My Favorite Makeup Brush Cleanser: Castile Soap

Over the years, I have tried baby shampoo, regular shampoo, facial cleanser, dish soap, and store-bought brush cleansers. Castile soap has become my favorite option.

It is economical, effective, and a small amount goes a long way. I usually purchase Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap from Whole Foods, especially when it is on sale. My preferred option is the unscented light-blue bottle because it does not contain added fragrance. I have also purchased the store brand from Sprouts and it cleans just as effective.

How I Clean Makeup Brushes with Castile Soap

Add a few drops of Castile soap to a small bowl of water and mix well. I do not recommend applying a large amount of soap directly to the brush because concentrated soap can take much longer to rinse out.
Dip only the bristles into the soapy water. Try to keep the ferrule and handle as dry as possible.
Gently swirl the brush until the makeup begins to dissolve and come out of the bristles.
Rinse thoroughly under lukewarm running water, keeping the bristles pointed downward.
Repeat the process when necessary. Dense foundation brushes often hold more product, especially when they are used with full-coverage formulas. I usually wash these brushes 2-3 times to remove all the buildup.
Gently squeeze out excess water with a clean towel, reshape the bristles, and lay the brush flat to dry.

Lip and eyeliner brushes often contain waxy or long-wearing product residue that does not come off easily with the regular cleaning method.

I discovered that the Giovanni 2chic Ultra-Sleek Body Lotion has a fragrance that reminds me of Josie Maran’s Sweet Citrus Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter. Although the two products are not exact dupes, the Giovanni lotion may be a good fragrance alternative for anyone who enjoyed the citrus scent of the Josie Maran body butter.

Texture and consistency

The Josie Maran product has a whipped, lightweight body-butter texture. It feels richer and creamier than an everyday lotion without being excessively heavy.

The Giovanni product has a thinner lotion consistency. It spreads more quickly and may be easier to use when you want lightweight moisture over a larger area of the body.

Because their textures are different, I would not consider them exact formula or performance dupes.

Fragrance

The strongest similarity between these products is their fragrance. To me, both have a sweet citrus aroma similar to the natural citrus scent I noticed in Acure argan oil.

When I originally wrote this review, the Josie Maran body butter was approximately $12 for 2 ounces, while the Giovanni lotion was approximately $8.99 for 8.5 fluid ounces.

Based on those prices, the Giovanni lotion offered considerably more product for the money. I purchased my Josie Maran body butter as part of a set, which made it a better value than purchasing the small size separately.

BareMinerals READY Foundation Review: Coverage, Dryness and Shade Matching

As a longtime user of BareMinerals loose mineral foundation, I was excited when the company introduced a pressed version.

I had used the loose foundation for approximately five years and generally enjoyed its natural finish and buildable coverage. However, loose powder could be messy and sometimes difficult to apply when my skin was dry. I hoped the READY Foundation would be a more convenient alternative.

BareMinerals marketed READY as a hydrating pressed-mineral foundation with buildable coverage and up to 12 hours of wear. Unfortunately, my initial experience did not match those claims.

My first wear test

During my first full-day test, the foundation began looking cakey and chalky within several hours.

By the time I returned home, my skin looked extremely dry. The powder had collected around areas of texture and made fine lines and imperfections appear more noticeable.

The finish made my skin look older while I was wearing it. It emphasized dryness and texture more than my usual foundation. I removed it as soon as I returned home because I was unhappy with the appearance.

Coverage and buildability

Compared with the BareMinerals loose Original Foundation, I found READY more difficult to apply and build. The coverage was approximately sheer to medium on my skin. When I attempted to spot-conceal or add more powder over blemishes, the extra product often emphasized the areas I wanted to cover.

Applying multiple layers eventually made the finish look cakey. For that reason, I received better results when I used a very small amount. I end up using it as a setting powder over my tinted moisturizer.

The loose Original Foundation blended more easily with my skin’s natural oils throughout the day. READY seemed to remain more visibly powdery and did not develop the same natural-looking finish on me.

Application technique

Of the brushes I tested, a dense synthetic brush worked better than a natural-bristle brush.

I lightly tapped the brush onto the pressed powder and applied it with long, gentle sweeping motions. Pressing too firmly into the compact picked up more product than I needed.

Thin layers produced a better result than attempting to reach full coverage immediately. Even with careful application, however, building the product to fuller coverage required more time than I felt the result justified.

BareMinerals offered a Precision Face Brush specifically for READY Foundation. Although I did not initially own that brush, I could understand why the brand recommended a dense brush designed to distribute a small amount of powder evenly.

Texture comparison

The READY Foundation felt slightly thicker and more grainy to me than the BareMinerals loose powder.

The loose foundation appeared more finely milled and blended more seamlessly into my skin. The pressed formula seemed heavier and remained more noticeable on the surface.

Initial conclusion

After my first tests, I did not consider READY an effective replacement for my loose BareMinerals foundation. The coverage was difficult to build, and the finish emphasized dryness on my skin. I thought it might still be useful for light touch-ups or on the oilier areas of my T-zone, but I did not enjoy it as an all-over, fuller-coverage foundation.

The formula contained bismuth oxychloride, an ingredient I had suspected of irritating my skin in other mineral products. I could not determine whether it contributed to the dryness or other problems I experienced with READY.

Because the shade also appeared too warm, I decided to visit a BareMinerals boutique for another color match before reaching a final conclusion.

January 5 update: in-store shade match

I visited a BareMinerals store and explained that I had ordered READY in Medium Beige.

The beauty associate suggested that Medium Tan might be a better option. Although the name sounded darker, the shade had cooler, rosier undertones and blended more naturally with my complexion than READY Medium Beige.

The associate applied the foundation with the Precision Face Brush. The brush felt soft, fluffy and dense enough to distribute the powder evenly. I asked whether I could achieve a similar result with the Handy Buki brush I already owned. She strongly recommended the Precision Face Brush and felt that the Handy Buki would not apply the pressed formula in the same way.

The better shade and specialized brush improved the initial application. However, I could still see some unevenness, and the foundation looked somewhat heavy on my forehead.

This suggested that my original shade was part of the problem, but it was not the only issue. Even with a better color match and the recommended brush, I was still not completely satisfied with the texture and finish.

Customer-service experience

Because I had ordered the original shade online, I contacted customer service to ask about exchanging it.

The representative was helpful and advised me to complete the in-store color match before calling back. The company then offered to send the newly recommended shade without an additional charge and allowed me to keep the first compact.

Although I had previously experienced frustration with the foundation and delayed online shipments, I was pleased with the assistance I received during the exchange process.

Skin reaction after the store visit

I noticed a small breakout later that evening.

I could not determine whether it was related to the foundation, the brush used at the store, another product applied during the visit, or an unrelated factor. One blemish was not enough to establish that the foundation caused a breakout.

Medium Beige shade comparison

Before ordering, I contacted BareMinerals customer service. The representative told me that people often wore the same shade in the READY and Original formulas, so I ordered Medium Beige online.

When I compared the two products, READY Medium Beige looked warmer and more yellow. The Original Medium Beige appeared more neutral and was a better match for my complexion.

Because my skin can be difficult to match, I generally have better results with shades that are neither strongly warm nor strongly cool.

Based on this experience, I would not assume that identical shade names look the same across different formulas. In-store swatching and several hours of wear can reveal differences that are not obvious immediately after application.

Final thoughts

The READY Foundation did not perform as well for me as the BareMinerals Original loose foundation.

A better shade match and the Precision Face Brush improved the application, but they did not completely solve the heaviness, dryness and uneven finish I experienced.

I do not plan to repurchase this product, mainly because of the scent and alcohol content. I also probably will not purchase the T.N. Dickinson’s version, since its scent and formula appear to be similar.

