This week’s WoW feature is:

Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass #2)<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-7613" alt="Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass #2) by Sarah J.
Publisher: Bloomsbury Children’s
Expected publication: August 27, 2013

An assassin?s loyalties are always in doubt.
But her heart never wavers.

After a year of hard labor in the Salt Mines of Endovier, eighteen-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien has won the king’s contest to become the new royal assassin. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown ? a secret she hides from even her most intimate confidantes.

Keeping up the deadly charade?while pretending to do the king’s bidding?will test her in frightening new ways, especially when she’s given a task that could jeopardize everything she’s come to care for. And there are far more dangerous forces gathering on the horizon — forces that threaten to destroy her entire world, and will surely force Celaena to make a choice.

Where do the assassin?s loyalties lie, and who is she most willing to fight for? (Goodreads)

I loved Throne of Glass, and the <a title="Review: The Assassin and the Pirate Lord (Throne of Glass #0.1) by Sarah J.
Angie Chapman was thirteen years old when she ventured into the woods alone on a Girl Scouts camping trip. Now she’s returned home?only to find that it’s three years later and she’s sixteen-or at least that’s what everyone tells her.

What happened to the past three years of her life?

Angie doesn’t know.

But there are people who do ? people who could tell Angie every detail of her forgotten time, if only they weren’t locked inside her mind. With a tremendous amount of courage, Angie embarks on a journey to discover the fragments of her personality, otherwise known as her “alters.” As she unearths more and more about her past, she discovers a terrifying secret and must decide: When you remember things you wish you could forget, do you destroy the parts of yourself that are responsible?

Liz Coley’s alarming and fascinating psychological mystery is a disturbing – and ultimately empowering page-turner about accepting our whole selves, and the healing power of courage, hope, and love.

Preserving Memories and Losing Time

by Liz Coley

I am one of those people who clings to stories and mementos, who documents my life if only for myself. Like Angie, in the middle school grades I kept a journal of sorts, not in a locked diary format, but in calendar squares. Tucked away somewhere, I have a kitten calendar from fifth grade and a collection of the Kliban wall calendars that came out every year, with cartoons of dumpy, awkward cats on top and 365 squares filled with tiny scrawl below. Like Angie?s mom, I created scrapbooks before the scrapbooking industry turned into the popular art form it is today. I pasted up collages of photos, comics, ticket stubs, programs, and other flat ephemera from middle school, high school, and college. Later on, I created elaborate baby books for my three kids, documenting their early vocabulary, their teeth coming in and falling out, their developmental milestones up to age two, their birthdays thereafter. When the family took trips, I created detailed scrapbooks for each adventure with all the photos, maps, napkins, subway tokens, postcards, hotel chocolate wrappers, admission tickets, etc. until digital photography made the task too unwieldy and the lack of interest on anyone else?s part made it too thankless. I tell the same stories again and again, repeating my mom?s recollections of her childhood, my own, and my kids? so they won?t be lost. I?ve kept all handwritten letters, the Christmas cards we receive, and the emails in both directions since Yahoo was invented. Before that, I printed them out and put them in folders. I still have my baby blanket, my first pillow, and the little red wool coat I wore when I was four. I treat Memory like a cherished friend, and aid it in all these ways.

There?s a hole in my memory. I?m still trying to figure out where it came from?I guess from the anxious days of 9-11 and the anthrax scare days thereafter. It was a weird period in my life when I often found it hard to breathe, even though nothing bad was happening in my little corner of the world. I gave up reading the comics every morning. I forgot to do things. Somehow I missed over a year of dental appointments, something I?d done faithfully every six months for myself and the kids. I skipped my annual checkup. I forgot to enter an entire year of birthdays in the kids? baby books, something I later discovered when it was too late to recapture the ?state of the child? report. It?s as if I didn?t really process the passage of time and just moved mechanically from day to day in a seasonless, uncalendared period. And I think it must have been during that phase that we learned a particular piece of music in church choir?for the first time.

Some years after, when I was back to what passes for normal, my choir director passed around a ?new? piece of music. It was entirely unfamiliar to me. Those of you who sing know that when you?ve spent time mastering a piece for performance, even if a few details like the words slip your mind, the brain stores the melody and the tricky timing you?ve rehearsed. You simply don?t forget music. Music clings deeply in memory and can be accessed even for people who have suffered strokes and lost the ability to speak. Our director?s husband made a comment about having done the piece before, and I figured he meant before they came to our church. Even singing the first few pages brought no sense of familiarity with the words or the melody. Then other people began commenting that they remembered doing it as well. And as I kept sight reading, I thought, ?Well, I must have been on vacation or out of town when they did this.? It was as new to me as if I?d never seen it. But obviously I had. Because there on the third page, were notations and symbols unmistakably in my handwriting. I had definitely worked this piece before, and it had left no mark whatsoever in my memory. If you don?t sing, it?s hard to explain how spooky that was?because it was impossible.

When Angie sees irrefutable physical evidence that she has been present for things she can?t begin to recall?scarring, aging, growing, wearing strange clothes?she?s filled with deep, anguished dismay. When she?s told she?s lived somewhere else for three years, a thousand lost days, it?s inconceivable. ?How could I not remember all this?!? she wails. I found that confused and frightened wail inside myself on page three of my music, where I told myself to take a breath, sustain the phrase, and look up for the cut-off. How could I not remember all this?

