T20 World Cup 2012: Meet the Selected Teams !

2012-09-19T21:24:00.000+05:30

12 teams, 1 trophy. Take a look at the profiles of the countries participating in the fourth T20 World Cup.

India: The Indian squad has eight members who were part of the T20 World Cup-winning side in 2007, with the focus clearly on the 6/6 man- Yuvraj Singh. While the batting sorts itself out, it is the bowling that will be tested, especially the pace department. Ravichandran Ashwin is the No.1 spinner in the side, and given India’s part-time options, it will be interesting to see where Harbhajan Singh and Piyush Chawla figure in Dhoni’s scheme of things.

Squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (skipper), Ravichandran Ashwin, Lakshmipathi Balaji, Piyush Chawla, Ashok Dinda, Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Virat Kohli, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, Yuvraj Singh.

West Indies: Balance and Power. Two words that come to mind when we look at the West Indian roster. On paper, a side that can win any fantasy league hands down. Having said so, it is their performance as a unit that will determine the distance they traverse in the tournament.

Squad: Darren Sammy (skipper), Dwayne Bravo, Samuel Badree, Darren Bravo, Johnson Charles, Fidel Edwards, Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Lendl Simmons, Dwayne Smith.

Australia: Should we trust age or ability? While the Australian playing XI flashes in your eyes, you may not be surprised to learn that a majority of the players are touching 30, or on the wrong side of it. George Bailey is a skipper who is easily the most inexperienced name in the side, if not the tournament. Could that be a good thing?

Squad:George Bailey (skipper), Daniel Christian, Pat Cummins, Xavier Doherty, Ben Hilfenhaus, Brad Hogg, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Glenn Maxwell, Clint McKay, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Shane Watson, Cameron White.

England:Barring Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann, this English side has names that have been in and out of the squad. Kevin Pietersen- their highest run-getter from their 2010 World Cup-winning campaign is missing, a fact hard to ignore. That the three lions will score is a certainty, but will the defending champions roar?

Squad: Stuart Broad (skipper), Jonny Bairstow, Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan, Danny Briggs, Jos Buttler, Jade Dernbach, Steven Finn, Alex Hales, Craig Kieswetter, Michael Lumb, Eoin Morgan, Samit Patel, Graeme Swann, Luke Wright.

Pakistan :Another balanced side in the competition, with as many as five all-rounders ready to take their place in their side, with excellent cricketing CVs in their kit bags. It is upto Pakistan to pick the combination that clicks, for with a new skipper in charge, there is no other choice but to step on the gas.

South Africa: The problem with calling South Africa the favourites, is their reputation for tripping on self-made obstacles. With a side packed with pretty much the best T20 players in the world, the only opponents they need to fear is themselves. Will they manage to break the trend in Sri Lanka?

Squad: AB de Villiers (skipper), Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Johan Botha, Jean-Paul Duminy, Faf du Plessis, Jacques Kallis, Richard Levi, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Justin Ontong, Wayne Parnell, Robin Pietersen, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Sri Lanka:According to spearhead Lasith Malinga, Sri Lanka are favourites for the simple reason that they have been playing the Sri Lankan Premier League. That should be a first, given that no nation that has hosted the tournament has won it. In a team with so many match winners, it should be possible, provided they let the bat and the ball do the talking.

Squad: Mahela Jayawardene (skipper), Dinesh Chandimal, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Akila Dananjaya, Shaminda Eranga, Rangana Herath, Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Ajantha Mendis, Jeewan Mendis, Dilshan Munaweera, Thisara Perera, Kumar Sangakkara, Lahiru Thirimanne.

New Zealand: The Black Caps have a reputation for being cricket’s dark horses, for as long as they have been playing cricket. While the batting looks world class, the bowling is at best first class barring Vettori, but it is the temperament and their will to win that needs work. Not that they don’t know how to win a cricket match.

Squad: Ross Taylor (skipper), Doug Bracewell, James Franklin, Martin Guptill, Ronnie Hira, Brendon McCullum, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Adam Milne, Rob Nicol, Jacob Oram, Tim Southee, Daniel Vettori, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson.

Bangladesh: At best a surprise. While Bangladesh might be upset with this description of their prospects at the T20 World Cup, they will have to play out of their skins to be more than just an underdog menace. With most of their success revolving around their lynchpin-Shakib-Al-Hasan, it’s probably time for the remaining ten to step up and contribute.

