<p>A study of men and women from Finland showed that resveratrol is likely to operate the same way in humans. “Resveratrol makes you look like a trained athlete without the training,” said Johan Auwerx, one of the lead researchers from the Institute in France.</p>
<p>What’s more, resveratrol protected mice from gaining weight and developing the symptoms of diabetes and obesity. The benefits included a heightened sensitivity to insulin, which is the key to maintaining your ideal weight and avoiding diseases like diabetes.</p>
<p>While more research is needed to determine how much resveratrol you need to get the same results, you can easily start by getting more resveratrol from your diet. If you’re not a fan of red wine, resveratrol is also in:</p>

<p>If you are having difficulty losing weight even after dieting and exercising more, you are not alone. Over the years, I have helped probably thousands of people with the same problem, but I am finding this scenario to be much more common now than in the past. What I want you to know is that when you’ve tried everything and weight loss or lowering of blood sugar or lipids seems impossible, it could be that environmental toxins are disrupting your body.</p>
<p>Some pesticides, for instance, have been linked with suboptimal thyroid function and others to insulin resistance (IR). Certain pesticides that haven’t even been used for years, like DDT, are still a problem because they are so persistent in the environment, and from there can get into our bodies.<span id="more-126"></span></p>
<p>Researchers call these substances persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The insecticide, dieldrin, is an example. This organochlorine pesticide was used on cotton and corn from the 1950s until 1970. And although its use was banned on crops in 1974, it was still used for termite control until it was finally banned by the EPA completely in 1987. Because it is tightly bound to soil and it evaporates very slowly, dieldrin persists in the environment even though it’s no longer used.</p>
<p>So how does dieldrin affect us today? Plants absorb it from the soil, and water runoff carries the soil with the chemical into water supplies. When we eat plants grown in soil still contaminated with dieldrin, it enters our bodies. We can also get it from the flesh of animals eating contaminated plants or fish living in contaminated waters.</p>
<p>After being consumed, dieldrin is then stored in our body fat. And here’s the problem: dieldrin may be linked to disruption in the thyroid hormones, T4 and TSH. One study found that women with significantly high dieldrin in their blood had decreased T4 levels and increased TSH.</p>
<p>This is exactly what is seen in a condition known as subclinical hypothyroidism. The body is still making thyroid hormone, but levels are lowered and so the person will start to see the symptoms of lowered thyroid, like weight gain and being cold, even with only moderately skewed levels.</p>
<p>In the study mentioned above, blood levels of dieldrin were significantly high in the hypothyroid of women with disrupted thyroid hormones compared to those with normal thyroid levels. People do not realize there are many environmental pollutants that have this same effect.</p>
<p>People with high levels of POPs like organochlorine pesticides and PCBs are more likely to develop IR as well. And down the road, there is an increased risk of high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and heart disease. And sure enough, the link has now been made between POPs and diabetes.</p>
<p>So what is the solution to this problem? We have to try to reduce our exposures as much as possible by drinking water that has been purified with a good filtration system (reverse osmosis systems remove the most contaminants) and eating certified organic foods. This can help reduce any further pesticide load, but obviously does nothing to address the pollutants that permeate our soils and water from years past.</p>
<p>We can however help our body remove existing pesticides from our tissues by supplying nutrients and other substances that either promote detoxification enzymes in the body or that directly help remove toxic substances.</p>
<p>Glutathione is one of the primary detoxification enzymes in the body. It needs a steady supply of the amino acid cysteine (found in eggs, whey, and cabbage family vegetables), plus trace minerals like selenium and zinc, and B vitamins to prevent a build up homocysteine. Several supplement manufacturers make products that combine these nutrients to support internal production of glutathione.</p>
<p>However, since many pesticides tend to reside in the fatty components of our body, they can be very difficult to remove, and so far, the only effective way to remove them is through sweating, with the use of saunas for instance. Far infrared saunas are a new type of sauna technology that has been researched in Japan. This type of sauna is reported to be even more effective in removing toxic substances than traditional saunas because the rays penetrate deeper into the tissue. But any form of sweating is helpful, even sweating from exercise.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, weight and blood sugar management issues are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to health problems from environmental pollutants. Many of the substances are neurotoxic, and some suppress our immune system. So start doing what you can today to reduce the effects of pesticides on your health –and be aware that the research is really starting to explode on this topic.</p>