Excerpt for Silent Orchids: The Age of Alandria~Book One

?It?s all right, don?t think about it anymore tonight. If it?s important it will come back to you when you need it to,? Finn said with a sigh, trying to comfort her as he rested his hands on top of hers to try to stop her shaking. She noticed an odd expression flash across his face, but it was gone before she could define it. Strange.

Kaeleigh nodded at Finn and took a deep breath, trying to relax, wishing his hands had the same calming effect as the imaginary guy that was in her flashes. Yeah, because that?s not crazy. She looked up at Finn to find that he was still looking at her with a concerned, yet softer look on his face until her eyes met his, and then she realized that his hand was still on top of hers. Kaeleigh suddenly felt awkward at their close proximity on the bed?her bed. She pulled her hands out from under his to pull the hair out of her face and tuck it behind her ears, hoping for a smooth transition, trying not to make him feel bad; after all, he had come to check on her. Finn suddenly got up from the bed and walked out the door without another word.

Crap! I made him feel bad. I can?t believe he would leave without saying goodbye. What?s his deal? Twice now a guy has just walked away from me. Kaeleigh made to move from the bed, not remembering what she went to bed wearing (or not wearing). She looked under the covers to make sure that she was decent in her tank top and pajama pants. Good thing I left the bottoms on before I fell asleep this time, that could have been awkward.

?Finn, where did you go?? she shouted as she walked toward her bedroom door. ?Are you leaving?… Oh, thanks,? she said a bit shyly after she practically bumped into Finn as he walked back into the room, handing her a glass of water he got from the kitchen. She took several drinks, hoping to wash down whatever awkwardness that was suddenly between them. Finn was one of her best friends; she wasn?t sure why suddenly things felt a bit different. She decided not to let it be weird any longer as she rolled her shoulders to shake it off.

Finn grabbed one of Kaeleigh?s several ?unnecessary pillows? as he thought of them and grabbed an extra blanket out of the closet. She called them ?decorative throw pillows,? but he didn?t get the point of them.

?What are you doing, Finn??

?Go to bed, Kae, I?ll sleep on the couch to keep you company in case you have another bad dream or need anything,? Finn said and headed back to the couch.

Kaeleigh got into her bed, feeling slightly guilty that one of her best friends, who had been so great to her tonight when she needed a friend, was going to sleep on her springy and not-so-comfortable-for-sleeping couch. After all, things seemed back to normal and Finn had spent the night before and it was no big deal, although Chel was usually there too. He?ll be fine out there on the couch. The couch squeaked as Finn plopped himself down and made himself comfortable, or at least tried. Every time he turned over or adjusted his position on the couch, it squeaked. Ughh! I?ll never get any sleep with all that racket out there.

?Finn, you don?t have to stay out there.? Kaeleigh?s shout sounded muffled from under her comforter.

?I?m fine, I?m not leaving you tonight. You?re still a bit shaken up, I?ll stay the night… or what?s left of it,? Finn replied in a tired voice.

?No, I mean you don?t have to sleep out there on the couch, there?s plenty of room in here,? Kaeleigh said, looking at her king-sized bed.

?Oh… well, your bed is more comfortable, but only if you?re sure. Don?t tell Chel we had a slumber party without her, she?ll never forgive us for that,? he said with a playful grin as he walked in her room.

?Tell me about it! She hates to feel like she?s missed anything. The other day when we had lunch without her she went on and on about it that whole day. It?s our secret,? she said, scooting over to the far side of the bed to give Finn space. Her room wasn?t that big but she and Chel had decided to share so they made the king bed fit. It always made them laugh when they reminisced about their acrobatic maneuvers trying to get it in the door and turned properly in the room. Smiling, she thought, See, totally normal, no big deal. Then she heard his belt buckle as he was taking it off and she quickly flipped over so she was looking at the opposite wall, blushing like a little girl at the thought of a boy in her room taking his clothes off. Her heart sped up. Why am I freaking out? Realizing Finn was laughing, she rolled slightly back toward him.

?What?s so funny??

?You.? He looked in her eyes and took in her face with a humorous twinkle in his eyes, but also something else?something resembling desire, she thought with a panicky feeling?but then it melted away. ?Don?t worry, I?m just taking off my belt. It?s uncomfortable, but everything else is staying on… unless you want it to come off, Kaeleigh,? saying that last part with a mockingly seductive voice that she knew he was teasing her with. At least she thought he was teasing.

?Shut up and go to sleep,? she said as she threw a pillow at him and rolled back over. She knew he?d be the perfect gentleman. ?Good night, Finn, thanks for being here.?

?That?s what friends are for, right? Maybe my being here will keep the bad guy in your dreams away. Good night, Kae.?

Morgan Wylie has been writing on and off throughout her growing up years, but started seriously working on her first novel in the Spring of 2009. 7 months pregnant with her first child, she didn’t start off with a lot of focused writing time. But Morgan had an epiphany, if you will, and the story flashed before her so she began to write. And she?s still writing. Her debut Young Adult fantasy, SILENT ORCHIDS, will be out this summer.

She?s been six different people in six different places: Madeline in Ohio, Isabelle in Missouri, Olivia in Kentucky . . . But now that she?s been transplanted to rural Louisiana, she has decided that this fake identity will be her last.

Witness Protection has taken nearly everything from her. But for now, they?ve given her a new name, Megan Rose Jones, and a horrible hair color. For the past eight months, Meg has begged her father to answer one question: What on earth did he do ? or see ? that landed them in this god-awful mess? Meg has just about had it with all the Suits? rules ? and her dad?s silence. If he won?t help, it?s time she got some answers for herself.