Ireland: The Irish have been international cricket’s comets, with victories against Pakistan and England in ODI cricket the only shining light in what is pretty much a big heap of losses. About the squad, in Kevin O’Brien they have a hard-hitting batsman who has scored the fastest ODI World Cup century. George Dockrell once dismissed Sachin Tendulkar with his left-arm spin, while Trent Johnston’s funky chicken goes viral, whenever he bags a wicket. They need to do more, to be more than just trivia.

Squad: William Porterfield (skipper), Alex Cusack, George Dockrell, Trent Johnston, Nigel Jones, Ed Joyce, Tim Murtagh, Kevin O'Brien, Niall O'Brien, Boyd Rankin, Max Sorensen, Paul Stirling, Stuart Thompson, Andrew White, Gary Wilson.

Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe had beaten Australia at the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, with present skipper Brendan Taylor playing a Man-of-the-Match winning knock in that fixture. They have been grouped alongside Sri Lanka and South Africa in the competition, and can raise eyebrows only if they manage to lift their performance as a team.

Squad: Brendan Taylor (skipper), Elton Chigumbura, Graeme Cremer, Craig Ervine, Kyle Jarvis, Hamilton Masakadza, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Chris Mpofu, Forster Mutizwa, Richard Muzhange, Ray Price, Vusi Sibanda, Prosper Utseya, Brian Vitori, Malcolm Waller.

Afghanistan: International cricket’s journeymen first warmed hearts by just putting together a cricket team, and qualifying for their second T20 World Cup is an achievement by itself. In a side made up of stocky men who picked up the game as refugees in Pakistan, skipper Nawroz Mangal’s name stands out. Their stock can rise, if they manage a win. Wishful thinking for they are in a group that also has India and England.

Squad: Nawroz Mangal (skipper), Dawlat Zadran, Gulbadin Naib, Hamid Hassan, Izzatullah Dawlatzai, Karim Sadeq, Mohammad Jawed Ahmadi, Mohd Nasim Baras, Mohammad Nabi, Mohammad Shahzad, Mohammad Asghar Stanikzai, Najibullah Zadran, Samiullah Shinwari, Shafiqullah Shafaq, Shapur Zadran.

Top 10 Startups Changing the World And What We Can Learn From Them

2012-09-14T06:54:00.003+05:30

For lots of startup founders, a big money valuation is just half the goal. Many startups are motivated by a singular drive to change the way we view and interact with the world around us. And while every startup can teach us something, the most disruptive often have the most profound lessons. Here are 10 of today’s most visionary startups to admire, and more importantly, model:

1) Instagram
Instagram is a popular photo sharing app that uses filters to enhance photos. After being released on the Android market, it set download records and built a community of over 50 million loyal users. With no marketing budget, Instagram relied entirely on an almost fanatical community of fans to spread the word, and sold to Facebook for almost $1 billion. Lesson: Build a community, nurture it, and the users will market you.

2) 2tor
Founded in 2008 by heavyweight education entrepreneurs, 2tor partners with top U. S. universities –including Georgetown, UNC, USC and most recently Washington University in St. Louis – bring their degree programs online. Its mission is to transform higher education by bringing it online without sacrificing quality, student experience or graduation and job placement rates. With $96 million raised in venture capital and clear success cases to date, 2tor has emerged as the market leader in the rapidly evolving School-as-a-Service sector. Lesson learned? Industry reform is always possible – it just takes some creative thinking.

3) Global Giving
Global Giving has transformed the way people invest in the developing world. Through developing a network of donors who fund grassroots projects the world over, Global Giving has raised over $65 million dollars and funded over 5K projects. Lesson: Giving back can create a vibrant social community.

4) Pinterest
Pinterest – a virtual pinboard that allows users to quickly and easily share images – has quickly grown into the third largest social network. With a growing community that shares thousands of visual collections, Pinterest has re-invented the social network. Pinterest teaches an important lesson: keep your site simple and easy-to-use and users will flock.

