Billy loses his job just as he learns that Julie is pregnant and, desperately intent upon providing a decent life for his family, he is coerced into being an accomplice to a robbery. Caught in the act and facing the certainty of prison, he takes his own life and is sent ‘up there.’ Billy is allowed to return to earth for one day fifteen years later, and he encounters the daughter he never knew. She is a lonely, friendless teenager, her father’s reputation as a thief and bully having haunted her throughout her young life. How Billy instills in both the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testimony to the power of love.

Sunday, May 9, Boardwalk Hall

Classic R&B artists will team up for a special one-time celebratory Mother’s Day performance on Saturday, May 9 at 7 p.m. The Isley Brothers, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds , Fantasia, and Eric Benet will hit the stage at Boardwalk Hall for the 7th annual Mother’s Day Music Festival. This show is proudly presented by Platinum Productions.

About the Artists:

• The Isley Brothers
Born in Cincinnati and raised in a household ringing with the sounds of gospel music, The Isley Brothers began performing together in the 1950s as teenagers. This was perhaps not surprising as their father was a professional singer and their mother was a pianist who accompanied the family in church. They first made waves in 1959 with “Shout” (eventually a million-seller) but didn’t fully break through until 1962, with the Top 20 hit “Twist and Shout” (later made even more famous by The Beatles).
Their renown was cemented with the indelible “It’s Your Thing” (1969), which topped R&B charts, ascended to #2 on the Top 40, ultimately sold five million copies, won The Isley Brothers a Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance and transmitted the group’s power as songwriters and producers. This having been validated, the Brothers nonetheless continually enjoyed hits with songs written by others, including their 1971 take on Stephen Stills’ “Love the One You’re With,” which rose to #18. 1973’s “That Lady (Part 1),” a #6 chart entry, went on to sell two million units. 1975’s “Fight the Power (Part 1),” an R&B #1 and Top 40 #4, shone gold, and the Isley’s’ Harvest for the World album (1976) sold more than 500,000 copies in three days. In 1990, Ronald Isley refashioned the Brothers’ “This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)” with Rod Stewart, scoring a #10; the original recording hit #12 in 1966.
All told, The Isley Brothers - who’ve encompassed two generations of talent - can claim 23 gold, platinum and multiplatinum albums, among them 3 + 3 (1973), The Heat Is On (1975), Go for Your Guns (1977), Showdown (1978), Winner Take All (1979), Go All the Way (1980), Grand Slam (1981), Between the Sheets (1983) and Mission to Please (1996).

• Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds
Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds is an American R&B musician, singer–songwriter and record producer. He has written and produced over 26 No. 1 R&B hits throughout his career. He has won 10 Grammy Awards. He worked on the Lil Wayne album Tha Carter III, on the Kanye West-produced “Comfortable.” He also worked with R&B singer Monica for her sixth studio album Still Standing.

The Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton College will host a Meet the Artist Reception for Glynnis Reed from 6 - 8 p.m. on Friday, February 13. Reed’s “Ascending Beauty Series” will be on display in the Atlantic City Gallery, at the Arts Garage, from February 5 until March 6. The reception, which coincides with the Garage’s Second Friday event, will include live music performed by Dynasty Marie, along with refreshments provided by The Iron Room.

Reed creates her work using mixed media, photography, and painting, as it reflects her diversity in imagery. Her technique draws influences from Baroque painting, magical realism and medieval religious art, which express her interest in, and explorations of, “wild natural environments,” urban landscape, and where the two meet. Her interjection of the human form in her digital photo and mixed media collages creates an internal complexity of human interactions.

Her “Ascending Beauty Series” is a collection of Reed’s portraits of African American women. The models—family members, close friends and women Glynnis has admired from afar—have played an important role in her life. To quote the artist on this series, “An exquisite beauty radiates from each of these women. They are self-possessed, projecting a daring aura of eroticism, splendid angelic countenances, and a striking expression of female masculinity . . .”

Reed is a graduate of the University of California, where she received her MFA in Studio Art. She was born in Los Angeles, California, and currently works and lives in South Jersey. Reed’s work has been exhibited in local, national and international venues. In 2011, to promote international and interdisciplinary exchange, Reed participated in an international artist-in-residency-program for emerging artists from all over the world, at AIR Krems in Krems, Austria. While in Austria, she had a solo exhibit of her work at the Kunstraum Arcade Gallery in Moedling. Reed is a recipient of the “Visions from the New California” award which granted her a residency at Djerassi Resident Artists Program in Northern California. Currently, her artwork has been assembled for a twenty year retrospective exhibit at the Atlantic Cape Community College Art Gallery in Mays Landing, NJ.

Reed takes pride in teaching art at the Texas Avenue School in Atlantic City. She has students participating in the Links 46th Annual Black History Month Art Exhibit “Eat Smart; Be Active; Get Healthy” Poster Contest. At 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 14, artist Ted Ellis will present the Awards to the Outstanding Student Artists. You can learn more about Glynnis Reed by visiting her website at: http://www.glynnisreed.com

The Opening Reception at The Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton College is free and open to the public. For more information call (609) 626.3805, or visit http://artsgarageac.com

On Saturday, Jan. 17, Ocean City will hold its 25th annual celebration to honor the life and legacy of DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. This was the first ceremony of its kind in Cape May County.

It was organized by the late Rozelia Cobb, a popular, special education teacher at the Ocean City Intermediate School. Rozelia realized the importance of the Civil Rights leader. She believed that young people should learn about his contributions and be involved in the event.

The Ceremony will be held 1pm at the High School’s Hughes Performing Arts Center, 6th and Atlantic Ave. You will enjoy a great tribute of music, history and fellowship. It will be followed by a soul food dinner in the high school cafeteria prepared by the talented ladies of the Shiloh Baptist and Macedonia United Methodist Churches; donations will be accepted.

There will also be a DAY OF SERVICE honoring Dr. King on Monday, Jan. 19 from 9am-noon. Sign up for supply distribution and lunch will take place in the Senior Auditorium of the Community Center, 18th and Simpson Ave. For information, contact Charlotte Moyer, 399-6111 ext. 9711.

For more information on the tribute events, contact Councilman Antwan McClellan (609) 517-6593 or Councilman Keith Hartzell (609) 289-1484.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on Jan. 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. King, both a Baptist Minister and civil rights activist, had a tremendous impact on race relations, beginning in the mid 1950s. Through his activism, he played a pivotal role in ending the legal segregation of African-American citizens in the South and other areas of the nation. King is also responsible for the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Dr. King received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 among other honors. He continues to be remembered as one of the most honored African American leaders in history and his “I Have a Dream Speech” is often quoted. King’s life and work have been honored by a national holiday. Schools and public buildings have been named after him and a memorial on Independence Mall in Washington, D.C. is dedicated to him. He is applauded for being a visionary leader who was deeply committed to achieving social justice through non-violent means.

The Reverend Gregory Johnson will conclude Ocean City’s celebration with a recitation of Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream speech.” This is always an inspiring program and the organizers look forward to community participation.