<p>We will be hearing more and more on this important topic, but as our knowledge progresses, I am sure we will also see new and improved products and technologies to help us remove these extremely harmful substances from our bodies.</p>

Worried about losing your eyesight in old-age?</p>
<p>Age-related macular degeneration, (AMD) affects more Americans than glaucoma and cataracts combined. As you grow older, your risk increases dramatically.</p>
<p>Fortunately, there’s plenty you can do to prevent it from happening to you. You’re about to learn a few simple steps you can take to avoid it.</p>
<p>Two new studies have shown that age-related macular degeneration can be prevented through a diet containing the right amount of a few simple nutrients.<span id="more-123"></span></p>
<p>In the first study, researchers evaluated 4,519 people aged 60 to 80. Patients were first assessed for signs of macular degeneration. If they had it, the researchers then determined how far it had progressed. Patients also completed a food questionnaire that measured intake of certain vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients such as <strong>fatty acids</strong>.</p>
<p>The researchers found that people who ate more fish — more than two medium servings per week or more than one serving of broiled or baked fish — were least likely to have the disease.</p>
<p>A second team of researchers analyzed data from 7,752 people taking part in a large national study between 1988 and 1994. Eleven percent of the patients had AMD. Here they found that<strong> vitamin D </strong>was associated with reduced risk of early AMD, but not advanced AMD.</p>
<p>When participants were split into five groups based on the level of vitamin D in the blood, those in the highest group had a 40% lower risk of early AMD than those in the lowest group. Vitamin D may cut the risk of early age-related macular degeneration by reducing inflammation or preventing blood vessel growth in the retina.</p>
<p>While these new studies are helpful, they don’t tell the whole story. There are a number of other essential nutrients that can also reduce the risk of AMD and improve your eyesight.</p>
<p><strong>Lutein and zeaxanthin</strong> are carotenoids that go hand in hand to stave off AMD. They are the most potent combination of carotenoids we know of. Lutein and zeaxanthin are naturally present in the retina, and highly concentrated in the macula.</p>
<p>Multivitamins often include only vitamin A and beta-carotene. Some manufacturers don’t realize the importance of mixed carotenoids. Others don’t include them to keep costs down. Make sure to look at the label of your multivitamin. It should say, “mixed carotenoids” or list carotenoids separately.</p>
<p>People with higher concentrations of these two carotenoids in the retina tend not to develop AMD because they increase the density of macular pigment. The higher the density, the more protection your eyes have.</p>
<p><strong>Tocopherols </strong>(types of vitamin E) are another mixture of potent eye protectors. Tocopherols are powerful free radical destroyers. JAMA published a study which proved that increased intake of these nutrients lowered the risk of AMD.</p>
<p>The best way to get tocopherols is as a mix. There are four types of tocopherols. Look for supplements that say, “mixed tocopherols.” I recommend 400 IU of mixed tocopherols a day.</p>
<p>By upping your intake of these key nutrients now, you’ll go a long way to protect yourself from the most common cause of vision loss in old age.</p>

<p><strong></strong>“Wherever flaxseed becomes a regular food item among the people, there will be better health”, said Mahatma Gandhi. He was right. The true nature of flax as a health food has been known for centuries. In the 8th Century, Charlemagne considered flax so essential for health that he actually passed laws requiring its use. Flax was one of the original medicines, used by Hippocrates himself.</p>
<p>Flaxseeds and flaxseed oil are one of the best sources on the planet for the important <strong>omega-3</strong> fatty acid called <em>alpha-linolenic acid</em>. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is considered an essential fatty acid because the body can’t make it — it has to be obtained from the diet. Flaxseed oil can help protect against cardiovascular disease, cancer, arthritis, and many other degenerative diseases. And though it’s primarily a source of omega-3, the oil has the virtue of containing some other fatty acids as well, notably some omega-6’s and some heart healthy omega-9’s, providing a nice fatty acid balance.<span id="more-119"></span></p>
<p>There is a caveat on this, however. The ALA found in flax and flax oil is only one of three omega-3 fats, the other two being the long-chain fatty acids known as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). The latter two are only found for the most part in animal foods particularly cold water fish like salmon.</p>
<p>Truth be told, they’re the superstars of the omega-3 family, though the ALA in flax has plenty of health benefits as well (such as being anti-inflammatory). The good news is that the body can make DHA and EPA from the ALA in flax; the bad news is that it does a really bad job of it, converting only about 5-10% of the ALA to those longer chain omegas that are found naturally in fish and fish oil.</p>
<p>What to do, what to do? Flaxseed and flaxseed oil are the go-to source for omega-3’s if you’re a vegetarian. And if you want to get the special benefits of EPA and DHA without taking fish oil (or eating fish), just make sure to take at least a tablespoon a day of flaxseed oil. That way, even at the low “conversion” rate you’ll still be getting about a gram or so of the “fish oil” omegas.</p>