5) Airbnb
Airbnb, a website that lets people with extra space rent it out to travelers, took the hotel industry and turned it upside-down. The company grew to a $1 billion valuation in 2011, despite a huge PR scandal involving a burglarized home and less-than-stellar customer service. Airbnb responded quickly, improved customer service, instituted protections for hosts, and is now more popular than ever. Lesson: a PR disaster is only a disaster if you let it become one.

6) Square
Square has grown into a billion plus dollar company by providing mobile merchants a method to accept credit card payments. The company relies on growing its user base by giving the device and the app away for free, and generates revenue with a small percentage on transactions. Square teaches us that sometimes giving away your product for free can be the ticket to generating strong revenues.

7) Zappos.com
The world’s most popular shoe e-tailer began with a simple premise: focus on your customers and the rest will fall into place. Zappos has stayed true to that principle and in the process, redefined the definition of customer service. Its customer-centric policies have paid off – the company was acquired in 2009 for $1.2 billion. Zappos.com teaches us an important lesson: be great to your customers, and they’ll be great to you.

8) BetterWorks
Despite high unemployment, many firms are finding it difficult to attract and retain top talent. Enter BetterWorks, a workplace recognition and rewards platform that lets businesses engage their staff through innovative rewards through local partners. And it works, boosting engagement and productivity significantly. The takeaway: treat your employees well. They ARE your business.

9) Docstoc
Created by Jason Nazar and Alon Schwartz, Docstoc brought social to the dry world of professional documents. Though it began as a document hosting and sharing site, it evolved first by allowing users to sell uploaded documents, then by encouraging business professionals to participate, and finally by hiring a team of lawyers and business writers to create original content. Lesson: revenue models shouldn’t be static; they should grow along with the company.

10) Better Place
Better Place is a forward-thinking startup that builds transportation infrastructure for electronic vehicles. By investing in the infrastructure of tomorrow, Better Place is paving the way for greener and more efficient automobile technology. Better Place teaches us that targeting future markets and developing products for them can be a viable business model.

Micromax Ninja Verses Samsung Galaxy Y: Is It Really Faster And Better?

2012-09-14T06:40:00.001+05:30

Micromax has strong hold mobile phone market especially in delivering budget smartphones in India. They have tried to imitate launch phone with features offered by biggies at affordable prices. Their new product is Micromax Ninja 3.5 and 4 which tries to show down the popular Samsung Galaxy Y. Samsung Galaxy Y is dominating smartphone in a budget of 7-8,000 rupees with all the desired features. While Micromax launched its Ninja 3.5 and Ninja 4 series phones in market to deliver better below the price of Galaxy Y. So, Micromax indirectly attacked on obvious competitor Samsung Galaxy Y through their Video commercial.

If you remember Samsung Galaxy Y advertisement where a girl hanging out with friends helps out a person in telling direction using Google maps and says “Aapke paas nahi hai UNCLE“.
Micromax Ninja commercial begins where Samsung ends. When she comes back after helping out a person, her friends make fun of her mobile phone “Aapke paas nahi hai AUNTY“.
Also on their Facebook cover page, it reads “Two phones that make you ask Why Y?” and “Who needs small Y?“. Now, you can clearly guess what Y stands for icon smile Micromax Ninja Makes Fun of Galaxy Y: Is It Really Faster And Better?

	Galaxy Y Duos	Ninja 3.5	Ninja 4
Screen size	3.14 inches	8.9 cms ~ 3.5 inches	10.1 cms ~ 4 inches
Processor	830 MHz ARMv6	1 GHz	1 GHz
Android Version	Gingerbread 2.3.5	Gingerbread 2.3.5	Gingerbread 2.3.5
RAM	160MB	256MB	256MB
Price	8,000 Rupees approx.	4,999 Rupees	5,999 Rupees

I considered Galaxy Duos in above comparison because Ninja series is Dual SIM.

Is Micromax Ninja Faster And Better Than Samsung Galaxy Y?

Not just going by what they have advertised on Television but Specs clearly says Micromax Ninja phones are better than Galaxy Y. More Processing power obviously will make work smooth and bigger display compliments the efficiency.

Considering the price difference, one should obviously go for Ninja instead of Galaxy Y.

WAIT! One important thing in Android phones is optimization of firmware to balance processes and running services. This plays an important role while balancing or multi-tasking. I am not really sure about how Micromax has developed its firmware to manage hardware resources. If that goes wrong, every improvement on Hardware side will be pretty useless.

