Onazi: I’m Godly made for success!

2013-10-10T10:33:00.001-07:00

Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi, says he’s truly living his dream life in the cosy Italian city of Parma.

Speaking to The Nation Sports & Style recently, the Lazio FC midfield maestro reflected on his career and life in the ancient city and noted that he’s enjoying every bit of life in the ‘beautiful city’.

Hear him: “When I got to Lazio I was put in Team B, so I had to work very hard in training and on the pitch to achieve lots of strength and stability in the team. I was desperate for success and everybody in the team knew. I was quite young at that time and knew that to command regular shirt would be tough. I knew the only way to achieve my dream of first team shirt was to be committed and dedicated. So when I got the opportunity I was able to justify the first team shirt. I was born to play and be great. I love the club and the cosy life in Lazio. The city is also beautiful. The fans and the management of the club are fantastic and I have never regretted my life in the team because I am already living my dream.”

Onazi, for many that do not know him too well, is a ‘promised child’.

Until recently when he became a household name being sought by Eagles handler, Stephen Keshi, to hold his midfield alongside Mikel Obi, Onazi was a youngster in the colours of My People FC; a youth team put together by televangelist TB Joshua.

While Onazi was a key player in Nigeria’s recent Africa Cup of Nations’ victory, this was not the first time that the 20-year-old has been brought to public attention. In fact, few players have been raised and developed with such expectation and anticipation as Onazi. His progress has long been a subtle narrative for Nigerians.

Onazi and his compatriot, Sani Emmanuel, were selected for the Nigerian U17 team before long and soon earned moves to Europe, and to Italian giants, Lazio.

Since the transfer, Onazi has flourished, and at the time of writing this piece has taken his game to the national level. Onazi, who has identified Chelsea as an ideal future home, speaks on other issues. Excerpts:

Flying high with Eagles

I will like to say I have been so fortunate to maintain my regularity in the national team. It was not that I am perfect in commanding regular shirts but I think God has been so helpful to me not only in Super Eagles but in my career generally. I came into the national team with passion and visions and I thank God my dreams are perfectly coming through.

Patience in career

My career generally has something to do with time. I endured a lot with prayer and determination to get to this level of my career. It took me lots of patience because I have believed in God’s time, which is the best. During my endurance, I tried as much to learn a lot of things in the game and also held my determination to be a better player. So I would like to say, the awaited time of God is paving ways to my success at the moment.

Afcon glory

I was born to be a champion. I will forever be a living champion because I have been ordained to live, conquer and be successful. I went to South Africa with a huge confidence. But I never disclosed it to anybody. The game of football is about one philosophy; you must not doubt your mind, the moment you doubt your faith, it will definitely shake off. I went to the tournament with big faith of winning. Even when critics started kicking against the team, my faith was intact. I had that belief that Eagles would conquer in South Africa and it became stronger when we beat Cote’d’ Ivoire. I see the Ivoirians as the tournament’s main threat to the Super Eagles and we handled the game well. That was when our critics started believing that we could go all the way to win the trophy.

God-made

When you work in God’s directions and obey his commandment, you are bound for greatness. I am God-made because I dedicate everything I have to him because he has been wonderful to me at every point of my career. The first thing I do on waking up is to praise his name before any other thing. And I always see that effect in my daily activities because I have put him before anything.

Making waves in Lazio

When I got to Lazio I was put in Team B, so I had to work very hard in training and on the pitch to achieve lots of strength and stability in the team. I was desperate for success and everybody in the team knew that. I was quite young at that time and knew that to command a regular shirt would be tough. I knew the only way to achieve my dream of first team shirt was to be committed and dedicated. So when I got the opportunity I was able to justify the first team shirt.

I was born to play and be great. I love the club and the cosy life in Lazio. The city is also beautiful. The fans and the management of the club are fantastic and I have never regretted my life in the team because I am already living my dream.

Onazi, the midfielder

I improve with every action tasted in Lazio and that is the magic of my game. I work hard to play better than my last game. I don’t believe I can’t do anything my mates are doing. I think it is a general thing in a footballer’s career; the more you play, the better you become intelligently. Consistency has really paid off for me because I find joy mostly on the pitch especially when I am doing my job well. However, I am not yet there because there are many great footballers in the world today, that is why I am not resting on my oars. I am taking my game higher, higher and higher every day. As a midfielder, you must be dynamic in your style of play and let your team mates feel your impact either in defending or offence; so I am putting lots of creativity into my games.

Positivity

I love living a positive life even in the world of negativity. I am always positive.

Off the pitch

I play snooker to unwind. I can never get tired of it. It is another great game that I love with a passion. I play the game well and my teammates know I’m really good at it.

UGO tips Keshi, Eagles for World Cup

2013-09-25T10:15:00.000-07:00

Jagiellonia Białystok of Poland defender Ugo Ukah has tipped the Super Eagles to go past Ethiopia in the 2014 World Cup play-off.

The 29-year-old who is looking forward to another opportunity in the Super Eagles shirt after making his long awaited debut for Nigeria in Kaduna two years ago said Nigeria will qualify for the World Cup by beating Ethiopia mercilessly in the first leg in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

"In all ramifications, Super Eagles deserve a World cup ticket. It is not only about winning the Nations Cup, but I think the flair of football has returned to Nigeria like what we used to see in the 90s. I started having passions for Nigeria since 1994 Nations Cup, though I was young but I can still remember some things back then. I think the truth of the matter is that history is trailing Keshi, he won the cup as a player and coach, and I still believe he will lead the team to the World cup as a coach again.

The lanky centre defender further heaps praises on Stephen Keshi’s achievement as a national team coach.