<p><strong>More than Just Omega-3’s</strong></p>
<p>The benefits of flax are not limited to the omega-3 content — not by a long shot. The oil, and especially the seeds, is a great source of something called lignans which have a whole host of health benefits of their own. Lignans have a protective effect against cancer — especially those that are hormone-sensitive like breast, uterine, and prostate cancer.</p>
<p>The effect of flaxseed lignans on breast cancer cells has been the subject of a fair amount of positive research. In one study, flaxseed was shown to have the potential to reduce tumor growth in patients with breast cancer.</p>
<p>In this study, patients consumed a muffin with 25 grams of flaxseed (or a “placebo” muffin of the same size without the added flaxseed). The researchers noted that daily intake of 25 g flaxseed (about 3-4 tablespoons) can significantly reduce cell proliferation and increase apoptosis (cell death of cancer cells). The flaxseed also reduced HER2, a protein that increases the aggressiveness of breast cancer.</p>
<p>Researchers have also found that lignans inhibited the growth of human prostate cancer cells in a test tube. Research at Duke University showed that men with prostate cancer who were given 3 tablespoons of flaxseed per day and a low fat diet had decreased cancer cell growth. And lignans intefere with the production of a nasty testosterone metabolite (DHT, dihydrotestosterone) which is partly responsible for hair loss and benign prostate hyperplasia (the condition that makes men over 40 have to go to the bathroom a lot at night).</p>
<p>Flax promotes cardiovascular and colon health, can boost immunity, nourishes your skin, and helps stabilize blood sugar. Because the lignans in flax are actually phytoestrogens (weak estrogenic compounds from plants), they may help relieve menopausal symptoms. In fact, in one study, flaxseed was as effective as hormone replacement therapy in reducing mild menopausal symptoms in menopausal women.</p>
<p>The flaxseeds, but obviously not the oil, also contain another huge benefit: soluble fiber. You get all the goodies of the oil plus the fiber, when you eat the seeds. They’re ideal for baking, for sprinkling on salads, and for adding to cereals and smoothies — but you need to break the hard outer coating, because the whole seeds can’t be digested.</p>
<p><strong>What to Look For</strong></p>
<p>Barlean’s Organic Oils –the nation’s top producer of high quality flaxseed products — makes a terrific product called Forti-Flax, which you can use right out of the jar without having to do any grinding. Four tablespoons of Forti-Flax will give you 6 grams of fiber, 3 grams of omega-3’s, and a host of lignans and other beneficial phytochemicals — as well as provide the same amount of flaxseed used in the above-mentioned breast cancer study. And in addition to all the other good stuff, flaxseeds are also anti-inflammatory and have antioxidant properties as well.</p>
<p>Some high quality flaxseed oils like Barlean’s Lignan Flax Oil have been cold-processed to retain an especially high lignan content. They can be found in the refrigerated section of your health food store. And remember to never cook with the oil — cooking damages the delicate omega-3 fats which don’t stand up to heat at all. Just keep your flax oil in the fridge and take it as a supplement or use it on salads or already cooked vegetables.</p>

<p>Researchers don’t know why processed milk products increase the risk of Parkinson’s disease in men. Epidemiologists do have theories on milk’s link to other diseases, however. Dr. Samuel Epstein, M.D., is professor emeritus of Environmental and Occupational Medicine at the University of Illinois School of Public Health. He also wrote the book, “What’s In Your Milk?” This expose shows how the industry has covered up the dangers of drinking milk from cows treated with genetically engineered recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH). Milk from rBGH-treated cows, according to Dr. Epstein, poses a significant health risk to humans and appears to be linked to breast, colon and prostate cancers.</p>
<p>Raw, unprocessed milk is rapidly gaining popularity among health-conscious consumers. Many states are outlawing the sales of raw milk. They say it poses a health hazard to consumers with weak immune systems, but demand persists. Members of the raw foods community, for instance, use raw milk and active cultures to make their own kefir (fermented raw milk) at home. Kefir offers numerous health benefits and is a “living” food teeming with beneficial microorganisms.</p>

<p>The vast majority of headaches are related to emotional stress, toxicity (just ask anyone who has experienced a hangover!), and/or structural (and body usage) issues. They may be painful and annoying, but most headaches are not emergencies that require immediate medical attention.*</p>
<p>With that said, here is a plan of action you can safely apply in five minutes or less that may help your head feel better.<span id="more-114"></span></p>
<p>Go get a glass of good quality room temperature water and squeeze the juice of half a lemon into the water. Drink the water.</p>
<p>Know that it is your intention to heal and to feel better. Believe that this can happen for you over the next few minutes.</p>
<p>Put a drop of LAVENDER oil on the following spots: the top of the back of the neck, the center of the forehead, and both temples (make sure to stay away from the eyes).</p>
