Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, or more commonly, Odd Future, is a hip-hop collective based out of Los Angeles. The web-born collective has been on a steep rise since 2010. Odd Future contains front man Tyler, the Creator and includes rappers Hodgy Beats, Earl Sweatshirt, Domo Genesis and Mike G, singer Frank Ocean, producers Left Brain, Syd tha Kyd and Matt Martians, and other non-musical members.

Known for their audacity and rebel-like antics, Odd Future has been nominated for Best Crew of 2011 by MTV2′s Sucker Free Awards and Best Web-Born Artist by O Music Awards. Their rise to fame has a lot to do with Tyler, the Creator whose beats are quite eclectic, spanning from crunk to 90′s underground hip-hop.

Currently on tour–they performed last month in Seattle—, the collective has been sharing their live energy with the nation. Going to an Odd Future show is more like going to a punk rock show rather than a typical rap performance. When seeing Odd Future, one can expect nothing less than moshing, stage-diving and skanking. Basically, the collective definitely loves to push buttons and stick it to the mainstream.

Now with a sketch-comedy show on Adult Swim called Loiter Squad and solo success from many of its members, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All is a definite force to be reckoned with.

Kid Ink

Though rising to fame in 2010 with his mixtape, Crash Landing, Kid Ink isn’t quite a newcomer to the hip-hop industry. He spent most of his early career at the control board, mixing and producing for artists like Sean Kingston and Sean “Diddy” Combs–he must be partial to the name Sean. Jokes aside, Kid Ink is quickly becoming a name to be known from the east to the west.

Kid Ink may be from Los Angeles, but he raps with an east coast flare, successfully blending the style of both sub-genres. Kid Ink is currently working on his first full-length album, Up & Away. Its expected release June 12, 2012.

 Iggy Azalea

Australia native, Iggy Azalea, began rapping at the ripe age of 14. Azalea began her claim to fame with a series of freestyle videos on youtube that went viral, landing her a recording contract with Interscope Records.

And she isn’t a gal to be messed with. She means business with her hard delivery and commanding lyrics, on her recent mix tape Ignorant Art Iggy proves she can rap fast as well as slow switching up her sound and proving what she’s worth with every song. Keep a look out for Iggy’s new album in 2012 The New Classic. With Iggy in the game, Nicki Minaj is going to need to keep a hold on to her skirt.

Immediately following the introductions and talking about the above mentioned topics, students did not waist anytime in asking questions. The first student comes out of the gate with the popular question of tuition; “Will it go down?” President Gaudino very quickly responded with a no answer. He followed it up with, “Sadly we will probably be seeing a substantial increase next year, followed up by a consistent increase for the next couple of years.”

Two things President Gaudino mentioned the school was doing to combat the budget cut were:
1. The University has cut the Full Time Equivalency (FTE) Hours by about 100.
2. They have almost completely eliminated the Goods and Services costs.
However, at the same time The University is increasing compensation, in order to keep its national competitiveness.

The other heavy hitter questions of the evening were in concern of the newly approved calendar. “Is it possible to get dead day back?” Our University provost Dr. Marilyn Levine says it’s currently a pilot program that will be reconsidered in 2014. She says that the decision was made after 600 students responded to a survey, in favor of abolishing dead day.

In reference to the Calendar, the cabinet also put the stop to the rumor of Central switching from quarters to semesters in the present future. She says it may be a possibility down the road, but nothing is planned to happen for at least three years.

The Cabinet also answered questions surrounding their involvement in the fight for Higher Education funding in Olympia, student’s ability to network with alumni, and the Academic Planning Taskforce.

Youtube covers. All the cool kids do it.  We wouldn’t be surprised if you knew at least two people with a channel devoted to their covers. It goes without being said that there are some pretty terrible covers out there and with social media on the rise it’s almost impossible to find a half-decent amateur cover these days. Lucky for us, we have websites like reddit and iwastesomuchtime to show us the light. We found a few gems that range from adorable-to-the-point-of-tears to completely badass.

Maria Aragon-Born This Way

This Lady Gaga tune has become a worldwide anthem for empowerment. Ten year old Maria Aragon is a perfect example of what the song is about. She’s a cute as a button with a voice that will take you to church.

After posting the video, Aragon has performed on Ellen and  with Lady Gaga herself.

Pinn Panlle-Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites

Okay, okay. So, admittedly, this one may not fall under the “amateur” category but it can’t go without being mentioned. The Skrillex song was released in 2010 and is still heard blasting in the halls of dormitories all over the country. Pinn Panelle gives it a rock spin with state-of-the-art technology and a cutthroat demeanor.

The coolest things: the bassist and the fact that the lead singer samples his own voice for the cover. We’re willing to bet that you’ve hit “replay” on this video at least twice already.

AJ Rafael and Jess Delgado-Such Great Heights

It’s really a cover of a cover. With around 15 covers by famous recording artists, saying this song is a huge success may be a bit of an understatement. This version is a heart-warming cover of Iron and Wine’s take on the Postal Service song.

Rafael has over 250 videos on his channel and is currently touring in Asia.

