It's been crickets around here.

Lots of good news to report:

-my crotch is 100% better! (Thanks to everyone for their well wishes!)

-nanny is awesome.

-I helped launched a new, crazy company this week at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in NYC. Introducing: Universal Kinetics, Inc. (I did the site, not bad, right?)

Wow, right? The furniture is a little wacky, but hey, so is my partner! Plus I have my own ideas for future kinetic (i.e. moving) pieces.

This quote from Treehugger.com pretty much sums up my feelings:

"This not the sexiest piece of furniture at ICFF, but it may well be the most important."
Read the whole article on us here.

I spent 7 long, long days away. Missed Franca like CRAZY and I had the world's worst trip home. (5 hours on a plane for an hour long flight anyone?) I'm home now and working already again. Ugh.

Hopefully more, renovation-related fun stuff this week!
For full disclosure, I wasn't stand on the chair so much as using it as a step stool to stand on the buffet. Which is likely just as stupid as standing on a chair.

PLEASE NOTE: Any home improvement project that ends with home-improver looking at his/her crotch in a handheld mirror is problematic to say the least.

On Saturday, I decided to finally hang the Ikea Enje blinds in the dining room. These are new versions of the ones we hung in the office, but instead of pull-chains, they are the tension type.

We need them in the dining room thanks to the west-facing windows which provide blinding light at dinner. We just needed shading, not room darkening, so the Enje is perfect.

Only issue is our window trim is, like most of the trim in our house, not well done at all. (I mean who did that miter? Me?) This means our brackets have to sit funny. (See image to left.)

The blinds don't come in our exact window width, so I had to cut them following Door Sixteen's tutorial.

That went fine and the first one went up no problem. It was when putting the second blind into place that I stepped off the chair causing it to tip and me to completely rack myself in the worse way ever.

I cried. Literally. That's how bad it hurt. I cried. I cursed. I would have thrown something had I not been completely paralyzed by the pain.

So now the blinds are up, but sort if crooked and I cannot bring myself and my swollen, abrasion'ed, purple/yellow/green bruised crotch back up on a safe, proper step stool to fix them.

Before with blinding light.

After with the shades down a little and down all the way. Perfect!

A detail shot just for fun.

SO HERE IS MY PSA:

Listen to my dad.

Don't stand on a bucket, chair, or overturned
plastic storage container to do home improvement projects.

Unless, of course, you plan on starring in some sort of
swollen crotch fetish video, then by all means...

A very happy Mother's day to my mom Joan, sisters Heather & Missy, sister-in-law Anna, mother-in-law Sue and all the other moms!

We celebrated with a delicious breakfast at Over Easy Cafe, then headed to Barnes & Noble to get me a Nook Simple Touch (I'm too impatient to wait for the glowlight one to come instock, and too cheap to pay $60 more for it!)

Franca fell asleep on the way home, so I got to do one of my most favorite things. Carry a sleeping child from the car. I used to LOVE being carried like this as a kid, and adore doing it now. So sweet! It really is the little things in motherhood.

I ran my first half marathon in Indianapolis last weekend. It was 95% humidity and bout 84 degrees. Awesome.

Plus, I had not trained properly. I had been running about 6-7 miles twice a week until Robin, my running partner, left for a month to Finland. Then, I honestly ran about twice. Ugh. Not exactly a training schedule. Running 9 miles ONCE doesn't really prepare your body to race 13. Whoopsa.

I felt amazingly awesome until mile 8, then absolutely hit a wall at 11. I had to make a million bargains with myself not to walk during the last mile. But I didn't, and I ended up with a time that I'm really proud of: 1:54:23, which is an 8:42 pace. Not bad for an ill-prepared first timer right?

Here I am crossing the Indy race track finish line.

We ran thru downtown Indy to the race track. The best thing about the whole race is that I seeded myself slower than my pace, which meant that I was passing people the whole time. Horrible, but that always does wonders for my race-self esteem. The other great thing was the amount of small bands along the course. Little kids belting out AC/DC and Van Halen is a great motivator.

I'm not sure I will do another half anytime soon. It was fun, but at mile 9 I just kept thinking: "Why the heck am I doing this?" I didn't have an answer. Surely, it wasn't for the awesome photos. Yeah, check these out. I look like death! (p.s. the HOHA shirt is from my old running club, the Hoboken Harriers.)