<p>Take off your shoes and socks; lie down on your back with your knees bent, so that the bottoms of your feet are lying flat on the ground (if you can do this outside on the grass, so much the better).</p>
<p>Close your eyes.</p>
<p>As you do this, RECALL or IMAGINE a time before you had this headache — a time when you felt fantastic! Get as specific and vivid as you can with your “felt sense” of this.</p>
<p>Keep your eyes closed and put both of your hands on your lower belly. Begin to take some slow gentle deep breaths so that your hands go UP toward the sky on your inhale. Breathe in through your nose and then let the air out through your mouth by simply opening the back of your throat.</p>
<p>Between each breath, smile INWARDLY with your mouth and eyes, and SAY (either silently or aloud) “Alert Mind, Calm Body”.</p>
<p>Simply be with your breath. If your mind wanders, just notice that and then gently but firmly bring your attention back to the breath.</p>
<p>Do this for the next three minutes.</p>
<p>Now move your left hand so that it is behind your head (your head is now resting in the palm of your left hand).</p>
<p>Put the pad of your right middle finger right on the center of your pubic bone (the bone that is just above your genital area). Use moderate pressure. Continue breathing with your hands in this position for another 30 seconds.</p>
<p>Now allow yourself to become aware of something that you COULD feel grateful for … and let yourself FEEL the gratitude as you take another deep breath … Repeat this two more times.</p>
<p>Now gently and slowly allow your eyes to open and return to your day.</p>
<p>Unless you have an allergy to lemon or lavender, this protocol is completely safe and will often help a great deal.</p>
<p>It would take more space than we have in this article to explain all the reasons WHY this protocol is so helpful, but don’t let that stop you from giving it a try.</p>
<p>*If you have a headache with any one of the following warning signs, seek medical attention immediately: Recent head trauma, especially associated with any loss of consciousness; fever of over 104°; vomiting that lasts more than 4 hours; diarrhea that lasts more than 3 days; ANY change in vision; unexplained weight loss; bleeding; high blood pressure; shortness of breath; confusion; dizziness; loss of balance; slurred speech.</p>

<p>The first step to stop physical aging is to recognize the changes taking place. When youre a child, you can easily measure the physical changes as you grow taller and gain weight. But once you become an adult, physical aging is more difficult to monitor because changes arent as dramatic. But that doesnt mean they dont exist&#8230;<br />
As the years go by your pants fit a little tighter. Lifting those boxes of holiday decorations out of the attic is harder each year. And eventually for many people, taking the stairs gets them out of breath by the 2nd floor! But that doesnt mean you have to accept it&#8230;<br />
<img class="alignleft" style="float: left;" src="http://7healthtips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/slowaging.gif" alt="" width="231" height="245" />You can stop and even reverse all of these changes. Effectively address the physical signs of aging and your &#8220;health span&#8221; will soar and youll look and feel younger. Today youll learn specifically how to:<br />

<p>The first physical sign of aging is muscle. People who age well, who seem to be far younger than their years, are well muscled. This healthy muscle protects your body from aches and pains, disease and other age related ailments&#8230;<br />
Muscle loss begins at about age 30. From then on, you lose an average of 3 pounds of muscle every decade. Most people feel a bit weaker but for the most part, they dont notice any difference in size. Why? Because this muscle is replaced with<strong> <em>fat</em></strong>.<br />
But it doesnt have to be. Muscle loss is preventable and completely <strong><em>reversible</em></strong>. Ive seen patients of all ages regain <strong><em>100%</em> </strong>of their youthful muscle mass! The Evergreen Project is currently studying the effects of muscle building on aging. Researchers are monitoring exercisers between the ages of 65 and 94. They have found that the more muscle the participants have, the longer their life spans. They also have fewer illnesses and better mental function.<br />
To make a big difference, muscle-building exercise must engage the biggest muscle groups in your body: the quadriceps, the gluteus muscles, and the hamstrings. Perform exercises that flex and extend the hip joint. <strong><em>Do exercises that provide resistance through a broad range of motion at the hip joint</em></strong>. This can include weight training, bicycling, stair-steppers and elliptical machines, or walking up and down stairs.</p>
<h3>Fat is a Negative Sign of Aging</h3>
<p>Increasing body fat is the second physical sign of aging. If you dont act to prevent it, fat slowly but relentlessly moves into your cells and pads your waist for no reason other than age. But again, this shift is not inevitable. You can manage it if you know how.<br />
Several tests can identify and track this change in fat. The most accurate test is the hydrostatic body fat test. It works like this: you get into a tank of water and go under. Test takers record your weight while youre underwater. You can get a hydrostatic test at some health clubs, university health centers and hospitals. You can also measure fat yourself with a set of calipers. Whats a youthful body fat range for a man? 10-14%; for a woman it is 15-25%.<br />