“There are no words to describe the coach than saying "best coach" in Africa. It is not only that he won the Nations Cup but on his confidence in the team and always stay to accept every critics. I am happy for him because he has done what white man could have done and he deserves some respect.

"Going to Ethiopia will be tough, the coach knows that already. It is better to prepare for war than undermining the team. Nigeria are good for World Cup, even the Brazilians are already expecting the country because of our populations and flair of football."

ALUKO scored a tremendous volley goal

2013-09-21T10:55:00.002-07:00

Sone Aluko scored a tremendous volley goal Hull fought back to claim a memorable 3-2 victory at St James' Park. The Nigerian steered an inch-perfect 76th-minute volley past goalkeeper Tim Krul to snatch victory after the Tigers had twice come from behind on Tyneside. But Magpies boss Alan Pardew will have been furious with the way his side capitulated on a day when striker Loic Remy demonstrated his potency. The Frenchman, the club's only senior summer addition, struck twice before the break to give his side the lead, much to the delight of watching owner Mike Ashley and director of football Joe Kinnear. However, to the horror of the bulk of a crowd of 51,523, Newcastle endured a dreadful day at the back and were made to pay for their failings. It took Remy just 11 minutes to get his name on the scoresheet, heading home from close range after strike-partner Papiss Cisse had dragged a shot across the face of goal. But after a promising start by the Magpies, they allowed Hull to work their way back into the game and they were level within 15 minutes when Robbie Brady was gifted time and space inside the penalty area to beat Krul.

Ugo Ukah eyes Eagles recall

2013-09-20T13:20:00.001-07:00

Jagiellonia Białystok of Poland defender Ugo Ukah has said he hopes for more Super Eagles action after he made his debut against Zambia in November 2011.

The towering defender who has Italian passport has been an impressive impact to his Polish club, two victory in a role, and has declared his readiness to honour another invitation from Stephen Keshi.

The 29-year-old former Queens Park Rangers defender further revealed how he missed a chance to play in England last season with Crystal Palace almost a destination.

"Keshi called me sometimes ago to ask how I was feeling and doing in my club and it was something that lifted my spirit, it shows I am needed, though it may not be at that particular time but I feel great for showing me love," said Ugo in an exclusive interview.

"Playing for Nigeria has always been a definite option for me, I don't think twice before I honoured the invitation and I will be glad to do it again and again. Nigeria is a blessed country with much talented players all over the world. And I think it is something privileged when such country FA invited you to show your ability."

"It is a big privileged for everybody playing in the national team because there are far better players who are desperately looking for just 20minutes debut, but I am happy to have been a lucky one."

Ugo further speaks on Stephen Keshi for taking the country's further in success following the AFCON glory in February but warns that Super Eagles should be ready for another AFCON cracker when playing Ethiopia in World Cup play-offs.

"There are no words to describe the coach than saying "best coach" in Africa. It is not only that he won the Nations Cup but on his confidence in the team and always stay to accept every critics. I am happy for him because he has done what white man could have done and he deserves some respects."

"Well, the coach has promised to give me a call, but I don't know his plans for now but I will be glad to be part of the play off. And if it goes either way, I will keep my support for the team because my vein is green."

PETER UTAKA happy with scoring form

2013-09-18T07:48:00.000-07:00

Peter Utaka hopes to finish on high note in the China Super League after scoring a brace on Saturday.

Utaka outshone compatriot Yakubu Aiyegbeni in a China Super League match when his brace helped Beijing Guoan beat Guangzhou R&F 6-0.

Utaka scored to give his side a 4-0 lead in the 70th minute, before he completed his brace with the sixth goal in the 90th minute.

"It is always expected and I am glad doing it right again," said Utaka.

"I have always been confident about the goals coming, I am here simply because of my ability and it is great proving just little towards the end of the league but I will be back to rule again next season."

SUPER EAGLES face Ethiopia for World Cup spot

2013-09-16T07:36:00.000-07:00

AFCON holders Nigeria will battle Ethiopia for a spot at the 2014 World Cup, as was decided by the Africa zone play-off draw in Cairo on Monday.

The Super Eagles will play away first to the Walya Antelopes in October, before hosting the second leg at home in Nigeria.

Ethiopia are the least-ranked of the 10 teams that qualified for the final phase of the series, with a FIFA ranking of 93 and 25th in Africa, compared to Nigeria's 36th place.

It is obvious that Stephen Keshi's look favourite base on their recent performance but the star studded team will have to work harder to stop their opponent this time around. Nigeria beats Ethiopia at this year's Nations Cup in the group stage to advance to the quarter final.

The odds favour the African champions in this draw. In 7 previous meetings, they have won 5, drawn 1 and lost just once to Ethiopia.

By far the toughest draw of the round features Ghana against Egypt, while Africa's top-ranked team Côte d'Ivoire get to play Senegal in a repeat of their 2013 African Nations Cup qualifying.

The first leg of the ties happen in between October 11-15 with the second legs taking place between November 15-19.

Draw results:
Ethiopia v Nigeria
Ivory Coast v Senegal
Ghana v Egypt
Tunisia v Cameroon
Burkina Faso v Algeria

OBIEFULE: My life, my wife and my style

2013-09-16T06:22:00.003-07:00

A successful marriage, according to Mignon McLaughlin, requires falling in love many times and always with the same person.

No wonder, Paul Obiefule, Super Eagles' midfielder at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, has crooned that he's still head over heels in love with the Danish lady he met in 2004. Obiefule practically stole some lines from the hit song by the British new wave band -Tears for Fears - 'Head over Heels': Something happens and I'm head over heels; I never find out till I'm head over heels; Something happens and I'm head over heels, as he spoke about the love of his life.

