If your life is anything like mine, working mum with two busy daughters, you will constantly be running around and there is always something you haven't done. (I normally can't remember what this is until I collapse on the sofa at 10pm and the cat looks at me, oops that was the other thing 'go to the pet store' argh!)

And to top it all that weight you have been trying to lose for ages just won't budge no matter what you do.

This might be why - Stress!

When you are stressed your deeper mind and body can only think of one possible explanation for your stress and that is FAMINE.

So what does your body do?

It slows down your metabolism - and it makes you overeat, and it stores this excess food on your stomach and your behind, because after all there is a famine!

Some easy ways to lower your stress levels and put some calm back into your day:

Lower your daily caffeine intake.

Try this 2 minute exercise. Place one hand on your heart, the other on your stomach, close your eyes, take some deep belly breaths. While you are doing this think some kind thoughts towards yourself.

Have a bubble bath.

Remember that its ok for you to sit down for a minute and 'just be'.

Try 5 - 10 mins of mindfulness a day. This is such an easy, powerful technique that can make huge changes to how you feel.

Take the dog for a walk (no headphones or phone!)

If you make a list of things that need to be done stick some easy ones on there like - put the dishwasher on, post a letter etc. - no matter how small the task I always enjoy it when I cross it off my to-do list.

Hug someone.

We all know you have to eat less and exercise more to lose weight, so why do so few succeed? Kimberly Willis explains why a slim, healthy body is all in the mind

Weight loss is a complicated business. There are, of course, people who have never had a weight problem who can't imagine any difficulty with food and helpfully say: "Why don't you eat less and exercise more?"

Yes, that is what needs to be done. It's so easy to say, less easy to do.

I am a therapist and my job is helping people overcome whatever it is that is keeping them overweight, using a number of techniques including hypnosis and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique or tapping).

I am usually a dieter's last resort.

When people come to see me for help with weight loss, they do so because they have tried everything else. They think, 'Sure, what have I got to lose?'

It's great to start off with such low expectations!

But I know that I can help them to feel more confident, teach them how to overcome cravings, deal with past issues and feel motivated to exercise more and to become slimmer and healthier.

Dieting, losing weight, becoming slim, it should be easy - right?

After all you just eat less and exercise more.

But, the truth is for many people it's so much more complicated than that.

There are emotional links to food, there are habits, there are feelings associated with eating certain foods.

Sometimes you know when and why these feelings started, and sometimes you don't.

All you know is that when you feel a bit down, alone you stop at the doughnut shop on the way home. You by a box, and start eating, eating and eating, you are not even tasting, and when they are all gone its as if you wake up and wonder what happened.

These emotional links, cravings and attachments are kept going because they are linked to a break down in the energy flow in the body. This break down could have been caused by an emotional incident years ago.

Correct this and you can release yourself from this behaviour.

Tapping on certain acupressure points while thinking of a certain situation allows the mind and body to correct the energy flow.

In my book, The Little Book of Diet Help, there are a number of tapping exercises to work through for specific issues. For example, an unwanted food craving, you say the statements while tapping and the energy disturbance causing this craving can settle.

It feels so natural that sometimes people don't notice a change until they review the week gone by and realise that they didn't stop for doughnuts, they didn't even have to battle a craving.

Kimberly

So what is it and where did it come from?

Years and years ago in a far off country.........

Well actually about 1980, in the USA, a psychologist was working with a patient helping her to overcome a water phobia.

They had worked together for weeks and the lady had only had a slight improvement.

The psychologist, Dr Callahan was at this time also studying acupuncture.

Acupuncture is a treatment, thousands of years old, based on specific points on the body linked to meridians,

Meridians are energy lines in the body along which physical, emotional and spiritual energy flows.

Back to Dr Callahan

One day this same patient came in suffering with a stomach ache. Dr Callahan wondered what would happen if he tapped on the stomach meridian (under the eye). He did this.

The patient suddenly said "It's gone!"

He thought she meant the stomach ache. But she meant the phobia!

She jumped up, went outside and stood by his pool, her fear had gone - and it never came back.

From this amazing result Dr Callahan realised that the mind and body were linked and that the body could be used to help the mind.

He started to work with this and to use 'Tapping' to help people overcome many different issues.

And now I use this technique to help people lose weight. Tapping features in 'The Little Book of Diet Help'.

You can learn in this book how to use tapping to break down the emotional issues which might be stopping you from losing weight.

Personally I like going to the gym. I know its not for everyone - and you should find something that you enjoy doing.