I would like to know your views if you have any of the above phones. Do comment what you think about this Galaxy Y vs Micromax Ninja battle?

Turn Your Android Device into Windows 8 Tablet

2012-09-11T06:15:00.001+05:30

Windows 8 For Android is a Launcher app which tried to imitate and offer Windows 8 styled theming on Android. Homescreen of your phone will be turned into tiles. These Tiles can be used as a single app or even a folder containing multiple apps. Unlike Windows 8, it has a Start button which opens up the app drawer. Most commonly used tiles are already on the Homescreen. Like Mail ,Messaging, Maps, etc. however, you have to decide which app to allocate for those tiles. I mean which app should open when we click on those tiles.

There are many vacant tile spaces which could be filled just by tapping and selecting the app.You may miss notification bar but that’s how Windows works.Anyhow, Windows 8 For Android could turn your Android device into Windows 8 Tablet.

App is recently introduced in Android Play store and it still has room for improvements.Scope of Improvement

    * Try to use Windows 8 Default Font.
    * Live Tiles effect would be awesome.
    * It would be better if you let the user choose app for Weather too.
    * Notification button on App drawer doesn’t work. Instead it appears when settings is accessed.

Windows 8 For Android is available for download at a minimal price of $1.99 in Play Store.

Download uTorrent For Android

2012-09-09T08:05:00.002+05:30

uTorrent is finally available officially in Android Play Store as an app to download torrent. Initially, it was possible to remote control utorrent downloads on computer from Android but now uTorrent for Android can download torrents on Phones and Tablets.

What uTorrent for Android Does

You can search for torrent using the search feature inside the app which takes you to Google Search in Browser tab. So, it is recommended to search for torrent yourself on site of your choice. Just when you click on Magnet Link, it is automatically captured by uTorrent. And if it is .torrent then open it manually using uTorrent.

You can set Download Location but cannot select file to be downloaded in the torrent. You can add torrent by URL as well as downloaded file but I was unable to delete torrent from app. Though I deleted the incomplete download file from File manager, it was still there. You can Seed after downloading and also set download and upload speed limit.
It has an ability to run in background to continue downloading or seeding while you carry out other operations.

It is tagged as beta and that’s obvious. I wish to see following improvements in uTorrent for Andorid:

* Allow grabbing of .torrent files like Magnet Links. But that looks impossible because, file has to be downloaded first before processing so app should at least allow to predefine folder which will be scanned to find .torrent
* uTorrent Android Widget with Play/Pause Download Control would be appreciated.

Bottomline

uTorrent for Android was the most awaited app and when it has arrived, it has fulfilled all basic expectation. It would be great to see it doing progress and add many new sophisticated features and improvements.

Now Bigger Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Arrives in Galaxy S3 Avatar

2012-09-02T07:31:00.001+05:30

After several months of vivid rumors and speculations regarding the Galaxy Note sequel, the over-sized beast has finally been announced properly. During the IFA annual convention at Berlin, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note II technical specifications and its attracting features. Although the Korean assembly was eager to detail and present the device in any aspect possible, it failed to mention any word regarding the release date, general availability or even an approximate price.

As we’ve previously hinted, the Galaxy Note 2 is nothing more than an oversized Galaxy S3, attached to the traditional Samsung stylus: the S Pen. The second generation Note smartphone is now thinner, lighter and comes with a bundle of catchy software features slashed on top of the newest Android platform. The processor has been revamped and for those who thought that the Galaxy Note was a bit too large for a phone, wait to see its sequel.
Samsung Galaxy Note 2: Features and Specs
Truly a symbiosis between a regular smartphone and a full-fledged tablet, the Galaxy Note 2 comes with a staggering 5.5-inch wide Super AMOLED display capable of 1280 by 720 pixel resolutions, a mark which is something to be proud of for that size. Compared with the old model, the Galaxy Note II is a bit wider (.2 inches actually) but keeps its pretty design in a 9.4mm thick body, while housing a larger 3.100 mAh battery which should supply enough battery juice, as well as a faster recharging time.

