Sidestepping the traditional 'Best Of' yearly round-up, Pitchfork staff deliver a more amusing Worst Album Covers Of 2009 list of essentials. In it, a number of truly ghastly attempts at the dying art of the picture sleeve. My own personal winner that somehow failed to reach the chart: the pixelated mobile shot that adorned the cover of Sir Macca's Amoeba's Secret… Oh-so-pretty

* David Bowie's 1967 debut album for Decca finally receives the Deluxe Edition treatment.

* Disc One features the original stereo and mono mixes of the album stunningly remastered by Peter Mew and Tris Penna at Abbey Road Studios. This is the first time that the mono mix has been available in any format since the late '60s and is obviously the first time on CD.

* Disc Two features the singles, unreleased stereo mixes, the legendary unreleased single 'London Bye Ta-Ta' and 5 Previously Unreleased tracks recorded for John Peel's Top Gear programme in 1967.

* All in all, there are a total of 53 tracks over the two CDs with 26 appearing on CD for the very first time!

Sleeve notes by Tris Penna and Kevin Cann: "With the release of 'David Bowie - the Deluxe Edition', we all agreed that we wanted to make sure that the original album and assorted singles tracks sounded as good, if not better, as when they were first released. So in nearly every case the original one track, two track and four track mastertapes were used during the considered, careful sound restoration and remastering at Abbey Road Studios, which took as main reference the warm and full sound of the original vinyl releases (we had mint copies of the original pressings with us in the studio for comparison purposes).

This release sees this first CD release of the original mono mix of the album (unavailable in any form since the 1960's) - and in places it is a significantly different mix to that of the familiar stereo album. Several tracks make their debut in stereo - 'The Laughing Gnome' and 'The Gospel According To Tony Day' were newly mixed to stereo from the original four track session tapes. 'Did You Ever Have A Dream' existed as a previously unreleased stereo mix from 1966 when it was an album track contender. 'Let Me Sleep Beside You' and 'Karma Man' – are both original stereo mixes from 1967 and unreleased until now.

Unfortunately the multi-tracks for 'Love You Till Tuesday (single version)' and 'When I Live My Dream (single version)' no longer exist in the Decca archive - so these two titles remain only in mono, as do 'Rubber Band (single version)' and 'The London Boys' both of which were only ever mono recordings. This set also sees the first release of the Decca 'London Bye Ta-Ta', as we were incredibly lucky to be able to locate a mono version of this (no stereo version existing)."

EMI Music continue to re-release the entire Queen studio album catalogue on heavyweight vinyl. The album packaging will include every detail of the original releases in their original 12" format. All the unique content of the original albums will be faithfully reproduced.

The next 3 albums in the series are 1980's 'The Game', a grand, state-of-the-art pop album that still stands as one of the band's most enjoyable records, 1982's 'Hot Space', an unabashed pop and dance album & 1995's 'Made in Heaven', musically it harked back to their 1970s heyday with strong melodies and hard rock guitar playing.

In a deliberate move, the albums are not being released chronologically but instead sequenced over the twenty-two year period of release allowing buyers wider choice with each new batch of releases.

On 1st February UB40 will release 'Labour Of Love IV', their first Labour of Love album since 1998's 'Labour of Love III', and coming just in time for Valentines Day!

Literally millions of people from across the globe have developed a love for Jamaican music after hearing UB40, and the band's commitment to  their early influences is as strong as ever. 

The 'Labour of Love' series began in 1983, with a number one album and number one single ('Red, Red Wine'). This was followed in 1989 by 'LOL II', which spawned a no.4 single ('Kingston Town') and two US Billboard Top 10s. Another Top 10 album, 'LOL III', and single ('Come Back, Darling') was released in 1998.

'Labour Of Love IV' continues what has become a passion for the band; to share their love of reggae classics, some well-known, some not so. Recorded at the band's Reflex Studios in Birmingham in the Spring 2009, the album comprises 14 tracks. Covers such as Delroy Wilson ('Close To Me'), John Holt songs ('I Don't Want To See You Cry' and 'Man Next Door') and Rocksteady vocal groups the Melodians ('Get Along Without You Now') and The Paragons ('Holiday') bestow this new album with an infectious sense of joy.

American soul stars Smokey Robinson ('Tracks Of My Tears'), Sam Cooke ('Bring It On Home To Me') and Johnny Nash need no introduction here, except these songs were hugely popular within Caribbean communities, and had a lasting impact upon UB40 themselves. Johnny Nash was the first overseas' act to cover a Bob Marley song and his 'Cream Puff' is a little-known gem from the very early seventies, when the Texan singer was being billed as "the King Of Reggae" in England.