But for me the gym is a place I can hide!

When I am in the gym I don't have a mobile phone on me, or the internet. There are no clients, and no kids to deal with or washing to be put on. Its just for me.

When I used to go to classes like yoga, pilates, zumba etc something would always come up and I would miss a class and get out of the habit, and stop going.

The gym is always there.

But, if you see me at the gym and I ignore you, its nothing personal - I get lost in my own thoughts, sorting out what I need to do for the day, week, year, and don't see anyone around me.

Also I tend to look a bit awful as I don't have any make up on if I am there early, so don't be shocked!

For my clients I always tell them to find an exercise that they enjoy, otherwise they are not going to keep it up. And if you hate the gym, please stop paying the fees!

Little Book. Big Help.

Think you know how to lose weight, but can’t seem to shed those extra pounds? The truth is, most diets don’t work—or, at least, they don’t last. When we diet, we’re so consumed by what we can’t eat that we don’t focus on how we eat, and how eating makes us feel.

That’s where The Little Book of Diet Help comes in.

With this book you’ll learn:

• • • How to recognize your bad eating habits and how to create new, improved ones

• • • Why certain foods affect your body and your mood

• • • How easy techniques like tapping and hypnosis can combat cravings and boost your energy

• • • How to distinguish between physical and emotional hunger

• • • Why finding ways to manage stress will naturally help you eat better—and stay slimmer!

You’ll see that small adjustments to your daily routine can add up to big changes in how you look and feel. You don’t need complicated meal plans, you don’t need to spend hours in the gym, and you definitely don’t need to be miserable. You just need a little help!

Boost your oxygen levels and boost your metabolism. Make one hand into a fist, place it at the bottom of your ribs. Place your other hand on top of your fist and gently pull in. Inhale deeply, against your hand, relax as you exhale. Repeat 10 times.

Eat better, forget about eating right. Making small positive changes will make you feel better. If you try and eat 'right' all the time you will make a 'mistake' and end up eating everything through a feeling of failure. You can succeed at eating better and feel good about yourself.

Think about where your calories are coming from. Are all calories the same? No! Sugar and carbohydrates leaves your stomach quickly - leaving you hungry. Protein leaves your stomach slowly, so you are fuller for longer (and you will therefore eat less food!)

Avoid diet foods that contain aspartame. Aspartame can deplete serotonin levels which can make you feel down. And if you feel down you are more likely to crave comfort foods.

When you are really physically hungry - eat. Choose something which is good for your mind and body. Then your metabolism will speed up and help you to lose weight.

When you feel better you eat better.

Sometimes it can feel as though you are not getting the results that you should be.

You might be exercising, eating healthily - but the weight seems stuck to you.

You might need to think about your washing machine - your liver!

When you are losing weight it's the livers job to get rid of those fat cells and toxins.

But if you liver is busy or tired it can't do this - so the fat sticks.

A busy liver - is dealing with alcohol.
Your liver has to prioritise what it deals with, when you drink alcohol your liver has to deal with that first - so you are not getting any slimmer.

A tired liver has had to deal with too many processed foods, sugar, caffeine, fizzy drinks etc.

Livers like food as close to their natural state as possible -

an apple - not apple pie!

So if you feel you need a boost to help you continue to lose weight, start thinking more about your liver - go on give it a break!

Check out my book for tips on how acupressure can support your liver and weight loss.

It doesn't have to be that way.

Science Bit!

It might be that while you have been on a diet that you have cut down on some of the foods you actually need to keep your brain happy.

Your brain has a happy chemical called serotonin - but it needs another chemical called tryptophan in order to manufacture serotonin.

You can eat foods that contain tryptophan and this will help you to feel happier - and so lose weight more easily - because when you feel better you are more likely to take better care of yourself and what you put into your body.

Top 10 Tryptophan Containing Foods:

pumpkin seeds

spinach

turkey

eggs

brown rice

fish

lentils

bananas

hummus

nuts

Kimberly

Easy Superfood Recipe - 2

Green Tea

Get tea bag, place in mug. Boil kettle, fill mug. Leave to stand for a bit, take out tea bag.

Enjoy!

OK, so this isn't much of a recipe but it still counts as superfood!

And a cup of green tea has no calories!
Just by changing from a daily latte to a cup of green tea you could lose up to 1/2 pound a week.

Why is green tea magic?

It is rich in antioxidants which can help prevent cancer.

It can help repair damage done to the liver by alcohol.

