Getting Dressed for Battle

The life that we live is a spiritual battle. Can you imagine if we could look into the heavens around us and actually see the battle that is taking place? We would completely understand why we need to put on our spiritual battle gear. I bet we’d never go out without it again! Instead, we walk around taking blows day by day from the enemy forces around us because we’re not dressed for the battle! We need to get spiritually dressed for battle every day, and Ephesians 6:13-17 tells us how:

“[13] Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. [14] Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, [15] and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. [16] In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. [17] Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Eph 6:13-17

First, we must take a stand against the enemy. Plant your feet, face your enemy, and take a stance of readiness. The times that we get cold-cocked in the head are when we aren’t watching out for the enemy. You’ve got to know his schemes and be on the lookout for them. If you don’t believe you have an enemy then he’s already won the battle. So know your enemy and stand firm in God knowing that “…greater is He who is in you, than he who is in the world.” (1 Jn 4:4 KJV)

As you stand firm, put on the belt of truth. Knowing the truth means knowing God’s Word, knowing Jesus Christ, who is “the Truth” (Jn 14:6) and knowing the truth of who you are in Christ. Did you know that you are the righteousness of God in Christ if you are a believer?

Romans 3:22 says, “This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.”

Did you know that you are a co-heir with Christ if you are a believer? Romans 8:16-17 says, “[16] The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. [17] Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”

These are just a couple of examples of who you are in Christ. Take the promises of God and know who you are in Christ. Don’t let the enemy steal your heritage from you.

Next, put the breastplate of righteousness in place. The breastplate covers your heart, which is the seat of your emotions. Emotions can run wild if you let them, so you need to cover, or reign in your ungodly emotions. We have many emotions that aren’t godly, such as fear, worry, rage, hate, impatience, etc. We need to ask God to show us His love so we can walk in it. The more we understand the love of God, the more loving we are able to be to others.

The shoes of the gospel of peace are the next clothing for a warrior of God. Walking in God’s peace is the best way to avoid battles. As believers, Jesus tells us that He has given us His peace already. What we need to do is “walk” in it, so ask God to help you walk in the peace that Jesus has already given to us. (Jn 14:27)

Take up the shield of faith. When you hold up your faith as a shield, it will extinguish all the fiery darts of the enemy. Some days you can just feel the downpour of fiery darts from dusk to dawn. But when we hold up our shields, those darts will fall to the ground. God gives us the measure of faith we need for any given situation. (Rom 12:3) He grows our faith as we walk with Him. We need more faith the stronger we grow in Christ because the enemy will come at us in different ways and in different degrees.

The helmet of salvation is the next piece of our armor. The helmet covers your head, so this piece of armor is a spiritual cover for your mind. It is so important to think about what you’re thinking about that I can’t stress it enough. The biggest battlefield you have is in your mind. Cast down wrong thinking and make your thoughts obedient to Christ. (2 Cor 10:5)

Finally, take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. How can you use the word of God in battle? First, you’ve got to be in the word to know the word. Once you know it, you can speak it back to the enemy just like Jesus did when He was being tempted in the wilderness. (Mt 4:1-11; Lk 4:1-13)

All of these pieces of armor work together to give you the spiritual strength you need to stand against the enemy. Pray this armor of God over your life every day for the strength to stand. I like to pray the armor from top down to make it easier for me to remember. I hope you’ll use this prayer or a similar one to help you get dressed for battle every day. Remember, whether you’re dressed or not, you’re still in a battle every day.

Dear Heavenly Father,
I ask that You would give me the strength to stand and fight any battles that come my way today. I put on the helmet of salvation to protect my mind from any thoughts that are not of You. Help me to recognize them and cast them down. I put on the breastplate of righteousness which covers my heart and my emotions. Help me to see Your love for me so I can walk in love toward others. I put on the belt of truth knowing the truth of Your word, knowing Your Son, who is the Truth, and knowing the truth of who I am in Christ. I put on the shoes of peace. I choose to walk in the peace that You have given to me today. I take up the shield of faith which will extinguish all the fiery darts of the enemy. I ask that you grow my faith as I walk in Your ways. And I take up the sword of the Spirit. As I read Your word today, teach me, Lord. Write Your word upon my heart so I can speak it throughout the day. Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Thank You, Jesus! In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

WHAT IS FAMILY!

The other day, I saw a bumper sticker that said “We are all family/We all have value.” Immediately, I thought to myself....that’s not true. But, then I thought “yes it is true, well, partly true.” As humans we are all family. God created Adam and Eve and as their descendents we are all part of the human family.

There are two types of family, the human family and the Christian family. Christians are the children of Gods’ adopted family. An interesting thing happens when you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and find a church to join. You immediately gain a family! I don’t use this term loosely, your church becomes your family. Not only is your immediate church your family, but Christians from all walks of life become your family because all members of the Christian family have the Holy Spirit within them. The Spirit recognizes the Spirit in other believers! So, in that case, all Christians are part of two families....the human family.....and God’s family.

What about the people that have not accepted Christ as their personal savior? Well, they are obviously part of the human family and they are part of the worlds’ family. What kind of family is that? A lost family, a wondering family, a searching family, a family seeking satisfaction but never finding it, a fickle family (running from one fleshly delight to another). A family that does not stand up for each other, but tears each other down (after all, it is a dog eat dog world), a greedy family, a selfish family and a very unhappy family.

Ok, now, what about the value thing you ask? We all have value, because we were all created by God! We weren’t just created by God as an after thought, He put much thought into every one of us long before the universe was ever created! You are very valuable and every person in the world has value! But, unfortunately, not every person in the world is a child of God.

I spent Friday night and most of Saturday with fifty women on our church retreat and that is where I really began to think about what it means to be a child of God, to be a part of Gods’ family. I’m not a night person, so I decided to call it a “night” around 10:15pm, however, most of the women decided to stay up and play a “very loud and noisy game” in the room next door to the sleeping area. Have you ever tried to sleep in a “hen house?” Me neither, but I imagine the noise level in both were comparable. Every time I began to doze off, the noise level got louder. But you know what? I didn’t even think about complaining, in fact, I smiled to myself, this is family and this is God’s love manifested in my sisters! These women are my sisters in God’s family having fun, enjoying fellowship with each other and building relationships!

Saturday dawned bright and early! We were all exhausted. Some of the younger women said that they only got a couple hours of sleep. I guess the rest of us were lucky because we were able to sneak in three or four hours, but we were happy, we were together and we were family!

“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.” 1 John 3:1-3 (NIV)

Godly Sorrow

“I’m sorry!” she said as she slammed the door behind her and stormed off.

Have you experienced this scene before? How easy it is to say “I’m sorry” when really, you’re not sorry at all. Oh, maybe you’re sorry you got caught, but not truly sorry for what you did. Just because someone says “I’m sorry” doesn’t mean that they’ve turned from that sin. How can we know when someone truly is sorry? God’s word tells us that godly sorrow brings us to repent, or to turn from our sin and turn to God.