“You know the Bible tells us that having a good wife is a blessing from God,” said Obiefule. “At every point in my career, I have been praying to God to give me my own wife.

“I had to pray very well because I am a very simple, easy-going person and I won't want any problem with my marriage. I can't withstand pressures in my matrimonial life and that kept me praying every time and by the grace of God, I finally got married in 2004.

“I actually met my wife (Omie) when I was then playing for Viborg in Denmark. Initially, we were just friends, like with every relationship, but as time went on, we extended it further by injecting love.

“I was charmed by her facial smiles. She wears her smile always and she is the type that loves to be happy; that really got me attracted to her. I'm really a lively person and was actually looking for a woman to complement my happiness and I truly got one by the grace of God.

“She is not a dull person and we try to live a fun-filled life and I'm so happy with the family that God has given to me,” he explained, as he shed more light on the flip side of his soccer career which has seen him spending almost a decade in the Nordics. Excerpts.

THE NORDICS AS HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Norway has been great to my career. I made huge impact in all the teams I have played for and they treated me specially. It was great for my career and also a great environment to live in. I'm lucky to have played in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. I thank God for the entire journey so far. I enjoyed living in the countries because of the flexibility of life and culture. Right from Denmark, I have been feeling comfortable in the Scandinavia. That also influenced my move to Norway because life is somehow easy only if you can create your own environment. I have been fortunate and I am still enjoying my career here well; life is also good in Finland because I was able to justify my contract with the club. I used my experience and my ability to help them at some points and they really appreciated my contributions. Why I could not stay longer was because of their offer and they could not afford to strike a deal beyond the six months, but I was able to maintain my fitness rate. The four countries have almost the same culture and similar languages but Finland is the only country that has a different language. But the weather and every other thing are somehow the same. Yes, there were speculations that I was going to leave for China but I'm comfortable in this region, coupled with the fact that I have played here for nine years. I started raising my family here and I'm comfortable. I am not saying I can't live outside here, of course it's my career, but it has to take something more tangible and interesting to be able to move my family from here.

MY WIFE AND I

You know the Bible tells us that having a good wife is a blessing from God. At every point in my career, I have been praying to God to give me my own wife. I had to pray very well because I am a very simple, easy-going person and I won't want any problem with my marriage. I can't withstand pressures in my matrimonial life and that kept me praying every time and by the grace of God, I finally got married in 2004.

I actually met my wife (Omie) when I was then playing for Viborg in Denmark. Initially, we were just friends, like in every relationship, but as time went on, we extended it further by injecting love. I was charmed by her facial smiles. She wears her smile always and she is the type that loves to be happy; that really got me attracted to her. I'm really a lively person and was actually looking for a woman to complement my happiness and I truly got one by the grace of God. She is not a dull person and we try to live a fun-filled life and I'm so happy with the family that God has given to me.

It was after that we moved to Norway together after I signed for Lyon Oslo. And that is how God has been leading us and I am very much happy for the one I chose. I am truly blessed with this precious woman while we have jointly been blessed with two kids - a boy and a girl.

Though my wife is Danish, she loves absolutely everything about my country. She was so thrilled the first time she came to Nigeria and the experience was sweet for her. She likes coming to Nigeria and one aspect of our lives that she likes is our unique culture.

MY FAMILY AND I

My family resides in Denmark and that is why I always consider my movement because they give me so much joy being around them. They are one of the reasons I'm still playing in the Scandinavia.

Staying in any of these Scandinavian countries is great because they are safe countries and you enjoy yourself. I know what I am saying in terms of security and other social amenities. Even the living standard is economical compared to some other European cities. Nevertheless, I still have the ambition of playing outside the Scandinavia but have not been fortunate enough. To cap it all, I am happy and grateful for the teams I have played for in these countries.

I travel a lot because of football, as a result, any free time I have, I try to spend it with my family.

Of course, marriage has brought so much to my career. It has brought a lot of things to my career when we talk about being focussed, love and happiness. I have been exposed to some important things in life and it really shows in my mentality because I always feel great being a family man.

As I said before, football has to do with a lot of travelling, that means I leave my family often but thank God, I have a wife who knows the nature of my job. She loves football and has been very understanding. But I don't joke with my free time with my family, I try to spend every free time I have with my family because football is taking me away from them so much.

Being in a good a marriage makes it easier for me to concentrate and knowing that I have a family that I can always look forward to seeing. And what is always on my mind is to make them happy with good performances. I handle the opposite sex with respect and show them my identity of marriage by telling them I have a family that I love, and I think that has been working well for me. I have no reason to have any attachment with the opposite sex when I go for club assignment. I just concentrate on my football. I am blessed with two sweet kids. My first kid is a four-year-old girl, her name is Olivia Adaobi, and the second one is a two-year-old boy, his name is Elliot Ikechukwu Obiefule.

Of course, they recognise me as a footballer; they watch me play almost every game from when they were little babies till now.

ON PLANS FOR KIDS

My plan for my kids is to give them good education so that they can d be responsible for whatever they choose to do. I don't have any personal profession for any of them. I just want them to follow their own dreams and support them in whatever they have passion for. But I would be happier if my boy will play soccer as well because football runs in our family and he already knows that.

On being called 'The Don'

My friends call me 'the don' maybe because of my experience and long stay in this region. I am a sociable guy, I love seeing people around me and I love hanging out with friends.