It has been found that women who drink green tea have a higher bone density.

It helps prevent heart disease.

Aids weight loss.

Oh dear, what has gone wrong. It would seem that as a family we have entered hormone hell. Just when you thought it was safe to talk to your children - it isn't.

Take the other day. Collected daughters (horrible weather) from school, and on the drive home I enquired about how the maths test had gone. (youngest had been worried and had done some work for it)

So far so good.

She said, 'ok, but I didn't finish the last page'

Now at this point I thought she might get worried about this, so I thought that it might be the case that most people hadn't finished and that would make her feel better.

So I said 'did anyone else not finish'

Big mistake.

She flipped into hormone girl and accused me of always comparing her to everyone else.

She stormed into the house. And really the atmosphere was set for the evening.

Later we finally had a talk about it and I was able to explain that I didn't mean it that way etc etc.

Now in years gone by I would have resorted to wine and chocolate for the evening. But these days my ways have changed! Instead I had a cup of green tea and went out to walk the dogs. Felt calmer then, and more able not to shout at her.

ahhhh parenting, always a learning experience.

Easy Tomato Sauce:

Finely chop one onion. Slowly cook in a large saucepan with a few glugs of olive oil.

You want the onion to be see-through, NOT brown (this will change the flavour).

Finely chop 2 cloves of garlic and add to the onions when they are almost done.

Now add two tins of chopped tomatoes, a heaped tablespoon of tomato concentrate (don'y worry if you haven't got this), half a teaspoon of dried oregano, pinch of salt and one vegetable stock cube.

Stir.

Put the lid on and leave to simmer at a low heat for 20 mins, stirring occasionally.

Extra: if you have a parmesan rind to hand chuck that in as it will add flavour - take out before you serve!

Put pasta water on after 5 mins, for health use brown pasta - if you mix it in the kids won't notice!

Extra: if you have basil around tear some up and stir in at the end.

When the pasta is done, sieve then mix it together.

Serve!

If there is any spare save it in the fridge, put cheese on and hey presto its pasta bake tomorrow!

Why are tomatoes magic?

They contain - lycopene

Lycopene - can help reduce risk of some cancers, repairs DNA and boosts brainpower!

(foodwise)

When is your weak time?

The time when you find yourself just having a snack, when you know you aren't hungry?

For me I discovered that my weak time was about 4pm, weekdays.

When I was trying to lose weight I would fetch my daughters home, one of them was having problems at school and would usually be in tears at the school gate. So by the time I got home I was stressed out and they were hungry and wanted snacks and I would find myself in the kitchen, stressed out, trying to sort the girls out - eating comfort food - trying to make myself feel better.

Amazingly it took me ages to realise what was going on, and I mean ages!

When I finally worked it out I changed what I did, I brought them a snack when I picked them up so that when we got home we didn't go straight into the kitchen - and we all calmed down and talked somewhere else in the house.

(and the daughters problems finally got sorted out!)

So I would love to know - when is your weak time, and what causes it?

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/ABitOfHelpWithLife/~3/_-PuvK1Fuig/what-is-your-worst-time-of-day-foodwise.html" title="What is your worst time of the day?

We always have a take away on a Friday night

We have a big breakfast on a Saturday

We always have crisps and nibbles and wine on a Saturday night

It's a Pub lunch on a Sunday, with all the trimmings

Are your food rules stopping you from losing weight?

You will have your own food rules - or habits, the things that you do automatically each and every week - and its these that might just be keeping that weight on.

You eat healthily all week, exercise, feel good and then the weekend comes along and everything goes out the window.

What can you do?

Step one - become aware of your own rules

Step two - decide which rules you would like to change

Step three - get an alternative, give your self a new plan, something else that you are going to do

The first time you make a change it will feel difficult, wrong even. But from then on it will get easier and easier until you have put into place a new healthy food rule that makes you feel good and helps you be that slimmer you.

It seems like months ago that you made those New Years resolutions.

If your resolution was to lose weight then you might already feel like you are failing, drifting back into your old ways.

Here are some easy tips that will boost your motivation, help you feel more positive and keep you moving towards that slimmer healthier you.

1. Boost your energy
It is hard to wake up and feel energised in the winter months. Doing this exercise each morning in the shower will boost your mental and physical energy.
-with your fingertips tap the area under the points of your collar bone for 30 sec
-now tap along the centre of your chest, the sternum, for 30 sec
-finally tap on the bottom of your rib cage, in line with your nipples for 30 sec

2. Remember you are only human
You will fail somedays. And that is ok, you are not perfect, only human.
So you had a chocolate bar, or ate a piece of cake. Its ok. You are making changes for life and that means allowing yourself to have chocolate or cake. Losing weight and keeping it off for the long term would seem pretty dreary if you said to yourself never again will I eat chocolate.