[9] yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance… [10] Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 2 Cor 7:9-10

The first thing we need to understand is that we all sin, and because of that, we need a Savior who will cover our sins and give us access to the personal relationship we need with God. When sorrow for our sin leads to repentance God forgives us and we are able to stand before Him. If we don’t ask for God’s salvation, then we will be faced with death in this life and in the eternal life to come. In the end, we really don’t know if someone has truly repented, only God knows. But you can see the fruit of true repentance through a person’s actions, given time.

[20] First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and to the Gentiles also, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds. Acts 26:20

So, should you forgive them? Yes! God tells us to forgive others. We are to forgive them with a sacrificial love like Jesus gave for us on the cross. You don’t have to wait until they show repentance. Jesus didn’t wait for us to repent before He went to the cross.

[13] Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Col 3:13

Forgiveness is not only for the person who sinned, but it’s also for the person who was sinned against. Forgiveness heals your heart, and keeps bitterness from growing there.

So, what if you’re the one who messed up and sinned? How do you know you’re forgiven? God promises us, in His Word, to forgive us when we are repentant. When we’re forgiven, God doesn’t throw our sin back in our faces—He remembers them no more. He puts them out of His sight.

[9] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 Jn 1:9

[12] as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. Ps 103:12

How far is the east from the west? Point your right hand to the east and your left hand to the west. God loves us this much! Notice how much your hand position looks like that of Jesus on the cross. He died so your sins could be removed as far as the east is from the west. What a Savior!

Once you’ve asked God for forgiveness, receive it from Him. If you find yourself asking for forgiveness over and over for something you did way back when, you probably haven’t received God’s forgiveness. You may not even feel like you’ve been forgiven, but don’t go by your feelings. Receive, in faith, that God has forgiven you because that’s what His word says. Then thank Him for his forgiveness. What greater gift could He give us than forgiveness from sin and a restored relationship with Him?

In your process of repentance, make sure you ask those you’ve hurt to forgive you as well. Think about all the people who were affected by your sin and ask each one to forgive you. It’s their decision whether to forgive you or not, but it will give you a clear conscience that you’ve done your best to make things right. God will work on their heart, you just do your part!

What’s easier to say… “I’m sorry”, or “Please forgive me”? “Sorry” could just mean that you feel bad about the situation, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve turned from your sin. Asking for forgiveness means you have accepted your responsibility in the situation. It’s a way to heal the hearts of all who are involved and goes deeper than just saying “I’m sorry.” Asking for forgiveness is not easy, and it’s definitely humbling, but isn’t the healing worth it?

Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for sending your Son to die for me so that I can have forgiveness. It’s through Your loving act on the cross that I am able to forgive others with the love you have revealed to me. Show me where I need to ask for forgiveness, and also where I need to forgive, then give me the strength to follow through. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

A STORY WORTH TELLING!

It seems lately that everywhere I turn I keep hearing about God’s love and how much He loves us and how we should reflect God’s love not only to a lost and dying world but also, to our Christian family. Not long ago I ran across a gentleman who stopped me as I was walking to my car. He began to cry as he told me that his wife had just had surgery that very morning and he didn’t have enough money to buy gas so that he could go see her at the hospital. Well, of course, I immediately thought that the man wanted the money to go buy drugs or booze. I gave him the ten dollars that he asked for, but I told him that I was giving it to him for his wife and that Jesus would know what he used the money for. I then said “God bless you” and we parted ways.

Two things about that incident have been bothering me. The first thing that bothered me is that the gentleman said that he had been driving around since 6:00am (this incident occurred around 10 or 11) trying to get enough money to buy gas with. I’ve thought back over that incident several times and I think to myself “ok...the amount of gas that you burned up by driving around, couldn’t you have just used that gas to go straight to the hospital and why weren’t you at the hospital while your wife was having surgery?” The second thing that has been bothering me was my attitude! He didn’t need to hear a sermon from me that Jesus would know what he did with the money. What has been bothering me about that whole episode is that it was not about the gentleman, it was about me, it was about my attitude! Did I show the love of God to this gentleman? I don’t think so!

As Christians, we should jump at every opportunity to show Gods’ love! Doesn’t God tell us in Psalm 50:12b “....for the world is mine, and all that is in it.” So, why should I be concerned about what the man spent Gods’ ten dollars on?

In John 15:12 we are commanded by Jesus to love each other just as he has loved us. I admit when I gave the gentleman the money, I was not doing it out of love. I was doing what a Christian was supposed to do. That’s like me telling God “well, you’re God, you’re supposed to forgive my sins!” But, before creation, God chose to love me! Before I ever heard the name Jesus, He chose to die on the cross as a sacrifice for my sins! It’s not like I was being asked to give up my life for this gentleman, but God did expect me to show His love to a fellow human who needed compassion.

Another thing that bothers me about this incident is not only did I not show Gods’ love, but I was also being hypocritical to someone less fortunate by saying “God bless you!” Instead he should have been saying “God bless you” to me because I was conveying a “pious” attitude by saying that to him without love. In retrospect, I realize now that I should have handed him the money, walked quietly to my car and prayed for both the gentleman and his wife.

Why is this a story worth telling? Because it’s a story about Gods’ love and how I failed to show that love to someone in need. It’s a story worth telling so that I can remember and learn from it. It’s a story worth telling so that the next time God gives me an opportunity to show His love....I’ll remember and hopefully I won’t fail! It’s a story worth telling so that you will remember also.

And Jesus said “Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Luke 6:30-31

“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son.” 1 John 4:9-10

That Green-Eyed Monster Called Jealousy

How often do you feel that green-eyed monster of jealousy creeping into your day? It’s so easy to get lost in thoughts that can make our jealousy dangerous. So what does it mean to be jealous? I went to the online dictionary* for the answer.

“Jealousy… denotes a feeling of resentment that another has gained something that one more rightfully deserves…. Jealousy also refers to anguish caused by fear of unfaithfulness.”

Let’s look at an example of jealousy in the Bible from 1 Samuel 18. At this time, Saul is still king over Israel even though God has told him through Samuel that God had rejected him as king because Saul was disobedient to Him. Now, it came about that young David killed the Philistine giant and was successful in the battles Saul sent him to. After one particular battle, the women were singing joyfully while they met up with Saul. They sang, “Saul has slayed his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” (1 Sam 18:7b) This made Saul very angry and it “galled” him. “They have credited David with tens of thousands,” he thought, “but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?” [9] And from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David.” 1
Sam 18:8b-9

Saul was jealous of David because he saw that the people favored David and he thought that David would take the kingdom from him. The only thing is, the kingdom was no longer his because God had already taken it from him (1 Sam 15:23). His jealousy started in his mind with a thought that eventually led him to fits of anger where he tried multiple times to kill David. But David was anointed by God, and God wasn’t going to let His anointed be harmed.

So what do we learn from Saul’s jealousy? He was trying to hold on to something that was no longer his. Are you afraid that something or someone is
going to be taken from you? Have you considered if it was really yours to begin with? Everything we have is a gift from God. If we understand that we are only stewards of what God has given to us, then we don’t have to be afraid that someone will take it away. God won’t let anyone or anything be taken from us before it’s time. Only God can take it away. We need to be thankful for the things that God has given to us, but not hang on so tightly that we can’t let go when it’s God’s time to give it up. It’s only when we let go of that person or that thing that’s not really ours anyway, that our hands are free to take hold of what God has been waiting to give us all along.

