietz Lantern Information) burning at the rate of 5 hours per day, the following amount of kerosene would be used: Per day - 1/9 quarts; per week 7/9 quarts; per month 3 1/13 quarts; per year - 10 gallons.

FLASHLIGHT (Two battery)
Batteries used were well-known brands in testing). Continuous running on new batteries - 7 hours. 7 month old batteries, continuous running - 5 hours.

CANDLES (Burning time)
3/4 diameter x 4" tall - 2 hours and 20 minutes
7/8 diameter x 4" tall - 5 hours
2" square x 9" tall - 7 hours per inch or : 4 inches - 28 hours
9 inches - 63 hours

Heating or Cooking Equipment

TWO PLATE GAS BURNER (Coleman)

With both burners burning for 4 hours per day, the following
amount of white gas would be used: per day - 1 quart; per week -
7 quarts; per month - 7 1/2 gallons; per year - 91 gallons.

CAUTION: DO NOT STORE WHITE GAS, KEROSENE, & SIMILAR FUELS IN THE
HOUSE OR WITHIN THE REACH OF CHILDREN. Consult distributors of
fuel, or government agencies that would have information on the
proper storage of fuels.

INTRODUCTION WHY A EMERGENCY SURVIVAL KIT?

What will you do if disaster strikes your neighborhood: a fire,
a riot, a flood, a tornado, a hurricane, or an earthquake? The
most critical need for help after the disaster is during the first
72 hours, yet community and government assistance will probably
not be available during this period.

YOU AND YOUR FAMILY WILL BE ON YOUR OWN!

With a minimum of expense and trouble it is possible to bring
together a few basic items which will ease the stress of a
difficult situation and may even save you and your families life.

In any form of emergency situation, several things take place:
both physical and emotional.

1 - We will all experience emotional shock and a cer-
tain amount of hysteria.

2 - The propensity of accidents increases.

The greatest threat to loss of life are accidents
that lead to severe bleeding or other forms of
injury or trauma.

If we are not able to address these injuries as effec-
tively as possible, this will greatly increase our own
stress and could virtually debilitate some people and
prevent them from acting in a sound and rational man-
ner.

We must keep in mind that in the event of a severe disaster, all
familiar public services, including medical, will be immediately
over-taxed and as a result, will be basically ineffectual to you
as an individual, particularly during the first 72 hours.

Assistance Organizations such as the Red Cross, Hospitals, the
Military, National Guard, etc., require a certain response time
They are looking to you to take care of yourself and your family
completely for a period of a few hours up to 72 hours. It takes
approximately 72 hours until their operations are in full service.

Emergency Survival Preperation HOW TO PACK IT...HOW TO STORE IT

It is important that you take a comprehensive survey of your own
family units needs and insure that you have included any special
items that are unique to you. Your needs could be very much
different than the suggested lists, only you can decide what you
and your families needs are based on your resources and experi-
ences.

Once you have established and gathered together what you feel are
necessary requirements for both an Emergency Preparedness Kit and
a substantial First Aid Kit; you will need a container that these
items will go in.

These kits do not have to be complicated! Rather, simple is
better than complex, however, the need of quality and durability
should be one of the major criteria for any items included.

EMERGENCY SURVIVAL WATER STORAGE

The Civil Defense Bulletin Reads:
"Water to be stored should be drawn into containers
before it is needed. Don't wait until an emergency
happens before laying in your supply. When an emergen-
cy occurs, it may be to late to act. The public water
service may already be interrupted or contaminated.
Also, if thousands of households are trying to fill
water containers at the same time, they would reduce
the pressure in the street mains. This would make fire
fighting more difficult. Waiting until something
happens before you draw and store the water you need
could cost you your home or even your life."

Be Careful About Rain Water -
Rain water that has been collected should be treated
the same as any other unknown water source. Rain
water contains small particulates and acid.

Good Methods of Storing Water -
Store Bottled Water - may be stored up to six months
with no detrimental effect or rotation required.

Store Water in Old Bleach Bottles -
Rotate every 7 to 9 months.
Do not rinse the Plastic Chlorox Bottles
before filling with water. You should not
get ill from drinking this water as the resi-
due left in the bottle is probably just the
right amount of chlorine to protect the wa-
ter.

Purchase five gallon water containers from a camping
supply store or Army Surplus store. Keep in mind,
however that you will need to transport this and possi-
bly on foot so consider the weight involved if you
choose this method. Water weighs approximately
8-9 pounds per gallon. (actually 8.3 pounds, not including
container.)

Water Purification Methods -

Boiling- Most water can be purified for drinking pur-
poses by boiling it for 10 minutes. This
will destroy the bacteria. In order to im-
prove the taste it will be necessary to aer-
ate it after boiling. This is accomplished
by pouring it from one container to another
several times. This should be done after the
water has been allowed to cool.

