The profession of Optometry is still exciting to me even after nearly thirty years in practice. The main reason is the tremendous advancement in technology associated with the diagnosis and treatment of ocular conditions.

One of the greatest advancements is with contact lenses. One group of the population that has always been the most challenging to fit successfully with contact lenses, are those individuals that normally would wear bifocal eyeglasses. A large majority of people in their middle to late forties require bifocal eyeglasses.

Bifocal or multifocal contact lenses have been available for quite some time but their design did not result in a high success rate. Patients however were still motivated to wear contact lenses instead of eyeglasses. In order to see they would wear one contact lens in one eye to see far away and one lens in the other eye to see up close. This method is known as “monovision”. As crazy as this method sounds, many patients were very satisfied with their visual outcome. Unfortunately monovision does not work for everyone.

The good news is there has been a significant improvement in the design of multifocal contact lenses. With the arrival of new multifocal lens designs many more people have been able to wear them successfully. The lenses provide clear comfortable vision at all distances. Many patients report that “their vision seems so natural” with the multifocal contact lenses. After personally fitting many patients with these lenses, I now feel very confident that most people can wear them. My confidence in fitting multifocal contact lenses recently moved to a higher level when I was able to successfully fit my wife Michelle with a pair of multifocal lenses. If I can fit my wife with multifocal contact lenses, believe me I feel like anyone can wear them.

If you are interested in finding out if you are a candidate for multifocal contact lenses contact my office.
