Nigeria star John Obi Mikel has insisted that the team is all that matters for Stephen Keshi's men and that none of the players are looking for individual
glory, saying that no-one wants to be the African side's Diego Maradona.

Previous Super Eagles squad contained stars such as Jay-Jay Okocha, Rashidi Yekini and Daniel Amokachi, yet the current crop of players has impressed with their togetherness rather than with individual quality.

Mikel and Ahmed Musa - who netted twice against Argentina - have been touted as Nigeria's biggest stars, yet the Chelsea midfielder has stressed that he's not thinking about individual success.

"I only care about the team. Nobody wants to be the Maradona of this team," Mikel said at a press conference ahead of Nigeria's round of 16 game against France.

"We don’t want to be talking about individuals. We all want to do our utmost for the team and I will keep giving my all."

Nigeria's preparation for Sunday's match against the French was marred by a row over appearance fees, with Keshi's men boycotting training the day before their trip to Brasilia, yet Mikel has insisted there were never any real issues.

"There were no major problems over money, just some little discussions. It’s what happens in football. I play for Chelsea and I know how these things work. They happen everywhere.

"Things were quickly sorted and this will not affect our focus for the game. There were never any massive problems."

France have impressed so far this World Cup with some sublime performances in the group stages and Mikel expects a tight encounter at the Estadio Mane Garrincha.

"It will be a spectacular game and we are very motivated. The match could be decided by details. It will be a close encounter.

"I have played against some of the France players before in the Champions League. The coaches have also done their homework on how to approach the game and have given us all the details we need."

Meanwhile, head coach Stephen Keshi was full of respect for France as well ahead of their round of 16 encounter.

"The France players all play at big clubs across the world and [Didier] Deschamps has plenty of options. They have started the tournament really well. It will be a very difficult game.

"The players are all aware of what happened early on against Argentina in the gruop stages. We came out differently after the break. I hope we can take this experience with us toward the match against France.

"It has been a very open tournament. You can never predict what will happen. Look at the Netherlands game [against Mexico] and what happened. Even Brazil are not guaranteed anything. It’s been a wonderful tournament."

Keshi has so far been reluctant to use star attacker Victor Moses, leading to suggestions that the duo have fallen out, but the Nigeria boss has stressed he doesn't have any problems with the Chelsea man, who was on loan at Liverpool last season.

"There is no problem with Moses. We have a lot of good players and I can play anybody I want.

"All the players who are here are good players."

The second bomb blast in three weeks happened in Nyanya district of Abuja on Thursday night, May 1, 2014 50 metres from where a fatal blast went off on April 14, 2014.

The Director General of the National Emergency
Management Agency (NEMA), Sanni Sidi has explained the circumstances that led to yesterday’s explosion.

Sidi said during a meeting with journalists at the Asokoro General Hospital that the blast occurred after a parked car exploded.

Director- General, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Sanni Sidi disclosed that yesterday’s bomb blast happened when a parked car with explosives exploded.

Speaking with Journalists at Asokoro General Hospital, Abuja, Sidi who noted that the gravity of the blast was not as intensive as the previous one, stressed that yesterday’s blast happened fifty metres away from the last one, but the same Nyanya, outskirts of Abuja.

Senator Mohammed arrived Asokoro Hospital at 10. 55 pm in company of the FCTA permanent Secretary, John Chukwu, Secretary, Social Development, Mrs Blessing Onuh; Health Secretary, Ademola Onakomaiya, other FCT executive members.

Also speaking with Journalists at same Asokoro Hospital, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, Senator Bala who described the incident as unfortunate especially coming barely some weeks after the last one, however assured residents of the territory of government’s readiness to provide security as well as protect lives and property, adding that it was early to give numbers of casualties as he was at the hospital to assess the level of services be rendered by his staff.

Giving the number of injured persons at the various hospitals, Secretary, Health and Human Services, Ademola Onakomaiya who disclosed that the total number of those who sustained injuries and Asokoro, Maitama General Hospitals and National Hospital were 41 with 30 at Asokoro, 2 in Maitama and 9 at National Hospital, adding that arrangements have been put in place as 20 bed spaces have been created in three hospitals where those at Asokoro would be taken to.