Overall, this is an affordable and versatile witch hazel product for oily skin or occasional use on minor skin irritations. People with dry, sensitive, or compromised skin may prefer an alcohol-free formula instead.

I found this product in the first-aid aisle near the hydrogen peroxide and bandages at my local Target. Both this product and the T.N. Dickinson’s version come in a 16-ounce bottle, so this is an inexpensive way to find out whether you enjoy using traditional witch hazel before spending more on another brand.

I discovered the Giovanni D:TOX System Replenishing Facial Moisturizer during a skincare sale event at Whole Foods.

I paid less than $10 for it, although I threw away the receipt before recording the exact price. At the time, I was looking for an affordable facial moisturizer with a botanical-focused formula and did not want to spend more than $20 to $30 on a basic face cream.

Giovanni marketed this as a day-or-night moisturizer formulated with green tea, fig, acai and goji berry extracts. Rather than relying on those marketing claims, I evaluated it based on its texture, absorption, scent and how it performed on my combination skin with dry areas.

Texture and application

The moisturizer had a thick, creamy consistency.

It felt heavier than a lightweight daytime lotion when I first applied it, and it took longer to settle into my skin. When I used a generous layer at night, the cream remained noticeable for approximately 15 to 20 minutes before the heavier sensation subsided.

The Acure oil had a slight citrus-like or nutty scent. Some reviewers found the scent unpleasant, but it did not bother me. Natural oils can vary slightly in scent between batches, and I found that the smell became much less noticeable after application.

Texture and consistency

This was one of the thickest body lotions I had tried. Its consistency reminded me more of a body cream and was almost as thick as cupcake frosting.

I was excited to try the Josie Maran Argan Tinted Moisturizer because I liked the idea of combining light coverage, moisturizing ingredients, and SPF 30 in one product.

My skin tended to become especially dry during winter and spring, so I hoped the argan oil and other emollient ingredients would make this more comfortable than the tinted moisturizers I had previously used.

Unfortunately, the product did not initially feel as moisturizing as I expected.

Texture and application

I purchased MISSHA M BB Boomer after a sales associate at the Hong Kong MISSHA store recommended it as a moisturizing primer to wear beneath BB cream.

I had previously tried primers from Smashbox but did not particularly enjoy their slippery texture. They helped smooth the appearance of pores, but I did not feel that they made my makeup last significantly longer.

Although BB Boomer also contained silicones, its texture and finish felt different from the Smashbox primer I had used. It felt more like a lightweight moisturizing and illuminating base than a traditional pore-filling primer.

Texture and application

BB Boomer had a lightweight, creamy texture.

It spread easily and absorbed relatively quickly without leaving my face feeling greasy or heavy. It felt comfortable on my dry areas and gave me a smoother base before I applied BB cream.

Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream was marketed as a highly pigmented, waterproof cream color with a luminous finish.

I tested two shades: Charcoal and Pink Beige. The product cost approximately $22 for 0.21 ounces when I purchased it.

Shades and finish

Charcoal was the more versatile shade for me. I could use it to create a soft smoky eye that still felt appropriate for everyday wear.

Pink Beige was much more reflective. Although the color was attractive, it contained more shimmer than I preferred for an all-over everyday eye look.

Most of the shades I encountered had a shimmery, pearly or metallic finish. Someone who enjoys luminous eye makeup may appreciate the selection, but I would have preferred more understated or matte options.

Pigmentation

Its synthetic bristles felt fluffy and comfortable, even when I spent extra time buffing powder over my face. It distributed mineral foundation evenly and helped the finish look smooth and softly blended.

The brush was more expensive than many of the others in my collection, but I thought the quality and softness of the bristles justified the price.

Because it was retractable, it was convenient to carry in my purse or travel makeup bag. The enclosed design also helped prevent loose powder from spreading inside the bag.

The brush required careful cleaning. I washed only the exposed bristles and avoided allowing water to enter the barrel or retractable mechanism. After removing the excess water, I dried it with the bristles angled downward so moisture would not travel into the handle.

Bare Escentuals brushes

The Bare Escentuals brushes I owned felt rougher and more irritating on my skin than the other brushes in my collection.

The natural goat-hair bristles were too scratchy for me to use comfortably during prolonged buffing. Since mineral-foundation application can involve repeatedly moving the brush over the same area, the texture became especially noticeable.

This was my experience with the specific brushes I purchased and does not necessarily describe every brush the brand has produced.

Bare Escentuals retractable brush

The Bare Escentuals retractable brush was dense and compact.

Its small head made it useful for applying powder to targeted areas, but covering my entire face took longer than it did with a larger kabuki brush.

I also found that the retractable mechanism did not feel particularly durable. Because of the bristle texture and the construction, I would not have repurchased this brush.

Sephora bronzer brush

The Sephora bronzer brush was also made with goat hair, but it felt noticeably softer than my Bare Escentuals brushes.

Its large, dense head made it useful for quickly buffing powder over the face. It deposited more product than a loose, fluffy powder brush, so it worked well when I wanted medium-to-full coverage.

The dense bristles could pick up a generous amount of mineral foundation, and some powder remained trapped deeper in the brush. I therefore used a light hand and tapped away the excess before applying it to my face.

My brush remained reasonably soft when I washed it gently and avoided soaking the metal ferrule or handle.

Coverage comparison

Different brush shapes produced different levels of coverage for me.

Light coverage

A softer, fluffier brush applied a thinner layer of mineral powder. This worked well for setting makeup or lightly evening out my skin tone.

Medium coverage

A traditional rounded kabuki, such as the Everyday Minerals kabuki, gave me more control when building coverage in several thin layers.

Fuller coverage

The Everyday Minerals flat-top kabuki and dense Sephora bronzer brush deposited more powder and made it easier to achieve fuller coverage.

The flat surface of the Everyday Minerals brush was especially useful when I wanted to press and buff powder over areas with more visible discoloration.

The coverage still depended on the mineral foundation itself and how much product I applied. A dense brush made fuller coverage easier, but it could also make the makeup look heavy if I picked up too much powder.

Best brushes for travel

The Too Faced and Bare Escentuals retractable brushes were the most convenient travel options because the bristles could be enclosed.

Between the two, I strongly preferred the Too Faced brush. Its bristles were softer, the head was fluffier, and it covered a larger area of my face.

The Bare Escentuals brush was smaller and denser, which made it useful for targeted application but slower for an entire face.

Cleaning and drying

Dense kabuki brushes required more time to rinse and dry than my less compact brushes.

I cleaned them gently, taking care not to soak the ferrule or handle. After rinsing, I pressed out excess water with a clean towel and reshaped the bristles.

I dried the brushes horizontally or with the bristles angled downward. I avoided drying them upright while wet because moisture could travel into the ferrule and weaken the brush over time.

Retractable brushes required extra care because water could enter the barrel and damage the mechanism.

Final rankings

Best overall value: Everyday Minerals

The Everyday Minerals brushes were soft, durable, and affordable. They offered several shapes for different coverage levels and worked especially well with loose mineral foundation.

Best for travel: Too Faced retractable kabuki

This was my favorite brush for carrying in a purse or travel bag. It was soft, fluffy, and convenient without sacrificing the quality of the application.

Best for fuller coverage: Everyday Minerals flat-top kabuki

The dense, flat surface made it easier to deposit and build mineral foundation over areas where I wanted more coverage.

Best for quick application: Sephora bronzer brush

The large, dense head covered my face quickly, although I had to be careful not to pick up too much powder.

I became interested in Josie Maran’s argan oil after reading about the brand and wanted an affordable way to test several products before purchasing full sizes.

This travel-sized set gave me the opportunity to try the brand’s argan oil, body cleansing oil, moisturizer, hair serum, body lotion, and several other products from the line.

I was especially interested in the set during winter, when my face and body tended to feel drier.