ON BEST DESIGNING OUTFITS

I love Dolce & Gabbana and that's what I wear mostly all the time. I like other designers but he's my favourite. I spend my money wisely on that because of the smartness and fitness of the cloth. I think that is the emerging cloths in my wardrobe. I'm not complete without a Panama fez cap, but it's must be a D&G.

ON FAVOURITE FOOD

I can eat rice and plantain three times a day; I just love it, and it's a direct meal.

On favourite car

I love Volkswagen. I have Volkswagen jeep and Golf cars. It's a convenient wheel for every sports guy.

On relaxation

Spending time with family and friends, watching movies and having some quite time for myself.

2013-09-14T09:56:00.002-07:00

matches

“My priority has always been to contribute my quota to the success of Eagles. But I also understand the critics, but sometimes it does not work except you are more patient."

IFEANYI happy for title claims

2013-09-14T08:40:00.003-07:00

Nigerian born attacking midfielder, Dumaka Francis Ifeanyi says he’s happy after helping his new club Nara United FC claims this season’s league title as well as top scorer award.

The 24-year-old play maker signed for a Southern Thailand team Ranong FF popularly known as the Andaman Shark but had a little season due to ankle injury before he finally joined the samba of Southern Thailand, Nara United in the second leg of the league where he’s currently flying the Nigeria flag on high note with seven goals in eight matches.

“It is a normal feeling when you strike for success, I really feel excited for claiming the league title and I will be happy to continue doing well in the team when we get to the Champions League,” said Francis.

“For now, I can’t really say much about my future because there are lots of clubs showing interests which I will not like to disclose their names until I decide my future. But above every other thing, I want to keep the winning spirit and champion’s mentality.”

Francis is regarded as one of the most influential player in the Thailand league and was seen by most of his admirers in the country as Nigeria’s new Jay Jay Okocha with his stylish display on the pitch.

“I must give thanks to God for helping me to this level of the game especially in a country like this, the fans are too much, they keep showing me lots of love every time and I think that is part of my secret for scoring goals.”

“On my way to the club, I dreamt so many things and I am happy for realising it and my best is yet to be seen. I wish to keep giving my best at all time for the club and myself.

“Everything didn’t work well between me and Ranong FC and I have to leave with the interest of the samba of Southern Thailand Nara United and I have come to spur the team to more success.”

Francis contract was extended once more to 2012 and his 6 goals of the season helped Pattani fc to go to Champions League in 2012

The Onitcha born attacker had played with Pattani FC in 2012 and led them to the Champions League with six goals but lost out promotion due to money problem. Though he’s still being owed by Pattani as regards his contract.

TIJANI BABANGIDA wants more success with Taraba

2013-09-14T07:10:00.001-07:00

Taraba FC Chairman, Tijani Babangida, has remains confidence on sustaining top league momentum for his promoted club and hoping to reinforce the team with some more experienced Nigerian Premier league players before the kick-off of the new season.

The former Ajax Amsterdam wing wizard who had fulfilled his mandate by promoting Taraba FC to the Nigerian Premier League believes that with four or five more experienced players , the team will settle well in the top league and plead to the government to back the team for more successful campaigns.

“There are more challenges before me either now or in the future and I am confident of positive achievement in either way. The truth of the matter is that I am always ready for more challenges for more success. And it will be great to do it again with Taraba FC especially in the Nigeria top league where more attentions are given to the teams," said Tijani.

"Taraba is a baby team in the top league, and we are ready to learn more to what we have both at the management level and tactical approach but we will not come so cheap."

"When you have the opportunity to compete in the big league, all you need to focus on is to settle well and try to remain in the league for another season. Our focus again now is to sustain the momentum in the top league so that we can dream of more ambitious campaign.”

“I think signing more experienced players at various positions will be more ideal to our dreams. We have bigger dreams but only motivation and diligence can really help us. I believe if we are really motivated, we will remain in the league because there are no ways we will not be playing better. FC Taraba will be a team to learn in the premier league.”

Taraba FC have clinched promotion to the Nigeria Premier League with a hard-fought 1 - 0 victory over the already promoted Giwa FC on the final day of the National League.

PETER UTAKA eyes great start with Beijing

Super Eagles striker, Peter Utaka, is looking forward to a great start after being cleared to make his debut for Beijing Guoan on Sunday against Chuks Akabueze's Wuhan Zall.

Utaka has also revealed how he snubbed European clubs’ offers to stay in China after he penned a two-and-a-half- year deal with Chinese Super League club Beijing Guoan.

The 29-year-old hit-man was unveiled by Beijing Guoan on Tuesday evening after passing the traditional medical examination.

“It will be great to start with a goal, just for the fans to know that I am here to score goals and make them happy with good performance. I am happy to be have been cleared for the match and I promise to give my best at all time," said Utaka.

"It was a dream move for me and the club because they have been trying to sign me last season after my former coach joined them and he made an offer just for me to join the club but it was not enough, so they tried this time around and it happened. I am happy because they have shown that they love me and want me, and my former coach has been looking for our reunion which eventually came to fruition.

"You don't move for money alone because money can't buy you happiness, and there are other things it can't still buy you in life, but I decided to stay in China and make a move to Beijing because I am wanted and loved by the Chinese fans, they have been showing me love. It goes by my heart to know where should move to and it is here now in Beijing.

"I have offers in Europe, but I am enjoying life in China and that is why I chose to join a bigger club, which is Beijing, because they are ambitious and well-respected and will always love to be like Manchester United and Real Madrid."

CHIBUIKE set sights on 'great sesaon'

2013-07-13T16:50:00.001-07:00

Rosenborg of Norway attacker, John Chibuke, has remained calm over his dream to play for Nigeria’s national team after scoring two goals in the Europa League Cup play-off on Thursday.