But Meg isn?t counting on Ethan Landry, an adorable Louisiana farm boy who?s too smart for his own good. He knows Meg is hiding something big. And it just might get both of them killed. As they embark on a perilous journey to free her family once and for all, Meg discovers that there?s only one rule that really matters ? survival. (Goodreads)

I wanted to read The Rules for Disappearing from the moment I read the synopsis. I was thrilled to finally read it, and it did not disappoint. I was immediately sucked into this novel, and read it within a day!

The Rules for Disappearing is such an original, fascinating, and suspenseful story. I?d never even heard of a YA novel that had to do with the Witness Protection Program before this one, and I loved getting Anna?s perspective of the program. Her family is exhausted from running, moving from town to town, and having to change their names and appearance with each move. I found it interesting to see how each of them dealt with their situation in their own way.

The characters are well developed, and the story has great pacing. Though I had my suspicions early on, I was completely drawn into this story, and enjoyed watching it unfold. I loved Ethan, Meg?s love interest, and the two of them together? But even more so, I loved the relationship between Meg and her little sister Mary.

I had so much fun reading The Rules for Disappearing! It was a satisfying read from the mystery and suspense, to the romance. The ending was creepy and left somewhat open, so I can?t help but wonder if there will be a sequel. If so, I will be reading it! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys suspense/thrillers.

This week’s WoW feature is:

Wild Cards
by Simone Elkeles

Publisher: Walker Books
Expected publication: October 1, 2013

After getting kicked out of boarding school, bad boy Derek Fitzpatrick has no choice but to live with his ditzy stepmother while his military dad is deployed. Things quickly go from bad to worse when he finds out she plans to move them back to her childhood home in Illinois. Derek?s counting the days before he can be on his own, and the last thing he needs is to get involved with someone else?s family drama.

Ashtyn Parker knows one thing for certain–people you care about leave without a backward glance. A football scholarship would finally give her the chance to leave. So she pours everything into winning a state championship, until her boyfriend and star quarterback betrays them all by joining their rival team. Ashtyn needs a new game plan, but it requires trusting Derek?someone she barely knows, someone born to break the rules. Is she willing to put her heart on the line to try and win it all? (Goodreads)

This book sounds awesome, and duh, it’s by Simone Elkeles! And one of the MCs is a girl football player, trying to get a scholarship? Yes, please!

What book are you anxiously waiting for this week?

I’m thrilled to be taking part in Katie McGarry‘s blog tour for DARE YOU TO, a companion novel to PUSHING THE LIMITS (which I loved)! Check out the books and the quote below, then be sure to enter the TWO giveaways below.

An emotionally-charged roller coaster ride that will keep you turning the pages well into the night, DARE YOU TO tells the story of seventeen-year-old Beth Risk, who finds her life turned upside down at the beginning of her senior year. Forced to leave the mother she?s always protected and the only friends she?s ever known, Beth must start over at a new school, in a new town, with an uncle she hasn?t seen in years.

The last thing she wants is to catch the eye of the town?s golden boy, popular jock Ryan Stone, who seems determined to win her over for all the wrong reasons. But when she discovers that Ryan has secrets of his own, Beth is drawn to him despite herself. Soon she?ll have to make a choice?between the past that beckons her back, and the life she never dreamed possible.

With PUSHING THE LIMITS, Harlequin TEEN introduced a singular new voice that continues to resonate with teens and adults alike. With DARE YOU TO, Katie McGarry cements her place as a master of contemporary young adult fiction.

About the author:

Katie was a teenager during the age of grunge and boy bands and remembers those years as the best and worst of her life. She is a lover of music, happy endings, reality television, and is a secret University of Kentucky basketball fan.

Katie is the author of the full-length Young Adult novels PUSHING THE LIMITS and DARE YOU TO, and the e-novella CROSSING THE LINE. Her debut novel, PUSHING THE LIMITS, is a 2012 Goodreads Choice Finalist for YA Fiction and an RT Book Reviews 2012 Reviewer?s Choice Awards Nominee for Young Adult Contemporary Novel.

Writing has given Katie an excuse to pursue her passions. Research for her books has provided her with the amazing opportunity to train with baseball players, ride along in a drag car at ninety-six miles per hour and experience boxing and mixed martial arts. The most memorable moments for Katie are when she speaks to groups of teenagers about her research, writing and the truth that no dream is out of reach. Katie would love to hear from her readers.

I’ll be updating this post with my progress each day.

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 13th and runs through Sunday, May 19th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 7.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

I’ve been looking forward to Bout of Books, and now it’s here! Of course, when I signed up this week seemed ideal for reading, I was going to read ALL the books. Ha! Now, we’re stripping and staining our back deck this week, I’m painting my home office, and prepping for company to arrive this weekend. And there’s work of course. *sigh* Oh well, I’m still going to give this Read-A-Thon my best shot. I’m just having to adjust my goals and re-think what I’ll be reading. Mainly, that I’ll have to rely on listening to audiobooks this week. To me, audiobooks totally count, so this works for me.

I really hate listing books I hope to read, because as soon as I do I want to read/listen to something else. But here I go anyway, I can’t guarantee I’ll stick with this list…. I’ve listed WAY MORE than I could possibly read, but below is my list to choose from (I’m a mood reader).

Today, Stacey Marie Brown, author Darkness of Light is stopping by for an interview as part of her blog tour! Check out her Q & A below, and be sure to enter the giveaway!