So you need to drop a few pounds of fat? Dont jump on the treadmill just yet. Fat loss starts with adequate protein.<strong><em> Over-consume protein, and minimize everything else</em></strong>. This is the one piece of advice where I get the most resistance. If you can have some faith and try it, youll see too how much easier it makes losing weight and achieving a more youthful body.<br />
Finally, you need to perform effective fat burning exercise. Short bursts of exercise burn fat best. Short bursts will use energy from carbohydrates stored in muscle rather than from fat. Carbs are capable of burning energy at a much higher rate. You then burn much more fat for energy during the recovery period as you replenish the carbs. Short bursts of exercise are better for your heart and lungs too.</p>
<h3>Build Strong Bones that are Resistant to Age</h3>
<p>Bone loss is the third physical sign of aging. Just like muscle, you lose bone every year. In fact, research shows adults lose 1% of bone mass annually. With loss of bone minerals, your bones become lighter, more porous, weaker and at greater risk for fracture.<br />
Unfortunately, ordinary X-rays cant detect bone loss in its early stages. A bone must lose at least a full quarter of its weight before a standard X-ray can see the problem. Instead, have a bone mineral density test (BMD) done. The best BMDs test the bones of your lower spine and hip. These areas are at higher risk for fracture as you age.<br />
If your BMD detects trouble, you can increase bone density and strength with weight-bearing exercise such as walking, bicycling, swimming or weight training. Focus on increasing intensity in all of these exercises. Taking calcium will have little effect on this hormone-driven loss of bone with age. You can help reverse the process with the only vitamin that is actually a hormone, vitamin D. For maximal anti-aging preservation of bone, take 400 IU of vitamin D daily.</p>
<h3>Boost Your Lung Capacity for Longevity</h3>
<p>As the years pass, your lung volume decreases making lung capacity the fourth and one of the best signs of physical age. Your doctor can give you a pulmonary function test (PFT) to check your lung capacity. This test is not invasive or dangerous. I find it very valuable at my Wellness Center to monitor the benefits of exercise at reversing the loss of lung volume that afflicts so many older people.<br />
I have found that the right physical challenge can reverse this loss of lung volume. For fast results, use a progressive exercise plan like my PACE® program. The idea behind PACE® is to advance the intensity of your exercise gradually through time. As simple as this seems, very few people do it. But this is what makes all exercise effective. <h3>Build an Ageless Heart</h3>
<p>Many men and women dont realize somethings wrong with their heart until its too late &#8212; when theyre in the emergency room after a heart attack. Yet the real problem started years earlier. You can measure this gradual loss of heart capacity. Its your fifth physical sign of age.<br />
You can easily gauge your heart with a resting and recovery heart rate. Lets do resting first. Locate your pulse, anywhere an artery passes close to the skin will do. You can use your wrist, neck, temple, or top of the foot. Most people use the wrist. If you cant feel the pulse in your wrist, place the same two fingers just to the side of your Adam&#8217;s apple, in the soft hollow area at the side of your neck.<br />
Your pulse should have a steady, regular rhythm. Your heart rate will increase slightly when you deeply inhale and drop slightly when you exhale. Count the number of beats for 15 seconds, then multiply by 4 to get the beats per minute. See how you rank using the chart below.<br />

<h3>How Fit Is Your Heart?</h3>
<p>Now check your recovery heart rate. Its a good gauge of heart fitness. To start, walk out and get the mail, or walk around in your house for a couple of minutes. Then take your pulse. Remember the number; its your normal activity heart rate.<br />
For the next step, begin cardio exercise. Gradually increase the level of intensity in your work effort. Then, at the peak of your intensity measure your heart rate again. Next, decrease your intensity back to normal, check your heart rate until its the same as it was when you went to get the glass of water. The amount of time from peak activity back to your normal-activity heart rate is your recovery time. The fitter you are, the faster your heart rate will recover back to normal.<br />
If you dont do much short burst cardiovascular exercise, your cardiovascular system probably needs some work. Heres what to do. When youre performing your PACE® short bursts of exercise, try to get your heart rate within the target range for your age. (These ranges use the maximum heart rate of 220 minus your age.) You can start at 60% of your maximum heart rate. After youve worked on PACE® for a few weeks, work up to 80% of your maximal heart rate.</p>
<h3>Strength and Speed Arent Just For Athletes&#8230;</h3>
<p>Slowing down and growing weaker are natural parts of the aging process. In fact, losing strength and quickness are the sixth and seventh physical signs of aging. But with consistent exercise, you can turn this around. For example, 21 frail elderly subjects recently took part in an 11-week exercise program. After the program, the men showed an improvement in balance, strength, and physical ability, making them less likely to fall.5<br />