According to him, 8 for Maitama, 8 in Wuse General Hospital and 4 in Gwarimpa Hospital.

Meanwhile, as at the time of filing this report, relations, friends of affected persons were outside the gate of Asokoro hospital as they were still locked outside.

A father has allegedly beaten his four-year old son to death, padlocking his mouth to prevent him from shouting while the beating lasted.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon at 7, Adetola Adelaja Street, Meiran area of Lagos.

It was gathered that the man, Mr. Chris Elvis, who claims to sell computer accessories, allegedly locked his son, Godrich in the room, padlocked his mouth and beat him to death with an object that inflicted deep cuts all over his body, claiming that the boy was an Ogbanje (evil child that dies and reincarnates repeatedly).

The man landed in trouble when his landlady, Mrs Popoola who was in the market, was informed that something was happening in her house. She rushed home and discovered that the boy had been beaten to death by his father. She rushed to Meiran Police Station to report the matter. The police stormed the house around 9 O’clock last night to arrest Elvis who was about to escape.

After allegedly killing the boy, he locked him in one of his rooms. He told the police that nothing happened but when the police forced the locked room open, they found the dead boy with padlock in his mouth.

Husband of the landlady, Mr. Olusola Adejumo said that the man had been acting strange since he packed into the compound last year, explaining that sometime ago, the man travelled with his family and did not return with his wife, but came with the four-year old boy and another woman, whom he claimed was now his wife because he had parted ways with his former wife.

He said that yesterday, his new wife rushed out of the house shouting for help that the man wanted to kill his son, adding that the man came out of the house and chased his wife with a cutlass, calling the woman a witch. He then went back into his room and locked it, padlocked the boy’s mouth and beat him till he died.

The police at Meiran took the boy’s corpse away and deposited it at the Ota General Hospital, while the man was detained and would be transferred to Area ‘M’ Police Division in Lagos later for further investigation. The police also arrested the landlady who came to report the matter at the police station and detained her till Tuesday morning, while allegedly demanding for N50,000 to bail the innocent woman.

Hi everyone,

As you can imagine this is a very important day in my life, and with these lines I would like to express the memories and emotions that come to me as I write.

This letter is written from my heart, and first of all I would like to say that I will never forget all the affection given to me by the Chelsea fans. From the very first day until the last.

There has been plenty of good moments: the FA Cup, my first trophy as a Blue; the immense happiness of winning titles for the first
time in the club’s history, such as that magical Champions League night in Munich and the Europa League.

On the other hand, I have experienced some complicated situations from a personal point of view, mainly during the last six months. Every message I got through the social media, every nice word you have said to me on the street, and of course, your support in the stadium, has made me feel incredibly proud of the Chelsea fans; you deserve a team like the one you’ve got, with so many fantastic players.

I won’t forget the faith you put in me when I was given the player of the year award the last two seasons. I feel really proud and I will never forget those nights.

Thank you so much for the way you have treated me, you have been unbelievable. I hope you understand that after going through a complicated and, for me, new situation in the last few months, I believe this is the best choice in order to carry on with my football career and to keep enjoying this sport.

Before last summer, my intention was to stay here for a long time; as long as the club wanted me to, and to keep winning trophies for Chelsea FC. This is how happy I was in the club and in the city. However, as you all know, things changed after the preseason. From feeling like an important player, I started to experience some difficult situations and I felt unable to help the team to the extent that I wanted and was used to. Obviously, I fully respect the circumstances.

Football is a team sport and it’s not easy to play regularly in such a good squad. In sports you may win or lose, but the most important thing is to give everything. I hope you know and feel that I have always done so. In every game, in every training session, without exception. I have always tried my best for the club.

I would like to emphasise the affection, admiration and respect that I’ve had for my former team mates since the first day. I want to thank the captains for their help and understanding at all times. They made me feel comfortable when I arrived and they have supported me throughout the difficult times this season.