The 24-year-old midfielder was excited after helping his club to easily defeat Northern Irish team, Crusaders, 7 - 2 on Thursday, with Chibuike on target in the 35th and 51st minutes of the encounter.

“For now, I am focusing on my club. I believe that should be my focus because that is where my life’s all about for now - taking my club to Europa League is on my mind, maybe I will be considered for good if I play in the UEFA games, but I know my time is coming to play for Nigeria,” said Chibuike.

“I am still very much hopeful of playing for Nigeria but I think I just have to let it be in God’s time. I don’t want to rush myself. It will come when God has ordained it and it will be at my best time. So I’m still looking forward to play for Nigeria.”

It could be recalled that Stephen Keshi had promised to give the talented midfielder to prove himself in his team, Keshi’s comment came after it was reported that the former Enugu Rangers ace could dump Nigeria for Sweden.

Chibuike has scored four goals in his last three games, three goals in Europa League play-off so far, as Rosenborg qualified for the second round of the Europa League.

“I played some good games in last season’s Europa, I scored and got injured at some points but I want to do it bigger this time around with a good fitness rate and high-grade performance. I don’t want to leave anything behind to prove myself to the club and achieve something better this season. We are on course for the league but we need to work harder and give it all in every game.”

ONDUKU heaps praises on Keshi

2013-07-13T16:41:00.001-07:00

Home-based Super Eagles attacker Gomo Onduku has continued heaping praises on Nigeria’s coach, Stephen Keshi, for opening a new way for the Nigerian league players.

The home-based Super Eagles beat Ivory Coast 4-1 in Kaduna last weekend in the first league of the CHAN tournament, and Onduku, who had a good game before he gave way for Edeh, believes the team will finish the business at Cote d’voire.

“We will not want to be carried away with our results because we want to keep building more confidence in the coaches. He has really done great for us, it was not like this in the past but I think there are lots of changes in Keshi’s tenure.

“Everybody is ready to die for Keshi because he’s making us happy, he’s making our family happy and that is why he will remain the best in the sight of many players in the league. Keshi is a versatile coach, and that is what makes him different if we are to look at it from the past. I think he deserves all the respects.”

Hot-shot CHIMA eyes Eagles call up

2013-07-12T06:13:00.000-07:00

Nigerian forward Daniel Chima Chukwu believes he has a lot to prove to Stephen Keshi if he’s being considered for a place in the Super Eagles team.

The 21-year-old Molde’s attacker has remain undisputed rave of the moment in the Norwegian topflight since his move from Lyon Oslo in 2010, claiming the league top scorer award last season with league crown. Chima played a vital role in Molde’s second league crown last season and that has made him an outstanding player in the Norwegian top league currently on six goals.

“I want to keep scoring for my club as my first priority and I know my goals can lift up my team,” said Chima in an exclusive interview.

“It’s unfortunate we didn’t start the beginning with good result and that is what is affecting us now but we can turn the table around. We all know the good things in getting result for our club at this level of the league and with more results coming for us, we can catch the leader. This is football, anything can happen, I can’t rule out my team because anything can happen and my coach has told us to wake up and fight for the team.”

“I don’t want to believe that it is our achievement last season that made us to relax, it was just unfortunate that we experience bad beginning and it can still turn around for good.”

“I am very sure that my goals this season will not go unnoticed, I want to play for Nigeria, which is my focus and my objectivity of being working hard. I scored some great goals for Molde last season and I thought I could have earned a call but I am not relent neither do I felt bad but it enable me to work more harder and get a place to represent my country for major tournament.

JOEL OBI: I'm back for good!

2013-07-12T04:37:00.001-07:00

Inter Milan midfielder, Joel Obi says he's looking forward to big return to action after injury lay off that denied him of AFCON 2013 actions in South Africa.

The 22-year-old midfield anchor has passed through all the necessary steps for recovery and joined his Italian club this week for full training sessions ahead of the new season.

"It's great to be back after spending some time on injury treatment. Now, I am back for good and looking forward to be better than I was before," said Joel.

"I don't need to hide my feelings for missing virtually everything about the game because it is something you have been doing before, so I really missed my playing on the pitch."

"It's early to set any target for myself because I just return and I am only hoping to get better in shape and match fitness, though I am fine but my mission is to return bigger."

His club Inter Milan obviously had poor outing last season with their failure to qualify for UEFA tournament but Joel who is eagerly ready to get his starting shirt said the San Siro club will bounce back next season.

"All clubs have their low time, I think we have experience that and we will bounce to the biggest stage of the occasion, it’s all down to the new season."

Earlier this year, Newcastle and Sunderland have both been linked with the 22-year-old and although the Nigerian international’s agent was not naming names, he claimed there are Premier League sides interested.

Utaka: I'm still good for Eagles' role

Dalian Aerbin striker Peter Utaka has reflected on his mission to return back to the national team set up for 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

The 29-year-old prolific striker who is enjoying a new life in Chinese league after being regarded as the last goal-king in Denmark and Belgium believes he still have the ability to help goal shy Keshi's team for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

"Some people believes it is only old or retired players that play in China, I think this is a wrong impression based on the fact that there are lots of good players coming to be part of the Chinese project and they are still young and versatile at international levels," explained Utaka in an exclusive interview.

"I am still as good as I was in Europe, it is only experience am adding to my ability and the hunger to score and provide goals is still very much intact.

"I'm a proud Nigerian, whatever the situation, I love my country and I always want my country to be doing well. The Confederation Cup elimination was a big test for the team and this will enable the coach to have more options. And also will let the selected players to work harder in the future."

