We understand that our industry can be confusing sometimes, so we thought we would break it down in this post and explain exactly what laser cutting is.

Laser cutters are being used more and more in today’s work force, due to the expansion in technology. Because of the greater demand for products made with laser cutters, many businesses are replacing the way they manufacture parts away from traditional mechanical cutting methods to laser cutters. With its high powered laser beam and the expanding range of materials and thicknesses they can cut, the laser cutter has become the credited source for cutting metals. Now we understand that not everyone is an expert in laser cutters like us, so we thought we’d give you some of the laser cutting basics.

Basics

A laser cutter is simply an apparatus that uses a laser beam to cut through material. The laser beam is usually no more than 0.2 millimetres in width at the cutting surface and is powered by a few hundred to several thousand watts. The traditional CO2 laser consists of an arrangement of mirrors that direct the laser beam into the material being cut, whereas the fibre laser sends the beam down a fibre optic cable meaning that there is no need for mirrors.

Laser Cutting Materials

Lasers are typically made to cut through materials like carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium. Other metals like brass and copper are more difficult to cut through because of their ability to reflect light, as well as conducting heat away from the cut. Our new powerful 5KW fibre laser however, is able to cut through these materials due to its different wave lengths.

The Benefits

There are several benefits that come with using laser cutting rather than a mechanical cutting tool. Using a laser cutter gives a fine tolerance to the finished item that has been cut over the entire surface of the sheet. The beam of light from the laser does not wear out like a blade does so that the first profile cut will be the same size as the last. The laser does not have restrictions on contour shapes or sizes requiring different tools for different profiles like mechanical cutting, making it much more versatile and cost effective on smaller quantity runs. As our laser machines have flying optics, the work piece material does not need to be clamped and just sits still on the cutting bed with no physical contact to any cutting head. This means that smaller thinner sheets can be processed or existing profiles can easily be modified without having to remake them should a design have to be changed slightly.

Here at ADS Laser we specialise in laser cutting, folding, painting and fabrication in Nottingham and Leicester the surrounding areas. With our latest 5KW CO2 and fibre lasers we are able to give you the best quality service around. For more information call us today on: 0116 2444 999 or contact us here.

We are proud to be launching our new laser in January, so we've put together a news post detailing the benefits laser cutting has over other methods.

Material cutting is one of the most important steps in a manufacturing process. This step must be performed accurately and competently so that the subsequent steps of the manufacturing process can be carried out properly. Here at ADS Laser we use lasers to perform this task. Laser cutting machines are integrated with a computer controlled programme system which controls where and how the cut has to be made on the material. With the launch of our new 5KW fibre laser in January we thought we would tell you the advantages of cutting with lasers:

•	As the cut is made by the use of a laser beam, there is no direct contact with the work piece with any cutting instrument, thereby eliminating any risk of material contamination and surface marking and negating the need to deburr after.

•	Fibre laser cutting machines use less energy for cutting metal sheets compared to other laser cutting technology, making it more environmentally friendly.

•	Laser cutting is very versatile and can be used to cut or engrave simple to complex designs on a work piece.

•	The cuts obtained are extremely precise and the entire process of cutting the material is accomplished in less time that is required with conventional cutting machines.

•	This technology can be used to cut a number of materials like stainless steels, aluminium, brass copper and aeronautical materials like titanium.

•	The new laser system with its full automation loading and unloading sheets and profiles will create a more efficient process.

•	•	As the laser cutting machines are fully enclosed units fully guarded, they do not require as much human involvement, except for maintenance and repairs, the incidence of accidents and injuries is also reduced.

Here at ADS Laser we are experts in fabrication and laser cutting in Leicester and the surrounding areas. We aim for excellence with every job. With the latest technology and the arrival of our new 5KW fibre laser in January, we are able to give you precision engineering and to the highest standard. For more information about our services call us today on: 0116 2444 999 or contact us here.

This latest post explains how the process of laser cutting works and how our team here at ADS Laser can help with any project you are currently working on.

Something that rings true across many different industry sectors is the need to ensure you have the correct tools and equipment to carry out the job you are undertaking, if you don’t you won’t be able to provide the high quality service or products that you strive too. Laser cutting in Northampton is an innovative process whereby you can ensure that your high standards are met, and if you’re in the area then look no further than the team here at ADS Laser for all your needs! Of course to fully understand the huge benefits and advantages of using laser cutting you firstly need to know what it is, and how it works; continue reading as our team explain more.

The English language is a funny old thing, and undoubtedly you use words without even taking a moment to stop and think about what they truly mean or where they come from! The word laser is actually an acronym and stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, so now you have an understanding of the term itself let’s get down to the nitty gritty; how does laser cutting really work?

It all begins with a design, whether this is for a gate to finish off your garden at home or for a new piece of equipment to assist in the manufacturing side of your business, this design is generally created on a computer usually with a CAD program or something similar. Once this design has been loaded in a computer it can then be read by the machinery which will guide the laser to cut a physical copy of said design!

It’s a fairly simple process once you know how it’s done and it has a whole host of benefits for you including a higher quality finish because you won’t experience wear and tear on the laser as you would on other pieces of machinery used for this purpose ensuring consistency throughout the production from the first to the very last profile.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch with us here at ADS Laser today if you wish to find out any more about how laser cutting works and the many applications that it can be utilised for.

Well, firstly, here at ADS Laser we use a variety of technologies to get a precise finish. Compared to steel welding, aluminium welding is a difficult process and needs the right experts to do the job correctly. Fortunately we are a versatile company, and as well as completing aluminium welding, our welders can provide the same level of service for any size project with both stainless steel and mild steel.

With any metal fabrication and welding there are different techniques which must be used to give the most effective results. We have various production capabilities discussed within our website but to reiterate a few of these;

Guillotining up to 3 meters of length with accuracy of +/- 0.5mm on material up to 4mm thick

Raw material test and conformity certification

CNC folding of material lengths up to 3 metres to an accuracy of 0.5mm

Plasma cutting.

And many, many more.

Have a look at our gallery to see some examples of projects we have previously completed and these will allow you to see the quality of work we can produce. If you need any further information, here is a video which shows you the techniques that we use at ADS Laser to get the desired results.