Now there’s another example of jealousy in the Bible that we can’t overlook, and that’s the jealousy of God. Why would God be jealous? Well, God’s jealousy is different than man’s jealousy. God is not jealous of you or anyone else, He’s jealous for you. You can see that from this verse in Exodus 34:14

“[14] Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.”

God is only jealous when we put other people or things ahead of Him. He doesn’t want His people to bow down to false gods. He is the only true God who is worthy of our worship. Of course, God wants us to love others, but He deserves to be our first love. Do you find that you love your spouse or your children more than you love God? Then they are an idol, and God is jealous for you. Turn your eyes to Jesus and focus on the one and only God that is worthy of your worship. Have a godly jealousy for God and your time with Him, and you will find that green-eyed monster of man’s jealousy is no longer raising its ugly head.

STEALER OF PEACE!

I was talking to Vanessa and she made the statement that all Satan wants to do is steal our peace. The episode we were talking about was a small argument that my husband and I had Friday night. As most arguments go, this argument was about nothing, but, we allowed the argument to happen.

Friday night was a long night and neither one of us slept very well because we both allowed Satan to steal our peace. I should have recognized this incident for what it was. I should have seen it coming, acknowledged it and then dismissed it as Satan's way of causing a rift. But, I didn't, I got defensive and made the argument worse.

Jesus tells us in John 8:44 that there is no truth in Satan and that he is the father of lies and again He tells us in John 10:10 “ The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” The peace that you and I have comes from the Holy Spirit that is living within us, but when we allow ourselves to be manipulated we allow Satan who is the master manipulator to steal that peace from us. When I think of that word “manipulate” that immediately conjures up images of a puppet on a string. A puppet on a string can not act on its own, it moves at the whim of the puppeteer.

Because we have the Holy Spirit in us, we have the power through the Holy Spirit to tell Satan to take a hike. Satan is powerful, but not as powerful as the one living in us. As Christians we have the power to say to Satan "the Lord rebuke you!" As Christians we must always be alert to the subtle ways that he tries to manipulate us and tries to steal our peace. We must become proactive where Satan is concerned! We must always be on the lookout for his attacks and we must recognize those attacks for what they are...simply to steal our peace and to cause us to lose focus (even for a second) on Jesus Christ.

So, how did our little spat turn out? Well, I'm glad you asked! Fortunately, we both recognized the argument for what it was. Nothing! It was a waste of our time and a waste of a good nights' sleep. But, I did learn a lesson from this episode. I learned that Satan never gives up! Even when the lights are about to be turned off for the night, he's there and he's just waiting for an opportunity to steal, kill and destroy.

As Christians, we can’t let down our guard for an instant and we must learn from each other the tactics that Satan uses. He tries to tear husbands’ and wives’ apart through small, insignificant, stupid arguments. We can’t listen to his lies! We must learn to rely on the Holy Spirit who will help us to recognize the way Satan attacks us individually and as families. When we are defensive and see the attacks for what they are, we must then rely on the Holy Spirit’s power, the power that is within us, to rebuke Satan in the Lord’s name. Satan knows his time is running out and as much as he hates us, he hates Jesus even more! He knows that the cross defeated him and all he can do is make life miserable for us by stealing our peace, the peace that only comes from Jesus Christ.

I’m tired of being a puppet....how about you?

Becoming a More Confident Pray-er

Do you want to become a more confident pray-er? Praying is nothing more than talking to God, so why would I need to become more confident at praying anyway? If you’re like many people, communicating with God doesn’t always seem so easy, especially when you’re new to prayer. Praying alone is one thing, but do you feel equipped to pray in front of other people?

Have no fear! Because once you become more comfortable talking with God when you’re alone with Him, then it will be much easier to pray in front of other people. Here are a few tips that have helped me on my journey to becoming a more confident pray-er:

First, show God that you want a relationship with Him where you can talk to Him and hear from Him by accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior. "The Lord is far from the wicked, but He hears the prayer of the righteous." Proverbs 15:29. We are only made righteous through belief in Jesus Christ. (Rom 3:22) See our blog titled "New Life In Christ" from April 2nd, 2010 to understand how to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

If you want to learn how to pray, it helps to be around Spirit-filled "pray-ers". Just like children learn how to read by hearing others read to them, we can follow the example of those who are Spirit-filled prayer warriors. The other day, I was at a prayer meeting and I realized just how much I learn by listening to those who were there praying. I was reminded to expand my prayers to those outside of just my church family and even my community as we prayed for Christians around the world. So find a prayer meeting at your church and bask in the peace that comes from praying with others in unity.

God speaks your language, so you don’t need to speak in Old English or with many words. It’s good to have a reverence for God, but you don’t have to include "Thee" and "Thou" in your conversations with Him. God’s Word tells us not to talk just to talk (Matt 6:7). Instead, talk to God like He’s your friend, because He is.

Pray the word. Find promises in God’s Word and pray them for yourself and for others. There is power in praying God’s promises back to Him. Also, God’s Word will not return empty, but will accomplish His purpose. Is 55:10-11 – "[10]　As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, [11]　so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it." The more of the Word that you know, the easier it is to hear the Holy Spirit’s guidance in prayer as He brings Scriptures back to your mind.

Don’t fear what other people think. You don’t have to be perfect when you pray. Give yourself a break! Let those around you know that you’re working on praying out loud. And acknowledge that some people have a way with words, and God doesn’t expect you to be like them. Rely on the Holy Spirit to guide you in your prayers. He knows what you need to pray about. And it’s ok if you need to pause in your prayers and take a second to collect your thoughts. Prayers can make you feel vulnerable to those you are praying with, but know that God is looking at your heart, and your prayers are not about what other people think. Prayers are about repenting from your sins so that God will hear you, praising God for who He is and what He’s going to do in your life and in the lives of those you’re praying for, thanking God for what He’s already done, and asking God for those things you and others need.

Pray without ceasing. This means living a life of prayer, where God is at the forefront of your mind all day long. It’s putting Him first when you wake up, putting Him last when your head hits your pillow, and remembering Him throughout your day as you seek His guidance in the way of life.

Listen for God to speak to you. Prayer is communication. If you only talked to those you have a relationship with, but never listened to them in return, you wouldn’t have a very good relationship. God wants a personal relationship with you, and that means listening to the Holy Spirit throughout the day – it’s not just telling God what you need all the time. Listening to God becomes easier with obedience. When you know you’ve heard God and you are obedient to do what He’s told you, it’s easier to hear Him when He speaks to you the next time. Much of the time, God speaks in a still, small voice. As much as we’d like for God to hit us over the head with what He wants us to do, it takes time and attention towards Him to really begin to hear from Him.

This is not a complete list, but I hope you find these tips useful while you learn to communicate with God in a way that helps you as you become a more confident pray-er!