Chlorination- You can use any commercially available bleach
solution. It should contain 5.25% Sodium
Hypochlorite. Add the following to a clean
container in which when the water is added.
It can be thoroughly mixed by stirring or shak-
ing.

4 drops per gallon
20 drops = 1/4 tsp or
enough to purify 5 gallons.

After adding the proper dosage and stirring,
allow the water to stand for 30 minutes. It
should then have a distinct odor of chlorine.
If this odor is not present, add another dose
of the solution and let stand for another 15
minutes.

The taste or smell or chlorine in water as
treated in this manner is a sign of safety.
It is not harmful. On the contrary, if you
cannot detect chlorine in water you are try-
ing to purify by this method, do not drink
it.

Purification Tablets - Tablets that release iodine may be used safe-
ly to purify drinking water. These tablets
can be found at most drug stores and sporting
goods stores. The names vary but it is ge-
nerically known as halazone tablets.
Follow the directions on the package.
Usually one tablet is sufficient for one
quart of water. The dosage is doubled
for cloudy water.

Iodine - Ordinary Household Iodine may be used to
purify small quantities of water. Add 2-3
drops of Tincture Of Iodine to each quart of
clear water (8-10 for cloudy water). Mix and
allow to stand for 30 minutes.

Other purification methods may be recommended by the proper
authorities if special conditions arise. In such cases follow
the instructions of your local government or authorities.

It is suggested that each member of your household have a minimum
of 1.5 gallons of water per day. This is including infants
(nursing mothers will need more). It is suggested then, that you
store 4.5 gallons per member of your family for your 72 hour
supply.

PROPER EMERGENCY SEWAGE DISPOSAL

I know that most of you do not want to consider the possibility
of having to leave your home and then rough it even to the point
of having to be responsible for the dispose of your wastes,
however, the possibility exists and the following will help you
to take care of this unpleasant task in the proper and safest
manner.

You will need 12 to 18 large brown paper bags for each
person for each day. This allows the use of 4 to 6 bags
each time for 3 times per day.
You will place the bags 4 to 6 thick (one inside the other).

Pointed Shovel

The bags are called soil bags. Paper is preferable to plastic
because of their biodegradable properties. You will place these
bags one inside the other and spray with a disinfectant. Then
fold up 2 sheets of newspaper and place in the bottom of the bag.
Place this bag in the hole that you will use.

After use pour 1/4 cup bleach into bag or douse with lysol then
tie the bag shut with a piece of twine and spray the bag with
insecticide. If you are moving on, dig a hose 30 to 36 six
inches deep and bury the bag. Make sure that you cover it well
with dirt and then stomp on the dirt to make sure that there isn't
any air-gaps in the hole.

If you have made camp and will be staying you can place all the
soil bags in a large plastic bag with a tie on it and place it in
a large trash can that is not being used for garbage. Then at
the end of the day, all the paper bags can be buried at one time.

WHAT DO I NEED?

INSTRUCTION MANUALS ON EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS - This is a start.
It can be reviewed with family members. Further information is
available to you at your local library.

BATTERY POWERED RADIO - Local stations and the Emergency Broad-
cast System will be the only source of reliable information
during an emergency.

If the radio is a permanent addition to your 72 hour kit it
should be checked regularly to make sure both it and the batter-
ies are in working order.

FLASHLIGHT - These should be stored outside of the radio and
flashlight. The shelf life can be extended if the batteries are
kept in the refrigerator or freezer.

FAMILY RECORDS AND VALUABLES - Birth Certificates, Naturalization
Papers, and Diplomas, Insurance Certificates, Genealogy Informa-
tion, Computer Disks, Passports, etc.

ITEMS FOR STRESS MANAGEMENT - After the initial response to an
emergency, the disrupted life style and disorientation can cause
undo emotional stress and feeling of insecurity. Items that are
emotionally reassuring should be included in the emergency kit.

These can include crayons, coloring books, story books, puzzles,
soft small toys for children. Personal items for adults should
be included such as books, handiwork, musical instrument, or
sports equipment.

PLASTIC BAGS AND TIES - These items can serve as garbage contain-
ers, ground cloths, tents, wash basins, broken window cover, and
substitute rain coat.

DISINFECTANT - Bleach, lysol, betadine can be used to treat
sewage, waste water, and refuse to minimize infection. Storage
containers for these items must be unbreakable.

IMPROVISED TOILET - Pack a pointed shovel, and a plastic bucket
with a tight fitting lid. Pack 12 to 18 paper bags per person
per day. Sanitation is the most important consideration.
Remember to also pack the toilet tissue.

PAPER CUPS, PLATES, BOWLS and DISPOSABLE UTENSILS - This will
help you to conserve water and at the same time minimize contami-
nation problems.