Big Congrats to my sister Heather and Nephew Dean who both kicked butt in their first 5ks and my Brother-In-Law Ken who braved some bad seeding to get a great time on his first half!

So if you like to run halfs, why do you do it? I may need some motivation to not just return to 10ks.

One year ago today I quit my job and got three different ones. A year ago I was an architect. Now I'm an architect, childcare provider and product designer/business owner.

It has been a crazy, fulfilling year. Things haven't necessarily gone according to plan, but I never really had a strict plan. Right now I have two houses I helped design under (or almost) under construction, two little girls who make me insane or insanely happy everyday, a new project underway to help teach visually impaired children math graphics, and a new kinetic furniture company launching next week.

I went from one boss to three. Granted, two of those bosses are two years old and the adult one is self-admittedly a little wack-a-doodle. Even if he is nuts, I love my 3rd boss. He's demanding and hard to work with, but he is one of the most fair people I've ever met. He's never lied to me, and that's very important.

I know it is a hard decision for a lot of women to decide to stay at home after having kids, but what about if we stopped thinking so black and white? I've made my own crazy work/life situation and am pretty happy. Maybe more employers would be open to different situations if more women pushed for them?

It's mind-boggling to think that last year at this time Franca had just started walking and now she's running around (in a cast) singing the spiderman theme song.

So cheers to the best decision I've ever made, and fingers crossed for another terrific year!

Ok, I'm a little too excited about this.

Which probably means the bugs and/or bugs are going to eat all these sprouts soon.

Funny thing is, I wrote this post on the way to Indy last Friday and now the plants are twice as big!

(And bugs are eating our basil. Suggestions? Dishsoap? Dr. Bronners?)

What started as a way to share our renovation progress with my family without emailing a million photos, gained some traction with the story of several dead cats and now, well, I'm not sure what it is! My blogging, as well as our renovation progress, has been fast at times and painfully slow at others.

I have to admit, blogging sometimes stresses me out. I hate to feel like I disappoint y'all. Lately I can't seem to decide if I should let it fall back to its original 'renovation updates' purpose, or if I should really put some effort into this and grow it.

Actually, the second thing isn't so much of an option right now. Life is crazy for me right now. Insane. Manic. Stressful. BUSY.

So what am I doing on my 5 year blog-o-versary? Doing a big before and after post? Nope. Doing a big giveaway? No. (Not my style anyway.) Working on a renovation project? No way. I'm currently blogging from my phone while traveling thru Tennessee, Indianapolis bound for a half marathon for which I'm woefully under prepared.

Not house related at all!

I guess that is what happens when you try to work 20 hrs/wk, start a new company, care for a two-year-old full-time, another one part-time (potty training them both), half-arse train for a half marathon, keep tabs on two residential architectural projects, cook, clean, laundry AND blog. Ha!

But on this special day I'm happy to say help is coming! Marc's only coworker and my running partner is due back in the States in 2 weeks (miss you Robin), plus (drum roll please) we've hired a nanny! Her name is Meghan and she starts next week. It's a share, so I'll only have her 16-20hrs per week, but I'm ridiculously excited!

We are hoping with help with work, I will stop having to sit at my computer working every. single. night. and have some time to finish some renovation projects.

So if you read this far, thank you. And if you are a 86n'It subscriber, reader or follower, and big big thank you!

5 years are behind us and Big Things are coming, I promise!

And let's see if I can do this from my phone, a before and after photo. You've come a long way baby!

(post cliff notes: today is blog 5 year anniversary, super busy, getting nanny, will renovate more, thank you.)

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Franca Update

The cast does not seem to bother her at all still. (I'm hoping it won't get itchy though.) She has less than 4 weeks left in it.

She learned how to walk on it last Friday, but also gets around by using a baby stroller as a walker (see photo), or crawling. We spent most of the weekend in the backyard, and she was just moving around, climbing up on the rock wall and scaring us by navigating the stairs in what looks like a super slo-mo fall.

This collage looks particularly neglectful, but have you ever tried to force a 2 year old to accept help? HA!
Actually in the front step photos she was just lounging there, looking for bugs, and waiting for Marc to walk home from work.

Sponge baths with a bag on her leg are a hard sell, but that is understandable. We are hoping these next 4 weeks will fly by! Thanks so much for all your well wishes!

We spent this weekend trying to wrangle a small cast-legged child in the backyard while doing landscaping/gardening.