My experience with the argan oil

The pure argan oil was one of the products I most wanted to try.

I usually applied only one or two drops. Instead of placing the oil directly onto my face, I warmed it between my palms and gently pressed it over my moisturizer.

Using this small amount made the oil feel lighter and easier to distribute. When I applied too much, it felt noticeably heavier and remained on the surface of my skin longer.

The argan oil felt lighter on my skin than the jojoba oil I had previously used. I did not notice new blemishes while using it sparingly, although individual reactions to facial oils can vary.

I also used small amounts on my cuticles, nails, lips, and other areas that felt dry. I occasionally pressed a trace amount around the outer orbital area, taking care to avoid getting the oil into my eyes.

Argan body cleansing oil

The body cleansing oil was my favorite product in the set.

I was impressed by how comfortable it felt on my dry body skin. I applied it before standing directly beneath the shower water and massaged it over my skin.

When I gradually added water, the oil emulsified and developed a light, milky texture. I then rinsed it away.

My skin felt softer and less stripped afterward than it did with some traditional body cleansers. This was especially appealing during colder weather, when my arms and legs felt dry.

The cleansing oil was not a treatment for a skin condition, but I enjoyed it as a gentler-feeling body cleanser.

Daily moisturizer

The daily moisturizer had a lightweight texture and a citrus-like scent.

Although the formula did not feel heavy, I initially found it somewhat difficult to spread evenly. It applied more comfortably when I warmed a small amount between my hands before pressing it onto my face.

I would have preferred a formula that spread more easily straight from the container, but I liked the lightweight finish once it had settled.

Hair serum

The hair serum made the dry ends of my hair feel softer and smoother.

However, the texture felt somewhat sticky or gooey, and it was easy for me to apply too much. Because of that, I preferred using a very small amount of plain argan oil on my ends.

Someone with especially dry, coarse, or processed hair might appreciate the richer serum texture more than I did.

Body lotion

The body lotion felt lighter than I expected.

Its texture looked thick when dispensed, but it spread into a relatively lightweight layer. I expected more richness from an argan-oil body product, particularly for winter use.

It was comfortable for everyday application, but I would have preferred a heavier cream for the driest areas of my body.

Packaging problem

The argan-oil bottle in my set leaked inside the packaging before I began using it.

Unfortunately, it continued leaking after each use and left oil on my dresser. I eventually transferred the remaining oil into a clean, completely dry bottle with a tightly sealing cap.

Because of this experience, I would not have packed the original bottle in my luggage. Anyone traveling with a facial oil should make sure the cap is secure and place the bottle inside a sealed plastic pouch.

I do not know whether my bottle was defective or whether the packaging commonly leaked.

What I liked

The set allowed me to test several products without buying full sizes.
The pure argan oil felt lighter than several oils I had tried previously.
One or two drops were enough for my face.
The body cleansing oil left my skin feeling soft and comfortable.

The pure argan oil was also useful because it could be applied in small amounts to several dry areas.

Final thoughts

Overall, the set was a practical way to explore the Josie Maran line before deciding whether to purchase any full-size products.

My favorites were the body cleansing oil and pure argan oil. The daily moisturizer was pleasant but not especially easy to spread, while the body lotion was lighter than I wanted for cold weather. The hair serum softened my ends, but I preferred the texture and simplicity of using a small amount of argan oil instead.

The leaking bottle was the biggest disappointment and made the oil unsuitable for travel in its original packaging.

I would have recommended this type of set to someone curious about the brand who did not want to commit to several full-size products. Rainbow Research French Green Clay was one of my favorite powder masks when my skin felt oily or congested.

The product contained only French green-clay powder and did not have added fragrance. I liked being able to mix a fresh portion for each application and adjust the consistency myself.

Although premixed masks were more convenient, I preferred the simplicity and flexibility of the powder format.

Texture and preparation

The clay was a fine green powder that needed to be mixed with liquid before application.

I received the most consistent result when I placed a small amount of powder in a clean bowl and gradually added plain water. Adding the water a little at a time helped prevent the mixture from becoming too thin.

I mixed it until it formed a smooth paste that was easy to spread without dripping.

The individual packet usually contained more powder than I needed for one facial mask. I generally used approximately half a packet.

I prepared only enough wet mixture for one application and discarded any leftovers rather than storing them.

Application

I applied a thin, even layer to clean skin, avoiding my eyes, lips, and any broken or irritated areas.

I followed the timing on the product packaging and rinsed the mask away with lukewarm water. I did not scrub my face while removing it.

After rinsing, I applied moisturizer because clay masks could leave my skin feeling tight when I used too much or left them on too long.

A facial mask should be removed immediately if it causes burning, persistent stinging, itching, or unusual redness.

How it felt on my skin

After using the mask, my face usually felt cleaner, smoother, and less oily.

The clay appeared to absorb some of the surface oil on my skin. This made it especially satisfying when my complexion felt shiny or when I had been wearing heavier skincare and makeup.

The result was temporary. I did not consider the mask a way to remove toxins from my skin or body.

Acne and pores

I originally used this mask when I had acne, blackheads, whiteheads, and visible pores.

Looking back, I would not describe it as a treatment that healed acne or permanently tightened pores. It sometimes reduced surface shine and made my skin look temporarily smoother, but it did not replace a consistent acne routine.

When my skin was already inflamed, dry, or irritated, the clay could feel too drying. I therefore preferred using it selectively rather than automatically applying it during every breakout.

Ingredients I no longer recommend adding

When I first wrote this review, I suggested mixing the clay with kitchen ingredients such as milk, yogurt, honey, egg white, and lemon juice.

I no longer recommend those recipes.

Lemon juice can be irritating and may react with sunlight. Raw egg is unnecessary for skincare and does not provide lasting skin tightening. Food ingredients can also introduce allergens, inconsistent acidity, and contamination risks.

The simplest method is to mix the clay with plain water according to the product directions.

Frequency of use

I treated this as an occasional mask rather than a daily treatment.

How often it can be used comfortably depends on skin type and the rest of the skincare routine. Someone with oily skin may tolerate it more frequently than someone with dry, dehydrated, or sensitive skin.

If my skin felt tight, flaky, or irritated afterward, I used the mask less often and focused on gentle cleansing and moisturizing.

My Experience Using Unrefined Shea Butter on Very Dry, Irritated Skin

Editor’s note: This article documents my personal experience from 2011. It is not medical advice, and I cannot determine whether the changes I observed were caused by shea butter, other products, changes in my environment, or the natural course of my skin condition.

Several years before writing this review, I began developing persistent patches of dry, itchy and irritated skin on my neck and arm. The irritation began while I was working at a retail job. I wondered whether dust, heat, sweating or another workplace exposure contributed, but I never confirmed the cause.

Scratching made the areas more irritated, and sweat often made my neck feel uncomfortable. A doctor prescribed medication that helped control the itching, although the symptoms later returned.

Over time, I tried several products, including hydrocortisone, ointments, antibiotic ointment, lotions, creams and different plant oils. I also made changes to my diet. Because I was trying many things and did not follow a controlled routine, I cannot determine which changes affected my skin.

After leaving that job, the patch on my arm gradually improved, although some discoloration remained.

Why I tried unrefined shea butter

I became interested in unrefined shea butter because it is a rich, occlusive moisturizer. I hoped it would make the dry areas feel softer and more comfortable. This was an experiment with a moisturizer, not an attempt to replace professional eczema treatment. Moisturizers can help support dry skin, but persistent, severe or worsening rashes should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.

The following timeline reflects only what I observed while using the product.

Week 1-2:

I applied a small amount of shea butter to the dry areas in the morning and evening. On some days, I reapplied it during the day. The texture initially felt heavy and seemed to remain on the surface of my skin, but it gradually absorbed. After approximately four days, the areas felt less dry. The change was subtle rather than dramatic.