PAPER TOWELS

SOAP - Liquid soap (soft soap or pump ivory) works best when
water supplies are limited.

MEDICATIONS FOR THREE DAYS (72 HOURS) FOR EACH MEMBER OF THE FAMILY

TOILETRIES - Although these are not necessary for survival they
will contribute to a sense of well-being and comfort. Toothbrush
and toothpaste, comb and hair brush, washcloth and towel, deodor-
ant, shaving supplies and mirror, shampoo and mouthwash.

FIRST AID KIT - It is assumed that major medical needs will be
taken care of by community resources. The community has a plan
which will deploy paramedics, fire departments, police, and other
medical personnel as needed to areas where major injuries have
occurred.
The purpose, therefore, of the items included in the family First
Aid Kit is to treat minor injuries so that they do not become a
major threat to health during the first few days of an emergency.

WATER STORAGE - General Water Storage is 1.5 gallons per person
per day.

SLEEPING BAGS and BEDROLLS - Wool blankets resist fire, they warm
even when wet and they are less bulky than sleeping bags. There
must be adequate and appropriate sleeping cover for every member
of the family.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER

CAN OPENER - A manual type must be packed with any canned goods.

UTILITY KNIFE - A sharp versatile knife will come in handy for
many purposes.

ADJUSTABLE WRENCH - This must be kept handy to gas and water
lines. Each member of the family should be trained how to turn
off gas or water in the event of an emergency. Turning off water
not only prevents damage to one's home, but also provides in-
creased water pressure for community use.

Water trapped in the hot water tank and indoor plumbing will stay
clean once the main water valve is turned off.

EXTRA CHANGE OF CLOTHING and UNDERWEAR FOR EACH FAMILY MEMBER

MISCELLANEOUS - Small Ax, Heavy Gloves, and MATCHES stores in a
waterproof unbreakable container.

SOS-
In the case of most emergency's there will be little if no
communication over telephone lines.
It is imperative that all members of your family learn to send
morse code SOS. This is the universal sign for HELP.
It can be sent many ways, by signal mirror, lantern, key and
whistle.
It is very simple, however, care must be taken to insure that
each member knows how to send it and receive it. You must
practice this skill if you are to retain it.

If you have any further need of information post or e-mail to me and
I'll try to find the answers for you. Our kits are homemade and we
keep them in small backpacks (2 for each person) and the water in
portable containers. My Husband's backpack is in his vehicle as he is
on the road most of the time. He keeps the first aid kit (extensive)
with him as he is a volunteer EMT. I have the children's packs right
by the front door in a closet, along with the family first aid kit.
We keep an extra set in my car. By having an extra in the car - if
you come across an accident or someone who is stranded with a broken
vehicle - you can offer some assistance (i.e. blanket, flashlight food,
or water).

All of my children have been assigned jobs - one thing that they need
to do in case of emergency or evacuation. We routinely practice these
items. Then they pick up their kits and meet at the assigned meeting
point.

We have only had to leave once - it was during a fire when we lived in
Southern California. We were gone overnight. It was good to have
things that the children felt comfortable with. We returned home with
no incident.

How to Make Emergency Survival - Milk Jug

Instructions for making Emergeny Survival Kit

Step 1 – Make sure you have saved 1 milk jug and 3 2-liter bottles per person. Wash them all out with soap and let dry.
Step 2 – Multiply the number of kits you want by the items listed in the shopping list and purchase the food items from Walmart or your neighborhood grocery store. All the food will cost around $8-10.

Step 3 – Purchase a wing stove and fuel pellets from an emergency preparedness store such as Emergency Essentials or if one isn’t available in your area follow the links below to order online. Only one stove is NECESSARY per family, but they are pretty cheap so if you’d like to have one per kit that is fine too. It will make it much more convenient in a true emergency.

Step 4 – Cut straight down the middle of a milk jug diagonal from the handle. Go about 1/3 of the way down. At the bottom of that cut, make a horizontal slice coming from each side but leave about 2 inches of the jug intact. This should make a sort hatch that you can pull open and insert the items in. Watch our video below if you are having trouble visualizing how to do this.

Step 5 – Place the necessary items into each milk jug according to the contents list. Put the Tang and cocoa servings into small zip-lock bags (1/4 c. per serving). If you have extra food left over, stick it in as space permits. Tape the milk jug up. Tape the contents list to the outside of the jug and record today’s date and the family member who will use that kit.

VOILA!

Step 6 – Fill your 2 liter bottles with water and store all of the items in an easily accessible place (your car trunk is the ideal place if you have room). Check out our Step 2: Water page for more information on how to properly store the water.