Dear Heavenly Father,
I praise You for being a God of grace. You don’t condemn us for our prayers that don’t seem to measure up in the eyes of man, but You give us grace as we learn to walk and talk with You. I ask that You would give me the determination and boldness to speak out prayers, knowing that the Holy Spirit is guiding me. Help me to put you at the forefront of my mind so that I can seek Your guidance throughout the day. And help me to listen to what You have to say to me every day. I want a close, personal relationship with You, and I am so thankful that You hear my prayers. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

JUMPING FOR JOY!

We’ve all heard the term before. There have been times in my life that I have been happy and excited about something, but I don’t think that I have ever been so excited that I have jumped for joy. How about you? We all understand the excitement that this term conveys, but I’m not sure if I have ever been excited to that point.

I just finished reading a book* written by a preacher, this book is about his three year old son who “died” on the operating table while undergoing emergency surgery for a burst appendix. The parents were told by their small town doctor that the child was only suffering from flu symptoms. Only after the poison of the burst appendix seeped into the boys’ body and only when he was at death’s door was the correct diagnosis made. For several years after the surgery, the boy began to reveal things about the time that he died, went to heaven and returned.

Even though all of the accounts of heaven that the boy revealed to his father are backed up by scripture, there is a tendency to doubt. Why? Possibly, because it has never happened to us or maybe because science says people don’t die and come back? But, I didn’t dwell on whether this actually happened. What caught my attention is that the boy spoke about heaven with a child’s innocence. The one account that got me to thinking was when the boy told his father that Jesus was so excited when the father was obedient and said yes when Jesus asked him to become a preacher for Him.

It’s been several days since I have read the book, but the one thing that I keep thinking about and dwelling on is that Jesus was so excited when the father was obedient and said yes to what Jesus was asking him to do. That tells me that we do have a choice to be obedient and when we are obedient, Jesus is excited!

Over breakfast one morning, I was telling my husband about this book and I asked him “if we knew that Jesus was excited about our choice to be obedient, wouldn’t we want to make sure that we are always obedient?” He said “yes, but if we knew, that would take away the faith factor.” My response was “who needs faith? If it makes Jesus happy, why wouldn’t we always want to be obedient, why do we need faith if we know that it makes Jesus happy? Who knows, maybe, Jesus even jumps for joy!”

And Jesus said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Matt 18:3-4 (NIV)

The above verse is usually interpreted as giving up our pride and accepting through faith that Jesus Christ did die for us. Since reading this book, I’ve been trying to see Jesus and God through a child’s eyes. God is my Father and just like any parent He wants me to approach Him as a child, His child. Jeremiah 29:12 tells us that when we pray to God that He will listen to us. What parent does not want their child to talk to them and what parent does not listen to their children? We can tell Him our problems but Matthew 6:8 tells us that He already knows our problems even before we ask. We can ask for material things, but Luke 11:11-13 tells us that like any father, God already knows our needs and He will always take care of them. Since we are assured that our problems and our needs will be taken care of, the only thing left for us to do is to seek a personal relationship by crawling up onto the lap of God and having a conversation with Him. The only way to do that is to become like a child seeking the comfort of a parent. When was the last time that you actually sought out God just to have a conversation with Him?

This week, I challenge you to seek God and His precious Son Jesus, not through the knowledge of an adult, but with the innocence of a child. I challenge you to be observant with childlike wonder at the many blessings in your life and in the surrounding creation that God has so graciously given to you to enjoy. I challenge you to be obedient and say yes to whatever it is that Jesus is asking you to do....I challenge you to make Jesus jump for joy!

Is That All There Is?

As I sit at home during my kid’s Spring Break and my vacation from work, it made me wonder about what so many people think is the purpose of life. Is life meant for “working for the weekend”? Do I work hard so that I can take a vacation, so that I can work hard, so that I can take the next vacation? Am I working toward retirement, so I can stop working and do whatever I want? And then what’s next…I die? Is that all there is to life? Well, I used to think this way! I was always working for the next vacation! Thinking this way is enough to make anyone depressed! God has so much more in store for us!

Can you imagine fulfilling God’s purpose through your life? God’s purpose is not for us to work in order to play for a few days, so that we can work in order to play for a few more days. His purpose is also not that we will satisfy our own desires. But His purpose is for man to work and to rest. God tells us in Genesis 2:15,

“The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” (emphasis mine)

God does have a plan for each of us, and His plan is for us to work! Now I believe that God’s plan for us is something that we’ll enjoy, but that doesn’t mean it will be easy. Work is work! But it will be a job that you will find satisfaction in. When the day is done, you know you’re doing what God has called you to do, and there’s satisfaction in that. Are you working in a job that you hate? Maybe you should spend some time asking God what He desires for you to do. What is the desire of His heart for you?

God’s purpose for you is not only that you work doing what He has designed you for, but also that you take time to rest. In the Old Testament (Exodus 31:12-17), God made a covenant with Israel that they should observe the Sabbath. The Sabbath was the first day of the week and it was a time for the Israelites to rest from their work, but it was also a time to draw closer to God. That’s the same opportunity we have when we take a break – whether the break is a 5 minute break or a 5 day vacation. We can plan time during our time off to draw closer to God so that we can know Him more.

In Mark 2:27-28, Jesus tells us, “…The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

The day of rest was made for man, man wasn’t made for the day of rest. How was it made for man? It was made for man to draw closer to God. It wasn’t meant as a day to satisfy our own desires. Isn’t that what we tend to do on our days off? Our distorted view of “rest” is to run around from 8am until midnight until we’re totally exhausted! Have you ever gone on a vacation and needed a day of vacation afterwards just to recuperate? That’s not rest! The Sabbath is more than just rest – it is resting in the arms of a God who loves you and wants to reveal Himself to you. It’s very beneficial for us to take time to rest. We know our bodies need rest from physical labor, and our minds need rest from the stresses of the day. Perhaps we can rest best when we are connecting with God. Jesus said He is the Lord of the Sabbath, and He will give you rest. He also says,

“[28]Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. [29]Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matt 11:28-29

Now that’s a purpose and a promise that I can live with!

Dear Heavenly Father,
You have a purpose for me through my work and my rest. I ask that You would make known to me what work You would have me do that would glorify You the most. And when I’m resting from my work, I ask that You would show Yourself to me in a special way as I draw closer to You. Thank You, Lord, that You give rest for weary souls. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

DESTINATION: HELL

Recently, my husband and I were watching a movie and the main characters who were age twenty something were in a helicopter that was about to crash. One of the characters said “Oh God, I’ve been good!” Immediately, I thought “sorry, wrong answer!” Actually, this is the 2nd movie in the same amount of months that I’ve seen where the main character thought that living a good life would get him or her to heaven.

The Bible clearly states: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.” John 3:16-18.

Churches today don’t preach about hell as a literal place. When a person dies, their body is buried, but their soul immediately goes to heaven or to hell. I read a book* many years ago that drove this fact home to me and it literally scared me to the point that I did not want to see anyone die unsaved. In this book when a saved person died, a band of angels immediately came to that soul and escorted it into the presence of Jesus Christ. The person that had not accepted Christ as his or her Savior was rudely greeted by a screaming horde of demons that came and snatched the soul straight into hell. In both cases, the soul never lost consciousness and knew exactly what was going on. The soul going to heaven to meet Jesus was totally at peace and the soul being dragged to hell was terrified!