'Labour Of Love IV' is the first to feature another talented Campbell brother, Duncan, on lead vocals. Duncan would have been one of UB40's vocalists right from the start had he not turned them down to pursue adventures around the world. Usually, when a world-famous band changes their lead singer, the transition isn't exactly seamless. Duncan was a natural choice however – not only because he's family and has a style that's similar to Ali's, but also because he sings with such feeling, like a man who's come to claim his rightful legacy. Robin, Astro, Norman and Earl also sing lead vocals on various tracks on the album, and such versatility – twinned with UB40's remarkable consistency – make it another wonderful addition to the series.

The Saturdays are set to continue their run of chart smashes with the release of Ego, the second single from their new album Wordshaker. 'Ego' is released on 4th January.

The video for 'Ego' sees the girls all play characters with superhero abilities. Vanessa has voodoo powers, Una can spontaneously combust things, Rochelle’s specialty is creating ice, Frankie controls electricity and Mollie can summon storms. The villain of the video is Mr X, the epitome of ego.

As far as supergroups go, Bad Company are up there with the rest. Featuring Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke [Free], Mick Ralphs [Mott The Hoople] and Boz Burrell [King Crimson], the groups debut and self titled release 'Bad Company' headed straight to the top of the charts in 1970. Paw Tracks is proud to present the reissue of Animal Collective's 2003 album 'Campfire Songs'. Since the CD's original issue on Catsup Plate recently went out of print, it is our intention to simply keep the CD in print for as long as possible.

An idea originally thought up by Dave Portner and Noah Lennox while in college, 'Campfire Songs' is not a record of songs sung around a campfire but a record that hints at songs emerging from the fire itself: "We wanted to give the music the feeling and atmosphere of the outdoors and the warmth of a fire, so people could bring it indoors."

A collection of five songs written over a period of four to five years, 'Campfire Songs' is an escape from the clutter and electronic assault of the group's 2001 release 'Danse Manatee' and the tour that preceded it. However, the tapestry quality of the songs and the lines that blur endings from beginnings and jams from compositions highlight a style that the boys had become comfortable with from touring and would continue to work on in the years that followed on records like 'Here Comes The Indian' and 'Feels'.

While the songs were completed in the apartment that three of the members shared (Geologist does not play on this album) they chose to record the music on a screened-in porch in Maryland using portable mini disc players so as to allow the ambience of trees blowing in the wind, the birds chirping and the insects in the area to become an integral part of the sound flow. What remains intact are the melodies that have always been a part of the AC sound, though here they have been stripped away of any electronic accompaniment and stretched and slowed to a calmer place than anywhere AC had been before and perhaps has gone since.

Some bands stay in a holding pattern their whole careers. Others jerk the steering wheel hard and fly off the road. On their second album, Vampire Weekend do neither. Or maybe they do both. "I think we sound more like Vampire Weekend than we did on the first record," says drummer Christopher Tomson.

'Contra' pulls off a series of impressive feats: It's bustling with fresh ideas and yet it sounds immediately familiar; it's heavily layered but taut and kinetic; it chews ravenously through sound palettes and rhythms, and yet it's nimble and assured; it's still breezy, and yet it smolders with a new found emotional heft. Formed in Chelmsford when main protagonists Douglas McCarthy [vocals] and Bon Harris [drums, programming] were just 15, Nitzer Ebb cut a dynamic swathe through the industrial music and Balaeric beat scenes of the 1980s and 90s. They were electro-punks before the genre even existed, at a time when The Prodigy were not even a gleam in fellow Essex boy Liam Howlett's eye.

Militaristic, intimidating yet always accessible, Nitzer Ebb enjoyed a string of ferocious club hits and released five critically acclaimed albums on Mute. From their first-ever single, 1984's 'Isn't It Funny How Your Body Works' through to their final 1995 single 'I Thought', they were a band whose honed aggression, originality and precision were impeccable.

Esoteric are pleased to continue their series of CD reissues of the catalogue Finnish label Love Records with this classic album from 1977, released in Britain on Virgin Records. Pekka Pohjola was bass guitarist in the Finnish Progressive outfit Wigwam, but departed the band in 1975 to embark on a solo career.

In the album 'B the Magpie', he produced a masterwork whose influence would spread globally thanks to a European release by Virgin Records. Among the album's fans was Mike Oldfield who would produce and perform on Pohjola's second album ('The Mathematician's Air Display') and recruit him to perform on the 'Exposed' tour.  A wonderful instrumental work, the album was also notably sampled in recent times by DJ Shadow. This Esoteric reissue has been newly remastered and restores the original UK album artwork.