During the second week, the skin became redder and more inflamed. I was also scratching and picking at it, which likely contributed to the irritation. The dry surface began peeling, and the skin underneath looked very red.

At the time, I wondered whether the peeling meant the area was improving. Looking back, I should not have interpreted redness or peeling as evidence that a product was working. I also developed several small bumps on the irritated skin. I could not determine whether they were related to the shea butter, sweating, scratching or the underlying skin condition.

When I tested the product on part of my face, I also developed a blemish. I stopped using it as a facial moisturizer since it's too heavy for my face.

Week 3-4

By the third and fourth weeks, some areas looked less red and swollen than they had during the second week. The surface also felt smoother and more moisturized. The itching had not completely stopped. The patch on my arm appeared smaller, although the discoloration remained.

I had used approximately one-third of the jar by this point because I was applying it frequently. I also became less aware of its natural nutty scent over time.

I enjoyed using the shea butter as a rich body moisturizer, particularly on areas that felt dry. However, I could not conclude that it was treating the underlying condition.

My application became inconsistent after the original four-week period, and I did not continue taking regular photographs.

September 17, 2011 update

By September, the patch on my arm was no longer visible. The patch behind my neck appeared smaller, while the areas on the sides of my neck had changed less noticeably.

Because I had stopped working in the original environment, changed my routine and used the product inconsistently, I cannot attribute these changes solely to shea butter.

I occasionally noticed bumps in the areas where the product was applied heavily, so I reduced how often I used it there.

I continued using shea butter on my lips and other dry areas because I liked its rich texture. I also applied it to stretch marks on my inner thighs. The skin temporarily felt softer and looked more moisturized, but I cannot determine whether the product changed the stretch marks themselves.

Laura Mercier Mineral Powder SPF 15 Review: Radiant Finish and Wear

After trying several mineral foundations over the years, I eventually settled on Laura Mercier Mineral Powder SPF 15.

I had previously used both the BareMinerals Original and Matte formulas. I appreciated the more matte appearance of BareMinerals Matte, but I generally preferred a little radiance rather than a completely flat finish.

The Laura Mercier powder gave me the softly glowing finish I was looking for while still providing enough coverage to even out my complexion.

Texture and application

The powder felt finely milled and blended easily with my mineral-foundation brushes.

I applied a small amount to the lid, worked it into a kabuki brush, tapped away the excess, and buffed it onto my face in thin layers.

It could be used alone as a light foundation or applied over BB cream, tinted moisturizer, or liquid foundation. When I wore it over another base product, I used less powder so the finished makeup would not look too heavy.

The closable sifter was one of my favorite packaging features. It reduced spills and made the loose powder more practical for travel, although the jar itself was relatively large.

Coverage

The coverage was sheer to medium on my skin.

One light layer helped even out my skin tone and soften the appearance of minor discoloration. I could add another thin layer where I wanted more coverage, but it did not completely conceal more noticeable blemishes or pigmentation.

When I needed fuller coverage, I preferred using concealer beneath the powder rather than continuing to build multiple powder layers.

Finish

The Laura Mercier powder gave my complexion a natural, softly radiant finish.

It was not completely matte, but it did not initially look overly shiny on my skin. The subtle pearlescent quality appeared to contribute to the glow.

As the day progressed and the powder mixed with my skin’s natural oils, the finish sometimes became dewier. I enjoyed this effect because it made the foundation look less powdery and more natural.

Someone who prefers a fully matte complexion might find the finish too luminous.

Wear and oil control

The powder held up reasonably well through most of the day.

I experienced mild shine around midday, particularly through my T-zone, but it was manageable. Blotting the area or applying a very small amount of finishing powder helped reduce the shine.

The foundation did not become noticeably patchy on me, and I did not see the shade turn significantly darker or more orange during wear.

Natural Beige (peach beige/ for fair to medium skin tones)

Comparison with BareMinerals

The Laura Mercier powder gave me a more radiant finish than BareMinerals Matte.

BareMinerals Original also produced a glow, but that formula sometimes made my skin feel itchy. The Laura Mercier powder did not cause the same reaction, even when I became warm or sweaty.

Both formulas contained bismuth oxychloride, so I could not conclude that this ingredient alone caused my reaction to BareMinerals Original. There may have been another difference in the formulas or in how they interacted with my skin.

The Laura Mercier powder ultimately felt more comfortable and produced the finish I preferred.

Using it as a setting powder

Although it was marketed as a mineral foundation, I also used a small amount over tinted moisturizer, BB cream, or liquid foundation.

Because the powder was pigmented, it added some coverage rather than functioning like a completely translucent setting powder. This worked well when my base product was too sheer.

I had to use a light hand. Applying too much over an existing foundation could make the result look heavy.

SPF 15

The powder was labeled SPF 15.

I appreciated having SPF in the formula, but I would not rely on a light layer of mineral foundation as my primary sun protection. I would use a separate broad-spectrum sunscreen underneath and treat the SPF in the makeup as supplemental.

Shade range

The shade range available at the time was limited.

The selection appeared to focus primarily on fair through tan complexions and did not offer enough options for many deeper skin tones. Even within the available shades, undertone choices were limited.

Anyone purchasing a complexion product should test the shade in natural daylight and observe it for several hours when possible.

Laura Mercier Mineral Powder SPF 15 became my preferred mineral foundation because of its comfortable wear and softly radiant finish.

It provided enough coverage to even out my complexion without looking completely matte. I especially liked how the powder became slightly dewier as it mixed with my skin’s natural oils throughout the day.

The main drawbacks were the limited shade range and mild midday shine. It was also important to apply it in thin layers because too much powder could look heavy.

For my combination skin and preference for a natural glow, it performed better than the other mineral foundations I had tried at the time.

MISSHA Tea Tree Sheet Mask Review: Hydrating but Not an Acne Treatment

Editor’s note: This is a historical review of an older MISSHA Tea Tree sheet mask that I purchased in Hong Kong. MISSHA now sells other tea-tree masks, but the formula, packaging, price, and availability may differ from the version discussed here.

I bought a box of MISSHA Tea Tree sheet masks while visiting a MISSHA store in Hong Kong.

The packaging described the product as a cotton sheet mask made with a tea tree ingredient for troubled-looking skin. I was interested in it because I had acne and lingering marks from previous blemishes.

A sales associate recommended the mask as part of a routine for clearer-looking skin. She told me that using it only two or three times would not be enough and suggested applying one every day for a month.

I was glad that I purchased only one box instead of the three boxes she initially recommended. Using a disposable sheet mask every day would have been expensive and would have created considerably more packaging waste.

The associate’s personal experience was also anecdotal. Her clear-looking complexion did not establish that this particular mask had cleared her skin, especially because makeup and other skincare products may also have affected its appearance.

Fit and application

I applied the mask after cleansing and toner, following the package instructions.

I unfolded the sheet, positioned it over my face, and left it on for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. After removing it, I gently patted the remaining essence into my skin rather than rinsing it away.

There was usually enough essence left in the package to apply to my neck. I used it immediately rather than saving the opened packet for another day.

How it felt on my skin

The strongest benefit was hydration.

My skin felt softer and more moisturized immediately after I removed the mask. The essence left a fresh feeling without producing dramatic visible changes.

I did not experience immediate clearing of my acne or noticeable fading of post-acne marks. A single sheet mask is unlikely to produce that type of result, and I did not use the masks consistently enough to evaluate meaningful longer-term changes.

I would describe this primarily as a hydrating sheet mask with a tea tree ingredient rather than an acne treatment.

Tea tree ingredient

Tea tree appeared near the end of the ingredient list on the version I purchased.

That suggested it was not one of the dominant ingredients, but an ingredient list does not reveal the exact percentage. Ingredients present at very low concentrations may also appear in a different order near the end of a cosmetic label.