DARKNESS OF LIGHT is a Mature YA/New Adult Paranormal Romance

Freak. Witch. Crazy. Schizo.

Ember Brycin has been called them all. She?s always known she?s different. No one has ever called her normal, even under the best circumstances. Bizarre and inexplicable things continually happen to her, and having two different colored eyes, strange hair, and an unusual tattoo only contributes to the gossip about her.

When the latest school explosion lands her in a facility for trouble teens, she meets Eli Dragen, who?s hot as hell and darkly mysterious. Their connection is full of passion, danger, and secrets. Secrets that will not only change her life, but what and who she is?leading her down a path she never imagined possible.

Between Light and Dark, Ember finds a world where truth and knowledge are power and no one can be trusted. But her survival depends on finding out the truth about herself. In her pursuit, she is forced between love and destiny and good and evil, even when the differences between them aren?t always clear. At worst, she will incite a war that could destroy both worlds. At best, she will not only lose her heart but her life and everyone she loves. Once the truth is out, however, there will be no going back. And she?ll definitely wish she could.

Are you working on something new? Can you tell us what?s coming next?

My next book in the Darkness Series, Fire in the Darkness, will be coming out in Fall, 2013. The first draft is finished and is now being edited. I am extremely excited about the next one. I personally feel it is even better that the first. There is so much going on. There is a lot of action and you do learn more about each character. There will be four books total in the series.

What is your dream cast for your book?

Look at my Pinterest board and see my inspiration! I also have a shortened version of it on my website. It?s a tough day at the office when you have to do research on hot male leads . . .

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?

There are a couple of songs that really get me in the writing mood for the Darkness Series: ?Killing the Light?-B.R.M.C, ?Everlasting Light?-The Black Keys, ?Howl?-Florence & The Machine, ?White Rabbit?-Jefferson Airplane, ?Slow Life?-Grizzly Bear, and Eli?s theme song ?Run Right Back?-The Black Keys. When I want to get in the mood for a fight scene I put on ?Seven Nation Army?- The White Stripes. That song gets me so pumped.

What is your guilty pleasure?

I love watching shows about ghosts like the Dead Files or The Ghost Adventures. I freak myself out, but I can?t stop watching them!

What TV show/movie/book is your guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasure TV show used to be Vampire Diaries, but I got a tad bored with it as of late and find myself more looking forward to Nashville and Scandalous. The movie would be anything with Chris Hemsworth in it! Thor?oh yeah. The book would be hard to narrow down to just one. If I had to, it would probably be Chicagoland Vampires Series by Chloe Neill.

Do you have any hobbies? Writing doesn?t count!

Then I just became extremely boring. I don?t really have other ?hobbies.? On my downtime from writing I read, hike, hang out with friends, volunteer, watch movies, and travel whenever possible.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go, and why?

Traveling is a huge passion of mine and I’ve been lucky to have traveled in many different countries. I do have a list of places I want to go next?Turkey, Russia, and Africa. My last trip I went to Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, and Portugal (to visit my friend). My trips always have a stopover in London. I lived there for over 5 years so I have friends I really miss there.

What drew you to writing this genre?

I’ve always loved fantasy. It has always been my preferred genre to read and write in. When I was a kid I would make up these elaborate fantasy/Goonie-type of stories. I haven?t lost that and still want to be a part of those worlds. I don?t know if I could write a book without it having some element of fantasy.

Are you a social butterfly or a wallflower?

A little of both. There are times, especially with my friends, that I can be extremely outgoing; and other times I can be very shy and reserved. When I am comfortable around a group, I tend to be more outgoing than shy.

Where is your favorite place to write?

A café. There are a couple I frequent a lot. If I stay home, I never get much accomplished. Granted I get to stay in my pjs but I tend to get very easily distracted.

I returned home from RT Convention last Sunday, completely exhausted. I had so much fun, met so many amazing people, and made new friends. I think there’s some rule that you can’t sleep while at conventions! I crashed and slept for 2 hours when I got home, which is unheard of for me unless I’m sick. I pretty much spent the week recovering from an RT hangover and catching up on work and such from being away. I hope to post a recap this week, at minimum just a post to share my pictures!

What are you reading?

Upcoming

This week I’ll be participating in the Bout of Books 7.0 Read-a-Thon! Or at least attempting to around work, painting my office, and prepping for company next week (read mad cleaning). I’m hoping to at least get through some audiobooks (which for me, totally counts).

I’ll also be posting an interview and a couple of guest posts for blog tours, a couple of reviews (I hope), and my WoW pick of the week. I still plan to post a RT Convention recap, I’ve just been playing catch up this week and haven’t had a chance to work on it. I’ll post it eventually .

Have a great week!

First Kiss (Heavy Influence Trilogy, #1) by Ann Marie Frohoff - Release Date: June 11, 2013

It was all about the band, until the girl next door. Her innocence is tempting. A sexually charged coming of age story set in the throes of stardom.

About an up and coming teenage rocker on the verge of stardom, when the girl next door becomes something more; they’re forced to face the harsh realities on his road to fame and the expectations of their friends and family. Sacrifices are made as everything changes as they know it.

What do you think of the cover?!

So, I really like this cover! I like the concert scene in the background, and the girl’s chin on the guy’s shoulder. But. His expression just throws me off for some reason. I really don’t know why, I think it’s the lips. Or I’m just crazy, but over all I really like it.