Walk Off the Earth-Somebody That I Used to Know

Gotye‘s single has become a world-wide hit and has found home in the hearts of many of our DJs. This cover is so simplistic. Five people. One guitar. Words cannot describe the awesome. You’ll have to watch it for yourself.

How crazy is it when the girl looks straight into the camera? This cover is so popular that a lot of people hear it before the original track.

Jorge and Alexa Narvaex-Home

If you thought the Postal Service cover was heart-warming, brace yourself for the aww-ness of this cover. Father and daughter perform the popular Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes song. If you don’t feel a twinge in your chest during this then you have no soul!

That little girl has such a great ear! This duo has 169 videos but none quite as touching as this. This song may never be the same.

Made famous in 2003 with their hit “Are You Gonna Be My Girl,” Jet skyrocketed to the top of the charts with their album Get Born. The album is ranked at #25 on Triple J’s “Hottest 100 Aussie Albums of All Time.”

Jet's rock-and-roll is so pure that two of the members must permanently wear shades.

Why We Love Them

Early 2003 was a dark time for many of us. With myspace.com being the number one social networking site and Trapt’s “Headstrong” being a smash-hit, some of us look back at that time and give ourselves an internal face-palm. Jet was a much needed wakeup call to the rise of the computer age. Get Born is pure rock-and-roll. No effects. No nonsense. They’re reminiscent of classic rock with a contemporary energy that ignited something deep inside of us.

Cloud Control

Formed in 2005, Cloud Control began to make music for a band competition. Though they claim on their facebook page that they weren’t very good. In 2011, they released their debut album Bliss Release which has since been named #56 on the “Hottest Aussie Albums of All Time.”

First they will control the clouds, next they will conquer the jungle.

Why We Love Them

They’re organic. Bliss Release is a pop-rock symphony recorded on tape in their producer’s basement. Cloud Control is open-hearted without being too sentimental. They’re perfect for days when snow descends upon us like an angel’s bad dandruff. In other words, they’re perfect for every day in Ellensburg from November to April.

Missy Higgins

Missy Higgins struck gold in high school when she won a song writing award and contracts with Eleven and Warner Brothers. In 2004, the first single from her debut album The Sound of White won an Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Award for “Best Pop Release.” The album was ranked #29 on, wait for it, the “Hottest Aussie Albums of All Time.”

Even her stare is thoughtful.

Why We Love Her

She is a sincere lady. Her ageless music is a perfect balance of uplifting tracks and ballads. She came to us in a time of disposable pop-music and delivered genuine tracks that listeners of all tastes could enjoy. Furthermore, she performed with Nic Cester of Jet in 2007 which can only mean that she’s a total badass. To top it all off, she’s super nice. In her spare time, Higgins works with charities for mental health patients and efforts to make all of her tours carbon neutral.

Wolfmother

Wolfmother made their break in 2005 with their single “Woman.” Their self-titled album raced up the ARIA charts to position #3. They immediately became an international success, performing at Seattle’s very own Sasquatch! Music Festival in 2006. Oh and guess what. Wolfmother is ranked as the #8 “Hottest Aussie Album of All Time.”

Why We Love Them

While the rest of the world was freaking out about Y2K, a group of guys withdrew from their fallout shelters and began forming a band that would slap us all in the face with its hard, driving riffs and heavy swagger. Wolfmother makes us want to turn it up to 11 and head-bang until our brains rupture. They’re eclectic, producing many songs from a wide range of awesome. Wolfmother enters 2012 with the promise of a new album which, according to their website, is going to be beastly.

Gotye

We instantly knew we loved Gotye when we found out that he released three studio albums independently. His third album Making Mirrors became a huge international success after he released the first single “Eyes Wide Open.” Gotye has been nominated for five ARIA awards and the MTV EMA for Best Asia and Pacific Act. His sophomore album Like Drawing Blood also made it on Triple J’s “Hottest Aussie Albums of All Time” at position #11.

Gotye isn't likely to fade into the background any time soon.

Why We Love Him

Imagine that your favorite poem was a piece of music composed by the higher power of your choice and you may have an idea what Gotye sounds like. Several DJs—who shall remain nameless—nearly wet themselves when they first saw the video for “Somebody That I Used To Know.” As if the lyrics aren’t thought-provoking enough, the video is insanely moving. The track is one of those spine-tingling, set-on-repeat-until-your-roommate-wants-to-kill-you sort of songs. The best part is that Gotye is witty as hell. His lyrics may be a little depressing but he is one facetious fellow. His personal bio on his website is strangely poetic as he mocks self-worshipping biographies. Gotye is an up-and-comer that the world knows has the potential to blow our minds all the way to the moon.

Winners must claim prize winnings, if selected, by 5pm, Thursday, January 26^th, 2012.  This includes any and all concert/event tickets, whether issued in hard copy or by Will Call.  This ensures legitimate receipt and acceptance of the prize by the intended recipient, in honor of full contest rules.  Any prizes unclaimed after 5pm, Thursday, January 26^th, 2012 will be issued to another eligible winner, by internal promotional means.  Eligible winners for unclaimed prizes will be those individuals who responded to the KCWU-FM survey, who meet all eligibility criteria, and whose names have not already been drawn during the official live on-air drawing process.
