Man Jailed For "Liking" a Facebook Status

A Palestinian man who clicked "Like" on a Facebook status criticising a Palestinian Authority (PA) official has been sentenced to six months in prison.

Anas Ismail, 29, of Salfit, near Nablus, was found guilty of "libel and slander." Ismail is the second Palestinian to be imprisoned for Facebook activities in the past few days.

He was sentenced to prison on the same day another PA court in Bethlehem sentenced a Palestinian journalist to one year in prison for sharing a photo on Facebook that compared PA President Mahmoud Abbas to a villain and spy of French colonial authorities in a Syrian drama.

The Palestinian Authority police on Friday night released another Palestinian, Mamdouh Hamamreh from prison, one day after he had been sentenced to one year in prison for insulting PA President Mahmoud Abbas on Facebook.

On Thursday, a PA court in Bethlehem upheld a one-year prison sentence imposed earlier on Hamamreh after convicting him of publishing a photo on Facebook comparing Abbas to a villain and traitor who appeared in a popular Syrian TV production.

Hamamreh was the second Palestinian to be imprisoned for insulting Abbas on Facebook since the beginning of this year.

In February, a PA court in Nablus sentenced 26-year-old Anas Awwad, a university student, to one year in prison for positing a photo depicting Abbas as a Real Madrid player. Awwad too was later pardoned by Abbas.

Earlier this year, Ayman Samarah, 40, of Jenin, was found dead in his prison cell after PA security forces prevented Palestinian journalists from covering the case.

The treatment of prisoners in Palestinian prisons is becoming increasingly concerning to human rights activists.

The mother of Karim Shaheen, who is being held in Jericho Prison, said that her son has been hospitalised after suffering from paralysis in in his left arm as a result of torture.

The family of another detainee, Baha Zahdeh, also accused the PA security forces of torturing their son, who is being held in the same prison on suspicion of membership in Hamas.

The Palestinian Authority is however, renowed for paying salaries to convicted terrorists serving time in Israeli prisons.

Norwegian authorities recently expressed their concern over the financial support for the Palestinian Authority and where the money given in aid is going.

NAFDAC arrests brothers, impounds N25m fake ‘Alomo Bitters’

Operatives of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken into custody two brothers, Henry and Ekene Ezeani in connection with illegal manufacturing and sales

of fake alcoholic beverage, "The Prince Alomo-Bitters." Operatives of the agency in Lagos state have impounded N25m worth of the product during the raid.

In a statement by NAFDAC's spokesperson in Lagos state, Anslem Okonkwor, stated that the suspects were part of a syndicate that specialised in producing fake brands of beverages, which had been under the agency's surveillance for some time now.
"A team of NAFDAC officials led by Mr. Joseph Asikpo apprehended them while they were producing the fake products in their residence at 140, Ojora Royal Compound, Coker Village in Lagos," Okonkwor said.
News reporters also learnt that Ekene had been arrested in 2012 for a similar offence but was released on bail.
Henry was said to have admitted to being the owner of the business.
Okonkwor said, "He said he learnt wine production from a company in South Africa, where he had worked before he was deported in 2011.
"His excuse was that he needed money to establish a proper wine producing company of his own."
The Director of Enforcement, NAFDAC, Mr. Garba Macdonald, told newsmen that his officers had been on the trail of the suspects since the presence of the fake products was reported in markets across Lagos state.

Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola (August 24, 1937 – July 7, 1998), often referred to as M. K. O. Abiola, was a popular Nigerian Yoruba businessman, publisher, politician and aristocrat of the Egba clan. He ran for the presidency in 1993, and is widely regarded as the presumed winner of the inconclusive election since no official final results were announced. He died in 1998, after being denied victory when the entire election results were annulled by the preceding military president Ibrahim Babangida because of alleged evidence that they were corrupt and unfair.
But asides from June 12, what else do we know about this man? A lot of stories and hearsay have being passed around concerning the acclaimed winner of the June 12 1993 presidential election winner. Please nobody should get me wrong, I am not trying to discredit or say bad stuffs about the Late M.K.O but I feel we really need to know who this man is. Was he like's of them Gandi, Nkrumah, Mandela, Martin Luther and other people who fought for the people selflessly or was he someone who while fighting for his pocket got caught up in the people's affair and decided to help or was he a bad guy trying to turn a new leave.

