Apple will unveil the next-generation iPhone 5 on 4 October.

According to a typically cryptic invitation sent out to the media on Tuesday, Apple will host an iPhone event at its headquarters in San Francisco next week.

The event is expected to be Tim Cook’s first outing as chief executive since he took over from Steve Jobs on 25 August.

The unveiling is also expected by many to include a simpler version of last year’s iPhone 4 – which has become the best-selling smartphone in the world since its launch in June 2010 – which will allow Apple to attack China’s huge market.

Cook’s appearance would be his first in public since he took over from Jobs, who has been on medical leave since January but fronted three public events for the company until his resignation.

Cook ran the company’s day-to-day operations during Jobs’s previous medical absences in 2004 and 2009, and for the first half of this year. He has been at Apple since 1998 and is credited with turning its manufacturing and supply operations around.

Internet rumours have suggested that the new model will have a slightly larger screen than the existing iPhone 4, and that it may include an NFC (near field communication) chip which would enable it to be used with payment services such as Google’s Wallet service, which launched in the US earlier this week.

That would allow it to compete with Google’s Nexus S phone, released at the end of December, which contains an NFC chip, and other forthcoming phones from handset makers.

Apple’s next-generation iPhone will be on public sale “within weeks” of its official announcement on 4 October, according to US technology site AllThingsD. UK availability and prices have not been announced.

Apple had not returned a request for comment ahead of publication.

Clove.co.uk has announced it will be stocking two of Sony Ericsson’s brand new Xperia handsets. The Xperia Arc S will be arriving tomorrow on September 30 while the Xperia Pro will land on October 6.

You can already get both on pre-order through the site.

At £349.99 the Xperia Arc S is available in white or a snazzy fade-away blue, measures only 8.6mm thick and weighs a mere 117g. Android 2.3 Gingerbread is the operating system of choice here.

Inside it comes fitted with a 1.4 GHz single core Scorpion processor on a turbo charged version of Qualcomm’s famous Snapdragon chipset (MSM8255T), which also features an Adreno 205 graphics processing unit (GPU).

On top of that there’s 320MB of user-available storage space and 512MB of RAM, microSD cards are also supported up to 32GB and an 8GB card ships with the handset.

The camera setup is particularly impressive with an 8-megapixel primary capable of 3D sweep panoramic capture in 720p quality. It also supports video calling.

Visuals are put through a 4.2-inch LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreen with a pixel density of 233 pixels-per-inch (ppi) and running Sony’s Mobile Bravia engine.

Meanwhile, the Xperia Pro will cost £306 for its slide-out Qwerty keyboard charms - that's actually a slightly higher price tag than we previously thought.

The keyboard makes it a bit heavier and thicker but the screen is equally impressive as its Arc S cousin. It uses the same Bravia engine and 480 x 854 pixel resolution but is slightly smaller at 3.7-inches, giving a pixel density of 265ppi.

The Xperia Pro is also Gingerbread-powered and has the same camera setup, memory and card support as the Arc S. Processing power comes from a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon.

We’ve just learned that Apple’s iPhone 5 will be getting a UK release date on October 21.

That’s right, we’ve just been contacted by one of our tipsters who spoke with customer services at O2. The customer service representative told our tipster that the iPhone 5 would be getting release on October 21.

We’ve heard plenty of predictions re: the iPhone 5’s release date. But this is the first time we’ve heard something concrete from inside a UK-based network.

We’ve long suspected an October release for Apple’s fifth-generation iPhone device, but it’s nice to finally get some specifics.

At present, no one is 100 per cent sure on the sort of spec the iPhone 5 will feature. But we’d expect to see a dual core processor, most likely the same as the one in the iPad 2, a larger display (possibly 4-inches), 1GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel camera and 1080p video recording capabilities.

The O2 representative didn’t divulge any additional specifications or news, but confirmed that the release for the iPhone 5, at least at O2 anyway, would be October 21.

So there you have it: the iPhone 5 will be available from O2 on October 21.

iPhone 5 reported to have production issues; apparent October 7 release - Yesterday, Neowin reported that due to a Case-Mate leak, there was a lot of evidence to suggest that Apple would indeed be bringing an iPhone 5 alongside an iPhone 4S.