When I was growing up, it was not uncommon to hear a sermon about hell as an eternal physical, place of torment. When I got back into church in early 2000, I asked the pastor of the church we were attending why he didn’t preach about hell. He stated to me “because, I don’t want to scare people into being saved.” At the time, I thought that was a good idea, but now, I am thinking “why not?” Wouldn’t it be better to hear a sermon now than to stand before God on judgment day and hear him say “...'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’” Matt 7:23.

Many people today also believe that when you die, you die. That’s it, zip, nada, nothing! The Bible clearly states that the spirit never dies (Matthew 10:28, Luke 12:5) and because it never dies, it never loses consciousness. When a Christian dies, the body dies and turns back to dust, but, the spirit immediately goes into heaven to be with Christ. Then when Christ returns at the Rapture, that body will be resurrected and reunited with the spirit. When a person dies without Christ, his or her body is buried and turns to dust, but the spirit is alive. It is conscious and it is aware of the torment of hell. The unsaved person will be reunited with his or her body at the Great White Throne of Judgment where he or she will answer to God and receive their final, eternal judgment. “Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” Rev 20:11-15 (NIV)

If you are reading this and you haven’t accepted Christ as your Savior, I urge you to read our blog titled New Life in Christ, dated April 2, 2010. Hell was not created for humans (Matthew 25:41). All of us have a choice. To accept Christ and His sacrifice for us on the cross....or accept the consequences. "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.’” Matt 25:41.

I don’t write this to scare anyone. I write this for the Christian to wake up and realize that time is short and that there is much work to do. I write this for the unsaved person to wake up and realize that life is short and the choice you make today has an eternal consequence.

Since our souls are immortal, we will never die and we will spend eternity somewhere. You and you alone, control your own destination.

A Lifetime of Learning

In one of my summers during college, I took a history class while I also worked. I remember when I was finished with the class thinking, “How does anyone ever have a full-time job and learn in college courses at the same time? It’s just so hard!” Then when I finished college, I thought, “I’m so glad I’m finished learning stuff. I don’t ever want to go through that again!” Then I remember the epiphany I had later on in life when I realized that I will never stop learning. What I’ve come to realize now is that when you stop learning, you stop living. I know that as long as I’m in God’s Word every day, I’ll continue to live and learn…or maybe that should be, learn and live!

If we look at some instructions that the king of Israel was to follow in order to have a long reign over his kingdom, I think we’ll find some insight into learning for life.

“When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the priests, who are Levites.[19] It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the LORD his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees [20] and not consider himself better than his brothers and turn from the law to the right or to the left. Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Isreal.” Deut 17:18-20

Notice that the king is supposed to write “for himself” a copy of the law, taken from a scroll of the priests. Can you imagine how much more thoroughly you would learn God’s Word if you wrote down each word? This is motivating me to
start writing out God’s word so I can meditate on it in a new way. Sometimes when we read the Bible we gloss over so much! Writing out God’s Word makes you think about it. There’s something about seeing the words written and writing them out yourself that helps make a connection to the words you’re looking at.

Then notice that the king’s copy of the law was supposed to be “with him”. In this day, it’s so easy to carry God’s Word with you. I used to keep my extra Bible in my car, but now, I have copies of the Bible on my computer and even free copies on my smart phone! We can take God’s word with us where ever we go! If you have a laptop, an ipad, or a smart phone, you have no excuse not to have God’s Word available to you at just about all times.

Finally, the king was to read God’s Word “all the days of his life”. He was to do this so that he would revere God, follow His laws, and stay humble by not considering himself better than his brothers. If he did this, God promised that he and his descendants would reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel. As mentioned previously, we have instant access to God’s Word, allowing us to read it day and night, as commanded in the book of Joshua (Joshua 1:8). But it takes discipline, and dying to what you “feel like” doing at the moment instead of doing what you know will bring life in the long run.

Now, we may not be kings or queens, but we can apply these truths to our own lives. Not only can we write down God’s Word in order to remember it and meditate on it, but we can carry His Word with us anywhere we go. And we can read in God’s Word all the days of our lives. When we do these things our family and friends will see our commitment and our love for God and decide they want what we have. They will desire to reign with Christ in His heavenly kingdom as we are doing right here on earth! They’ll see us learning and living.

So remember, as you continue to stay in God’s Word and understand more and more who He is, pass on what you’ve learned to others. Learning is contagious when you’re excited about it! We all need to learn new things to keep on living a vibrant and long life in Christ! With God and His endless personality, we will never run out of things to learn about Him through His Word.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Your Word is life to me. I ask that You would continue to increase my desire to be in Your Word more and more. I want to know You better as I am in Your Word. Help me to learn to meditate on Your Word for myself and not to rely on others to feed me spiritually. As I read and learn through Your Word, I ask that You would show me how to live it out each day. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen.

THE RACE IS ON!

My mom used to tell me when I was growing up, that when you lose someone close to you heaven becomes just that much more real to you. Fortunately, the Lord has not yet called anyone home that is really close to me, but I have lost aunts/uncles and cousins that I know were saved. Because I know that they are in heaven then yes, heaven does seem a little closer to me now than it did when I was a child.

I’ve often wondered over the years whether our loved ones actually know what we are doing here on earth. I especially like the way The Message interprets Hebrews chapter 12 verses 1 and 2 “Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we'd better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. 2 Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we're in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: cross, shame, whatever. And now he's there, in the place of honor, right alongside God.” Now that makes me nervous, when it is put this way that "pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on?” That makes me feel very inadequate. Honestly, the way you and I should look at this is that we have our own trails to blaze. We have that same Spirit living within us that these pioneers had. We have the Holy Spirit living within us and He gives us the strength to blaze our own trails for our Christian faith! They are watching us and they are cheering us on! Now how intimidating can that be? But, we can’t think of it as intimidating because they are cheering us on, they are on our side and we must run our own race by keeping our eyes focused on Jesus Christ! He is the perfector of our faith! He is the one who began and finished the race that you and I are now in.

Our opponent in this race is not flesh and blood! Satan is alive and well and the race we are running is for the souls of the lost people in this world. We are not running this race for our own glory, we are running for the glory and honor of Jesus. The pioneers that have gone before us understand that and that is why they are cheering us on. Verse 1 continues “....Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins.” How can we run a race when we are carrying spiritual fat and parasitic sins? We need to shed the excess spiritual fat that we’ve been carrying around for years by reading and studying the Word and not by relying on things that we have heard. We must be Bereans (those who searched the word for themselves to see if what Paul said to them was the truth - Acts 17:11) where the Word of God is concerned. We need to let go of our parasitic sins, the sins that we are aware of, sins that we continue to allow to hang on are parasitic and they feed off of us. These are sins that we know are there and they don’t surprise us when they show up.

Don’t you think that it is time that we get in the race? You have paths to blaze for Jesus! You know what you are called to do and you know that God has equipped you for this job! You know that you are being cheered on toward the finish line and you know that when the race is finally won that you will be rewarded for a job well done! We can each throw off our parasitic sins (if we want to) by reading and studying the Word, by turning to our fellow Christians and allowing them to help us overcome these sins that are sucking us dry. It’s time to shed the excess and it is now time for us to run full speed ahead! We can’t lose, Jesus is on our side and all of those who went on before us are cheering us to victory!