I thank all my former team mates for these two and a half years and I wish them the best, personally and professionally, for the future. Of course I have been closer to some of them, but the most important thing is that my years in Chelsea have left me with great friends. Friends forever, football rivalries aside.

I also want to highlight the day-to-day job of every member of the Chelsea staff: medical team, kit men, staff at Cobham and Stamford Bridge, media and marketing department, Chelsea TV team… All of them are very important in making this club a great one. Thank you for your treatment and your efforts to make the life of the players easier.

Furthermore, thanks to every manager I have had the pleasure to work with during my time here. They have all been a big help for my progression as a player. I have always respected their decisions, whatever they were; they made me more mature and a stronger person. You learn from everything, and certain situations make you think about other team mates who are coping with similar situations more regularly.

Thank you Andre for giving me the opportunity to join Chelsea FC. Without your support, none of this would have happened. To Robbie and Rafa, for their unlimited trust in me. And to Jose, for making me a stronger player, because in difficult moments, I have learnt to remain positive and to keep working hard.

Lastly, I want to thank the Club, and in particular its owner, Roman Abramovich, for trusting meand making an important investment when signing me. Also for their understanding regarding my situation over the last months. I’m very glad to have been part of the squad that made his and our dream come true: winning the Champions League on that unforgettable night in Munich. Additionally, my years in Chelsea have been profitable for the club, which I’m very pleased about.

I want to make clear that the stage that now comes to an end has been extremely important for me, personally and professionally. Although many of you, like myself, never thought this moment would come, this is football and a new chapter is about to begin.

The horrific photos of this man killing and eating a Muslim brother was taken on Sunday in Bangui.

According to The Associated Press, the men Mad Dog ate their body parts were killed by residents of the Sango neighborhood in revenge for the lynching of a taxi driver from Sango a day earlier.

Two other Muslim passers-by escaped to the protection of French and African peacekeeping forces The agency understands that Magloire didn’t take part in the killings, but turned up in the aftermath.

Earlier in the month horrific footage emerged from Bangui of Mad Dog eating the leg of a Muslim who, according to the BBC, was hauled from a bus, battered and then stabbed before being set on fire.

In the aftermath of the incident, Mad Dog grabbed hold of his leg and then began to devour it. Mad Dog’ had spotted his victim on a minibus and followed him after deciding he looked Muslim.

He gathered a crowd of about 20 Christian youths who forced the bus driver to stop and dragged him from the bus.

Without emotion he told the BBC:
‘I poured petrol over him. I burned him. I ate his leg, right down the white bone.’ Witnesses did not intervene but recorded the footage on mobile phones, including the act of cannibalism.
A video showed his cheeks bulging as he consumes the flesh. Witness Jean-Sylvestre Tchya told news agency AFP:
‘One of the individuals took hold of an arm and went and bought some bread and starting chewing on the flesh, along with his bread.
The scene made many people vomit, and some cried out in horror.’

Corruption:Orji Uzor Kalu calls for Obasanjo's Arrest and prosecution

Former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, yesterday, called for the arrest and prosecution of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, alleging that he started active corruption in Nigeria’s political circle.

Speaking at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, Dr. Kalu pointed out that he wonders why former President Obasanjo was still walking the streets free, stressing that after the reply of his letter by President Goodluck Jonathan, he (Obasanjo) should have been arrested and prosecuted.

According to him, the $16billion power sector fraud was done under ex-President Obasanjo, affirming that he could not even show good leadership as President during his tenure, adding that he used his position to fight political enemies.

He said: “Well, let me tell you, Obasanjo is part of the problems of this country.
The earlier he goes back to his farm the better. He caused all the problems that we are going through. He was worse than Jonathan and any other president of this country.

In 1999 when he was elected President, instead of giving leadership, he went to fight political war. The goodwill this country had, he squandered it, and this is what we are suffering from today because if he had given qualitative leadership without pursuing political enemies, we would have grown.”