Things to Look Closely at When Shopping for a Good Quality 72 Hour Survival Kit

1. Quality of the Bag:

Most the time the search stops right here. Look closely at the quality of the bag. It should be well constructed, made to take heavy-duty abuse, have easy carrying handles and if a backpack, have padded shoulder straps. Does it have extra room for you to add an old sweatshirt or light jacket? How about extra room to add a pair of old tennis shoes (in an evacuation you can walk or run faster in tennis shoes than dress shoes or heels).
Remember, this bag is going to protect your "survival insurance" supplies and it had better be up to the task. It should be able to endure the punishment of bouncing around in the trunk of your car for years.

2. First-Aid Kit:
Look closely here. Most kits simply include a ziplock bag with a few bandaids and antiseptic wipes. Better kits will have a much broader selection of first-aid items and also include a comprehensive first-aid book. First-aid kits can range from the $2 types to the $30+ types. Be sure your kit has a wide range of various first-aid supplies.

3. Food:
Be careful here. Your kit should only have foods specifically made to be non-thirst provoking, provide high calories (for energy), be low in protein (requires less water of digestion), not affected by high heat (think, car trunk in the summer), have a long shelf-life and yet still tastes good. Lifeboat 'emergency food rations' are ideal for 72 hour kits and meet all these requirements like the food bars made by Datrex or Mainstay. We recommend only the 3600 calorie size bars (1200 calories per day for 3 days). Smaller sizes are woefully inadequate.

4. Water:
Your kit should include water. Some kits have none. The best way to store water in your kit is using U.S. Coast Guard Approved "Lifeboat" water ration pouches. They have a 5 year shelf-life. At a minimum you should have 3 to 4 pouches (4 oz each) per day per person (or means to collect and store more). No, that is not a lot of water, but remember, weight is always a factor and you may need to hike with your kit for some distance.

5. Flashlight & Radio:
Here is often where good quality kits differ dramatically from lesser quality ones. Does your kit come with a quality flashlight and include batteries, or is it the $1 store type? Is there a backup light source such as an instant lightstick or long burning candle? Does it include a good quality am/fm radio? A radio should be included so you can hear the latest news reports and updates. It is also a good moral booster. Be sure batteries are included and that you rotate them every couple of years (you might even want to add an additional set for added safety). A windup rechargeable solar/dynamo radio would even be even a better choice like the one that comes with this upgrade kit.

6. Shelter, Heat & Warmth:
Many low cost kits do not include much. Protection from the elements is important. A heavy mil thickness 'tube tent' makes a low cost shelter for 2 people and should be included in your kit (it can also be used as a signaling device). Your kit should also have several items to cover the basics of Heat & Warmth, too, such as a long burning candle with MATCHES (for light & heat), instant pocket hand warmers and a Space® Blanket for each person. As always, remember quality. Most companies will only use low cost inferior knockoffs.

7. Is the Kit Made for 1 or 2 People?
Most preparedness experts recommend having one or multiple kits that protect 2 people each. The reason for that is when disaster strikes, you'll be preparedness for both you and someone else (child, co-worker, etc)

More notes on Emergency Disaster Survival Kits

1. Store water. Many times after a disaster the safety of the water supply is in doubt. Having water on hand can be critically important.
2. Don't forget food in the freezer. Because the electricity was out and freezers defrosted, many families had more food (for the short term) than they could use. Neighbors got together to barbecue steaks that thawed. Many teenagers said they never ate better than during the disaster.
3. Store batteries for flashlights and radios. It seemed like everyone in the country knew more about what was happening with the disasters than the people involved in them did. A television or radio that ran on batteries was often the only source of news. Flashlights allowed those who had them to read or play games after the sun went down.
4. Have a family plan in case of emergency. Discuss where to meet and what to do in case you are not at home when disaster strikes.
5. Photos and journals can't be replaced. Make sure they are in a place where they can be grabbed quickly. Even better, make duplicate prints of your favorite family photos and send them to relatives out of state.
6. Additional supplies. Other items good to have in an emergency could include regularly required medicine (such as insulin); a change of clothes (work clothes would be best); a camp stove and fuel; first aid kit; games; bedding or a sleeping bag.
7. Cash and gas may come in handy. With power out, banks were closed, automatic tellers didn't work, and service stations could not pump fuel. Usually it only takes a couple of days for generators to be brought in to get these services functioning again, but in the meantime, those with money and gasoline have purchasing power and mobility. - passports
- certified copies of birth certificates
- social security numbers
- health insurance policy numbers and contact information
- life insurance policy numbers and contact information
- living will
- credit cards AND traveler's checks/cash. (Yes, credit cards -- remember during the gas riots caused by Hurricane Katrina and Rita that many gas stations stopped taking cash for security reasons. Traveler's checks work like cash and can be replaced if lost or stolen.)
