My dear Anneliese,

I was so glad to get your letter yesterday. It is years since I wrote a letter to you and thought you had perhaps forgotten me because of my neglect.

If it isn’t too late I would like to thank you very much for the card and centrepiece you sent to me last Christmas. Do not think that because I haven’t written to you that I haven’t thought of you. I have thought about you a lot and wondered how you and your family and fiancé were faring, and not that I know you have had trouble I am more than sorry that I have been lazy and neglected you for such a long time.

Like you, I have had a wonderful holiday in Switzerland. Last June I was in Luzern and then in Lugano! The flowers in the meadows were lovely then, and one day while I was at Luzern I took a trip into the southern tip of your Schwarzwald to St. Blasien. I did want to write to you then but hadn’t your address. I wonder if you did any of the trips from Lugano that I did. Among mine were –

• Milan
• Como, visiting Villa Carlotta and Bellagio and the Villa D’Este.
• Maggiore visiting Pallanza, Stresa and Isola Bella.
• Gandria.
• San Salvatore.

I will see if I can find any snaps you might like.

I’m so glad you have seen “One Night of Love“, and I’m certain you would enjoy it as much as I did. It was shown in Scarborough at the “Futurist“. Do you remember going there?

You will be pleased to be with your old firm again. I am still in the Health Department and have been put on the permanent staff now and if I stay until I am sixty I shall get a pension, but I hope I don’t – stay there.

Thank you ever so much for telling me about the chance to come to Berlin. I don’t feel I can give up this job, but I should love to come. Janet is still training to be a nurse and Betty has a post in a big store in North Finchley, London. I have a friend a few years older than I am and she would love to come. Three or four years ago she spent a holiday at Garmisch Partenkirchen and has ever since wanted to come back to Germany. She has been busy studying German and last Summer she met for conversation a Mr. Scholl who said he was an officer in the German War Office and who went to Japan after leaving England. Marie usually goes to the post office as telegraphist during the Summer months and has the opportunity again, but would put that aside for Berlin. Do you think the lady would like to write direct to my friend? This is her address –

The summer you were at Scalby Marie was at Blackpool Post Office, but I am not sure if you went to her home and met her sister Alice. Their house was near a stream and the garden lovely. I’ll give you a sketch and perhaps you will remember –

The family now live at the extreme south of Scarborough. Marie would like to hear soon so that she can make arrangements at the Post Office.

I must stop now, thanking you again for writing and for telling me of this chance to come to Berlin, and this time I do promise to write to you again soon.

in a short time you’ll be together with Richard and you’ll be glad to see him again.

We left this morning at 10 ¾ ^h. Now we are sitting in a nice restaurant at the Müggelsee in the East of Berlin. The weather is very sunny and fine and I’m feeling rather well. – Hope you’ve had a good journey. All the best for the new term