"Playing for Nigeria is always the first option for Nigerian players. Because you will be expose to a lot of scenes off and on the pitch. I still have a good memory of my debuts and other games have played for the team but I wish to be back and still use my experience to help the team especially for the qualifiers."

HARUNA eager to keep improving

2013-05-23T12:06:00.001-07:00

Dynamo Kiev midfielder Haruna Lukman says he have a lot to give Super Eagles whenever he’s recall to play for the team.

Young, creative, versatile and blessed with outstanding technique, Haruna is one of the poster boys of Nigeria's new style of football in 2007 when he led Golden Eaglets to victorious outing at FIFA U-17 World Cup in Korea.

The Dynamo Kiev midfielder has featured in all national team soccer groups and his last revelation was a chance to the 2010 World Cup where the team could not win a match before crashing out of the tournament and since then, Haruna’s chance in the senior team was limited even when his former boss Samson Siasia was appointed the coach, as he shut out the former Monaco star from his team.

The 22-year-old regularly demonstrates the ability that promises to make him a star on the global stage with Dynamo Kiev this season and has declares his readiness to honour the reporting call up.

Haruna believes that the way to return back to the national team is to give all for his club side as he’s already making wave in Ukraine this season. Though Dynamo Kiev will not be playing in next season’s UEFA Champions League with 3-2 lost Tavriya last weekend.

“It was a painful lost, we lost two targets at a time, losing to Tavriya means we are out of Champions League ticket, and it is very sad seeing ourselves in such situations but I think we are not destined to be there this time around but we will compensate the fans next time.”

“We did all we could to ensure the victory but I think it was not just our day because we knew what it is at stake losing the game. As it is now, we will continue another dream just for the fans and the club as a whole.”

“I’m sad losing an important game and losing a hope for the qualification but that is football for you. It full of surprises, you get some shocking results when expectations are high but life continues and we will bounce back better.”

The former U-17 skipper has been rumoured to quit Dynamo Kiev with clubs in Germany, Russia and England are already monitoring the talented midfielder who has shunned like millions of stars this season.

“As I am speaking to you now, I don’t know where my future is concerning my movement after life in Ukraine, I am still a relevant Dynamo Kiev player. My focus now is far beyond what you are saying. I am really looking towards a bigger dream. I don’t want to be distracted about transfers, I think it will come at the best time for me but I am happy here.

IGHALO: Maturity is the key to my form

2013-05-04T07:14:00.000-07:00

Dream Team V striker Odion Jude Ighalo has revealed why he's ripe enough for the Super Eagles shirt. The intelligent striker who had scored against Barcelona this season can't wait to help his remain in the top league next season.

Undoubtedly, Ighalo posses what it takes to play for the Nigeria senior team after been part of the U-20 and U-23 team. He's fast, intelligent, rugged and handsome but the Udinese player who is on loan to Granada never seems to be carried away with those characteristics but will rather be as calm as always.

After he finally realized one of his long awaited dreams by scoring the crucial goal that landed his club in the Spanish top league three seasons ago. Granada secured promotion from the Segunda Division to the La Liga for the first time since 1976 after they defeated Elche on away goals following a tense two-legged play-off that ended 1-1 on aggregate. Ighalo scored the equalizing goal.

You have enjoyed more playing time this season than your first experience in La Liga. What is the secret?

The secret is determination and focus and I try as much as I can to live up to my coach’s expectation. I give my best at the training sessions and I also convince the team a lot whenever I get a chance, in order for me to get the next shirt. That has been helping me a lot. My first season was scuttled by injuries but I’ve learnt from the mistakes of the series of injury in my first season. I learnt from it and settled well in the league.

Three seasons ago, you led Granada to La Liga with your goal to break a record of many years. How do you recall the memory?

In one respect, it is great to be a hero for life, because I will forever remain in the history of the club. Some years back while I was in Italy, I had a dream of playing in La Liga because of their style but I never knew it was my goal that would result in the fulfilment of the dream. At the beginning, Udinese refused to let me join a top club in Spain. Even when I was not at my peak, they offered me deals but Udinese refused to release me. Now God has ordained it for me to make my dreams alive at last. I’m proud of my success in the team; I’m proud of the team today and I am also proud that I am an African.

Even the Spaniards can never forget that. I am always living by that memory; the fans have been so passionate about my game even before we came to La Liga. I have been enjoying my games with the fans, and doing such a great thing in their history is always grate for me to live better in their hearts. They love me, they always chant my name even when I am on the bench because they know the ability is there to prove myself.

You have also been regarded by some media in Spain as a living hero of Granada. How do you feel being called a hero?

I feel great because it was not by my doing but God that has always helped me in the team. Also, because the team always stood by me whenever I got injured and they always want to see me in the club. I think I have not been carried away by that because I have not done anything yet in my career. The only way to reciprocate such accolade is to keep working hard for the club and the fans. It also boosts my games on the pitch.

You also made the cover magazine of your club. How do you feel?

It was a great privilege and that is why I need to work harder for greater things. Those things are references of quality and it works when success is about to happen. I was excited seeing myself on the cover of the magazine. It also makes me feel great that I am love in the club.

How are you enjoying life in Spain generally?

It’s been great ever since I have been here both on and off the pitch, though sometimes you experience some tough tasks, which I think is normal in footballers’ careers. But apart from that, I have been enjoying my life here. My team-mates help me a lot; the mood is good and it's an environment where we all want to help each other. And my family as well. My family and my closest friends are the biggest part of my life and they help me in the good times and the bad. I am respected as I give back to them. Spain is a great place; any young player can develop faster in terms of the technicality and the facilities. The big teams also encourage younger players from their academy to excel which I think is good for young players. Life has also been so good to me because I have my kids here with me and they are doing well in terms of education and other things, so it’s been great with me here.