The old school approach to exercise is still my preference for restoring strength and quickness. Remember calisthenics? Theyre exercises consisting of simple body movements without weights or equipment. Calisthenics was born out of gymnastics.6 The word calisthenics comes from the Greek words &#8216;kallos&#8217; for beauty and &#8216;thenos&#8217; for strength. The purpose is to use your own body for resistance. Heres how to do some of the basic exercises&#8230;<br />
Essential Calisthenics for Speed, Strength &amp; Fitness<br />
<strong>Half sit-ups</strong>: With your hands on your hips, lift your upper torso off the ground slightly. Your middle/lower back will remain on the floor. Lower gently and repeat.<br />
<strong>Push-ups</strong>: Start face down on floor, palms against floor under shoulders, toes curled up against floor. Push up with arms keeping a straight line from head through toes. Lower to within a few inches of floor and repeat. This exercise is great for your entire upper body.<br />
<strong>Knee bends</strong>: Start with your feet shoulder width apart and arms at your side. Lower yourself by bending your knees until your thighs are parallel to the floor, rising up on your toes, while swinging your arms forward until they are parallel to the floor. Reverse this motion and return to your original starting position. Repeat.<br />
<strong>Jump squats</strong>: Start with your body crouched, feet together, arms at your sides, head straight and level. From this position, quickly straighten your legs and jump upward as high as you can, simultaneously extending your arms and reaching overhead. Once you have landed, return to your original starting position, taking care not to lose your balance throughout the exercise.<br />
<strong>Inverted bicycle</strong>: Lie on your back and place your hands under your hips. Lift your legs and begin moving your legs in a cycling movement in the air above your head. Keep your legs moving.<br />
<strong>Scissors</strong>: Lay on your back. Lift your feet 6 inches off the floor. Open and close both legs about 3 feet apart, keeping your legs straight and off the floor. Keep your legs moving.<br />
Get started on your heart and lung empowering exercise program today. Youll have to build up to some of the exercises. Begin nice and easy. Should you feel any pain, dizziness, or shortness of breath, slow down. If youll try them, the age-defying results will surprise you. In just weeks youll begin to see a change in your body. The verb &#8220;discover&#8221; is actually not to my credit, by the way; Mother Nature created this natural medicine eons ago, and it&#8217;s been present in trace amounts in aquatic ecosystems for over a billion years. In this article, I&#8217;m going to reveal the name of this natural medicine, what health benefits it provides to us, and how to get some right now. But first, before revealing the name, I want to share some of the numerous health benefits with you so you get the full picture of just how significant this substance can be in enhancing your health. <p>Next comes omega-3 fatty acids, which have proven to be miraculous, too, in terms of preventing cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, depression and much more. Plus, you can get these from plant sources (like chia seeds or flax seeds) or animal source (fish oil, krill oil, etc.).</p>

<p>And where does your body need healthy fat? Almost everywhere! Every cell in your body, for example, contains fat molecules in its membrane. And did you know that your brain is made of a whopping 60 percent fat? It&#8217;s true: Your brain is mostly fat and water. So does it make sense to protect your brain with natural antioxidants that can cross the blood/brain barrier and protect your brain cells from oxidative damage? <p>Are you taking enough astaxanthin? I took astaxanthin on and off for a couple of years at a very low dosage: 2mg or 4mg. And I never really noticed much of an effect. At that level (which is just four tiny gelcaps per day, they&#8217;re the size of BBs), all kinds of benefits started to kick in. I was able to run farther, exercise with greater intensity, and yet wake up the next morning with surprisingly little soreness. It was like my body was suddenly functioning at a fitness level way beyond what I was used to.</p>

<p>Sure, I take a lot of natural supplements. And yes, I don&#8217;t eat oxidizing fried foods, or trans fatty acids, or sugar, and I don&#8217;t take pharmaceuticals of any kind, and yes, my blood flows like water because I gobble a lot of fish oils, and I get all kinds of vitamin D from the sun. So sure, I have a lot of factors going into healthy blood (astaxanthin certainly isn&#8217;t the only one) that creates this athletic effect, but the point is I&#8217;m only human, just like you, and if I can make my cardiovascular system pump along effortlessly, filling my cells with seemingly unlimited oxygen during exercise, then you can experience similar benefits. We&#8217;re 99.98% genetically identical, after all. My heart is pretty much the same as your heart. The only difference is what we choose to feed it!</p>
<p>Now don&#8217;t get me wrong, in no way am I saying that after you pop a couple of astaxanthin pills, you will turn into Superman and you can start tearing up the hills of your local hiking path. The benefits of astaxanthin are very real, and I have no need to exaggerate them, so here are some things you need to know about astaxanthin to make sure you understand what it can and can&#8217;t do for you:</p>