The fence line was starting to look pretty bad so I weeded, turned over all the soil, removed a bunch of soil, put new mulch over newspaper, and relocated some orphaned plants from the front yard.

Marc had to dig out about 3 feet of clay under his vine supports and swap it with good soil from the other side of the yard (which will be a pathway). He said he felt like he was digging his own grave, so we better get some tasty tomatoes!

Then he planted some rosemary in the "rock garden" area. And here is another shot of the cleaned up fence line. I still have to turn the corner into the parking area, and do the area beyond the gate. Ugh.

All of this manual labor was making me feel like I was back in my old childhood, so I took Franca along with me and had her help me clean green beans. She was filthy, but such a good helper!

I thought I had bulked-up arms last year with all the wheelbarrow work, but this year might challenge them!

Hope you had a good and productive weekend too!

I've had two small projects on my to do list forever. Lately, they have been getting in my nerves.
I had three little helpers this morning who were feeling crafty, so I put them to work!

FIRST UP, create a hanging basket for Franca's room that I can water in place.

I'm lazy about watering, and the hanging basket in Franca's room does not have a bottom, meaning I have to take it down and water it in the bathroom. I couldn't find a bottom for the current pot nor a cute replacement hanging pot, so I decided to make my own.

I snagged this cute yellow pot w bottom at Target for $2.99.

I drilled 4 holes (one in each side).

And because I didn't want the added weight of more soil,

I decided to fill this larger pot w packing peanuts. The girls helped.

Marc has been teasing me that ribbon is my new duct tape and I had every intention of rehanging this with wire, but... wire snips and sharp wire isn't the best thing to use around kids, so ribbon it is!

We hung it up and looks great!

SECOND was the completely overgrown ginseng ficus in the kitchen. I've been meaning to separate and repot this for oh, a year or so.

I even picked up a new pot on our last Ikea trip, but I've just been starring at it practically bursting out of its current pot for too long now.

Franca helped me separate it.

Then we repotted! One half went back in the kitchen.

(After I took this photo, I got all OCD, and decluttered the side of the fridge!)

And other second half in the office which hopefully will get a little better form.

(Should I tie a string around it?)

We still were not crafted out, so we broke out some of the 'ACK, BROKEN LEG!' gift craft packages from Aunt Julie and made a lady bug and butterfly.

These packages are from a company called Alex Toys - Little Hands. (not a sponsor of this blog, fyi)

Pretty cool and it was about time we took the Easter eggs off the windows.

The girls had so much fun that now, I'm trying to think of more outstanding tasks I need help on!

Hope you are having a great weekend!

My friend and running partner is on a month-long Rotary trip to Finland. I miss her incredibly. This morning, she sent me the most adorable photos of this little nukkekoti (dollhouse in Finnish).

She is staying with host families while there and spotted this in one of the homes. It is a little more horizontal, and has a garage and deck, but I was surprised at how similar to Franca's dollhouse it is! Here is a side-by-side comparison shot:

Finnish (on left) Franca's (on right)

Both have trunks in the bedroom
(but check out the mini magazines on the floor.)

That cute white bird house is giving me an idea!

Franca may need a sun deck too.
That's a really small car and a large gray trash can?

Maybe Marc can make her a garage and sundeck for her second birthday!

So, our 10 year old Malm bed from Ikea ($199) has been through 4 moves and has been having some issues lately. Namely, the new-ish wood slat frame we got for it has been slipping off the metal track sides. Super annoying. [Insert your "How did you break your bed?" joke here.]

A new bed is not in the budget right now, so Marc decided to do a quick fix with three 1x3's. They aren't supporting the slat frame, but just keeping it from slipping off the track. I told him if the fix was over $20, we were getting a new bed. The total came in under $9. Bummer.

Here's an amazing little before and after section drawing:

(Wow, those years of repaying architecture school student loans sure were worth it, no?)

A newly injured Franca got in on the action as supervisor. How hard can a job be when you have that face sitting 6 feet away?

This is actually very close to the alteration we did on Franca's big girl bed (...that I still have not posted. All in due time folks!)

So it looks like my DIY George Nelson Case Study Bed (see left) is going to have to wait. Bummer.

Going down a 3-1/2 foot inflatable slide at a BBQ Festival on Saturday. Buckle fracture in tibia and fibula. Ugh. I've been feeling horrible about it, but just about have myself convinced it was a freak accident. Being a parent is REALLY hard sometimes and I'm not even the injured one!