President Goodluck Jonathan and failed promises

President Goodluck Jonathan since his assumption of office has failed Nigerians in the aspect of promises he made severally during his political campaigns staged in various parts of the country. initially the confidence given to the president was backed by the average citizen of Nigeria with the hope that the president was going to bring in the change we all had waited for. according to his campaign slogan (a breath of fresh air) we all thought that by now Nigeria would have been a better place to stay in but the case is re-verse as the growing case of bomb blasts by Islamist group (Boko Haram), the rising case of corruption, and the inability of the government to tackle it, the political influence being imposed on the judiciary and all are all black-lining the political dreams we all had for the Goodluck Jonathan administration and his promises for a better Nigeria.
here are some of the political promises Goodluck Jonathan promised Nigerians:
1. The president promised Nigerians that by February 2011, the power sector was going to be privatized as individual companies will handle the power generating capacity and distribution of power to Nigerians.. till date the PHCN is not still privatized but they ARE TALKING ABOUT INCREASING TARIFFS OF POWER SUPPLY when they aren't even giving electricity to the average Nigerian.

2. The President stated that the price of cement was going to be reduced to a minimum of N1, 000.00 per bag, initially the price of cement dropped from N1, 900 to N1, 500 due to the promise the average Nigerian was hoping for the reduction to reach the said minimum but as of now, today the price of cement in nigeria is at the highest maximum of N2, 300.00 per bag. this is even a worse scenario than the time the promise was given.

3. On February 23, last year, the President had mounted the podium at Enyimba Stadium, Aba, to inaugurate his presidential campaign in Abia State. There, he promised that the Federal Government would tackle squarely, the erosion menace that was threatening in the state and the entire South-East zone. He said although the past leaders of the country had intervened in tackling the problem in the past, in the next four years, if he was voted for, the government would face the menace “squarely”.

He also promised that the FG would endeavour to restore the glory of Aba so that it would play a key role in the much talked about vision 2020. He said the main aim of vision 2020 was the industrialization of the country, saying with the potential that abound in Aba, the city would be one of the centres for the industrialization of the nation. this promise till date is not still fulfilled.

4. For the people of Jos, they won’t forget the many promises the President has made in the area of security. He started by assuring them of government’s determination to restore peace to the once-peaceful state while serving as vice president. While deploying soldiers to the city on January 18, 2010 after a sectarian violence that led to the death of more than 180 people, he said peace would soon return to the city. More than two years after giving the assurance, peace has yet to return as more people are being killed day after day.

5. In the area of development, Jonathan also swore to replicate the Asian Tiger feat in Nigeria. But with the closure of many industries, observers are wondering how this will be done. “Many factories have relocated to Ghana either because of lack of power or because of the insecurity that has pervaded the country. But let us wait. He has three more years to go,” says Mr. Ajayi Ipoola, an industrialist. While signing the 2012 budget, Jonathan also vowed “to sack heads of departments and parastatals indicted for lobbying members of the National Assembly for upward review of their budget.”

6. in the area of education, President Goodluck Jonathan promised to build new federal universities in every Geo-political zone of the country and at least one new university in every state, at least accounting for 42 new universities, -- no need to further the argument here....case closed.

7. we all know the headache the feared Islamist group Boko-Haram has brought to our beloved country.

Neither Nigeria nor the nascent administration of President Jonathan has enjoyed peace since that first bomb went off. OVER THE PERIOD there have been countless promises by the president to tackle the space of bomb blast, here we re-call them: Few minutes after the October 1, 2010 multiple bomb blasts at the Eagle Square in Abuja, President Jonathan assured Nigerians that the perpetrators of the act will be brought to justice. He said, "These are terrorists. We know them, we know their sponsors, we are on their trail and by God's grace, some of them will face the law."
Less than three months after the first series of bomb blasts in Abuja, another bomb explosion rocked the well known Abacha Barracks on the New Year's Eve of 2011 in Abuja where several innocent Nigerians died. Again, President Jonathan assured Nigerians that the perpetrators will be brought to book. He said, "There shall be no sacred cows. All, no matter how remotely connected to these incidents, must be brought to justice. They must be made to pay. No one, and we repeat, no one, can make this nation ungovernable."
the He said, "About two months ago, I addressed the nation and said 'Enough is enough.' I meant what I said and the Federal Government will, with level-headedness but urgent priority, take appropriate steps to bring justice to those behind the dastardly attack. I promised an era of transformation and I will not waver in that commitment nor allow any force hamper that resolve to bring about those positive changes that the common man in Nigeria desires and has patiently waited for."

While Nigerians were still recovering from the shock of the Police Headquarters bombing, Boko Haram finally joined the league of internationally recognized terrorist groups when they attacked the United Nations' building in Abuja in August 2011, killing over 23 staff members of the UN. President Jonathan again assured the international community that the perpetrators will be brought to book and boasted of an end to the era of the sect in Nigeria.
He said, "The Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria utterly condemns the barbaric, senseless and cowardly attack on the United Nation's Building in Abuja. The attack is a most despicable assault on the United Nations' objectives of global peace and security, and the sanctity of human life to which Nigeria wholly subscribes.