Please welcome Sarah Ross, author of Inhale Exhale. She’s stopping by today for an interview as part of her blog tour! Ross" src="http://bookandlatte.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Inhale-Exhale-final.jpg" width="318" height="478"/>Jillian had a plan: celebrate the end of her first year of college with an amazing summer full of beaches, barbeques, and bonfires. When her mom insists she needs a summer job, and her boyfriend spends more time with his band than with her, Jillian?s plans go down the drain.

Grant had a plan: finish his Masters, get a great job at Google, and get the hell out of Georgia. He might be giving up some of the fun of his youth, but he knows his all work and no play method would be worth it when his dreams come true.

But things never go according to plan.

When temptation brings them together and tragedy tears them apart, Jillian and Grant will be forced to choose: fight for their dreams, or fight for each other.

Top Ten Favorite Book Characters

by Sarah Ross

I?ve been an avid reader since I was four, and I studied literature in college, so limiting my favorite book characters to only ten is quite difficult. But I?m going to do my best to narrow down the very long list.

(These are in no particular order).

Book character #1:

Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. I don?t think it needs to be explained about why he would make the list. I think Mr. Darcy has been on every list ever created for top book characters, book boyfriends, or just plain awesome peeps. I think every teen girl should read Pride and Prejudice so they have a standard on the ?great romantics? bar.

Book character #2:

Charlie from The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I read this book almost ten years ago, and Charlie is the kind of character who sticks with you. I love his curiosity, and sweet innocence. Stephen Chbosky did an amazing job with every character in the book, and when the movie came out, they too were perfect. It?s not often that I find a movie just as good as the book, but this was one of them.

Book character #3:

Neville Longbottom from The Harry Potter series. I think Neville a seriously under rated character, and I wish he got more love. He?s smart, funny, and brave. He loves whole-heartedly and fights for those he loves. Plus, did you see how hot he got?! Boy is FINE now!! It?s the age of the nerd baby!

Book character #4:

Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games. There?s always a lot of talk about Peeta or Gale, but for me, the best character of the series is clearly Katniss. Her selflessness, bravery, determination, and cunning make her one of the best female heroines in any novel. I love that she puts her needs and wants on hold for the betterment of others, especially her family and those she loves. You don?t get a much more kick-ass character than Katniss!

Book character #5:

Ponyboy Curtiss and Johnny Cade from The Outsiders. This was one of my favorite books to teach, and Ponyboy and Johnny are iconic characters that need included in a list of best characters in literature. Theirs is a true tale of friendship, and teens for decades have related to and loved these two.

Book character #6:

Saxon Maclean from the Brenna Blixon series by Liz Reinhardt. This was one of the very first contemporary series I?d ever read, and *be-still-my-heart* — Saxon reached in and stole my heart. And he has yet to give it back. He?s the good-hearted bad boy that we all want to love.

Book character #7:

Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series. I love that JK Rowling gave girls everywhere a heroine who uses are brains and smart wit to get what she wants rather than by using her body. I love that she makes being nerdy cool, and taught girls everywhere that books are awesome. My favorite quote: “That’s what Hermione does. When in doubt, go to the library.”

Book Character #8:

Eric Northman from the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris. These were the first paranormal books I?ve ever read, and from the beginning I was Team Eric. He is the ultimate bad boy, the ultimate sexy, smoldering, reduce-me-to-a-puddle heartthrob. It?s easy to fall in love with Eric, especially in book four (Dead to the World) when he loses his memory. After that, there was no turning back. (Oh, and watching Alex Skarsgard on the TV version doesn?t hurt either.)

Book Character #9:

Hannibal Lector from The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris. This book scared the crap out of me! I think what made it so scary is that Dr. Lector was not just a crazy psychopath. He was smart, and often outsmarted his victims (and everyone else!). His character scared me because it seemed like he could be anyone. He blended into society so well, it kept me looking over my shoulder for weeks after I read it!

Book character #10:

Claire and Carter from Seduction and Snacks by Tara Sivec. This is, by far, the funniest book I ever read. It kept me up until the wee hours, but because I was laughing so hard I had to go read in the guest room because I kept waking my hubby up with my snorting and guffawing. These characters are sweet, silly, and insane. And I love them.

About the author:

Sarah Ross started her obsession with reading at an early age, getting in trouble for sneaking BabySitter Club and Nancy Drew books into math class in elementary school. She would read any fiction book she could get her hands on. Sarah knew it was an addiction when instead of grounding her from TV or music, her mom would take away her books as punishment (The Horror!). Her love of all things paranormal was inspired by her good friend Laurie, who convinced Sarah that books with vampires, witches, and all things shifter were amazing. After a little reluctance, she gave it a shot with the Sookie Stackhouse books, realized she was right, and the rest was history.

Sarah grew up in Pittsburgh, graduated from The University of Pittsburgh with a degree in English, and taught 8th graders to love reading as much as she does for several years. She will always be a proud member of the Steelers Nation, but couldn?t take the cold and moved her frozen tush to Florida where she now lives with her family and two cats. You will find Sarah now with her trusty Kindle in hand and toes in the sand!

This week’s WoW feature is:

3:59

Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Expected publication: September 17, 2013

Josie Byrne’s life is spiraling out of control. Her parents are divorcing, her boyfriend Nick has grown distant, and her physics teacher has it in for her. When she’s betrayed by the two people she trusts most, Josie thinks things can’t get worse.

Until she starts having dreams about a girl named Jo. Every night at the same time?3:59 a.m.

Jo’s life is everything Josie wants: she’s popular, her parents are happily married, and Nick adores her. It all seems real, but they’re just dreams, right? Josie thinks so, until she wakes one night to a shadowy image of herself in the bedroom mirror ? Jo.