I therefore could not determine how much tea tree the mask contained or whether it contributed significantly to the results.

I would not replace this mask by applying undiluted tea tree essential oil directly to blemishes. Concentrated essential oils can irritate the skin, and a professionally formulated cosmetic is not equivalent to applying pure oil.

Scent

The mask did not smell strongly like the tea tree oil products I had previously encountered.

To me, the fragrance was more citrus-like and slightly reminiscent of dish detergent. I did not find it especially pleasant, although the scent was not strong enough to prevent me from finishing the masks.

People who are sensitive to fragranced skincare may want to check the current ingredient list before using a similar product.

Daily use and parabens

When I originally wrote this review, I advised against daily use partly because the formula contained parabens.

My view has since changed. I would not judge the safety of a cosmetic solely by the presence or absence of parabens.

My main objections to using this sheet mask every day were the cost, the amount of single-use waste, and the possibility that frequent exposure to fragrance or other ingredients could irritate some complexions.

A sheet mask can be an occasional hydrating addition to a routine, but it is not essential for clear skin.

Price and value

The mask cost approximately $1.99 per sheet on the MISSHA U.S. website when I originally wrote this review.

I paid approximately HKD 235 for a box in Hong Kong, which was around $30 at the exchange rate I recorded at the time. The Hong Kong price felt high compared with the U.S. listing.

Because the effect was mainly temporary hydration, I did not think it offered enough value for me to repurchase an entire box at that price.

I would not purchase a month’s supply with the expectation that the masks would clear my complexion. Someone who enjoys fragranced sheet masks and wants temporary hydration may appreciate it, but it should not replace a consistent acne routine or professional treatment when acne is persistent.

I would not have repurchased the box at the price I paid.

I loved the finish of Smashbox HALO Hydrating Perfecting Powder.

Smashbox marketed HALO as a radiant loose powder with sheer-to-buildable coverage and a built-in grinder that shaved off a fresh amount of powder for each application.

The powder cost approximately $59 and contained 0.75 ounces when I purchased it. Although the initial price seemed high, the large amount of product and the unique packaging made it feel like a reasonable value to me.

Texture and finish

HALO gave my complexion the right amount of luminosity without looking excessively shiny.

It looked less dry and powdery than many mineral foundations I had used. That was what I understood the brand to mean by a “hydrating” finish: it did not actually feel like a moisturizer, but it made my skin look softer and less chalky.

The powder blended smoothly over my complexion and did not noticeably cling to my dry patches. It also made some texture and fine lines look less prominent while I was wearing it.

I would describe this as a temporary cosmetic effect rather than an anti-aging treatment.

Coverage

The coverage was sheer but could be built to approximately light-to-medium on my skin.

It worked best when I had relatively little discoloration and mainly wanted to even out my complexion. It did not provide the same level of coverage as the BareMinerals foundations I had used.

When I needed more coverage, I applied HALO over tinted moisturizer, BB cream, or liquid foundation. It added a small amount of pigment while softening the appearance of the base underneath.

I could build it in thin layers without immediately creating a cakey finish, but it was not a full-coverage foundation.

Using it as a setting powder

HALO worked well over liquid and cream complexion products. A light layer helped set my foundation while preserving a natural glow. It did not create the flat, visibly powdered finish I experienced with some setting powders.

Shade match

Light was my best match in this formula and was somewhat comparable to BareMinerals Medium Beige on my complexion. The shade appeared darker than I expected from the name. Instead of recommending that everyone automatically buy a lighter shade, I would advise testing it on the face and checking the color in natural light.

Shade names do not translate consistently across brands or even across different formulas from the same brand. The shade selection was limited to six colors at the time, which did not adequately accommodate the full range of complexions and undertones.

Built-in grinder

The built-in grinder was my favorite feature. Turning the mechanism shaved a small amount of pressed product into fresh loose powder. It offered some of the convenience of a compact while producing the texture and finish of loose powder. I don't think there is any product out there that is as unique as this. I wished more powder compacts used a similar design.

I liked being able to control how much powder I released. Grinding only a small amount helped reduce waste and prevented me from loading too much onto my brush.

The disadvantages were that powder residue collected around the grinder and mirror, and I could not easily see how much product remained inside.

Included brush

My set included a small brush.

It was adequate for quick applications, but it was not my preferred tool for using the powder over my entire face. The brush shed during use and did not distribute the product as evenly as my regular powder brushes. For travel, I preferred carrying a small retractable brush that protected the bristles and gave me better control.

Wear

The powder wore well on my combination skin. I experienced some shine as the day progressed, but the finish generally became dewier rather than visibly greasy. I did not notice significant oxidation about halfway through the day. The formula provided some oil absorption, but it was not an intensely mattifying powder. Someone with consistently oily skin might need to blot or use a more targeted setting powder through the T-zone.

Comparison with BareMinerals

HALO was not a direct replacement for BareMinerals.

BareMinerals offered more buildable foundation coverage, while HALO gave me a softer and more naturally radiant finish. The BareMinerals Original formula sometimes looked too shiny on my skin, whereas HALO produced a subtler glow.

I preferred HALO when finish and comfort were more important than coverage. I preferred a traditional mineral foundation when I needed to cover more discoloration.

Formula notes

The formula did not contain talc, parabens, or bismuth oxychloride in the version I purchased.

The absence of bismuth oxychloride interested me because some mineral powders containing that ingredient had felt uncomfortable on my skin. However, the presence or absence of one ingredient does not determine whether a product will suit everyone.

The ingredient list also included mica, silica, synthetic wax, dimethicone, goji extract, a peptide, and gold pigment.

I would not rely on the presence of gold, minerals, extracts, or peptides as evidence that the powder treated wrinkles or changed the structure of my skin. My positive opinion was based on the product’s finish, coverage, comfort, and packaging.

Price and value

At approximately $59, HALO was more expensive than many mineral foundations.

However, the 0.75-ounce compact contained considerably more product than the full-sized BareMinerals foundations I was comparing it with at the time. Because I used only a small amount during each application, it lasted a long time.

The built-in grinder also made the product feel more distinctive and practical.

Whether it represented good value depended on the desired coverage. Someone expecting a full-coverage foundation might have been disappointed, while someone seeking a sheer luminous powder could have found the price easier to justify.

Packaging problem

After several months, the compact’s closure broke. I could still close the case, but it no longer felt secure enough for travel. I had to place a rubber band around the compact to prevent it from opening inside my makeup bag. This was disappointing, particularly for a product at this price. A twist-lock lid or sturdier closure would have been more dependable. The packaging was also not refillable, even though the grinder mechanism would have made a refill system appealing.

Keeping the compact clean

I used clean brushes and kept the compact closed when it was not in use.

When powder accumulated around the grinder or mirror, I removed the loose residue with a clean, dry tissue. I avoided allowing water or cleaning liquid to enter the powder or internal mechanism.

I also washed my makeup brushes regularly and allowed them to dry completely before using them with the compact.

It did not provide enough coverage to replace BareMinerals as a traditional mineral foundation. However, it worked beautifully as a sheer complexion powder or as a finishing layer over tinted moisturizer and foundation.

The built-in grinder was innovative and helped justify the cost, although the broken closure and nonrefillable packaging were significant disappointments.

For my combination skin, HALO offered a good balance between a matte setting powder and a highly reflective mineral foundation. I would have repurchased it primarily for its finish rather than its historical anti-aging claims.

I discovered Out of Africa Unrefined Shea Butter while searching for a simple, fragrance-free moisturizer for very dry skin.

The product contained 100% unrefined shea butter and came in an 8-ounce jar. I was especially interested in its rich texture and minimal formula.

This review focuses on the product’s texture, scent and usability. I discuss my historical experience with dry, irritated skin and the accompanying photographs in a separate personal skin diary.