The dare devils, confident that the security agencies are losing the battle on terrorism launched an attack on Christians during the Christmas Day celebration in a Catholic Church in Madalla, Niger State, killing over 40 worshipers and destroying vehicles worth millions of Naira. President Jonathan in his usual sermon after any bomb blast assured Nigerians that the perpetrators of the crime will be brought to book.
He said, "This government remains resolute in resolving the security challenges that confront the nation. I want to reassure all Nigerians that government will not relent in its determination to bring to justice all the perpetrators of today's acts of violence and all others before now."

The recent setback in the proposed negotiation between representatives of the federal government and the Boko Haram sect leaves little to be desired in the fight against growing insurgency in the country. While the old speculations about the imminent changes in the security chain in the country is still in the offing, political and security observers believe that a change in leadership will have little or no effect if the core issues are not addressed.
Contrary to the solemn promise made to Nigerians by President Jonathan when he took the oath of office, it appears bomb blasts and terrorism according to the President, are a "burden Nigerians must live with."
While it is safe to tone down on the heap of criticisms been lashed out at the president, the truth must however be told that the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria empowers the president to use any means possible to protect the lives and property of every Nigerian. Whether the coming days, months or seasons will change the security situation in the country will be based primarily on the decisions President Jonathan makes.

Fuel Subsidy Probe: i gave Hon. Farouk Lawan bribe: Mr. Femi Otedola

The full details of the $3 million bribery scandal involving members of the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on the Fuel Subsidy probe were revealed yesterday, as one of the major actors in the scandal has opened up on what transpired.

In an exclusive interview with THISDAY, chairman, Zenon Petroleum & Gas Ltd, Mr. Femi Otedola, who hitherto was suspected of being behind the $3 million bribery scandal, blew the lid on what transpired and how chairman of the ad-hoc committee, Hon. Farouk Lawan, and the secretary of the committee, Mr. Boniface Emenalo, had collected $620,000 from him in a sting operation masterminded by the security agencies.

The amount was part payment for the $3 million, which he alleged Lawan had demanded from him to exonerate Zenon Oil from the ad-hoc committee’s report.

As the scandal unfolds, it was learnt that operatives of the State Security Services have sent a video recording of the incident to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for further scrutiny and action.

Otedola, who was opening up on the issue for the first time, narrated how Lawan at the outset of the probe had approached him to get some insight into the workings of the downstream oil and gas sector.

Otedola said he obliged him and ensured that his managing directors of Forte Oil Plc and Zenon Oil appeared at the subsidy probe during its public hearing after both companies had been invited by the committee.

During the probe, he said the committee was informed in no uncertain terms that Zenon does not and has never made claims for subsidy payments from the federal government, as the company was engaged solely in the importation of diesel, a product that is not subsidised.
Zenon’s managing director, Mr. Kanmi Kareem Otaru, during the probe had denied that the company had anything to do with the subsidy regime. He told the committee, “For the avoidance of doubt Zenon never participated or benefited from the subsidy scheme or Petroleum Support Fund (PSF).”

According to him, going by the Act which established the PSF scheme, “Zenon couldn’t participate in it because we don’t have a network of PMS retail outlets which was one of the key criteria beneficiaries must meet and as such we are not qualified to participate to draw from subsidy payments on PMS. So we never collected as records will show.”

Irrespective of the clarification made at the hearing, Otedola said Lawan still approached him a few days before the report was to be tabled on April 18, 2012 before the House of Representatives, demanding money so that Zenon’s name will be kept out of the report.
“When this happened, I was very angry and reminded him that Zenon has never participated in the subsidy scheme and that it would be criminal to rope in the company for something it did not do.

“But Lawan responded, stating that several other marketers were playing ball and had offered the members of the committee large sums of money to ensure that their companies’ names were not published in the report,” he added.

Otedola, said initially he balked at Lawan’s attempt to extort money from him and told the legislator that he would not pay up, as Zenon had not committed any crime.

“Then a day before the report was to be submitted, Lawan called again, informing me that Zenon’s name had been included in the report.
“I, of course, was very angry and asked him to desist from his course of action, but Lawan insisted that I must pay up as other oil marketers had done before me.”

Otedola said he could not believe his eyes the next day when the report came out and Zenon’s name had been listed under the category of companies that had bought foreign exchange from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) but had not imported petrol.

The amount ascribed to Zenon in the report was $232,975,385.13. The report had recommended that Zenon and 14 other marketers that had bought the foreign exchange be referred to the anti-corruption agencies to determine what they used the monies for.
Otedola said at this point he again called Lawan demanding that Zenon’s name be removed from the list, as there was no way his company could have bought that volume of foreign exchange without importing products.

“I reminded him that the amount ascribed to Zenon was wrong as what the company bought was over $400 million for importation of products through the banks – Zenith, UBA and GTB – and that under Sanusi (CBN governor) there was no way anyone could have bought that quantity of foreign exchange and not imported the products having filled the Form M.