Father God,
We need your help Lord! Jesus is the perfector of our faith and He taught us how to run our race and overcome the world. By studying how He ran the race, we can stay focused on the finish line. Help us Lord to throw off our spiritual excess and parasitic sins that are holding us back from realizing our full potential in Christ. I pray Lord that you put a hunger and burning desire into everyone reading this to study Your Word and to connect with a church where their brothers and sisters in Christ can help them reach their full potential. Your children need to realize that we are not racing against flesh and blood and that the race we are in has eternal consequences.

Peace Like A River

I grew up camping on the river every summer. One of my favorite memories is floating on the river in the calmness of the day as the sun beat down, warming not only my body but my attitude as well. With my eyes closed, I could hear the sound of nature—birds chirping, water flowing, and trees moving in the breeze. There’s just something about it that gives you a peace like you’ve never known.

God tells us that we can have peace, if we listen, learn, and then do.

“…I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your righteousness like the waves of the sea.” Isaiah 48:17-18

God teaches us in different ways. We are all individuals, and He knows exactly what it’s going to take to get us to learn. Sometimes our hearts are ready to receive His instruction and guidance or even His discipline, and all He has to do is nudge us. Sometimes we’re a little more hard-headed and He’s got to bring learning through trials or affliction. But either way, it is always for our best interest. God knows what is best for you. When you’re in a trial that’s been going on for a long time, have you ever asked God what it is that He’s trying to teach you through that trial? Maybe He’s just waiting for you to “get it”. Many times, our trials stick around because of the attitude of our hearts, not because of what someone else is doing. Remember, God knows what’s best for you.

God directs you in the way you should go. When you’re on a river, you can try paddling upstream, but you will only wear yourself out. Have you been paddling upstream with God? Is God asking you to do something or go somewhere, and you keep telling Him, “No”? You won’t have peace when you’re paddling upstream against God.

When you’re on a river, it will guide you where you go. Ask God for guidance and go where the Spirit leads. A river can be very still, but it can also have raging rapids, where you must hold on for your life! But even through those rapids, you can have peace knowing that God will take you through, just as you can have peace in the rapids of your own life because God is your source.

In order to truly have peace, you must be obedient to God. He says in the scripture above, “If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river…” Paying attention to God’s commands means being obedient! If God tells you to lean left or paddle to the right, you’d better do it, or you may come upon a very big rock in your path. You see, God knows what’s up ahead even when you don’t. Your eyes are down at water level and you see only what is right before you, but God sees the big picture. He knows where there are rocks, rapids and even water falls. When we listen to Him, He tells us what to avoid, and we have peace knowing that He is in control of our lives.

Jesus tells us in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

It’s very easy to see rapids ahead and to be afraid. But when you have the peace of Jesus, it’s like you just know that all will be well, that He will take care of you. That doesn’t mean that everything will always be easy. But you can have the peace of Jesus, knowing that you don’t have to be afraid, because He is with you, and He loves you! What more do we need to have peace in our lives?—Only Jesus!

A CAUSE WORTH DYING FOR!

Everyone remembers the story of Daniel and the Lion’s den. In Daniel chapter 6 verse 3 we read how much the king favored Daniel “Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.” Well, you can imagine that the news of this went over like a lead balloon because the very next verse tells us “at this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.”

We’ve all worked with people like the administrators and satraps, haven’t we? Or maybe, if you’ve been lucky enough not to have to work with someone like this, chances are that you’ve known someone like this. These people first went after Daniel by looking at his work, nitpicking it and turning over every page, reading every memo that Daniel sent out, just trying to find something that they could take to King Darius to use against Daniel and to try and get him fired. In verse 5 we are told “Finally these men said, "We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God." If you are a Christian that is what the lost people in the world are doing to you. The world is very good about watching our every move so that when we stumble they can point at us and make themselves feel better about how they are living their own lives.

The administrators and satraps huddled together to devise a plan to be able to charge Daniel with something so that they could get him out of their hair once and for all. So they decided to play up to the king’s pride. In verse 6 we read “So the administrators and the satraps went as a group to the king and said: "O King Darius, live forever! 7 The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or man during the next thirty days, except to you, O king, shall be thrown into the lions' den. 8 Now, O king, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered--in accordance with the laws of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed." 9 So King Darius put the decree in writing.”

The decree was issued and for the next 30 days anyone caught praying to any god or man other than the king would be thrown into the lion’s den. Well, Daniel ignored this decree and went right on praying to God. Daniel was ignoring the king’s decree and doing what he knew he was supposed to do and that was to follow what God told him to do. Well you know the rest of the story. Daniel was placed in the lion’s den, but the Lord sent an angel to shut the mouth of the lions. The king realized that those that came up with the decree were jealous of Daniel and he also knew that he had done wrong by listening to them and by issuing the decree. When he realized that Daniel’s God had saved him, the king then had the men that accused Daniel thrown into the lions den along with their wives and children. Before they even hit the floor of the lions den they were devoured.

What lessons can we learn from this story? We learn that lost people watch us closely. They watch to see how we conduct business and how we live our lives. We also learn that when we are diligent and continually walk in the way of the Lord, our God does reward us for our faithful service to Him. In Daniel’s case he was first rewarded through his job and then he was saved from a horrible death. In verse 10 we read “now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.” Even though the decree was issued that anyone breaking the order would be thrown in the lion’s den, Daniel didn’t hesitate to pray to God. Daniel knew that being obedient to God was a cause that was worth dying for.

With the way the world is going these days, it’s not a stretch of the imagination to see the events unfolding from the book of Revelations. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that one of these days all Christians will be under severe attack. We will each have to take a stand and decide if being obedient to Christ is a cause that is worth dying for.

Hot or Cold, or Somewhere In Between?

[14] “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation. [15] I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! [16] So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. [17] You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. [18] I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
[19] Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. [20] Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.
[21] To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne. [22] He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” Rev 3:14-22

Jesus, who is the faithful and true witness, who sees all we do, chastised the church in Laodicea by showing how the world around them was moving them into a lukewarm, or indifferent state in their works for God. Laodicea was known for its lukewarm water that was piped in by aqueduct from the Hot Springs of Hierapolis and cold water from Colossae. By the time the water reached Laodicea, it was lukewarm and nasty! Laodicea was a very wealthy community. They were well known for garments made of black wool and for medicinal eye salve that came from their university. With this in mind, you can see how Jesus used their worldly situation to challenge them to change from their “lukewarmness”.

There are good uses for hot water and for cold water, but they were neither hot nor cold. Their lukewarmness, or indifference, was so detestable to Jesus that He was ready to vomit them out of His mouth, like someone who drank of the detestable, lukewarm water of Laodicea would spit it out of his mouth. They thought they were rich because they had all that they needed. They thought how wealthy they were with their black wool garments, but spiritually, they were poor and naked. They needed to put on Jesus’ white garment of righteousness. With their university, they thought they had much knowledge, but they were blind and needed spiritual salve for their eyes so they could be opened up to see their spiritual state. Does this sound familiar? As a nation, Americans have been richly blessed. But so many people don’t think they need God because they think they can do everything on their own. With all of our knowledge and technology, we Americans think we are so smart, but are we really just being lukewarm?