Today a report by 9to5Mac has shown that once again, the iPhone 5 may be delayed. This time the delay has been said to have been caused by a production issue on one of the lines. What sounds like a small issue could result in shortages in the product and such shortages could last into 2012. With more people anticipating the iPhone 5 than they did the 4, it’s likely going to be an immediate problem upon release.

In better news, the revamped iPhone 4S and the new generation iPhone 5 have been reported to have over 10 million units sitting ready for distribution which may be good news for Apple fans as the rumoured release, October 7, approaches.

The early leaks that the iPhone 5 will come with a teardrop-style design may have been confirmed yesterday as Case-Mate revealed a new case that displayed a teardrop like styling. It’s rumoured that the iPhone 5 will share a similar design to that of the iPad 2 in terms of the aluminum cased back and is said to come loaded with the same A5 dual core processor many have been hoping for. In addition to the design and processor changes, it will apparently come with a larger display and of course, the newest version of the operating system, iOS 5.

Stars Victimized in Bling Ring Burglaries Speak Out - Recently unsealed testimony from a number of young Hollywood stars convinced a Los Angeles Country grand jury to indict five suspects in what had become known in the media as the "Bling Ring" – a series of break-ins to celebrity homes between October 2008 and August 2009 – the Associated Press has learned.

Troubled actress Lindsay Lohan – who would herself be sentenced to jail time two weeks later – told the grand jury that fingerprints the burglars left on her walls left her "unnerved."

"That night I went back to the house, I just felt… so violated and uncomfortable that I literally packed as much stuff as I could," Lohan told the jurors, adding that the break-in represented a violation of the "only private space" in her highly-reported life.

Lohan had a fur coat, two paintings, and jewelry and clothing stolen during the break-in.

"O.C." star Rachel Bilson lost something more personal when her house was burgled – her mother's engagement ring. After the burglary, Bilson told the grand jury, she wouldn't sleep in her bedroom for a month. She said she had been so scared that she considered selling her house.

Orlando Bloom, of the Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean film franchises, lost about a half-million dollars worth of possessions to the Bling Ring, including a collection of watches that he had kept hidden. Anwar al-Awlaki (also spelled Aulaqi; Arabic: أنور العولقي‎ Anwar al-‘Awlaqī; April 22, 1971 – September 30, 2011) was a Yemeni-American^[10] imam who was an engineer and educator by training.^[11]^[12] According to U.S. officials, he was a senior talent recruiter and motivator who was involved with planning operations for the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda.^[3]^[8]^[13]^[14]^[15]^[16] He was implicated in helping to motivate at least three attacks on U.S. soil,^[17] and was the first U.S. citizen to be added to a list of persons approved for targeted killing by the CIA.^[18]^[19]^[20] With a blog, a Facebook page, and many YouTube videos, he had been described as the "bin Laden of the Internet".^[21]^[22] U.S. President Barack Obama described Awlaki as "the leader of external operations for Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula".^[23]

Al-Awlaki reportedly spoke with, trained, and preached to a number of al-Qaeda members and affiliates, including three of the 9/11 hijackers,^[24] alleged Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan,^[25]^[26] and alleged "Christmas Day bomber" Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab;^[27]^[28]^[29] he was also reportedly involved in planning the latter's attack.

According to U.S. officials, al-Awlaki was promoted to the rank of "regional commander" within al-Qaeda in 2009.^[5]^[30] He repeatedly called for jihad against the United States.^[31]^[32] In April 2010, Barack Obama approved Al-Awlaki's targeted killing,^[18]^[19]^[20] an action unsuccessfully challenged by al-Awlaki's father and civil rights groups.^[33]

Al-Awlaki was believed to be in hiding in Southeast Yemen in the last years of his life.^[34] The Yemeni government began trying him in absentia in November 2010, for plotting to kill foreigners and being a member of al-Qaeda, and a Yemenite judge ordered that he be captured "dead or alive".^[34]^[35] U.S. unmanned drones were deployed in Yemen to search for and kill him,^[36] firing at and failing to kill him at least once,^[37] before he was assassinated in a drone attack in Yemen on September 30, 2011.^[38]