You have played against the big clubs in Spain, like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and others. Which of the games was the one for you so far?

When you play against teams like Real Madrid and Barcelona, you will always feel privileged to compete with the world’s two best players in the Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. I enjoyed playing all the teams in La Liga because of the free-flowing football they known for, but I think playing and scoring against Barcelona was the interesting one this season. It has been my dream to play against either Barcelona or Real Madrid and claim some points. And it came to pass when we beat Madrid at Bernabeu (Ronaldo scored an own goal). And also we came close to beating Barcelona two weeks after which I scored the first goal, but we didn’t win the game because Barca play like computers and with their inspirational player Messi, they came back to stun us. But it was a great game for me.

You have played against some world-ranked defenders like Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Pique, Carlos Puyol and others. Which one is the toughest among them?

These are players with great personalities and they are very easy to outclass when the battle begins. I fear unknown defenders than established ones because I must have watched your game and applied some techniques just for me to outclass any of them. They are all tough but they are still easy to outclass. I have played with lots of tough defenders not only Madrid or Barcelona players. They are all beatable. My toughest defender is not among the world ranked and he’s a very polished defender.

It seems you have grown better in confidence than before. How did you develop it?

I have always been confident, maybe you want to say maturity. Though both of them work together to build determination. I have been exposed to more games and that has really developed my maturity. I play consistently, I meet tackles and I create chances, so those things always improve your game. That is why playing every time helps players a lot. I will say maturity has really helped me to this extent of my career and it will still help me a lot in the future.

La Liga has exposed you like you said and that has also been generating news that some clubs in England and Italy want you in the summer. How true are these rumours?

I don’t know anything about that; I still have contracts with Udinese and Granada are doing everything to make me happy here, so I don’t need to be listening or concentrating on speculation. I have not heard anything from my club and my agent and it will be very ridiculous commenting on what I have not been told officially. I read about some clubs last season, but today I am speaking with you from Granada, so that is football. You get links every time but I won’t be distracted by that. I will like to respect my contract with my parent club (Udinese).

But don’t you think playing in England could be a big step for you?

Playing in La Liga is already a bigger step because life is suitable for me here. And to be precise, I have not seen any official offer from England and that will make it difficult for me to relate myself with rumours. Most players love to play in England because of the modern day football and it is not all players that suit the Premiership style. I know I have what it takes to play in any team in the country but I am happy here for now.

But many argue that Barclays Premier League is the best in the world -

(Cuts in…) And La Liga produced the world’s best two players. I think that era is gone, La Liga is the best.

Apart from Cristiano Ronaldo, you are also an admirer of Samuel Eto’o and Didier Drogba?

I am a kind of player that learns from experienced players. Eto’o and Drogba have really helped my game because I do learn a lot from their experience and it works for me most of the time. I know I can be better than them if the focus is there for me. I think playing in La liga has really helped me to prove myself against the big teams.

With a few games to the end of the season, Granada are two places from the relegation zone. Do you think they can maintain their momentum to play in La Liga next season?

We are working hard to ensure we are not victims of relegation and that is why we fight to the last minute in every game. We know what it takes to remain in La Liga and I am very confident that we will not go to relegation. At least we need three straight wins to be in a comfortable zone. This is the most crucial time of the season. This is the time the big elephants fall, a lot of surprises occur this time but I am confident we will survive the battle.

The champions of Spain, almighty Barcelona were ‘disgraced’ both home and away in the UEFA Champions League by Bayern Munich. Do you think La Liga is still the best league?

You don’t expect winnings every time. I think they are weak and tired. We have to give it to Barcelona, because this same team has been together for five or more seasons, except some few players. But sometimes world football experiences a big shock like this but that does not mean they are not a good side. I am very sure that they will come back stronger next season. And you have to remember that Messi was not fit enough for both legs and that really affected them; well that is not an excuse for their failure. The best team won but La Liga still remains the best.

Aren’t players in Spain tired of Lionel Messi’s domination over the years?

Messi is a player on his own. You can’t hate him, except you don’t want to grow. He’s a class that is not comparable. You just have to give it to him and let him be. I think he will shine till he retires. Maybe coaches are tired of him but I don’t think players are tired of him in the league.

Let’s talk about the national team. You have played from U-20 to U-23 but you are still far from the national team. Does it bother you?

National team assignment is by chance, and not being there does not mean you should be worried. It is ‘soldier go, soldier come’ but everything is down to the coaches. With all sincerity, I think the coach is working and we must understand that not all of us will be there at the same time. I think the coach also knows where his players are and he knows who to call at a particular time. So, I don’t need to be bothered about that at all, but to keep doing well for my club and rely on the grace of God.

There was a time you were almost named in the Super Eagles qualifiers for the Nations Cup. Were you contacted?

You have said it all, almost is absolutely nothing! If I was contacted, I would have been there to fight for the shirt but I am happy that the team went to win the trophy in South Africa. It was a huge celebration for me and I was proud of my roots. It’s green all over!!!!!

You mean you celebrated Super Eagles victory in South Africa?

Why not? Is it not my country? If I had been there won’t another player do the same? Noooo, I am a passionate Super Eagles fan, whether I’m there or not. After my career in Europe, I am still heading back to the country, so why won’t I celebrate my own? I don’t have any grudges for not being part of Super Eagles for now because I know the future is brighter for me in the team.

