We’re carrying this design into this year’s Festival Guide, and we’re excited that your photographs will really shine this year (on the Web, in print, and in the ACP iPhone app!). Here’s a sample listing below from last year’s Festival, presented with the new design.

As you prepare your event or exhibition for this year’s Festival, remember to prepare a great jpg that will make your listing shine. Your jpg will need to be at least 1000 pixels wide. Here’s an example.

“Please join us for the opening reception of Safe, photographs by Sandra-Lee Phipps at whitespace. For Safe, Sandra-Lee Phipps’ first exhibition at whitespace gallery and in Atlanta, Phipps presents two series of photographs that deal with the quest for safety in our cultural environment of fear. These works are set in the untamed forests and rural farmlands of Maine, a place of personal reflection and security for Phipps. Interweaving archetypal images with a symbolic color of power, protection and danger – orange, Phipps explores the fragile sense of self, self-preservation and her role as an artist within this expansive landscape.

“[I]nside the word emergency is emerge; from an emergency new
things come forth. The old certainties are crumbling fast, but danger and possibility are sisters.” – Rebecca Solnit

In the second set of works, two figures emerge and a tension is revealed between what is known and unknown in times of transition. Though identical, the young girls wear colors signifying their difference, but also their bond – orange and blue. Wearing complementary colors, though visual opposites, the figures are intrinsically bound together.

Sandra-Lee Phipps is an Atlanta-based artist whose work explores the representation of self in both documentary and fine art photography. She has shown her work in exhibitions along the east coast and is recognized for her archival prints of the band R.E.M. She received her BA in communication arts journalism/photography from University of Georgia and a MA in studio arts/photographic and computer arts from New York University. After completing her master’s program, Phipps taught at NYU and later Rockport College in Maine. She is currently a professor of photography at Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta. In addition to her work as an educator, Sandra-Lee Phipps was a contributing photographer for the Village Voice and published a bi-weekly column, “streetstyle.”"

“I am frequently asked by people who have not seen my work why I spend my life documenting one simple place like Decatur County, Georgia. People confuse simple with small; they’re not the same thing. There are no simple places or simple lives. The problems Decatur Countians face may be different from the problems of urban life, but they are no less threatening and therefore exacting. Fulfillment and self-respect are as necessary but elusive in Decatur County as elsewhere.

Decatur County, like all places, was shaped by its history and geography. Real circumstances are richer than anything we can invent, and photographs made from them have unique credibility and economy. When one searches for a specific image, he blinds himself to everything else. He is apt to let a possible photograph pass unnoticed that is better than what he set out to find. For several years, I was fascinated by old photographs on gravestones. I carefully sifted through every cemetery I knew. On a dreary day I was walking through an isolated graveyard in a remote part of the county. Cows were grazing just outside. I passed a monument topped by a marble lamb quietly watching them. It was both droll and, because of the light and the misting rain, beautiful. I like the resulting photograph better than any of my pictures of pictures on gravestones.

As the project grew some problems became vexingly abstract. I discovered slowly over a long period of time that while I was making photographs of specific places and individuals, I was also getting from the series a collective sentiment, something stronger and more pointed than the individual images. It was an effect worth striving to enhance. It required an enormous amount of contemplation, both of the photographs in the series and of my affections and sympathies for the material. I tried to gain a sense of what was missing and the direction I should take to properly move forward.

To most people and by any objective appraisal Decatur County is aesthetically banal. The previous generation who created it could barely afford to be expedient, much less stylish. Most photographers would decide from a superficial assessment that there was little to photograph. But in important ways Decatur County is the perfect artifact and documents the quality and values of our predecessor’s sojourn.

The instinct to survive and understand something of life, to love and be loved, to maintain a certain dignity, self-respect, and attain some degree of success, at least in our own eyes, motivate us consciously and unconsciously. We have our work, our faith, our social and economic constraints to deal with, and it is on one or more of these fronts that our major battles are joined. Decatur County is neither simple nor insignificant. Life there is like life everywhere, and I cannot think of a higher goal than understanding what we can of it.”

Atlanta Photography Group has a new call for entries for their upcoming show, judged by Stuart Horodner and Beth Lilly. Deadline is May 18th.

APG Atlanta Photography Group
Concepts: the Post-Apocalyptic Photo Challenge
A Fresh Look at Photographic Ideas and Materials

Jurored by
Stuart Horodner, artistic director of Atlanta Contemporary Art Center
and Beth Lilly, artist and educator

For this year’s Concepts Show, APG is issuing a special challenge to photographers. In the past decade, digital technologies opened up new opportunities, while at the same time our dependence on it has become extensive. If disaster should strike and the power grid fail, how could you continue your work as a photographer? APG wants to see what you would do as an artist if you no longer had access to your digital files and could no longer plug into the grid.

We propose to start a dialogue by posing questions. Is our digital dependency causing us to overlook the image-making potential of new materials and knowledge that hasn’t yet been used in fine art photography? On the flip side, are there creative new ways to use vintage photographic methods? Is it even possible today to utilize chemical processes without electricity?

We’d like to see work that experiments with installations and presentations that incorporate optics and visual phenomena. Consider mining the remains of civilizations past by finding new uses for light sensitive materials. Other options might include using existing prints as raw material for a new piece.

For more information, entry form and FAQ’s, please visit the APG website. www.apgphoto.org

Entry deadline: May 18, 2013
Show Opens: June 28, 2013
Entry fee $35.00 members $25 student members
One year membership $35/$25 students