Josie and Jo realize that they are doppelgängers living in parallel universes that overlap every twelve hours at exactly 3:59. Fascinated by Jo’s perfect world, Josie jumps at the chance to jump through the portal and switch places for a day.

But Jo?s world is far from perfect. Not only is Nick not Jo’s boyfriend, he hates her. Jo’s mom is missing, possibly insane. And at night, shadowy creatures feed on human flesh.

By the end of the day, Josie is desperate to return to her own life. But there?s a problem: Jo has sealed the portal, trapping Josie in this dangerous world. Can she figure out a way home before it?s too late?

From master of suspense Gretchen McNeil comes a riveting and deliciously eerie story about the lives we wish we had ? and how they just might kill you. (Goodreads)

If you follow my blog, then you know how much I loved TEN by Gretchen McNeil, so this should come as no surprise since I’m a General in the Army of Ten. I can’t freakin’ wait for this book! I want to be creeped out and hiding under a blanket again! And parallel universes? Yes please!

What book are you anxiously waiting for this week?

Please give a warm welcome to Tiffany King, author of No Attachments! She’s stopping by today for an interview as part of her blog tour! Check out her Q & A below, and then enter the giveaway below!

Ashton Garrison walked away from a privileged life in order to hide from the one thing she’s not willing to face. She knows she left behind a trail of pain, but in the long run, her betrayal will hurt less than the truth. She now has one goal: Live life to the fullest with no regrets and no attachments. She has high hopes that a move to new surroundings will provide the escape she desires, but what Ashton doesn’t count on is how fate always seems to find a way to screw up any good plan. Sometimes, when love comes knocking, the pull is too strong not to answer. Suddenly, what she thought she wanted to escape from is what Ashton now wants more than anything.

Nathan Lockton has one mission: find his target and complete the task he was hired to do?no attachments and no emotion necessary. He’s done it over and over again. What he thought was a typical lost-and-found job has turned into a life examining moment as Nathan is forced to deal with something he has always ignored–his feelings. Now faced with a decision, Nathan must choose to either follow his heart or complete the job.

Love can come when you least expect it. The question is: If the odds are stacked against you, how far are you willing to go for the one you love?

Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes & Noble

In the length of a tweet (140 characters), tell us about your book.

#No Attachments is a New Adult book about second chances at life & love and the secrets & lies that can threaten to destroy both of them.

What are your pet peeves?

LMAO, I?ll limit this to my top three since I have a lot.

1) People who forget to use their blinker when they?re turning. If you live in Florida you know why this is so flipping annoying.

2)People who scream at their kids in stores. I?m not saying kids shouldn?t be disciplined. I just hate when the parent is screaming threats so that everyone can hear.

3) Waiting for a check after we?re done eating. I get very antsy and once I?m ready to leave, I want to leave NOW.

I know I?m a complete weirdo

What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?

LOL, I was a complete nerd growing up, so I could list a million. Instead, I?ll divide it up into categories with my top three in each.

Elementary Age:

Tales of Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume

Are You There God? It?s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume

The Cat Ate My Gymsuit by Paula Danziger

Middle School Age:

Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume

Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls

The Outsiders by SE Hinton

High School Age:

Watchers by Dean Koontz

The Stand by Stephen King

Where Are the Children by Mary Higgins Clark

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

Every author has a voice and an audience. Don?t let anyone ever tell you you can?t do it. Put your soul into your writing. Care and nurture it and your readers will respect and love you for it.

What?s your favorite quote?

I?m a total Harry Potter geek, so my favorite quote is from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It always makes me teary eyed when I read it.

?The last words Albus Dumbledore spoke to the pair of us??

?Harry is the best hope we have. Trust him.?

Do you have a hidden talent?

I have total mad-skills when it comes to picking stuff up off the floor with my toes. Worthy talent? Maybe not, but it sure comes in handy, or would that be footy? Now, if I could just get the Olympics to acknowledge it as a sport I would make out like a bandit.

If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?

Persevering Against the Odds

Who or what inspired you to become an author?

My daughter initially inspired me to become a writer. My very first novel, Meant to Be, was written for her. She was my first fan and my first critic. She is still one of the first people to see my stories as they are written, and I will always value her input and what she has to say about each and every book.

What TV show/movie/book is your guilty pleasure?

LOL, this changes often. I’ve been catching up on some old shows that I didn’t watch before. At the moment, my guilty pleasure TV show is Party of Five, but I can’t wait for the current seasons of Newsroom and Dexter. My guilty movie is Pitch Perfect, and book is any of the Harry Potter?s (they?re my comfort reads).

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I have a terrible potty mouth, and my mind has a tendency to go to the gutter from even the most innocent comments.

If you weren’t a human, what would you be?

If we?re talking paranormal I?d have to be a Vampire, but only if I?m like the Cullens, LOL. If we?re talking normal, I?d be a pampered house cat. Aaah, to have such a life: eat, sleep and occasionally play with a paper ball. #Bliss

What book do you love that doesn’t get a lot of hype?

I absolutely loved Released, and Chaos, by Megan Duncan. Both books wowed me and I would love for them to wow other readers too.

What is your most embarrassing moment?

Haha, my life is riddled with embarrassing moments. I blush easily and have been known to even get embarrassed watching a sitcom on TV. My most recent embarrassing moment though was a conversation I recently had with someone I knew previously, but couldn’t remember from where. It was so awkward. They knew my name and I was trying my best with the “hey you” and “how’s it going,” but my mind was blank. It wasn?t until I walked away that I realized I did know them from years ago. #MindFail

What is your favorite part of the writing/publishing process?