Jesus challenged the Laodicean church to buy gold from Him that was refined by fire. Perhaps He was referring to 1 Cor. 3:12-15 which says,

“[12] If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, [13] his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. [14] If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. [15] If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames. “

Are your works building on the foundation of Jesus Christ? Will they stand the test of fire? Or do you think you have everything you need without God's help? How much do you really rely on Him? Are you too prideful to be corrected by Jesus? Don’t be, instead, repent and turn from your ways. He only corrects and disciplines those He loves. Jesus is telling His followers that He’s knocking at the door of your heart. Will you open the door and let Him come in? He is a gentleman, and won’t force His way in, but only comes in by invitation. When is the last time you invited Jesus into your heart and into every area of your life? This is something we can do daily, not just when we first believe in Him.

To those who overcome this indifference and apathy, this lukewarmness, Jesus says that you will have the right to share His throne with Him. I don’t know how this will happen, but it reminds me of a child sitting on his daddy’s lap. You can’t help but be close when you’re sitting together, and Jesus is offering that kind of closeness with Him when you overcome the sin of indifference. Let's ask God to help us overcome being lukewarm.

Dear Heavenly Father,
I pray that you will show me anywhere that I am being indifferent, lukewarm or apathetic in my service to You. I open up all aspects of my life to You and invite You in. I ask that You anoint my eyes with spiritual salve so I may see. I also ask that You would help me to walk clothed in Your righteousness. Thank You, Jesus. It's in Your precious name I pray. Amen.

BUILD UP OR TEAR DOWN?

During the exodus while the Israelites were wandering around in the desert we read in chapter 17 how the Amalekites came and attacked them. Moses told Joshua to choose some of the Israelite men to go and fight the Amalekites. He told Joshua that he, Aaron and Hur would go to the top of a hill to watch the battle and that he would take with him the staff of God. Early the next day, Joshua went to battle the Amalekites and Moses took the staff of God to the top of the hill where he could watch the battle, Joshua and the Israelites could look up at any time to see Moses appealing to God for an Israelite victory by holding up his hands toward heaven. “As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up--one on one side, one on the other--so that his hands remained steady till sunset.” Ex 17:11-12

When Moses’ hands got tired and he started to lower them, the Amalekites would begin to win the battle, but as long as Moses kept his hands raised up toward heaven, the Israelites were winning. The battle began early that morning and it was obvious that the battle would continue all day. There was no way that Moses could stand there all day and keep his hands raised toward heaven without help. So, his Israelite brothers, Aaron and Hur came to his rescue. They found a stone for Moses to sit on and Aaron stood on one side of Moses while Hur stood on the other side and they each took one of Moses’ hands and held them up to heaven until sunset. Aaron and Hur recognized that Moses was struggling to keep his hands raised and they also realized that in order for the Israelites to prevail, the three of them had to work together in unison.

That brings me around to the build up portion of the title. We, you and I must work together in unison to build up the body of Christ. As Christians, we have one goal, we have the same goal and we will never reach that goal unless we work together as one body with one mind. What is our goal? Our goal is to reach the lost people in our communities. Our goal is to nurture and mature the newest Christians in our churches by giving them the tools and support that they need to grow in Christ. Our goal is to help each other overcome the obstacles that Satan throws in our individual paths and the way we do that is through fellowship and prayer. Our churches depend on each of us to step up and do whatever is necessary to stay Christ focused.

Well now, what about the tear down part of the title? Unfortunately, that also happens in our churches. Even though Christians are sons and daughters in God’s family, we don’t always act like family. “So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.” Gal 4:7. Just as a regular family has different personalities, the church is also made up of many people with different personalities and sometimes, these personalities clash. But, what we have to remember is that the lost people in the world are watching us and when they see us stumble because we can’t get along with each other, the world immediately says “what hypocrites, why should I bother going to church?” Recently, I heard this exact reaction to an incident that occurred in a “high profile” church and it broke my heart. This incident not only affected the testimony of a “high profile” person within the church, but it also spilled over giving a Christian school the same hypocritical reputation. Make no mistake, the lost people in the world constantly watch us and are happy to use us as an excuse for them to stay away from church.

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.” 1 John 4:7. If you have been born of God and know God....you always have a decision to make.....build up or tear down?

Faithful Friends

[7] “To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write:
These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. [8] I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. [9] I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you. [10] Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth.
[11] I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown. [12] Him who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will he leave it. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on him my new name. Those in the church in Philadelphia were faithful friends to Jesus—they persevered in their faith. Jesus didn’t have anything against this church, He just wanted them to continue on with what they were doing and not let anyone steal from them what they had. We know Philadelphia as the city of “brotherly love”, and that love is just what this church had for Jesus, and He had for them. At first, it may not seem loving that Jesus tells them they had “little strength”, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If we look at ourselves, don’t we all have little strength compared to God? Having little strength helps us depend on God. When we recognize that we have little strength, and all our power comes from God, it shows humility. So, where does your strength come from—within yourself, or from God?

Jesus knows your works, and He is the only one who will open and shut doors for you. Have you had a door that recently opened or shut in your circumstances? When Jesus opens the door, you better walk through quickly, maybe even run! And when Jesus closes the door on a situation, don’t bother trying to open the door on your own, because it isn’t going to happen. You have little strength, remember? Or it could be that you have been waiting on God in a certain situation. Have you asked Him to open or close a door for you? Maybe He’s just waiting for you to ask…

Jesus commended the church for keeping His word. The Greek word for “keeping” actually means to keep an eye on or watch like a warden or guard. Are you guarding God’s word so much that nothing escapes your notice, like a warden watching the inmates? When’s the last time you opened your Bible? You can’t guard it when you’re not in it. He also commended the church for not denying His name. Can we confess to being a Christian and still deny Jesus’ name? What about when we hide the fact that we’re a Christian? Do your friends, family and co-workers know that you believe in Christ, or are you a closet Christian? Be aware that looks are deceiving now just as they were back then. Just because someone wears a cross doesn’t make them a Christian. Not everyone who wears a cross knows the meaning behind it. Just as going to church doesn’t make you a Christian nor does having parents that are Christians make you a Christian. You must, at some point, make a decision for yourself, knowing that you are a sinner who needs a Savior. You need to believe, for yourself, that Jesus took your sins upon Himself on the cross and that He rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of God. Once you understand that free gift of saving grace, then you can also ask Jesus to be the Lord of your life, so that you can become more and more like Him for as long as you live. There were plenty of people around the church in Philadelphia who lied about who they were and whose they were. The reality is, those who don’t know Jesus belong to Satan. That’s a hard thing to say, but it needs to be said. You are in one camp or the other. You are either on Jesus’ side or Satan’s side. Do you know whose side are you on? God tells us that there is only one way to Him and that is through Jesus Christ. (Jn 14:6) Jesus doesn’t want anyone to belong to Satan, but He is not going to force Himself on you. He gives you the opportunity to choose Him of your own free will because of His love for you. Jesus loves us all, but to really know the love of Jesus, you must be His. That’s when you hear His voice and see Him at work in your life, and that’s when you come to understand His love for you more and more. When you start to have a personal relationship with Jesus, you start to understand just how much He loves you. Don’t you want to know the love of Jesus?