Super Eagles are fighting for a 2014 World Cup place and AFCON hero Emmanuel Emenike is injured and will be out of the show. Do you think Nigeria without him?

I watched Emenike play against Barcelona here in Spain in the UEFA Champions League; he’s a wonderful player and his injury is a big blow for the team. But I think Nigeria is blessed with talents across the globe, so it is left for the coach to decide who to replace in him if need be. But they will miss him at some point but also qualify for the World Cup.

You have played under Siasia and Eguavon and it seems Keshi is yet to look your way?

I disagree with you, I have friends in the team, and they always say good things about the coach. Well, I may not fit into his plan for now but that does not mean I am forgotten. I was told there is no big boys level in the national team, everybody is big on his own. And the national team is not a place to showcase levels, but to come and serve our country and every other thing is vanity…

EMENIKE tips Spartak for victory

2013-04-20T13:51:00.001-07:00

SUPER Eagles striker, Emmanuel Emenike has tipped Spartak Moscow for victory against arch rival, CSKA Moscow in the much-anticipated derby clash on Sunday in the Russian Premier League.

Emenike has been out of action after sustaining injury at the 2013 Nations Cup where he emerged as the tournament top scorer as Super Eagles of Nigeria won their third AFCON trophy.

He said: “It would have been nice for me to play the game, but I won't be ready though I am giving all my support for my team wherever I sit. I will be in the stadium and I will be glad to see my team going for the victory. I am so confident that we have the team to win the derby. They have been doing well and that will give them motivation to go all the way for the maximum points.”

Emenike added that “a victory in the derby will spur us to more victories in the remaining games. I will be back for good, irrespective of our next opponent. I am looking forward to that.”

With his exploits at the 2013 AFCON, the ultimate goal getter said he’s hoping to return back to action with his top form. A nimble and fast striker, Emenike can cope with even the strongest of centre-halves, despite his relative lack of height at 5ft 11in for a perceived target man. Goals seem to come easy for him, providing he receives the right service.

The derby between CSKA Moscow and Spartak at Metropolitan Arena, Luzhniki will be witnessed by more than 60,000 spectators.

MICHAEL: I’m not quitting Ukraine

2013-04-20T13:47:00.001-07:00

Super Eagles invitee and Kryvbas winger Michael Babatunde has denied reports that he’s leaving the Ukrainain club over non-payment of salary and renewal of work visa.

It was reported that Kryvbas are facing serious financial problems and short of funds to renew the work visas of the foreign players including Michael Babatunde.

Babatunde who spoke exclusively from Ukraine denied the news but admitted there are clubs on the queue waiting for him in the summer but he’s yet to be contacted officially by his club.
Recently, Kryvbas dangled a £1m price tag on the former Heartland of Owerri star which scared off suitors from Turkey and a club from Ukraine.
“There are no elements of truth in the reports that I am leaving Ukraine due to Visa expiration and I am not quitting the club,” Michael stated.

“There is no big deal in clubs having financial problem, as a matter of fact, not only Kryvbas, there are lots of big clubs even in Europe who are also in this situation at times and the best way to help the club is to remain loyal at this time.

“For all I care, I will respect my contract with Kryvbas, according to FIFA rules, and I will be happy leaving the club whenever they choose to sell me.

“I’m not leaving Ukraine for now, I am okay with my club and my visa is still valid and I am not having any problem with the club for whatever reason.”

Michael Babatunde has been named in Nigeria's provisional squad for the FIFA Confederations Cup.

KESHI snubs Yobo again... Emenike, Uche In

2013-04-04T08:05:00.001-07:00

Stephen Keshi has again snubs Super Eagles captain Joseph yobo from his latest list of player for national assignment while AFCON hot-shot Emmanuel Emenike and rave of the moment Kalu Uche were listed for May and June Nigeria matches.

Kalu Uche has earned himself a recall to the Nigeria squad after 16 months following distinguished performances for Turkish club Kasimpasa.

Uche was named in Stephen Keshi's squad of 30 players to prosecute a gruelling schedule of matches in the summer months of May and June.

Uche's return of 16 goals in 27 appearances in the Turkish league is second only to Galatasaray's Buruk Yilmaz, who has two more, and was enough to persuade Keshi to hand him a recall.

Also back is striker Emmanuel Emenike after missing out the post-African Nations Cup party with the injury he sustained at the tournament.

FC Cologne striker Anthony Ujah gets his first call-up to the senior Nigeria side after representing Nigeria at Under-23 level two years ago.

There are four goalkeepers, eight defenders, seven midfielders and 11 strikers.

The African champions have a high-profile friendly against CONCACAF champions Mexico in Houston, Texas, USA on the last day of May, before two World Cup qualifying matches in Nairobi and Windhoek that come before the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup tournament in Brazil.

Nigeria play Tahiti, Uruguay and Spain in Brazil but will play two more games if they advance to the knock-out stage, before returning to Africa for a 2014 African Nations Championship qualifying fixture against Cote d’Ivoire.

Usual suspects Vincent Enyeama, Mikel Obi, Efe Ambrose, Godfrey Oboabona, Ahmed Musa and Victor Moses are called, as well as dark horses John Ogu and Michael Babatunde.

But there is still no place for captain Joseph Yobo, who misses out on extending his record international appearances for Nigeria.

The delegation of 12 home-based players and technical/backroom staff will depart Abuja for the training camp in Nuremberg, Germany on May 15 while the overseas-based professionals are expected to join the team in Germany as their various Leagues come to an end.

Players in Russia, Ukraine and Norway may only join the team for the matches against Kenya and Namibia, and for the FIFA Confederations Cup tournament.