3. Small changes
Do you enjoy getting a coffee when out? Try choosing a skinny drink, or a tea, and leave the muffin. These small changes can add up to big weight loss changes over the month.

4. Daylight
In the winter months you can feel down due to lack of sunlight. Get outside at lunch, go for a short walk and you will find yourself feeling better. And when you feel better you are less likely to comfort eat.

5. Look after your brain
To keep yourself feeling positive you need to look after your brain, not starve it of the foods that make it feel good. Try eating more eggs, bananas, turkey, fish, almonds, oats. These contain tryptophan the chemical your body needs to make serotonin - the feel good chemical.

Kimberly

Great Advice!

I was talking to a friend of mine earlier today, she had just come back from skiing and is battered and bruised.

She said that when she feels down instead of turning to cakes (her preferred comfort food) she now paints her nails! Her treat is to go and buy a new mad colour of nail varnish and paint her nails.

So just now, I was looking at my house (magic fairies have failed to come and clean it while I was working), thinking about what to cook the children for tea, and I felt a bit down and grumpy.

So, my lovely sister had given me a pack of nail varnishes for Christmas - and I now have blue sparkly nails, and I feel a lot better!

Feeling down - go on paint your nails!

Kimberly

And its not just me, this Sheffield Blogger, Lauren is also at it!

They just don't get it

Just had a comment from someone on Twitter saying basically just eat less - and there; that's the diet book done.

Thanks

I get this all the time from people who have been slim all their lives. They laugh when I tell them I have written a diet help book. "Just tell them to eat less" - is what they say.

It's great that there are people who haven't got food issues - but there are many many people out there - me included - for whom the relationshop with food is very complicated.

Its hard for those people to understand how emotionally linked eating can be. How destructive body image can be on your confidence, on you life. How failing at yet another diet can make you feel like a failure.

You don't know how to break out of the food/diet/fail cycle - you feel trapped and alone.

Someone recently called me 'The feel good Guru' and I like it. That is what my aim is - to make people feel better, more confident, happier with their body and mind.

Life is short, I want people to be able to enjoy their lives, to run around with their children and grandchildren, to travel, to live a healthy life. Not to be stuck wearing clothes that hide your body, walking past clothes shops that you know you will never go into, never going swimming or on the beach.

So to all those people who laugh - I will just continue to ignore you. If I can help one person change how they feel about themselves and to become slimmer and healthier, then it is worth it.

Kimberly

Early Surprise!!

I popped into town earlier today with hubby and the kids - braving the sales - we went to Waterstones, as I am a book addict - and there on the table was my book!!

Its not even meant to be out so it was a complete surprise!

Its the blue book with the apple on the front.

Decided not to upload the pictures of my kids posing by it!

So if you feel that you need a diet helper for the New Year - the book is out!

Happy New Year!

Here are some of the tips to overcome food cravings that I talked about with Terri Trespicio on Martha Stewart Living Radio.

1. Unwanted food craving - rubbing the area between nose and lip, a soothing point. You can imagine the craving like a wave, as you rub this point you will feel the strength of the craving decrease.

Here are some easy tips that will help make your Christmas a great one. While I can't guarantee that you will lose weight over the holidays - I can help you maintain your current weight.

1. Alcohol, there is usually a lot of it about.

Halve your calories instantly by alternating an alcoholic drink with a non-alcoholic drink when out for the evening.

(This also make it easier to get up the next day!)

What is a glass of wine?

                                              It's pasta in a glass!

2. Eat slowly, taste your food. Enjoy every mouthful.

3. Eat when you are hungry. Stop eating when you are no longer hungry.

4. Take some time out. When you are stressed you are more likely to overeat, and lets face it the Christmas holidays can be stressful. A house full of relatives can push you to the limit!

Go and have a bubble bath, lock the bathroom door and claim half an hour for yourself. You will feel so much better afterwards.

Thanks to the lovely people at Little Brown who came to my weight loss workshop on a dark, cold and rainy December night!

To see the workshop in action and for some weight loss hints and tips click here.

Christmas isn't usually the time to start a weight loss plan, most people are saving that for the New Year - but the workshop covered ways that you can help yourself to live a slimmer life all year round.