My most favorite part of being a writer is when a fan tells me my book has touched them and moved them to tears. It is still very surreal for me when someone tells me they completely lost themselves in one of my stories.

Meet Koda! She’s my fur-child, and she just turned 8 years old this year. I’ll try to restrain myself from posting pictures of her every week (this is the first out of 3 total, so not bad so far). I love her to pieces.

I’m at RT Convention in Kansas City right now… I hope to have pictures from this to share with you next weekend!

Are you a planner (outline, etc.) or do you ?pants? it?

I co-wrote, Walks on the Margins, A Story of Bipolar Illness, with my son. I?d kept a journal. My son wrote from memory. Obviously, we knew the material and how the book would proceed so we didn?t outline before drafting. We did outline the book afterwards to get a complete picture of what we?d done. Then we did a lot of restructuring and rewriting, cutting material, and working on the story arc.

The process was much the same as with my Underwater Investigation Series. I start by doing some general research and plotting. I simply can?t outline my fiction because about a quarter of the way through, I don?t know what happens next. Instead, I do time lines and character descriptions. Then I write the entire book. I find comfort in Anne Lamont?s statement that everyone deserves the luxury of writing ?shitty first drafts.? Mine definitely fit that category. But it happens that I love the rewriting process. My first draft is my chance to discover meaning?what it is that I really want this book to be about. When I have a story?a beginning, middle, and end?I revise and revise. I move scenes, drop characters, cut, paste, add, subtract and then I toy with prose.

Do you write daily or sporadically when you?re inspired?

I?m afraid my writing habits are somewhat unhealthy. I tend to be driven. I know of only two remedies. One would be therapy. The other is to plant myself down in front of my computer and write. I usually write?four or five hours, five days a week. Sometimes, when I?m lost in a story, it turns into eight or ten hours. I?ve learned to protect my time and space. Since I write full-time, I conduct my day like a nine- to-five job. I have the luxury of isolation. I live on seven acres down a long gravel driveway in the Colorado mountains. Only the invited make their way to my door and only when the road is clear. Even UPS will not venture up the hill in the snowy season.

What inspired you to want to become a writer?

I don?t think I ever made a conscious decision to write. I have always been a writer, probably since I could hold a pencil. As a kid, I would write in notebooks, toy with poetry. I?ve kept a journal on and off for years. I turn to it especially when things are interesting, or when life gets tough or confusing. It allows me to remember, clarify, and get through hard times.

I?m also an avid reader. If I don?t have a book by the side of my bed at all times, I go into withdrawal. At eleven or twelve I devoured every Nancy Drew mystery published. When the last of our kids left for college, I started the first book of my Underwater Investigation Series, Swimming with the Dead.

Where is your favorite place to write?

When I?m creating a story, I write in bed?buried under a down comforter, laptop perched on my knees. In the summer I take my laptop to the deck. When I?ve completed a draft, I head to my office?a small room downstairs, with two glass filled walls. I go there for the desk?a place to spread out, shelves where my research is piled, a place to perch my storyboard, a place to rewrite. I love the light, but I?m too intent to notice what?s occurring on the other side of the glass. Sometimes I look up, surprised to see a mule deer or an elk pulling leaves off an aspen. But I?m mostly unaware, too intent moving scenes, dropping characters, cutting, pasting, adding, subtracting, and toying with prose.

What tool(s) do you use to write? Microsoft Word, Pages, Scrivener, typewriter, pen and paper, and/or napkins/toilet paper?

I use a yellow legal pad to draw story arcs and plan, but my laptop is my best friend. I use Microsoft Word.

How do you overcome writer’s block?

When the writing is hard, I enlist every ounce of will power to avoid looking for something, anything, more satisfying. Even cleaning the toilet sounds appealing. And the writing is often hard for me. I get stuck. I agonize. I question. I wonder if it?s good enough, if I?m good enough. But I just keep going. I?ve spent many hours looking a blank computer screen, but I know if I get out of the chair, the book will never get done. It can be painful. The good days keep me going, the days I peck out a word that turns to a sentence that turns to a page, the times my characters take on lives of their own and decide events for me.

What?s the best piece of advice you?ve received for writing?

Keep writing. The more you write, the better you get.

What are your thoughts on traditional publishing vs. self-publishing?

My mysteries were traditionally published with Penguin/NAL. They were wonderful to work with. However, after talking to a lot of people and doing considerable research, my son and I are self-publishing our memoir, Walks on the Margins, both as an e-book and print on demand. Self-publishing means more money?65-70 % for an e-book, a bit less for POD while royalties from traditionally published books usually run around 8%. Self-publishing also eliminates the middle men and women (publishers agents) and gives the author full control of the book?from book cover to pricing. Unless you?re a Stephen King, publishers don?t do much to market your books, so to be successful, you?ll need to do your own marketing one way or the other. And if you self-publish, the book will be out within a week as opposed to a year or more with a traditional house.

But self-publishing is a lot of work. And too many writers are putting out inferior books because they can. That hurts the author and others who chose to self-publish ?it gives self-publishing a bad rep. If you self-publish it?s important that you retain an editor. My son and I worked with an editor on the larger issues of structure, etc. and later with another, who line-edited and proofed the book. There?s nothing worse for your reputation than putting out an inferior book.