Texture and consistency

The shea butter was firmly compressed inside the jar. Because my home was not particularly warm, it remained fairly solid at room temperature.

The surface softened slightly when I pressed it with my finger, but I usually had to scrape out a small amount. The initial texture felt thick, sticky and somewhat dough-like.

After rubbing it between my hands for several seconds, the shea butter melted into an oily balm. The transformation reminded me of Egyptian Magic, although this product felt thicker and took slightly longer to melt.

A dime-sized amount was more than I needed for both arms. Because the formula was so concentrated, starting with a much smaller amount produced a more comfortable result.

It initially felt heavy on my skin. Most of the oily sensation diminished after approximately 15 to 30 minutes, although the exact absorption time depended on how much I applied.

Scent

The unrefined shea butter had a natural nutty and slightly woody scent.

It reminded me of almonds, peanuts or another type of nut, although I found the aroma difficult to describe precisely. The scent was noticeable when I first applied it but gradually faded.

I did not find it unpleasant, but someone accustomed to unscented or fragranced body creams might need time to adjust to the natural aroma.

The product did not contain added fragrance in the version I tested.

How I used it on my body

I primarily used the shea butter as a rich moisturizer for my arms, hands, lips and other areas that felt very dry.

It was especially useful after frequent handwashing, washing dishes or doing household chores. I kept the jar on my desk and applied a small amount when my hands felt dry.

Because the product was so heavy, I preferred it for targeted areas rather than applying a thick layer over my entire body.

It also worked as a lip moisturizer for me. I liked it as an alternative when I wanted a simple balm without added flavor or fragrance.

My experience using it on my face

The shea butter was too thick and heavy for regular use on my face.

When I tested it as a facial moisturizer, I developed several blemishes. I cannot prove that the shea butter caused every breakout, but the texture did not appear to suit my acne-prone complexion.

I occasionally tried a very small amount around the outer under-eye area when my skin felt especially dry. It provided a heavy layer of moisture, but I found it too rich for everyday use.

Based on my experience, I preferred using it on my body, hands and lips.

Application tips

I received the best results when I used much less product than I initially thought I needed.

I scraped out a small amount with clean, dry fingers, warmed it between my palms and pressed it onto dry areas. Rubbing it between my hands first made it easier to spread.

When the surface became particularly firm, I gently loosened a small section with a clean, dry cosmetic spatula. I would avoid repeatedly placing a household fork into the container because keeping the jar and applicator clean is important.

I also would not add water or oils directly to the entire jar. When I wanted a softer application, I mixed one small, single-use portion with a drop of body oil in my palm immediately before applying it.

Using it on dry, irritated skin

I originally bought this product while searching for ways to make persistently dry and irritated areas feel more comfortable.

The shea butter helped the surface of my skin feel softer and less tight. However, I do not consider it a cure for eczema, dermatitis, scars, stretch marks or any other medical condition.

My skin was changing during the same period for several reasons, including changes in my environment, scratching, sweating and the use of other products. I therefore cannot attribute longer-term changes solely to the shea butter.

Persistent or worsening skin irritation should be evaluated by an appropriate healthcare professional.

Company and sourcing information

At the time I purchased the product, Out of Africa promoted its shea butter as traditionally produced in West Africa and Fair Trade Certified.

Because sourcing arrangements and certifications can change, readers should review the current packaging and company information rather than relying on this historical article for present-day certification details.

Supporting responsible businesses is important to me, but I also try to distinguish independently verified information from a company’s own marketing claims.

Availability

I originally discovered the product through Drugstore.com and had difficulty finding it in local stores. I checked Walgreens but found only a small selection of the brand’s soaps at the time.

Those retailers and product selections have since changed, so this article should not be used as a current store-availability guide.

Final thoughts

Out of Africa Unrefined Shea Butter was an effective heavy moisturizer for the driest areas of my body.

I liked its simple formula, concentrated texture and lack of added fragrance. A small amount covered a surprisingly large area, making the jar last longer than a typical body lotion.

The disadvantages were its firm consistency, slow absorption and heavy feel. It was also too rich for my acne-prone face.

I would recommend considering it as a body moisturizer for someone who enjoys thick, balm-like products. I would not present it as a medical treatment or assume it will suit every skin type.

MISSHA M Cover BB Balm Pact Review: Pale Shade and Cream-to-Powder Finish

I first learned about this BB balm while shopping at a MISSHA store in Hong Kong.

I initially bought the MISSHA M Signature Real Complete liquid BB Cream because I had never tried the brand before and thought the bottle would last longer. The sales associate also showed me this cream-to-powder BB balm in a compact and recommended both products for my skin.

She told me that the BB cream could moisturize my complexion, make it appear brighter, and help improve the look of my post-acne marks. I now consider those sales claims rather than guaranteed skincare results.

I later found the balm pact on the MISSHA U.S. website and purchased it during a sale.

Product format

The M Cover BB Balm came in a large decorative compact with a separate compartment for the included sponge.

The product had a solid cream texture that transformed into a more powder-like finish as I blended it over my skin. It was convenient and less likely to spill than liquid BB cream.

The compact was wider than my MAC compacts and my Smashbox HALO powder. Although the packaging was attractive, it took up considerable space in my makeup bag.

Texture and application

The balm had a smooth, creamy texture when I first picked it up with the sponge.

It felt lightweight when I applied a thin layer, but it became heavy and cakey when I tried to build more coverage. I received the best result when I used very little product and patted it onto my skin rather than rubbing it.

The cream-to-powder finish initially felt silky, but it did not blend smoothly over all areas of my complexion. It tended to collect around dry patches and fine lines.

Because of that, careful skin preparation and a light application were essential.

Coverage

The BB balm gave me light-to-medium coverage.

It helped even out minor discoloration, but it did not fully conceal blemishes or post-acne marks. Adding more product did not improve the coverage enough to justify the heavier finish.

I preferred using concealer only where needed instead of continuing to layer the balm.

Shade match

I purchased the shade No. 23.

Despite the number and beige description, the color looked very pale on my complexion. It was lighter than the No. 23 shade in the liquid MISSHA BB cream I owned.

The difference showed me that identical shade numbers do not necessarily match across formulas.

The balm remained too light for me even during winter. It made my overall complexion look washed out rather than naturally brighter.

Before republishing this article, I would verify the exact shade name printed on the compact. Historical MISSHA formulas used several different names for shades No. 21 and No. 23.

Finish

The product created a mostly matte, cream-to-powder finish.

Despite the matte appearance, my skin still developed some shine during the day. It did not provide enough oil control to remain fresh from morning through evening.

At the same time, the powdery finish emphasized dry patches and fine lines. This combination made the product difficult to recommend specifically for either dry or oily skin.

It simply did not balance well with my complexion.

Wear

The balm did not last all day on me.

It required touch-ups as the finish became uneven and shiny. Areas around fine lines and dry patches also became more noticeable as the day progressed.

Applying a thicker layer made the wear problems worse, so I kept the application as light as possible.

Fragrance

The BB balm had a noticeable fragrance.

The scent was stronger than I preferred for a facial makeup product and remained noticeable during application. Someone who avoids fragranced complexion products may not enjoy it.

I did not experience immediate irritation, but fragrance tolerance varies.

SPF 50+ PA+++

I appreciated that the compact was labeled SPF 50+ PA+++.

However, I would not now depend on a thin layer of BB balm as my only sunscreen. Applying enough makeup to achieve the amount used in sunscreen testing would likely create a much heavier finish than I normally wear.

I would apply a separate sunscreen underneath and treat the SPF in the balm as supplemental protection.

Skincare claims

The product was promoted with ingredients such as collagen, caviar, squalane, and moringa oil.