“Sanusi will simply clamp down on anyone who tries to pull that kind of stunt,” he said.
In spite of this, Otedola said Lawan still demanded that the members of the committee be given money in exchange for removing Zenon’s name from the report before it is considered in plenary by the entire House.

Otedola said he then asked how much would be required to make the committee happy, to which Lawan responded $3 million.
“I screamed at him, demanding to know why he was doing this to me. All he said was other marketers were paying up to keep their names out of the report so I should do likewise,” he said.

Otedola revealed that it was this point he decided to involve the security agencies to catch Lawan and his committee with their hands in the till.

According to him, “As a law-abiding citizen, I decided to involve the security agencies and they advised me to play along, which prompted me to offer to pay part of the money with the promise that I would pay the balance when my company’s name had been removed from the report."

The security agencies, he disclosed, gave him serialised dollar bills for the sting job and there are call logs, video and audio recordings in the possession of the agencies to confirm all that had transpired between himself and Lawan.

He said on April 21, the Saturday before the plenary, Lawan came in person to his residence and collected $250,000 in cash, as the first instalment, “then the next Monday night he came and collected another $250,000.

“On Tuesday, at 9am, just before the House commenced seating, Boniface came and collected another $120,000.”
Otedola confirmed that during the sting, Lawan and Boniface collected a total of $620,000 in three instalments as part of the $3 million demanded from him.

He added that with the $620,000 that had been extorted by Lawan and the committee, during the plenary, Zenon’s name was removed from the list of companies that had bought foreign exchange but did not import products.

Otedola continued: “He (Lawan) now asked for the balance of $2.5 million, but when I told him that I had no money now that the money was in Lagos, he suggested that I should charter a plane to fly the money from Lagos to Abuja.”

Otedola stressed that his decision to get the law enforcement and security agencies involved stemmed from the fact that he had not broken any law, maintaining that as a law-abiding citizen, he was saddened by the fact that he was being blackmailed by of all people, members of the legislature.

“If you have information that an armed robber is come to raid your home, won’t you notify the police? So, that was the purpose of the sting operation.

“Besides, my integrity is paramount to me. I started selling petroleum products 14 years ago in drums and somebody who has never run a petrol station is trying to blackmail and extort money from me.
“If others (marketers) have paid money, maybe they are guilty. But I did not do anything wrong, so why should they extort money from me? As a law-abiding citizen, I had to involve the security agencies. Indeed, I’m very disappointed because I have worked hard to build my business.”

Insisting that he had nothing to hide or fear over what had happened, Otedola maintained if he was in the wrong he would not have involved the security agencies in the first instance.

In a reference to the strong denials made by Lawan since the scandal became public, Otedola stated, “When he (Lawan) demanded the bribe, I called the agencies. That is because I had nothing to hide. When the bribe was paid, why did he not call and report it to the agencies if he had nothing to.”

Meanwhile, THISDAY gathered that the videotape of the illicit transaction had been sent to the EFCC to investigate the incident.
When contacted, the EFCC, however, said it had neither received the videotape nor had it commenced investigations into the bribery scandal.

EFCC Head of the Media Unit, Mr. Wilson Uwugiaren, said the allegation had not been brought to the knowledge of the commission.
According to him, the only related matter currently being handled by the EFCC was the report of the ad-hoc committee that the commission was studying to establish the facts and track down anyone found culpable for the alleged mismanagement of the PSF.

Disclosing this to Daily Sunsports in Abuja last weekend, the Chairman of the House Committee, Hon. Godfrey Ali Gaiya, hinged the decision to honour the Chelsea’s star on the determination of the National Assembly to reward excellence, stressing that Mikel deserves more than the honour for making Nigeria proud.

The committee’s boss further added that the National Assembly wants to use the reception and honour to encourage other Nigerian footballers and sportsmen at home and abroad and show them the interest Nigerians attach on their achievements. “We have tentatively set aside Tuesday, June 19, as the day to receive Mikel Obi, as a honour for being a worthy Nigerian soccer ambassador as an indispensable and integral member of the Chelsea squad that who both the English FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

“The House wishes to use the honour for Mikel as a way of encouraging our footballers and sportsmen, both at home and abroad, that the government and people of Nigeria are proud of their achievements and exploits and will continue to support them in their efforts to make the country proud.

“Mikel did Nigeria proud, he is our worthy ambassador for proving his competent in Chelsea squad that lifted both the FA Cup and UEFA Championship league. His presence and rating among the best 22 players in the world league was enough indication that something good can always come out of Nigeria,” he said.

Speaking on the arrangement, the consultant to the Committee, Muhammed Abubakar, disclosed that the reception would rounded up with a night party at De Carabian Night Club where some few Chelsea fans would have the opportunity to meet and rock with Mikel, stressing that it would be strictly by invitation.