The new Note comes with a quad-core Exynos processor clocked at 1.6GHz and Samsung announced the device to launch with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board. As usual, Samsung slashed their traditional 8-megapixel camera on the back of the device. The S Pen stylus included in the package will allow users to perform certain actions with more ease, while the software bundle will help boost up productivity. Here’s what tricks the beast knows:

Quick Commands – the S Pen can be customized to include a limited number of quick commands using simple gestures, such as waving the pen back and forward two times to open a certain application
Air View – quickly previews galleries and folders by simply floating the stylus above the panel
Easy Clip – enhanced cropping and sharing technologies which can be used even outside the phone’s screen
S Planner – the native Samsung calendar app now supports the S Pen, also integrated in Mail
Don’t go too far – well, this is not the official name of this features, but it seems that the S Pen will trigger an alarm if the phone itself is forgotten on a distant shelf
The Galaxy Note 2 will launched in the fourth quarter of this year, probably just in time for the Holidays madness, but Samsung failed to mention any specific details regarding its price and carrier availability.

Samsung: plenty to choose from
When the first Note arrived, many interpreted the phone as a hideous creation which would not feat the tastes of regular purchasers. But as Samsung foreseen, a specific segment of the market was targeted, and targeted with success, the phone selling more than 10 million copies until the moment.

Just like the first Note copied the design of the Galaxy S2, its sequel wears the same cloths of the Galaxy S3. The model comes with the same rounded edges, a glossy finish and the main differences can be seen in size, software and of course, hardware. Although the last part was purely to accommodate the first two, it seems that Samsung realized that the phone’s size truly matters. That and of course, marketing.

Galaxy Note 2: the story of the phablet goes on
The original success of the Galaxy Note shows that there is a huge potential for phone – tablet hybrids, and a good marketing campaign paired with an attracting product will surely spark interest. Leaving the extra software touch aside, the Galaxy Note 2 is simply an oversized S3 which will probably be marketed as the perfect solutions for those who wish to do a bit of work when traveling, while enjoying a device usable in everyday life. Pair that with an attractive price and you’ve got yourself a bargain.

Moreover, the Galaxy Note 2 is a device which sparks interest to those that are not even interested in such a phone. It’s a curiosity of the tech nature, which will surely bring people inside showrooms, where Samsung stylishly displays its large wide of products, made for each taste and built with every size: the Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Tab Student, Series 5 and 7 and plenty others.

Make Real-Money Using Facebook Gambling app Bingo & Slots Friendzy, Available For UK's User

2012-08-24T21:23:00.003+05:30

The current trend for big-money bingo has hit Facebook in the form of a real-cash gambling app called Bingo & Slots Friendzy.
The app, the name of which sets the expectation bar fairly low, is Facebook's first app that allows gambling with real money and is available only to UK users of the social network. In line with UK law, you'll have to be 18 to chance your arm at some real cash prizes, with stringent "account acceptance controls verifying their identity" in place to stop younger players.Given that gambling is an addictive pastime, all users will also "have access to a number of self-help tools to limit their spending and exclude themselves from playing at any time".

Quite a gamble

The UK is the first country to get a social gambling app because of its "mature and very well-regulated gambling market" – non UK users won't see any stories generated by the gambling app in their news feeds, nor will they be able to access the applications from the Facebook App Center.
Outside the UK, Facebookers will have to make do with chancing pretend money on apps likeZynga Bingo and Zynga Poker. The app has been created by Gamesys, the company behind Jackpot Joy and those irritating Barbara Windsor adverts. Jackpotjoy MD Michael Saunders said, "We've reinvented our exclusive Bingo and Slots games to appeal to the UK Facebook community. This marks an exciting turning point for the industry and a milestone for the Gamesys business."

Cash in

Meanwhile, a Facebook spokesperson made the point that the app is not a joint venture and has been developed entireley by Gamesys. They justified the move in a statement to us: "Real money gaming is a popular and well-regulated activity in the UK and we are allowing a partner to offer their games to adult users on the Facebook platform in a safe and controlled manner."Of course, there'll be a lot of money in it for Facebook if the bingo game takes off – there hasn't been any discussion of figures in the press materials, but given that Facebook was making 12 per cent of its income from Zynga back in February 2012 by taking a 30 per cent cut of Zynga's in-game purchases, you can bet that Facebook's taking no small cut. And you know what they say: the house always wins.