To those who continue as faithful friends to Jesus, you will have a place in God’s presence. Jesus will go so far as to mark you with the name of His God and His own new name. That’s just another way that Jesus shows His love for you—a love that lasts forever!

WHAT IS LOVE?

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” 1 Cor 13:4-7. Whether you are a Christian or not, most of us know the above verses, but how many of us remember this verse, “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13

Romans 5:8 tells us “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Even as a long-time Christian it is hard for me to wrap my mind around this. Why would God love sinners enough to step down from His throne in Heaven and die for us? What makes us so special? The answer to that question is nothing! We are not special and we certainly are not worth Jesus, the Prince of Heaven, becoming mortal and dying a cruel death on the cross for us.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.” John 3:16-18.

I know you are getting ready to celebrate Valentine’s Day. You’ve already got your flowers ordered, the card and gift bought and you’ve made reservations to that hard to get into restaurant. But as you think about this day of love, don’t think about it the way the world thinks about it. I know you love your spouse, your boyfriend or your girlfriend, but as you take time to think about love today....think about the sacrificial love that was made on your behalf over 2000 years ago. Take this day and think about what Christ’s sacrifice means to you and you alone.

One of these days, there will come a day of reckoning, a day of accountability, a day when each one of us will stand before the judgment throne of God. When God asks you what your definition of love is, what are you going to say? As much as I love my husband, my heart breaks because I will never understand the magnitude of real love...God’s love for me. I can not fathom the love that it took to allow His Son to bear all of my sins. Because of what Jesus did for us, God has said “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." Heb 8:12. When I stand before the judgment throne and God asks me what my definition of love is, all I will be able to do is point to Jesus Christ!

As you celebrate Valentine’s Day today think about the sacrifice that Christ made on your behalf all those years ago. Think about how much God loves you! No matter how hard we try, we will never fully understand the great depths of love that God has for us. Feebly, all we can do is point to Jesus and strive to let others see Christ’s love through us.

“He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; 14 for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.” Psalms 103:10-14 (NIV)

Church of the Dead

These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. [2] Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God. [3] Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. [4] Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. [5] He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels. [6] He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. Revelation 3:1-6

This church in the book of Revelation is one that looked alive, but was dead. The church was doing some sort of works, but something made their deeds dead. Could it have been that their motives were not right? Or maybe it was that they were doing their works in their own strength and not through the power of the Holy Spirit? If that’s the case, how much of our deeds within our own church are dead? What about our own service in the church? Are our works done in the power of the Holy Spirit? Are we doing the works that God has called us to do?

There was a time in my life when I wanted to leave my church. It was just where I was at that time in my walk with God, but God wouldn’t allow me to go. I soon came to realize that God had a purpose for me being at my church. I didn’t realize at the time that I would one day meet the two ladies that God has bound me to through A Cord of Three and LVC Ministries. Not only that, but I know God still has us at our church for a purpose, and He has you at your church for a purpose too. Maybe your church is like Sardis—it appears on the outside to be alive, but on the inside it’s dying. God has you there for a reason, and the reason is this…to strengthen what remains and is about to die. We always want an easy fix, and leaving a church is a lot easier than fixing it. But God is not allowing you to go until your work is complete. Maybe you are one of those in the church who has been dead and needs to wake up and repent! Or maybe you are one of the few who is wearing the white robe of righteousness. Either way, God is calling you to wake up and strengthen those parts of the church that are about to die. How can you do this? These verses tell us! First, look into your heart and see what God has been urging you to do in your church. Remember what you have received and heard from God and then do it! Be obedient! You don’t know when the Lord will return or how much time you have left. Second, repent from your sin! It’s time to “Wake up!” and come to life as the body of Christ! Just as the prophet Ezekiel in Ezekiel 37 prophesied to the breath that it would come into the dry bones so that they would live, God will raise up the dry bones in our dead churches and breathe life into them, making a vast army! Only, you haven’t seen it happen yet because He’s waiting for you to be obedient and do your part in the power of the Holy Spirit. It will all be worth it when one day, you hear Jesus acknowledge you before His Father and the angels. We who are His long to hear our Lord and Savior say, “Well done good and faithful servant!”

THE BATTLE BELONGS TO THE LORD!

For a time, the country of Israel was split into two kingdoms, the northern and southern kingdoms. The Southern Kingdom was made up of the tribes of Benjamin and Judah which was the lineage that Jesus came through. The Northern Kingdom was made up of the other ten tribes of Israel. The Northern Kingdom met its demise at the hands of the Assyrians.

After the Northern Kingdom fell, the king of Judah, Hezekiah invited all of Israel to come to Jerusalem and celebrate the Passover as one people, one united country. For the first time since Solomon, the entire nation observed Passover together. We read in 2 Chronicles 31:21 “In everything that he undertook in the service of God's temple and in obedience to the law and the commands, he sought his God and worked wholeheartedly. And so he prospered.”

One day, Sennacherib, the king of Assyria decided to invade Judah. Hezekiah took measures to keep Sennacherib out of Jerusalem by blocking the streams off so that the Assyrian army would not have water. He also took measures to fortify the city walls and he built up an arsenal of weapons. King Hezekiah then encouraged his people with these words: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him. 8 With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles." 2 Chron 32:7-8.

Sennacherib’s army stood outside the walls of Jerusalem, hurling insults against the people and their God saying "Just as the gods of the peoples of the other lands did not rescue their people from my hand, so the god of Hezekiah will not rescue his people from my hand." 2 Chron 32:17. Even though Hezekiah went on the offensive and took action to fortify his army and his city, he did not depend on his own efforts to save his kingdom. “King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz cried out in prayer to heaven about this. 21 And the LORD sent an angel, who annihilated all the fighting men and the leaders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he went into the temple of his god, some of his sons cut him down with the sword.” 2 Chron 32:20-21

Did you catch that? The city of Jerusalem was surrounded and any observer would think that Sennacherib would win this battle, but when King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah prayed, the Lord sent one angel to annihilate the Assyrian army - just one angel! To add insult to injury when Sennacherib limped home, he went into the temple of his god and some of his own sons cut him down with the sword.

The lesson that I get from King Hezekiah’s story and the lesson that I hope you get is that when you live a life that honors and glorifies God and you are obedient to God, nothing and I mean nothing can stand in the way of God’s plans being fulfilled in your life. I am not trying to trivialize your problems. I know many people have serious problems going on in their life with marriage, family, finances, just name it! King Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem were faced with being killed or taken into slavery. Although they were proactive and went on the offensive, they did not depend on themselves to solve their problems. They prayed and placed their trust in God. If God sent just one angel to destroy an army....what can He do for you? As a Christian, as a son or daughter of God, remember this “....with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles." 2 Chron 32:8b.