I cannot determine whether those ingredients provided meaningful long-term skincare benefits. My review is based on the balm’s coverage, texture, comfort, and visible finish—not on claims that it repaired, nourished, or transformed my skin.

It did not visibly fade my post-acne marks during the period I used it.

Using the pale shade

Because the shade was too light for my entire face, I occasionally applied a very small amount to the tops of my cheekbones as a brightening makeup product.

It added pale coverage rather than shimmer, so I would not describe it as a traditional highlighter.

I would not use it as an eyelid primer. It was a fragranced face product, and its creamy texture tended to settle into lines.

Website information

When I originally purchased the product, I found that the U.S. MISSHA website did not provide as much product and ingredient information as I wanted.

This made it difficult to compare formulas before ordering online. Because the brand’s website and product pages may have changed, readers should check the current listing and package rather than relying on this historical review.

Bare Escentuals marketed Prime Time Oil Control as a water-based, oil-free and silicone-free primer designed to reduce shine before applying mineral foundation.

I was interested in the product because I had combination, sensitive and acne-prone skin at the time. I also wanted an alternative to the silicone-based Smashbox primer I had been using.

Unfortunately, this primer did not work well with my skin or foundation routine.

Texture and application

The primer had a thick, slightly glue-like texture. It dried more quickly than the silicone-based primers I had previously used, but it was difficult to spread evenly.

I had to use a small amount, distribute it very lightly and pat it over my skin. If I rubbed it too much, the product began rolling into small flakes.

The pilling became more noticeable when I buffed mineral foundation over it. In some areas, I had to brush or rub away pieces of primer before continuing with my makeup.

Even after the primer had dried, touching or rubbing my face sometimes caused more of the product to lift and clump.

Finish and oil control

The primer initially left my skin looking matte and reduced the appearance of shine.

For that reason, I could understand why someone with consistently oily skin might be interested in it, particularly during warm weather.

However, the matte effect came with a significant drawback for me. The primer made my skin look dry and emphasized existing dry patches and texture.

Appearance under foundation

Instead of making my foundation look smoother, the primer made it appear heavier and more uneven.

My mineral foundation looked cakey over it, especially in areas where the primer had pilled. Buffing the powder also disturbed the layer underneath and created additional flakes.

I preferred the appearance of my foundation when I applied it without this primer.

The product also did not noticeably blur or minimize the appearance of my pores. This was disappointing because smoothing the skin was one of the main reasons I wanted to use a primer.

Skin sensitivity

I did not notice new breakouts or significant irritation while testing the product.

However, that does not mean it will be suitable for everyone with sensitive or acne-prone skin. Skin reactions can vary, and the product’s drying texture may be uncomfortable for people who have dehydrated or flaky areas.

Scent and packaging

Although the primer was marketed as fragrance-free, it still had a noticeable scent from the formula itself. To me, it smelled somewhat synthetic, and I did not enjoy it.

The bottle contained 1 ounce of product, which was the same amount as the full-size Smashbox primer I was comparing it with. The Bare Escentuals packaging simply appeared smaller.

The primer cost approximately $21 when I purchased it.

What I liked

It was silicone-free, oil-free and marketed as fragrance-free.
It dried quickly.
It initially created a matte finish.
I did not notice new breakouts while testing it.
It may appeal to people who prefer a very matte base.

What did not work for me

The texture felt thick and glue-like.
It was difficult to spread evenly.
The product pilled when rubbed or blended.
Buffing mineral foundation over it caused more flaking.

Final thoughts

This was one of the least successful primers I had tried at the time.

Although it created a matte finish and did not noticeably irritate my skin, the application problems outweighed those benefits. It pilled, clumped and interfered with the way my mineral foundation applied.

I would not have repurchased it. I preferred my Smashbox primer, even though it contained silicone, because it created a smoother base and worked more reliably with my foundation.

Someone with very oily skin who uses a patting technique rather than buffing may have a different experience. For my combination skin and mineral-foundation routine, however, this primer was not a good match.

I bought several Everyday Minerals foundation samples and recently tested them again to see whether my opinion had changed.

During my earlier testing, I thought I had found a suitable shade. However, after wearing the foundations for longer periods, several colors appeared too orange or yellow on my complexion. Some shades also looked darker as the day progressed.

Light Olive initially seemed promising, but it eventually appeared too dark on me. Medium Beige Neutral blended into my skin more naturally, although it did not provide the amount of coverage I wanted.

I contacted Everyday Minerals for shade-matching advice. The company responded within approximately two days and said that Medium Beige might be close to the BareMinerals Medium Beige shade I was using at the time. The representative also suggested ordering samples to compare several possible matches.

I had previously purchased the Golden Medium pressed powder, which was later discontinued. When applied with a light hand, it blended reasonably well with my skin. However, I found its coverage light, and it did not last throughout the entire day on me.

The foundation finishes I tested

At the time, Everyday Minerals offered several base formulas with different finishes and coverage levels:

Original Glo: A luminous formula intended to provide lighter coverage.
Semi-Matte: A softer, slightly dewy finish with moderate coverage.
Matte: A matte formula described as offering fuller coverage.
Intensive: A more absorbent, matte formula intended for higher coverage.

These were the brand’s general descriptions. My results varied depending on the formula.

Semi-Matte gave my skin a noticeable glow, but it did not provide the same finish or coverage I received from the BareMinerals Original foundation.

Matte helped even out my complexion and covered very minor imperfections. On my skin, however, the coverage was closer to light-to-medium than full.

Intensive provided the most coverage of the formulas I tested, but it also felt somewhat drying.

Shade swatches and coverage

Many of these shades appeared too yellow or orange for my complexion. Medium Beige Neutral blended most naturally into my skin.

Although the Matte formula was described as buildable and full coverage, I experienced sheer-to-medium coverage even after applying additional layers. It worked best when I wanted to lightly even out my skin tone rather than cover more noticeable discoloration.

After blending the Everyday Minerals swatches, several shades were still visible against my skin. Above them, I applied one layer of BareMinerals Medium Beige.

In my comparison, one layer of the BareMinerals foundation covered minor discoloration more effectively. I was also able to build it to a higher level of coverage more easily.

This comparison reflects how the products performed on my skin with my application technique. Results may differ depending on skin type, preparation, brush and desired coverage.

What I liked

The products were relatively affordable at the time of testing.
Sample sizes made it easier to test several shades before purchasing a full-size jar.
The powder felt finely milled.
The shade range was extensive.
Several finishes were available.
The closable sifters helped reduce spills.
The jars had wide lids that made it easier to swirl a brush in the powder.
The formulas did not cause the itching I had experienced with some other mineral foundations.

What did not work for me

My face became shiny while wearing several of the formulas, even when I used finishing powder.
Some shades appeared darker or warmer as the day progressed.
Many of the colors I tested looked too yellow or orange for my complexion.
I found it difficult to identify a reliable shade match.
The coverage was lighter than I expected.
I did not get all-day wear.
The website swatches did not accurately predict how the shades would look on my skin.
On dry areas, the powder emphasized texture and fine lines unless I prepared my skin with moisturizer.

These were my personal results and do not mean that every formula will behave the same way on another person’s skin.

Ways I used the unmatched samples

I did not immediately discard the samples that were not suitable as all-over foundation. A few warmer shades worked in very small amounts as powder over under-eye concealer.

This did not work with every shade, and I used only a light layer. A noticeably orange or overly dark shade would not be suitable for this purpose.

Application tips

Mineral foundation generally looked better on me when I applied a small amount at a time.

I sprinkled a small quantity of powder into the lid, worked it evenly into my brush and tapped away the excess. I then buffed it onto my skin in thin layers until I reached my preferred coverage.

Applying too much powder at once made the result more likely to look heavy or emphasize dry areas. Preparing my skin with a lightweight moisturizer also helped the powder apply more evenly.