<p>• It doesn&#8217;t work overnight. I took it for 30 days before I really started to see significant results. You probably won&#8217;t feel any difference for a few days after you start taking astaxanthin. It takes time for the carotenoids to find their way to your tissues. Once you begin to feel some benefits, those benefits will typically increase for several weeks, so you&#8217;ll feel better as you continue taking the astaxanthin. At some point, the benefits will level off and as long as you keep taking the astaxanthin, you&#8217;ll stay there, experiencing those ongoing benefits.</p>
<p>• Astaxanthin won&#8217;t counteract unhealthy habits like smoking cigarettes, eating fried foods or drinking a fat-laden Starbucks &#8220;coffee&#8221; that&#8217;s really more like a 600-calorie milkshake. Don&#8217;t take astaxanthin as an excuse to pursue unhealthy foods or lifestyle choices (like smoking).</p>
<p>• Don&#8217;t go overboard with your exercise in an unsafe way. Always work with a qualified health practitioner concerning ANY changes in your exercise or diet. Ease into your exercise slowly and carefully. It&#8217;s better to slowly ramp up to more exercise over time than to injure yourself because you got overly excited and went too far&#8230;</p>
<p>• Astaxanthin needs to be taken throughout the day for maximum effect. I take 4mg every 4 hours. That way, I&#8217;m getting a healthy dose of astaxanthin at every hour of the day.</p>
<p>• Always take astaxanthin with healthy fats. Since it&#8217;s fat-soluble, it needs fat to hitch a ride to your body&#8217;s cells.</p>
<p>• Remember that if you eat fried foods (including so-called &#8220;healthy&#8221; snack chips fried at high temperatures), you will &#8220;use up&#8221; a lot of the antioxidant power in astaxanthin, leaving less to help the rest of your body. Unhealthy foods are often highly oxidizing, so even though I don&#8217;t recommend eating fried foods, if you do, you may want to consider taking an extra astaxanthin capsule at the same time to protect your body from the fried foods.</p>
<p>• Not to make this too scatalogical, but at 16mg per day, astaxanthin will turn your poo slightly red, just like when you drink beet juice. Drink some chlorophyll too (which turns your poo green) next December, and you can poo in vibrant holiday colors! (Only recommended for the easily amused&#8230;)</p>
<p>• There&#8217;s virtually no way to overdose on astaxanthin. Remember, this isn&#8217;t a drug. It&#8217;s something that&#8217;s been in the natural food supply for millions of years. The studies that have been done show virtually no toxicity even at ridiculously high doses. However, based on what I&#8217;ve read it seems that the benefits of astaxanthin reach a point of diminishing returns after about 20mg per day for a human being, so that&#8217;s why I take 16mg a day: It&#8217;s enough to generate wonderful benefits, but I&#8217;m not going overboard with it. In one study, they gave 30mg per day to a horse! So probably, it&#8217;s a fair guess to say you would need less than a horse. The lighter you are, the less you need, of course. I weigh 190 and take 16mg. If you only weigh 110 pounds, you might only want to take 8mg or 12mg per day. Even 4mg per day produces some benefits, by the way.</p>

<p>You can also just buy astaxanthin at your local health food store, of course. Or you might have other online retailers if you&#8217;re living in the U.K., Australia, Canada or another country. Frankly, it doesn&#8217;t matter to me where you get your astaxanthin, just make sure of one thing, which is VERY important: Always by &#8220;natural&#8221; astaxanthin, not &#8220;synthetic astaxanthin.&#8221;</p>
<p>You see, there&#8217;s a lot of synthetic astaxanthin on the market, too, and it&#8217;s made from &#8212; if you can believe this &#8212; petroleum! It doesn&#8217;t provide any health benefits, by the way, just like synthetic vitamin E or synthetic B vitamins. They&#8217;re all garbage, if you ask me. Only the natural stuff really works to protect and enhance your health. So wherever you buy astaxanthin, make sure you&#8217;re buying only natural astaxanthin.</p>
<p><strong>Which sources of astaxanthin I really trust</strong><br />
Another note: As a journalist, I&#8217;ve toured the Cyanotech facility on the Big Island in Hawaii, and I&#8217;ve seen their quality first-hand. I&#8217;ve met the people, photographed the processing facility machines and watched how they clean, dry and pack both astaxanthin and spirulina. So I&#8217;ve seen it all first hand at Cyanotech, and I know they do a really great job. I have NOT seen any other facilities making astaxanthin, so I can&#8217;t say whether or not any other companies are doing as good a job as Cyanotech. Therefore, I personally only buy Cyanotech&#8217;s astaxanthin because I know I can trust it. I also know they batch test their products to make sure they don&#8217;t contain heavy metals or other freaky contaminants.</p>
<p>I just can&#8217;t say whether other manufacturers are doing a good job. They may very well do so, but I haven&#8217;t had the opportunity to tour their facilities yet. Perhaps after this story runs, I&#8217;ll be invited to other manufacturers and I&#8217;ll be able to publish a follow up report to let you know what I find. One thing you can rest assured of, however: I have zero financial ties with Cyanotech, Vitacost or any other company mentioned in this review, because that&#8217;s my policy of remaining independent and objective, and I stick to it!</p>
<p><strong>Why the FDA wants to censor this</strong><br />