They may have been downgraded over the intervening years to a retrospectively-acclaimed, collector-type act, but at the time Skip Bifferty were genuine contenders: significant radio support for their singles, heavyweight management and afforded Next Big Thing status by the weekly pop papers. Sadly, though, it didn't quite work out. Despite receiving rave reviews, the band's eponymous album failed to elevate them to the premier league, largely due to RCA's bizarre decision not to release it until the summer of 1968 – a full year after it had been completed. Pride of place goes to three previously unreleased recordings, all taken from the original master-tapes. 'Jesus Smith (The Other Side Of)' is the band's semi-legendary, hitherto-lost debut studio recording, while there are two versions of 'Skizoid Revolution', a song that has previously only been available with a guest vocal from Alan Hull.

The band was founded by college roommates Matt Piucci (guitar, vocals) and David Roback (guitar, vocals) in 1981, originally as The Sidewalks. David's brother Steven Roback (bass, vocals) joined the band shortly thereafter. The band soon added Will Glenn (keyboards and violin) and later Eddie Kalwa (drums). They self-released their debut single, 'What She's Done to Your Mind' on their Llama label in 1982. David Roback left to form a new band, Rainy Day, the rest of the band continuing to record as a four piece, releasing the mini-LP, 'Explosions in the Glass Palace' in 1984. The band signed to Island Records, and a live album ('Beyond The Sunset') recorded in Japan, and a third album, 'Crashing Dream', came out in 1985. This the bands only Live album has never been released on CD before and has been re-mastered and has exclusive notes by Classic Rocks Malcolm Dome.

To coincide with the holiday season and by public demand, George Michael will release a brand new version of his single 'December Song' on the 14th December on Island Records. George Michael produced and arranged 'December Song', which was co-written with his long time collaborator David Austin. A beautiful ballad, it is the first Christmas record he has released since the iconic 1984 classic 'Last Christmas', which has now become synonymous with the holiday season and a favourite worldwide.

Classix Nouveaux formed from the ashes of X-Ray Spex when the band auditioned for a new front person in the Melody Maker after the sudden departure of their wild wailer Poly Styrene. Blueboy's first album, originally released in 1992, will be reissued on El Records. In keeping with the Sarah Records tradition, the original album was an 8-track mini-album with no singles or previously / later released tracks, but it is re-released with addition of the band's first four singles and their B-sides as a 19-track album. All of this material has been unavailable, except for download, since around the time Sarah Records shut up shop in 1995. Blueboy were formed by lyricist and singer, Keith Girdler, and songwriter and guitarist, Paul Stewart in Reading in the early 1990s. Since meeting around a decade earlier, Paul and Keith had been in various bands together before Blueboy, and had sent previous demos to Sarah. However, it was the demo for Clearer, which was released in 1991 as their first single, which got them their deal. Whilst their initial releases were gentle and acoustic, they expanded into a full band, with bass, drums, keyboards and cello, and eventually including Harvey Williams on guitar.

When it came to tough, snarling, mod-into-freakbeat sounds, legendary mid-Sixties act The Sorrows had few peers. Formed in Coventry, the band was signed by producer/A&R man John Schroeder to the Piccadilly label in late 1964. In the space of little more than a year, they cut a superb album as well as a clutch of menacing, thrillingly essential 45s, including the iconic 'Take A Heart' (the band's only chart success) and its equally incendiary follow-up, 'You've Got What I Want'. Adding a slightly revised line-up's blistering 1967 single 'Pink Purple Yellow And Red' b/w 'My Gal' to proceedings, 'You've Got What I Want: The Essential Sorrows 1965-67' does exactly what it says on the tin, eschewing the more marginal outtakes, phonetically-learnt foreign language recordings and post-band demos that have diluted previous collections in favour of collecting top-of-the-range, primetime Sorrows on one handy little silver disc.

Pet Shop Boys will release a new EP, 'Christmas', on Parlophone Records on December 14th.

'All Over The World' is a new version of the track which appears on Pet Shop Boys' latest album, 'Yes'. Also included is a new version of 'It Doesn't Often Snow At Christmas', originally an exclusive Christmas single issued to members of the Pet Shop Boys fan club in 1997. Both new versions are produced by Marius de Vries and Pet Shop Boys, based on the original tracks, and have orchestral and choir arrangements by Matt Robertson and Marius de Vries.

Pet Shop Boys' arrangement of the Madness classic, 'My Girl', was originally performed with Suggs and Carl of Madness at last year's charity benefit, 'Can You Bear It?', for the family of Chris and Neil's former assistant and close friend, Dainton Connell, who was tragically killed in a car accident.

The EP also includes a medley of Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida' and Pet Shop Boys classic 'Domino Dancing' which the duo has been performing on their current world tour. This studio version is produced by Stuart Price.