Temp cast.

She's doing ridiculously well. It doesn't hurt and she is acting completely normal. Kids are amazing. If you ask her where she has boo-boo is she will point to the 2 small scratches on her other leg (from who knows what), and even when pressed to find more will not identify her leg as an injury. Crazy!

We went today to get her real cast on and had a heck of a time picking a color. Pink and blue? Red? Purple? She finally settled on blue and kept trying to convince the nurses to cast the other leg too.

Can you tell she has painted her toenails purple right before this happened? Nice.

She has to wear it for 5 weeks, but doesn't have any restrictions. I'm SO happy for that, because she's been trying to walk/crawl already! Another great thing is that her normal pants fit right over the cast.

The nurses gave her a shoe and told us to cover the cast completely, otherwise the fiberglass rubbing would ruin our hardwood floors. I never would have thought of that. I love nice nurses!

So send some fast healing thoughts our way, we'd appreciate it!

p.s. I now officially hate BBQ. ;)
I was working my way thru blogs on my google reader while my computer saved a large file, while I saw that Chezerby looked up their house on the newly released 1940 Census. I gave it a quick whorl for our address and this is what I found:

Our alley originally did not go through the block. Huh. This has actually been a point of contention on the block since the people at the other end of the block illegally closed off their end of the alley recently. (This means we get all the traffic at our end. Stinks.) According to the new city records, the alley currently does turn and go all the way through the block.

And something more interesting too, in 1940, four people lived in this house:
Daisy Davidson, 53, no job listed.
Fred Jones, 60, husband, police detective.
Maude Jones, 59, wife, no job listed.
Robert Jones, 38, son, accountant.

I showed this to Marc who already knew this because he dug through the old city phone books right after we bought the house. From what we can gather, Daisy lived here with her husband who died(?), then the Jones family moved in. About 5 years later, Daisy is listed as the only person living here again.

Marc just assumed that after her husband's death she rented the house to the family and then moved back in. Now we aren't so sure. We think she may have lived here with the family, otherwise the census would not have listed her, right? Interesting. Now I wonder if they were strangers? friends? family?

Now Marc is going to try to dig up where he wrote down all the past residents of this house. I'll post when he does.

If you want to find out the history of your house, go to the National 1940 Census, or better yet, your local library's old phone book section (you can look up by address which makes it easy!).

No Silver Bells here, just lots of veggies and herbs.

It might be a tad early to plant in this area, but we've had a very warm spring and the next month is INSANE for us (bbq fest #2, birthday party, Indy half marathon, NYC,...).

We used a mix of small starter plants and Asheville's own Sow True Seeds (open-pollinated, non-hybrid, & GMO-free). Here's is what we planted:

Marc also planted tomatoes and snap peas on the vine. We have some rosemary that is going in the "rock garden" area too.

Franca got in on the garden action in a big way. Well, until she discovered that her wheelbarrow could also be a foot bath. I grew up helping my mom with our garden and I can't wait to share that with Franca. (Oh, who am I kidding, I'm really excited to teach/make someone else to weed!)

In other news, I cut myself bangs. Scary with curly hair right? I really like them. If I'm feeling brave, I might post some pics on facebook tomorrow. Go on up to the FB link up there and "like" 86n' It to see them.

Have a great week!

We went sort of nuts with Franca this Easter, mostly because the look of pure joy on her face is amazing.

I know that look won't be around forever. When she's 15 she'll just be mad that I got her the wrong hover board or whatever.

Franca gave us the best gift though, she is sleeping in her big girl bed in her big girl underwear. No. More. Diapers. Amazing.

Marc got me a paper towel holder.

Honestly, this is a great gift. I HATE paper towels, but I HATE our current paper towel dispensing situation even more.

We will have to take it down (and remount it?) when we do the wall wood, but for now, this is going to save my sanity.

What did I get Marc? Just a little ole trip to NYC. That's all. ;)

I'm going to ICFF for work (!, right?!) and he is going to come up, help us do some of the heavy lifting and booth setting up and then tool around the city with Franca while I'm stuck in the Javit's Center all day, everyday.

Seriously, I need a Best.Damn.Wife.Ever award.

