Kisha never fails to come dressed in her costume each year. This year, she’s decided that she’s going to come dressed as Where’s Waldo. She let me snap this photo right before she disappeared into a crowd.

Bob has a very special costume this year. Thanks to his recent knee replacement surgery, he’ll be coming as a half-man/half-robot Cylon hybrid. So say we all, Bob.

And Matt? His costume won’t be such a stretch, since with his beard and his 2 kids that he carries around in baby carriers, he’ll be showing up as Zach Galifianakis.

We know you’re dying to see what we’ll look like, so scroll on below!

Part of our Sunday morning routine at camp is to decorate the sidewalks with pictures and phrases to get you pumped up as you walk into camp… Although we try our best to be super awesome, I think we have a little more work to do before we reach this level of sidewalk chalk mastery!

We know you have some sidewalk chalk sitting in a plastic container in your laundry room, back shed, or under the porch. Dust it off and start creating magical art in your own driveway! Check out some fantastic work created with chalk on city streets.

When you are actually there, there is an visual trick that plays into how you view the artwork, so you have to stand at the right angle for it to appear correctly.

For example, check out this drawing of a woman in a swimming pool when viewed from the WRONG angle.

And here is the same drawing when viewed from the correct angle… Crazy, right?

For more sidewalk chalk artwork by artist Kurt Wenner, explore the image gallery below or explore his website at http://kurtwenner.com/

This one comes from Mrs. Sanchez, whose project “Feeding the Hunger for Reading” from Guilford Middle School here in Greensboro. She received several more donations and her project was fully funded yesterday! Now all of the students in her class have their own copy of The Hunger Games for their reading project this year. Great job AASTC campers and camp families!

Junior stargazers pay attention! A major celestial event is coming to a solar system near you! (That would be the Milky Way, in which we live, but I’m guessing you knew that already).

Around Christmas 2013 (yes, that’s next Christmas, but we wanted to give you enough time to save up some money to buy an awesome telescope). According to Scientific American, “As it flares out of the distant Oort Cloud, the newly discovered comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) appears to be heading on a trajectory that could make for one of the most spectacular night-sky events in living memory.”

This comet will pass just 1.16 million miles from the Sun. What, that’s a pretty far distance you say? Well, consider that the Sun is pretty huge. If the Sun were the scaled down to the size of the Earth, the comet would pass within the orbits of satellites flying around the planet! Now, that’s pretty close!

It’s swing around the Sun will create a beautiful comet tail as the sun’s heat will melt large amounts of the comet’s ice.But don’t worry, scientists aren’t worried about this comet eventually hitting the Earth (or so they say…). But if it does, we should probably schedule an “end of the world” party each week of AASTC 2013. Hmmm…. we better start planning now… just in case.

Learn more about Comet C/2012 S1 at Scientific American. And check back to our camp website for updates on our end of the world party.

Halloween is right around the corner! It’s everyone’s favorite candy-eating, costume-dressing, ghost-avoiding, witch-watching holiday of the year! And sadly but true, October is a long way away from the beginning of summer camp season… so what better way to channel your inner summer camp persona than by creating a summer-camp-themed Halloween costume! Will you be a group of S’Mores? Or how about a campfire? Although, actually, we don’t have much of either of those at our summer camp, since we are on college campuses…. Hmmm… How about dressing up like a dorm dresser? Or how about a tray from the UNCG cafeteria? That doesn’t sound as fun.

At our camp dance at George Mason in 2011, the theme was Halloween. We had some great staff costumes and awesome camper costumes! Hands down, one of the best we’ve ever seen was the staff Tetris costume. It even glowed in the dark! Check out more photos from our Halloween dance on our Flickr page.

Cesar Kuriyama needed a break from his everyday life. He saved up money, and took a year off to travel, spend more time with is family and pursue his own creative ideas. During his year, he started recording 1-second snippits of his day to compile in a video.

In an interview with CNN, he said, “The one-second everyday project was something that originally started out as a way for me to chronicle my year off from work but really quickly after I started I realized that it was helping me in many more ways. It was allowing me to realize that I could remember everyday that I’ve lived; it was allowing me to quickly reflect back on the things that I had to done, to be able to zoom out from the past month and realize, “Oh wow, I sat around a lot this month.” I instantly decided to do it for the rest of my life and realized the benefits were far greater than the amount of work I needed to put into it, which was just a quick second to remind me of that day.”

Our 16-Hour Film and Movie Madness campers can be inspired by this artist, as Cesar created this piece using mostly his iPhone video camera, showing that you don’t need sophisticated equipment to make a video that will garner a lot of attention and kudos. Our campers will be able to create similar projects about their daily lives as Kuriyama is currently working on a mobile app that will allow others to easily compile their own one-second everyday project.

You can keep up to date on Cesar’s project on his 1-Second-Everyday Facebook Page.

Plus, as a BONUS, as I was watching the video, on the day labeled May 17th, 2011, I stumbled across our former camp videographer Will Caballero, who turns out is a good friend of Cesar! Great connection to the AASTC and confirms that despite how many billions of people there are, it truly is still a small world! Keep up with Will’s film ventures at his website Cabal Productions
