The setting drops us into the mid‑1970s, a time that’s warm, textured, and perfect for what the story needs. And without spoiling anything, the heart of this tale is about how Jim and Mark become fast friends. Not the later chapters of their lives, not the adult complications — just the spark that starts it all.

The writing is flowing smoothly, scene after scene arriving with that welcome sense of momentum. After a stretch of feeling blocked, it’s a relief to be moving again.

After a fair amount of wrestling with KDP’s settings, templates, and mysterious page‑count limits, The Jim Garraty Chronicles will soon be available as a hardcover. I had to change the trim size because the book crossed the 550‑page threshold, and that change forced me to rebuild the cover from scratch. Not exactly the smoothest process, but the end result looks surprisingly good.

The hardcover collects all four stories — Reunion, Reunion: Coda, Comings and Goings, and the bonus origin story, The Summer of Two Movies. Seeing them bound together on cream paper, with a proper spine and a clean layout, gives the whole project a sense of permanence I didn’t expect. It feels like the right way to present Jim Garraty’s early years.

For the author photo, I went with a picture from my college days, taken when I received a journalism award. It seemed fitting to use an image from the time when writing first became part of my identity.

The hardcover is priced at $29.99. I don’t expect a crowd of buyers — this edition is mostly for me, and maybe a few friends who’ve followed Jim’s story over the years. But I’m glad I made it. Sometimes you publish something simply because it feels good to finish it and put it into the world.

Every writer has experienced it: the moment when a first‑draft choice plants itself in the soil of the story and refuses to be uprooted. You tell yourself you’ll revisit it later. You assume you’ll refine it, replace it, elevate it. But when “later” arrives, the choice is still there — stubborn, insistent, quietly correct.

That’s what happened with Somewhere.

When I drafted the 1998 version of Jim and Marty’s chorus‑room scene, I didn’t agonize over the song selection. I didn’t make a spreadsheet of musical options. I didn’t weigh thematic resonance or lyrical symbolism. I simply wrote Somewhere — almost casually — and moved on.

And then, years later, when the real revisions began, I discovered something surprising.

I couldn’t change it.

Not because I lacked alternatives. Not because I was sentimentally attached to the draft. Not because I was afraid to revise.

I couldn’t change it because the story wouldn’t let me.

The First-Draft Instinct

There’s a particular kind of creative instinct that shows up early in a project — before the architecture is built, before the themes are articulated, before the characters have fully revealed themselves. These instincts often feel arbitrary at the time. They’re placeholders, or so we think.

But sometimes they’re not placeholders at all. Sometimes they’re the story speaking before the writer knows the language.

That’s what Somewhere was: a moment of unconscious clarity. I didn’t yet understand Jim’s emotional landscape the way I do now. I didn’t yet understand Marty’s interiority. I didn’t yet understand how the canceled 1983 Spring Concert would become a mythic hinge in their lives.

But the instinct was right. The story knew before I did.

Why It Stayed

As the Garratyverse grew — as Jim deepened, as Marty sharpened, as the emotional architecture of their relationship became clearer — Somewhere revealed itself as the only song that made sense.

It was the perfect emotional temperature for Jim: longing without confession, hope without exposure, tenderness without risk.

It was the perfect mirror for Marty: intuitive, gentle, quietly yearning, not yet aware of the depth she was stepping into.

It was the perfect symbol for the canceled concert: a dream interrupted, a moment suspended, a duet that never reached the stage.

And it was the perfect motif for the decades that followed — a song that could grow with Jim, and grow with Marty until her story ended at thirty‑three.

Some songs freeze characters in time. This one aged with them.

The Mystery of Authorial Intent

People often talk about “authorial intent” as if it’s a deliberate, conscious force — the writer making purposeful choices with full awareness of their meaning. And sometimes that’s true.

But often, intent is discovered retroactively.

The writer makes a choice in draft one. The story grows around it. And years later, the writer realizes the choice was never arbitrary.

It was foundational.

That’s what happened with Somewhere. It wasn’t a decision I made after careful analysis. It was a decision the story made, and I spent the next two decades discovering why.

The Song That Wouldn’t Leave

In the end, Somewhere stayed because it belonged. It was the emotional thesis of Jim and Marty’s relationship — the dream of a place where things could be different, the ache of almost, the hope of someday.