Commenting on the resignation of the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Bamango Turkur, Dr. Kalu said that it was a good development for the Nigerian democratic process.

Fast rising actress, Chizzy Alichi, tells Ademola Olonilua about her career and how she handles male advances

How did you get into the movies?

I have always wanted to be an actress. One day, I was passing by and I saw Actors Guild of Nigeria banner at New Berries Park, Enugu, I went in there and made some enquiries. The next day, I registered and started going for auditions. That was in November 2010. I got my first role the same day I went for an audition.

What was the title of the first movie you featured in?

A female friend informed me about the audition, so on getting there, they were almost rounding off. When I got there, the director called me and they auditioned and casted me
immediately. Though I was so nervous because naturally I am a very shy person, I tried my best to perform well. They gave me the role principally because of my height. The title of the movie is Magic Money. I was paid N6,000. I acted alongside Mercy Johnson and Bob-Manuel Udokwu. I was so happy, nervous and excited.

What did you want to become while growing?

I have always wanted to be an actress. I used my lunch money to rent films and would stay hungry. I didn’t allow my shyness to hinder me. I was so determined that I even started working on myself like staying in front of a full length mirror to rehearse and also in front of my friends.

What was the experience like playing alongside such big names especially Mercy Johnson?

It was a dream come true; it was awesome. I was so nervous and also happy. I couldn’t sleep when I got home because I kept wondering that just after my first audition, I could be given a role after a week of registration. I really thanked God.

Are you still a shy person?

Yes and no. When it comes to the camera, I have built myself around it. I’m no longer shy because I love acting. I do it with passion. But when it comes to my personal life, I am still a very shy girl.

What is your New Year resolution?

Well, my New Year resolution is to be a better person and render more help to people and above all work very hard to be a better actress.

What are the challenges you have faced as an upcoming actress?

My main challenge has been my education. It is not easy to combine school and acting. Most times, when I have very important things to do in school I will forget about shooting for some time. I will be graduating this year by God’s grace and I will have all the time in the world to shoot movies. There hasn’t been any form of sexual harassment. I have never experienced it. School and time are basically the challenge.

Lagos is the entertainment headquarters of Nigeria. How has it been for you based in Enugu? How do you handle travelling to several places for shoot?

It has been good because I school here and most Nigerian movies are being shot in Enugu, Owerri and Asaba. But I will move to Lagos once I am done with school. That’s what I enjoy most. Travelling is one of my hobbies. It is fun, going to new places all the time, meeting new people and their way of life. There is always a story to tell.

How was your first kiss in the movie?

I have done many kissing scenes with different actors. My first was with Kenneth Okonkwo. It was awesome because I have always admired him; he is my favourite actor so doing the kissing scene with him was great and as a professional and nice guy that he is, he carried me along very well.

What is the most challenging role you have acted so far, what did you go through?

The most challenging role I have acted was the role of a wicked girl who later went blind. It was so challenging because I have a smiling face and I am always smiling. I am also a very quiet person. I had to come out of my shell to do the role. I had to frown a lot and shout at the top of my voice. Also, I had to research on how the visually impaired walk, look and behave in order to interpret the role very well.

How come you are studying Agricultural Engineering instead of Theatre Arts?

I was good in science subjects back in my secondary school days. But I have passion for acting. Not everybody that reads Theatre Arts are actors and actresses. It is all about passion and determination, although I will still further my education in that area.

How did your parents react to your acting?

My parents are very cool and supportive. They encourage me a lot. I am so grateful to them. Although my elder sister wanted to discourage me, they told her to allow me follow my dream. They are the best.

To rise fast, can you do a badographic movie?

Never. I can do any role but I can never go unclad or act badographic film. I want to be a good role model and I will marry someday, give birth to kids. How would they feel to see their mother act such a role? My parents support me but not when it comes to badography. I can dress very sexy, extremely sexy to shoot a movie but not unclad or be a part of a badographic movie.

How has it been getting ‘toasters’ as most men find it difficult to approach tall girls?