What types of writing events have you participated in (NaNoWriMo, conferences, workshops, etc.)? Which was your favorite?

Lately I?ve been going to workshops about e-publishing and marketing because we are e-publishing, Walks on the Margins, which released in April, 2013. I?ve attended a lot of mystery conferences (Left Coast Crime, Bouchercon, Malice Domestic) mostly to network and connect with friends. I recommend the Pikes Peak Writer?s Conference in Colorado Springs, one of the best around for all levels of writers and genres. Workshops are excellent and opportunities exist to meet reputable agents and editors.

What advice would you give aspiring writers?

I would say you need to sit down and do it. People talk about waiting for the muse, for inspiration. That just doesn?t happen for me, and I don?t think it happens for many other writers either. Inspiration comes when you write and if it doesn?t, well you have to write anyway. You need to start and finish. If you wait, it never happens. You’ve got to go sit down at the computer or pick up the pen and write. Sometimes you’ll look at your work and think ?What junk,” but that’s okay. Don?t be too hard on yourself. You can always go back and rework.

When you believe you?ve written a great piece, then send it out if you intend to publish traditionally. And when rejection appears in your mailbox, send it out again. Don?t be discouraged by rejection. All writers, among them best selling novelists and prize winners, have file drawers full of rejections.

If you?re looking for a story about a good, humble girl, who?s been hurt by someone she thought she could trust, only to find out she?s not as vulnerable as she thought she was and discovers an empowering side of herself that falls in love with the guy who helps her find that self, blah, blah, blah…then you?re gonna? hate my story.

Because mine is not the story you read every time you bend back the cover of the latest trend novel. It?s not the ?I can do anything, now that I?ve found you/I?m misunderstood but one day you?ll find me irresistible because of it? tale. Why? Because, if I was being honest with you, I?m a complete witch. There?s nothing redeeming about me. I?m a friend using, drug abusing, sex addict from Los Angeles. I?m every girlfriend?s worst nightmare and every boy?s fantasy.

I?m Sophie Price…And this is the story about how I went from the world?s most envied girl to the girl no one wanted around and why I wouldn?t trade it for anything in the world. (Goodreads)

I have such mixed feelings about VAIN. Overall, I really liked it. There were things I loved about this novel, but there were parts that just didn?t work for me.

I really struggled through the first few chapters of this book. Sophie Price is manipulative, mean, and utterly vain. She uses every person that she comes across, and is a hollow shell of a person. Honestly, I questioned whether I wanted to finish reading this book because I was so disgusted with her, her character was just over the top. I didn?t think she would be able to redeem herself. Which really, I think this is what Fisher Amelie was going for, and she did it very well!

The first 20% of this book is like watching a train wreck, as Sophie is on a path of self-destruction. Then the story takes an unexpected turn when Sophie is sentenced to work for six months in Africa, and that?s when I had to know what was in store for Sophie.

Things I loved? I absolutely loved Ian Aberdeen. He?s Sophie?s co-worker, eventual friend and love interest, and he?s most definitely swoon worthy. I loved that Ian could see right through Sophie. I also loved that most of this story took place in Uganda. The setting was vivid in my mind and I could see the red dirt and tall grass — its fierce beauty along side extreme poverty and devastating sadness.

There were parts of VAIN where the execution of the story didn?t work for me. Where I felt like the author was throwing the social/political issues and life lessons in my face. I think this same story could have been told more subtly and it would have been even more powerful.

VAIN, for me, was so unexpected. It?s a coming-of-age redemption story that will make you feel the entire range of emotions!

Note: This story is new adult and contains sexual scenes and drug use.

Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan . . .

But for Cath, being a fan is her life ? and she?s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it?s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath?s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can?t let go. She doesn?t want to.

Now that they?re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn?t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She?s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can?t stop worrying about her dad, who?s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

Or will she just go on living inside somebody else?s fiction? (Goodreads)

A book about fangirls… and moving on?! Yup, I have to read this.

** Recommended for ages 17+ due to sexual situations, language and mature subject matter **

(Goodreads)

No Attachments was an emotional roller coaster of a ride. It?s light-hearted, yet serious, with moments that made me laugh, and others that made me cry. I had no idea that this was going to be such a tearjerker!

I really liked both the main characters, Ashton and Nathan, and how the story was told from both of their perspectives. I loved how Ashton lived each day to the fullest, and is determined to check off things from her list, even if it means doing something that she?d never do otherwise.

The only reason I didn?t rate this higher is because I felt that some of the witty dialogue and plot devices seemed forced. Overall though, I really enjoyed this story, and I look forward to reading more by Tiffany King! I?d recommend No Attachments to fans of New Adult contemporary romance.

I’ve participated in one of these before, and it was so much fun. I’m really looking forward to this upcoming Read-A-Thon. You should join us! Here’s more details:

I’m already eyeing my bookshelf (physical and e-books) and starting to put together a list of books I want to read. My plan is to publish a Bout of Books Updates post on the start date, May 13th, and just update that single post with my progress during the week. I may include a list of books as a goal, but I’m always hesitant to do this because I’m such a mood reader. It’s a strange phenomenon, but as soon as specify a list, suddenly all my other books look more appealing!

I’ll also be socializing when I can, and posting updates to Twitter with the #boutofbooks hashtag. This is such a fun part (for me) with participating in these kind of events. Of course, this is dependent on how work goes that week, and if I have time.

Let me know if you sign up so we can cheer each other along, and happy reading!

The post I’m participating in Bout of Books 7.0! appeared first on A Book and a Latte.