There is always something coming up, Christmas, birthdays, anniversary's etc. Always some reason to put off your diet. But with the Little Book of Diet Help you can learn how small changes in the way you understand yourself and food - can give big results all year round.

One of my clients recently had a wonderful celebration weekend at a hotel known for its amazing food. She was able to enjoy her food, never felt that she was going without, and by listening to her body and thinking about what she was eating she was able to keep her weight steady. (This was amazing to her as before she would have expected to have gained weight).

Happy Holidays

I woke up this morning with two thoughts in my head.

First Thought
Is my sore throat better?

I have tonsillitis and being a therapist and not being able to speak - is not much use.

Also I am running a Weight Loss workshop in London this week - and my sign language isn't very good!

So I took a sip of water, and my antibiotics, and tried to talk.

Hurrah my voice is back.

Phew!

Second Thought
The Book.

On Tuesday, December 6th, my book 'The Little Book of Diet Help' is released in the US by Simon and Schuster.

It has been an amazing journey to get to this point.

I remember this time last year I had been 'working from home' - and a friend asked what I had been up to all day. I told them I had been working on my book.

And there it was, that look of pity/smile. They knew people who had been working on a book for years, of course, everyone does. I was just another one of those. Really it was an excuse for not doing housework when I was at home.

(Actually that is true, I hate housework and I will use any excuse!)

My first draft was terrible. Long, about me blah blah blah. Who would want to read that.

I need to get to the point. People don't have time to read.

I chucked it out and started thinking about the people I run the Hyp-Slim weight loss course for. I kept those people in my mind. Whenever I started to write rubbish I would re-focus and think about what they really wanted to know.

Then in March I sent 'The Little Book of Diet Help' out to agents and publishers. (Actually the printed out copies sat on my desk for a week while I worked up the courage to post it.)

I had been here before, so I wasn't expecting a reply.

The next day the Darley Anderson agency rang me wanting to represent me.

And here we are.

The book is coming out. I don't know how it will be received, all I know is that I get good feedback from the people I have worked with. People feel happier about themselves, and become slimmer and healthier.

And that can only be good.

Kimberly Willis

P.S. A big thank you to Sarah Cantin my editor at Simon and Schuster for her amazing help and hard work, and also to Sophie Gordon at the Darley Anderson agency, who picked up my book from the mornings post.

Lets face it its winter, its getting darker, the last thing you want to do in the morning is put on your gym kit and exercise. So why not put it off, do it later - go on the way home from work.

But you won't.

You might have a bad day, a stressful day, you deserve a bath, a glass of wine, you need a break, besides its cold and dark outside. So you go home.

And, if you have had a really good day you might want to rush home and celebrate. Or, if you do manage to get moving and do some exercise you will raise your metabolic rate and burn more calories - just in time for bed!

So when should you exercise -

In the Morning!

When you work out in the morning you ar more likely to exercise and less likely to talk yourself out of it. Your metabolism will be faster during the day - which means you will continue to burn more calories. And - you will feel better!

Go on - set that alarm clock!

"How many sessions will I need to lose this much weight?"

I often get asked this and you would think that as a professional therapist I would know.

But I don't.

This is because the mind is a complicated and amazing place and everyone mind is different - and everyone has had different life experiences.

And it is your life experiences that have got you to this point.

To the point where you need some help and are giving me a call.

But I don't know how long it will take to help you unravel your food issues. Sometimes we can work together and within a couple of sessions you will feel lighter, happier and know that things have changed for you. Or this may be the start of the road to the new you and you might need more support to help you on your way.

All I can say is that you are worth an investment - not necessarily in coming to see me - but in seeking whatever help it is that you need. This is your one shot at life and you are unique - you are worth it.

There is an article in the Guardian Newspaper discussing the epidemic that is diabetes.

The number of people suffering from type 2 diabetes is growing at such a huge rate that it's scary. Diabetes is expensive to treat and can lead to many complications.

In fact my Great Aunt, who did no exercise, was overweight and had a bad diet - developed type 2 diabetes. This lead to her having to have half of one leg amputated, which in turn lead to a blood clot which killed her.

Diabetes is serious.

The cause - bad diet and no exercise.

It seems so simple to solve this problem - and yet it isn't.

This is why I started my Hyp-Slim weight loss courses, and why I have written 'The Little Book of Diet Help' - I want to help people overcome emotional issues that are stopping them from losing weight and also to help them understand how they can make positive changes to their life - so that they don't have to die early like my Aunty Bobbie.