Actually, most men love tall girls and there are many toasters everywhere I go. Even mere seeing my picture or watching my movies, I get admirers. Most men whether short or tall like tall women. I have heard guys saying ‘she is very beautiful but she is tall’.

How often do you encounter male admirers and how do you handle them?

I encounter many on a daily basis unless I don’t go out. I decline politely because I am not a rude person and at the same time, I can’t accept them all.

With your height, are you a lover of heels? Do you wear them at all?

Yes I do. I bless God for my life and body. He did a wonderful work. I wouldn’t want to change anything on my body. I love me. I love heels but I am not a heel freak. I just have a few for shooting occasions. I love wearing them.

Do you get preferential treatment from school mates and lecturers because you act? How do they relate with you?

Yes. I get preferential treatment, in the bank, shopping malls and school. Most of my fellow students don’t object to my decisions and are always happy to help me with school stuffs. My department is somehow popular and respected because of my acting. At the same time, I can’t misbehave like cheating or have somebody writing quiz for me because I am known. I have to be present to do it myself most times.

Are you in a relationship?

Yes, I am and he is not a student.

A TWELVE-YEAR-OLD girl who was defiled by her father, Ebenezer Asare Kumi, the head pastor of Grace Power House Ministry, is on the verge of becoming paralysed.

This was made known by ASP Sarah Acquah at an Accra Circuit
Court where the accused person, Pastor Kumi, is standing trial on a charge of defilement and incest.

According to the prosecutor, the severity of the act by the accused person had affected the victim, a Junior High School pupil, to the extent that she could no longer walk.

Pastor Kumi, 43, who was absent when the case was called yesterday at the court presided over by Ellen Amoah, had denied the charges of defilement and incest levelled against him and was on remand to reappear on January 22, 2013.

ASP Acquah, the prosecutor, informed the court that the accused person had been married to the victim’s mother, one Rose Asare, for the past 14 years and had three children with her.

The prosecutor narrated that in 2012 the victim’s mother, who is the complainant, was admitted at Ridge Hospital for about three weeks to deliver her last baby.

During the period, the victim and her younger sister were living with their father in the house.

One night the accused went to the children’s room while they were asleep, and started caressing the victim.

When the victim opened her eyes and saw what her father was doing, Pastor Kumi allegedly ordered her to keep quiet or else she would die.

The pastor reportedly then took advantage of the absence of the complainant and had sex with her.

ASP Acquah said after satisfying himself, Pastor Kumi warned the victim never to disclose her ordeal to anyone or else he would kill her.

As a result of the threat, the victim did not inform anybody but later started limping.

On December 30, 2012, the victim found it difficult to walk, so she was sent to Ridge Hospital by her mother for medical treatment.

According to the prosecutor, when the victim was examined by a doctor, it was discovered that she had been defiled.

The victim who was initially reluctant to disclose who the perpetrator was, after persistent interrogation, mentioned her father as the one responsible for her predicament.

The matter was subsequently reported to the police at Sowutuom, and later transferred to the Tesano Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) where a medical form was issued for the child to attend hospital.

Pastor Kumi was arrested and after investigations.

THE Federal Government, on Thursday, signed a Prisoners’ Transfer Agreement (PTA) with the United Kingdom for the transfer of James Ibori,
Ibori, was sentenced to 13 years in prison for corruption and money laundering charges at the Southwark Crown Court 9 in London, in April 2012, and has been incarceration in the country.
However, the signing of the PTA by both countries signalled the fact that James Ibori and others would be repatriated to complete their jail terms in Nigeria without a choice.
Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, who received the UK Minister of Justice, Mr Jeremy Wright, in his office, after the agreement was signed by Wright for UK and Nigeria’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke, said the bilateral agreement allows the return of prisoners to serve out their sentences in their home country, where both jurisdictions are in agreement.
In addition, the British government has also promised to give the country £1 million [about N280 million] to assist on comprehensive reformation of Nigerian prisons for the comfort of the inmates. About 15,316 Nigerians are in various prisons abroad, with the largest number of 752 serving time in the UK.