Final thoughts

I had a love-hate relationship with the Everyday Minerals foundations.

I appreciated the fine texture, shade selection, sample options and relatively affordable prices. However, I struggled with shade matching, shine, changing color throughout the day, limited wear time and lighter-than-expected coverage.

Of the formulas I tested, Intensive gave me the most coverage but felt the driest. Matte provided a more balanced finish, although it still did not give me the fuller coverage I preferred.

Facial Mists I Used for Summer and Makeup Application

During warm weather, I enjoyed carrying a facial mist because it felt cooling and refreshing after spending time in the heat.

I also used certain mists during makeup application. Depending on the formula, a light mist could help my foundation look less powdery or make the layers of makeup appear more blended. However, not every facial spray functions as a true setting spray or extends makeup wear.

How I used facial mists

Sometimes I applied a facial mist after moisturizer and before makeup. I used only a light amount and allowed it to settle before applying the next product.

When using a mist over finished makeup, I held the bottle away from my face and sprayed lightly. Applying too much could leave the makeup overly wet or cause it to move.

I also occasionally misted a clean foundation brush before using it. The brush was only slightly damp rather than wet. This helped certain foundations spread more smoothly for me, although the technique did not work equally well with every formula.

The Body Shop Vitamin E Face Mist

The Body Shop mist was one of the more moisturizing-feeling products in this group.

I liked using it when my skin felt dry or when powdered makeup looked too heavy. A light application helped the finish appear softer on my skin.

Evian Mineral Water Facial Spray

The Evian spray was a simple mineral-water mist.

It did not replace moisturizer for me, but it felt cooling during hot weather. I also used it to lightly dampen my foundation brush before stippling foundation over my skin.

When used over makeup, I sprayed it sparingly. Too much water could disturb the foundation rather than improve it.

Thayers Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel Toner

I sometimes transferred a small amount of the original Thayers toner into a clean travel spray bottle and used it as a refreshing mist.

The formula felt light on my skin, and the spray format made it convenient to use. However, it was still a toner rather than a dedicated makeup-setting spray.

I would not add glycerin, water, essential oils or other ingredients to the toner. Altering a finished formula can affect its texture, stability and preservation.

Anyone with sensitive skin should also remember that witch hazel and botanical ingredients may not suit every complexion.

MAC Fix+

MAC Fix+ was my favorite product in this group for use with makeup.

I especially enjoyed the limited-edition rose version because of its scent. A light application helped powder products look more blended and reduced the overly dry or powdery appearance that I sometimes experienced.

I considered it more of a finishing and refreshing mist than a product that made my makeup completely transfer-proof.

The standard version provided a similar finishing effect without the rose scent.

H2O Plus Oasis Mist

The H2O Plus mist was another formula that felt more moisturizing than a plain water spray.

I liked using it when my skin felt dry and needed a quick refresh. As with the other products, the effect was temporary and did not replace my regular moisturizer.

Because H2O Plus products may no longer be widely available, this portion of the article should be treated as an archive of my experience rather than a current shopping recommendation.

About my earlier ingredient preferences

When I originally wrote this article, I was actively avoiding parabens and planned not to repurchase some products solely because they contained them.

My approach has since become more balanced. I would now consider the complete formulation, how the product performs and how my skin responds rather than judging a cosmetic by the presence or absence of one preservative.

I also would not recommend replacing professionally formulated mists with homemade mixtures of water and glycerin. Water-based products require appropriate preservation and careful formulation.

Tips for carrying a facial mist

A small travel-size bottle can be convenient during hot weather, but it should be kept clean and stored away from excessive heat.

I avoided touching the spray nozzle directly to my skin and did not share the bottle with other people.

If my face felt sweaty, I gently blotted it with a clean tissue before applying more makeup. Spraying mist directly over heavy sweat, oil and makeup did not actually cleanse my skin.

Facial mist also does not replace sun protection. I applied sunscreen as part of my morning skincare routine and followed the product’s directions for reapplication.

Final thoughts

My favorite options depended on how I planned to use them.

MAC Fix+ was my preferred choice for making finished makeup look less powdery. The Body Shop and H2O Plus mists felt more moisturizing on my skin. Evian provided a simple cooling mist, while the Thayers toner was a convenient product that I occasionally used in a spray format.

Facial mists were pleasant additions to my routine, but they were not essential skincare products. They provided a temporary cooling or refreshing effect, while my moisturizer and sunscreen remained the more important parts of my summer skincare routine.

Sephora Collection Advanced Airbrush Brush Set Review

I purchased the Sephora Collection Advanced Airbrush Set primarily because I wanted the foundation brush. At the time, buying the five-piece set offered better value than purchasing the foundation brush separately.

The set included five synthetic brushes:

It also came with a zippered travel case.

Airbrush Powder Brush

The powder brush worked best for applying a light layer of loose or setting powder.

It was not my favorite brush in the set because the bristles felt too soft and sparse for my preferences. I generally prefer a denser brush when I want more controlled powder application.

However, it worked well for lightly dusting powder over the face without applying too much product.

Airbrush Precision Foundation Brush

This was my favorite brush in the set.

The short, dense bristles blended liquid foundation quickly and helped me create a smoother, more even-looking finish. Its rounded shape made it easier to buff foundation around the nose, cheeks and areas where my pores were more noticeable.

I sometimes lightly dampened the clean brush before applying foundation. On my skin, this helped the foundation spread more smoothly and reduced the appearance of heaviness. This technique may not work with every foundation formula, so I would begin with a nearly dry brush rather than a wet one.

Unlike traditional flat foundation brushes, this brush had a fuller, rounded head. It reminded me of a small blush brush with shorter and denser bristles.

I also used it to apply cream or liquid blush. The size worked well for blending color over the cheeks without covering too large an area.

Airbrush Concealer Brush

The concealer brush performed better for me with liquid concealer than with thicker cream formulas.

When I used it with cream concealer, blending took longer than I preferred. With liquid concealer, I could lightly stipple the product over my under-eye area and then soften the edges.

The brush could also be used to apply a cream eyeshadow base or a light wash of color over the eyelid.

Airbrush Crease Brush

I mainly kept this brush as a spare for light blending and cleanup.

The bristles were softer and more flexible than I prefer for detailed crease work. For stronger blending, I preferred my MAC blending brush.

However, the Sephora crease brush worked well for applying a soft wash of color across the eyelid or lightly diffusing the edges of eyeshadow.

Airbrush Shadow Brush

Although this was designed as an eyeshadow brush, I often used it for concealer.

It picked up cream products well and helped blend concealer over small blemishes and the under-eye area. I also used it with loose powder to set concealer in targeted areas.

Its compact shape made it useful for both eye makeup and small areas of the face.

Versatility

One of the strongest features of this set was its versatility.

The foundation brush could also be used for blush. The concealer brush worked for cream eyeshadow or primer. The shadow and crease brushes could be used for targeted concealer application or powder.

Because the brushes had synthetic bristles, I was able to use them with powder, cream and liquid products. However, the final result depended on the product, application technique and amount used rather than the brush fibers alone.

Price and value

The set cost $65 when I purchased it.

At five brushes, that worked out to approximately $13 per brush. Since I already wanted the foundation brush, purchasing the complete set felt like a reasonable value.

The set was especially useful for someone building a basic brush collection because it covered complexion, concealer and eye makeup. However, someone who already owned several brushes might not need every piece.

The Airbrush Precision Foundation Brush was the standout item and the main reason I enjoyed the set. It blended liquid foundation efficiently and also worked well for blush.

The concealer and shadow brushes were useful because they could handle several different products. The powder brush felt too sparse for my preferences, and the crease brush was softer than I wanted for precise blending.

Overall, this was a practical starter set with several multipurpose brushes. I would have rated it higher if the powder and crease brushes had been slightly denser.