It was the song of two people who loved each other at the wrong moment, in the wrong way, with the right hearts.

I just grabbed my Amazon package from the mailbox — the newly revised edition of The Jim Garraty Chronicles: A Life in Four Movements. I haven’t had time to pore over it yet (the Postal Service also delivered my MasterCard bill, which immediately reminded me of August 12), but I did check the trouble spots that bothered me in the first printing.

This copy was printed yesterday in Orlando, so it’s clearly based on the updated file I uploaded to KDP last week. The duplicated paragraph in Reunion: Coda is gone, the back‑matter headers are still stubbornly capitalized thanks to Kindle Create, but the series name is finally correct: The Jim Garraty Chronicles. With four stories in the canon now, it fits.

I’ve put the revised edition on my bookshelf, and I’m confident the major issues have been fixed. After three years living inside Jim Garraty’s world, I’m giving myself permission to read other authors for a while. There’s another Garraty story on my list, but it’ll come when it’s ready.

In Reunion: Coda, Maddie shows up at the Moonglow Club carrying a Book Culture bag. Jim notices the bag. The reader notices the bag. No one — and I mean no one — knows what’s in the bag.

And she’s not telling.

Cut to real life.

I recently wandered over to Book Culture’s website — the same Book Culture whose bag Maddie is carrying — and discovered that my books are available through their online ordering system.

Allegedly Sunday. But I’ve learned not to get emotionally attached to those dates. They’re more aspiration than promise.

Now, I understand that author’s copies aren’t Amazon’s top priority. They don’t generate royalties. They don’t count toward sales metrics. They’re essentially the literary equivalent of a backstage pass—useful, sentimental, and entirely at the mercy of the print-on-demand gods.

Not a single edit this week.

Part of the blame falls on Kindle Create, which seems determined to mangle my subheadings. But if I’m honest, the deeper culprit is doubt. Why release the collection now, when sales of the individual books have been... let’s say, modest?

Back when I was writing Reunion: Coda, especially through that frigid New Hampshire winter, I held onto hope. I imagined fans of Reunion: A Story rallying—leaving glowing reviews, spreading the word, giving my writing career a gentle nudge. Some did. A few loyal readers picked up Reunion: Coda in hardcover, paperback, and Kindle formats. But overall, sales have been underwhelming. And yes, it’s dimmed my spark a little.

October Reflections: Royalties, Audiobooks, and the Quiet Triumphs of Creative Care

This morning brought a small but welcome surprise: a modest uptick in my Kindle Direct Publishing royalties. Someone picked up a paperback copy of Save Me the Aisle Seat, my first self-published book—a collection of movie reviews originally written for the now-closed site Epinions.

I’ve always had mixed feelings about that book. Of the four titles I’ve published, it’s the one I’m least fond of—not just because I rushed it out in 2012 so my mom could see it while she was still with us, but also because I believe it doesn’t measure up to my fiction work: Reunion: A Story, Reunion: Coda, and Comings and Goings – The Art of Being Seen. Many of the reviews weren’t edited as carefully as they should have been, and I gave away more plot points than I intended. Still, the introduction—written specifically for the book—feels true and heartfelt. That part came from a place of love.

Sometimes I consider retiring Save Me the Aisle Seat, but I probably won’t. Despite its flaws, readers seem to appreciate it. It holds a 4.7-star average on Amazon, and every review has been positive. More importantly, it’s the only book my mom saw before she passed in 2015. Even as her dementia progressed, she kept her copy close, resting it on her hospital-style bed until the very end. That memory alone makes it worth keeping in my catalog.

With October still young, I’m hoping for a modest bump in sales before November rolls around. Honestly, it would be a bit disheartening if my royalties for the month amounted to just $6.16!

I’ll admit, I wasn’t initially enthusiastic about releasing Audible versions of the Garratyverse. I’ve lived with hearing loss since I was 12 and need a hearing aid, so audiobooks aren’t my preferred format. I rarely buy them unless they’re unabridged, and even then, I seldom listen. The idea of transforming my stories from a reading experience into a listening one didn’t exactly thrill me.

But I’m not working on new stories at the moment, and at least one longtime reader told me she now listens exclusively to audiobooks. That seems to be a growing trend, so I decided to explore ACX and see how I might reach a broader audience.