I figured instead of showing only photos of plants, it would help to show a plan of the backyard. But because I understand that not everyone loves a plan as much as I do, I'll make it all fancy.

It also might help Marc and I organize ourselves. Imagine that!

And here are some photos of what we have done so far (with the grey pointing to where I took the photo).

It is actually shaping up really nicely and it is AMAZING to spend time out there. Franca loves it. More than loves it actually. It's been fun laying out all the outside rules, like:

What you CANNOT touch: spiders & snakes

What you CAN touch: roly-polies, worms, ants, slugs, snails, beetles, moths, centipedes, etc.

What can I say? The girl loves bugs.

Sometimes we will have come inside and I find her playing in the living room with one hand clenched around a poor roly-poly all curled up just praying for his life. Last week I had to let her drive a dead stink bug around her train track in a matchbox car. She still asks, "Where's my stinky bug?"

Anybunny, it's great to see how close (and above-and-beyond) the real thing is compared to our original plans (check them out here). Now we just have to: plant a garden, make lawnmower path, make a bench, remove last piles of junk, and make some dang real gates.

Should be a fun spring/summmer!

p.s. I'm only calling them roly-poly bugs because that is what people around here call them. I grew up calling them potato bugs and I think Marc calls them pill bugs.

Everyone was so busy last year that we skipped KDBBQ Fest, but this year it is back on!

knuckledeepbbq.com

We are going to try to do some backyard work this Sunday post-fest,
but we might still be wallowing in bbq sauce.

Poor Man's Sod
With this beautiful weather we have been having, we have been exerting most of our renovation energy on the backyard. This involves mostly moving things. I move plants and Marc moves grass.

I call it the poor man's sod.

Very effective.

It's not all moving stuff around. We did build something new for the backyard.
We are going to have a kick-a** garden this year which will include lots of vine plants growing on this:

Marc's handy work. He's going to add some paint? or something to spice it up a little.

Well, I guess I can't claim that this is all new. We did reuse old garden edging wood for the two tall posts.

I have to say, landscaping may be my new love. It combines my three favorite renovation tasks: tearing things up, eye-balling it and getting dirty!

p.s. Are allergies kicking anyone else's butt this year? Ugh.

Happy Easter!

We've gone ahead and got our Easter on this year!

Our full plans include a neighborhood egg hunt on Saturday and a backyard one on Sunday.
Franca is very very excited for "hippy-hop bunny".

She got into her first egg dying experience.

I let Marc talk me into doing vibrant colors, even though I'm a fan of pastels.

She had a blast, but the eggs didn't fair so well. The brown one with the hole in it is especially lovely.

Then we got all crafty and made some bunny ears. Too cute, no?

Happy Easter!

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. Franca decided about 3 weeks ago to shorten her naps to 1.5 hours which leaves me no time to get paying work done, let alone blog. Working every night is getting really, really old.

Franca's love for Yoda has been replaced by her love for Spiderman. Again, no idea how she gets hooked on these guys. Oh well, 1/4 of a Spiderman cupcake makes for a vry effective potty training treat.

On another note, if any local people know of any good part-time/part-day childcare co-ops or mom's wanting a share, please let me know!
Marc has always made fun of the way that I mow, specifically the pattern in which I mow. I never thought anything of it until last week while mowing our lawn. I had a "light bulb" moment.

Growing up, we had 6acres (Mom & Dad correct me here) to mow. Luckily my parents had 3 daughters eager to do the job and an International Harvester 184 tractor mower. Eager? you ask. It was the easiest chore outside because you got to sit, be in your bikini AND listen to headphones (but only in one ear). (My younger brother was relegated to push mowing the septic hill. Sucka!)

Anyway, as a COUNTRY MOUSE this always how I mowed:

See that pattern? As a young Country Mouse, I did that because I weighed 73lbs sopping wet. I'm pretty sure the International doesn't have power steering. Therefore, getting the tractor mower to do a 180 degree turn required more muscle power and weight than I had in me.

The new CITY MOUSE in me just realized that it is easier and looks nicer to do this pattern:

I do still love to mow the lawn. I don't even wear headphones now because it takes only about 10 minutes, not the 3 hours of my youth.

Of course, now that my parents don't have 4 peons to do the mowing, they bought one of these awesome zero radius mowers:

Ok, how dorky is it that I have a photo of myself on my parent's lawnmower?

What about you: City Mouse or Country Mouse mower?
