The phrase "This Too Shall Pass" came from Jewish wisdom folktale, involving King Solomon. I love the phrase and the story that originated the phrase.

Have you heard of the story? There are many version available but I took the one I found on Wikipedia (as of 23rd April 2009) and made little changes. Here it is:

One day, King Solomon decided to humble Benaiah Ben Yehoyada, his most trusted minister. King Solomon said to him, "Benaiah, there is a certain ring that I want you to bring to me. I wish to wear it for Sukkot which gives you six months to find it."

Benaiah replied, "If it exists anywhere on earth, your majesty, I will find it and bring it to you but what makes the ring so special?"

King Solomon answered, "It has magic powers, if a happy man looks at it, he becomes sad, and if a sad man looks at it, he becomes happy." King Solomon knew that no such ring existed in the world but he wished to give his minister a little taste of humility.

Spring passed, then summer and still Benaiah had no idea where he could find the ring. On the night before Sukkot, he decided to take a walk in one of the poorest quarters of Jerusalem.

He passed by a merchant who had begun to set out the day's wares on a shabby carpet. Benaiah asked, "Have you by any chance heard of a magic ring that makes the happy wearer forget his joy and the broken-hearted wearer forget his sorrows?"

He watched the grandfather take a plain gold ring from his carpet and engrave something on it. When Benaiah read the words on the ring, his face broke out in a wide smile.

That night the entire city welcomed in the holiday of Sukkot with great festivity. King Solomon asked, "Well, my friend, have you found what I sent you after?" All the ministers laughed and Solomon himself smiled. To everyone's surprise, Benaiah held up a small gold ring and declared, "Here it is, your majesty!"

As soon as Solomon read the inscription, the smile vanished from his face. The jeweler had written three Hebrew letters on the gold band: "Gimel, Zayin, Yud" which began the words "Gam Zeh Ya'avor" -- This too shall pass. At that moment Solomon realized that all his wisdom and fabulous wealth and tremendous power were but fleeting things, for one day he would be nothing but dust.

Abraham Lincoln made the phrase and story popular in his "Address Before the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society" speech on September 30, 1859.

It is said, an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: "And this too, shall pass." How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction! - Abraham Lincoln

There is good and there is evil. Right and wrong. Heroes and villains. And if we're blessed with wisdom, then there are glimpses between the cracks of each where light streams through. We wait in silence for these times when sense can be made, when meaningless existence comes into focus, and our purpose presents itself. And if we have the strength to be honest, then what we find there, staring back at us, is our own reflection, bearing witness to the duality of life. And each one of us is capable of both the dark and the light, of good and evil, of either, of all. And destiny, while marching ever in our direction, can be rerouted by the choices we make. By the love we hold onto, and the promises we keep. - Mohinder Suresh (Heroes: Volume 3)

An action-thriller for the summer: "Salt." Lead casting by one of the highest-paid and best-known actress: Angelina Jolie. She's at her best in this film and definitely the perfect casting for the role.

Salt is the female version of Bond, Bourne and McClane. At first, the role was written for Tom Cruise but then it got rewritten for Angelina Jolie. Tom Cruise did not make it because of other projects and the lead character was too close with the "Mission Impossible" lead character.

The story line was well written and the film was well directed too. Probably one of the film that keeps us awake and in suspense until it ends. It's fast moving and there's no dull moment for 1 hour 40 minutes. There are lots of twist and turns too. It will keep you guessing several times and the moment you thought you were right, you are actually not. LOL.

A fun flick for the summer - "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." Although I'm not into fantasy films, this film is worth watching and it is must watch for every Nicolas Cage and Walt Disney fan.

The cast performances are entertaining and the main people behind this film is the same of those from "National Treasure." While I would love to watch "National Treasure" twice, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is not the kind of film I would enjoy watching for second time. It is not great movie but it is also not bad movie.

It has nice combination of comedy, action and humors that will impress both kids and preteens. For adults, they might have hard time to enjoy this film because it has plenty of plot holes. Much more than "Transformers 2" had.

As we all knows from the trailer, the most attractive element of this film is the CGI effects. There are lots of visual effects can be seen in big screen while watching "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." The effects I love the most is the plasma balls and the mirror world during the car chasing scene. Not to forget, I love the part the dragon ring comes alive on the kid's finger. Also, the real life dragon in the China Town looks incredible too. These visual effects are completely better than we had been given through "Dragon Ball Evolution." LOL.

By the way, I do not like the song "Secrets" by OneRepublic when I heard it for the first time few weeks ago. Somehow, while certain part of the song plays in "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," I started to love it. LOL. OneRepublic rocks!

"Knight and Day" features Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz - A charming couple yet the movie is not charming at all. There are only two reason I went for this movie. The first reason - because of Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The second reason - it has good ratings so far. Eventually I found, it's really weird for such movie to receive good ratings.

The script is illogic and not making sense. If it was not because of Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, I would definitely regret for watching this movie. Totally not suitable to be called "Summer action-comedy" flick. I never laughed throughout the movie and neither does anyone in the cinema hall.

Regarding action sequences, there are some but they were ridiculous. Most probably "Knight and Day" should have been classified "action-fantasy" instead of "action-comedy."

I felt the same as I watched "Sherlock Holmes." I thought about leaving the cinema hall. Lucky me, at least the second half got better. I do not think anyone would love this movie unless they loved "Mr and Mrs Smith" (of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie). The only reason these movies does sell is for having two popular leading stars being couples.

Anyway, there's one thing that I really love in this movie. It's filming locations that were set at some places in Austria and Spain. For few minutes, I was focused on the environments rather than what's going on. It's more worth it. :D

Rating: 2/10