The FDA, of course, wants to censor this information outright. They don&#8217;t want consumers learning the truth about how natural astaxanthin makes anti-inflammatory medications virtually obsolete, or how it operates as a natural sunscreen, or an exercise endurance enhancer. They don&#8217;t want you to know that taking astaxanthin greatly reduces your chances of ever being diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, or that it prevents the oxidation of your cells from eating fried foods or junk foods.</p>
<p>And you know what? If I were selling astaxanthin, I&#8217;d be in jail right now. The FDA would raid my warehouse (if I had one), confiscate my inventory (if I had any), seize my product literature (if I had some) and confiscate my bank account profits from selling the product (if I had any). But since I don&#8217;t have any of that and, in fact, I earn absolutely nothing from telling you these obvious truths about astaxanthin, the FDA is at a complete loss to take any action to censor me and thereby prevent you from learning the truth about this amazing nutrient.</p>
<p>To put it simply: I&#8217;m not regulated by the FDA, since I sell no foods, drugs, supplements or other such products. As a result, I&#8217;m free to tell you the truth about astaxanthin and other natural medicines in a way that the manufacturers of these products simply cannot (because they&#8217;re muzzled by the FDA, which is of course a criminal operation engaged in blatant censorship campaigns designed to keep the public ignorant about nutrition in order to protect the profits of Big Pharma).</p>
<p>So, in essence, the facts that astaxanthin eases arthritis pain, prevents Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, speeds recovery from exercise, boosts physical endurance, prevents cancer, stabilizes blood sugar and protects the entire cardiovascular system are things that you&#8217;re not supposed to know, you know. Forbidden knowledge and all that. The FDA has decided that the American population should not have access to this information, thereby ensuring that consumers don&#8217;t know they have options for their health. When consumers don&#8217;t realize they have options, they default to taking dangerous (yet profitable) pharmaceuticals. And that, of course, is the whole point of the FDA&#8217;s campaign of censorship in the first place.</p>
<p><strong>Hey Health Ranger, where are your scientific citations?</strong><br />
By the way, sometimes people ask me why I don&#8217;t include more citations of the scientific studies supporting what I&#8217;m sharing in these articles. The answer to that is simple: The presence (or lack thereof) of a &#8220;scientific&#8221; citation does not change the nature of what astaxanthin is already and what it does for your body. In other words, including a citation doesn&#8217;t make astaxanthin work any better, and excluding a citation doesn&#8217;t make astaxanthin work any worse. It is what it is, and it&#8217;s been around far longer than humans, or researchers, or scientific journals. Natural medicine, in other words, doesn&#8217;t just suddenly start to work after it&#8217;s been publishing in a science journal; it&#8217;s been working for centuries to keep animals, fish and our human ancestors healthy!</p>
<p>After hearing that some people say, &#8220;No, Mike, you&#8217;re supposed to convince me that astaxanthin does all this, and that&#8217;s why you should cite all these scientific studies.&#8221;</p>
<p>Actually, I&#8217;m not here to convince anyone who isn&#8217;t already ready to experience phenomenal health in the first place. Some people will stand in their comfort zones and avoid all the healthy things they could be taking right now &#8212; superfoods, spirulina, vitamin D, fish oils, astaxanthin &#8212; and they&#8217;ll sit there and insist &#8220;I&#8217;m not taking anything until it&#8217;s scientifically proven!&#8221; And before long, they waste away with degenerative disease, dying of cancer, or heart attacks or strokes, all because they wanted 100% absolute proof before they would take a single health supplement that might have prevented their disease. It reminds me of a high school friend who never went to college. A few years back, I asked him why he never went to college. He said that Bill Clinton promised a free college education to every student in America, and he was waiting around until Clinton or some other President made good on that promise.</p>
<p>It just makes you wonder: How long will some people wait around to die, waiting for scientists to proclaim they&#8217;ve discovered what Mother Nature has provided us all along? Anybody who waits for corporate America to tell you how to take care of your health is a fool. There is simply no incentive for any industry (like the sick-care industry) to make you aware of the health benefits of astaxanthin. And teaching people how to prevent cancer is certainly no priority of medical journals, most of which are entirely funded by drug companies that profit from cancer in the first place.</p>

I mean, c&#8217;mon, how hard is it to go online and search for astaxanthin studies, anyway? <p>There, you&#8217;ll see a listing of 9,230 different references to astaxanthin in the scientific literature, including numerous studies about its anti-cancer benefits, antioxidant benefits, prevention of carcinogenesis, and a whole lot more.</p>
<p>Okay, get this: Some people then say, but Mike, you&#8217;re supposed to interpret all those studies for us and tell us what they mean!</p>
<p>And that, my friends, is exactly what this article is doing in the first place: Interpreting the science and boiling it down to everyday language that honestly and openly shares the benefits of astaxanthin.
