Lash Complete-Our new Lash growth accelerator. I have been using it for a week now and my upper lashes have grown longer already. I didn't use mascara yesterday but when I did my make-up this morning, I was astonished at the length of my upper lashes-almost unbelievable really.

I am using it on both my upper & lower lashes also on my patchy eyebrows. We had great news this week when Simon-owner of Belmont Hair clinic noticed the first hairs growing through his balding scalp after only 5 weeks of Laser Therapy treatment.

What is Botox®?
Botox® is a purified form of botulinum toxin which is a very effective muscle relaxant. A medical protein derived from the ‘C. Botulinum’ bacteria under laboratory confines.

How does Botox® treat lines/wrinkles?
Botox® stops nerve impulses to the facial muscles which create our expression lines. The muscles relax so that they do not contract and the overlying skin therefore remains smooth and unlined. Untreated facial muscles contract normally so only the treated muscles are affected.

Is it safe?

Are there any side effects?
Very rarely there may some minor bruising around the injection site. In very rare cases, toxin could migrate and this may cause short-lived weakness of other close muscles. This could cause a droopy eyelid, which the Doctor is usually able to reverse. Any side effects are temporary.

Is it painful?
You may be a minor sting for the first few moments at the injection. The needles our doctor uses are micro needles and once the injection is complete there should be no real discomfort.

How soon will I see the results?
You will normally see results within five to ten days, however, it could take up to two weeks for all the treated muscles to relax in some people. Everyone is different. 2 weeks after treatment, if there are a few lines visible, our Dr can carry out “top up” for you.

How long will the effects last for?

How Hair Grows?
Our DNA determines the number of hair follicles that we are born with, therefore it is impossible to increase the number of follicles on the scalp.

During the growth phase, rapid cell division takes place above the dermal papilla at the matrix. The authors wished to confirm the efficacy of low level laser therapy (LLLT) for the stimulation of hair growth and also to determine what effect LLLT had on the tensile strength of hair. Thirty-five patients, 28 males and 7 females, with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) underwent treatment for a six-month period. Both the hair counts and tensile strength of the hair were affected very beneficially in both sexes in the temporal and vertex regions, with the males and vertex areas showing the most improvement.

INTRODUCTION
ALTHOUGH LOW-LEVEL LASER THERAPY (LLLT), the therapeutic application of low-energy lasers to medicine, has been used for photobiostimulation for more than thirty years now, in the past it has primarily been used to accelerate the healing of burns or wounds, or alternatively, to ease or relieve pain. Furthermore, LLLT has gained credibility and common usage in some parts of the world, such as Japan, the Scandinavian countries, and Australia, while in other parts of the world, such as North America, a lack of recognition of its efficacy has remained.

Even though there are more than 2,500 papers related to LLLT in the scientific literature, (1) only one printed reference, Professor Pekka Pontinen’s text, was found which actually discussed the use of LLLT “to stimulate hair growth.”(2) Even in this source, the information was limited to one paragraph, which refers to one paper given in Sorrento in 1982 which reported increased hair growth after LLLT in animals, (3) and a foreign language publication in 1983 which reported favorable results with LLLT in the treatment of Alopecia areata. (4) The authors heard about Dr. Martin Unger’s paper in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, discussing the use of LLLT for hair biostimulation. It was at this time that the authors decided to carry out their own study to determine whether the LLLT - Photomedicine was effective with regard to stimulating hair growth. The authors also wished to determine what affect LLLT had on the tensile strength of hair and undertook to determine this during the same study.

MATERIALS AND METHODS
The devices were composed of closely spaced 650 nm, 5mW laser diodes. The specific parameters were selected for many important reasons.

HAIR REGROWTH AND INCREASED HAIR TENSILE STRENGTH
Hair for the hair counts. Accordingly, they created a clear acrylic mold of each patient’s head, with the front of the mold positioned at the hairline, and a one-centimeter square removed from the mold in the area of greatest alopecia in either the temporal or vertex region (Fig. 3). For the hair count, the hairs within the one square centimeter space were pulled through the opening, and then counted using a surgical skin hook and a lens with five times magnification. Hair counts were carried out by both authors to confirm the accuracy of the data. To test the tensile strength of the hair before treatment and after six months of treatment, three typical terminal hairs were removed from the one square centimeter area and a VIP HairOScope (Belson Imports, Hialeah, FL) used to determine the tensile strength (Fig. 4).

RESULTS
The scientific data for the hair counts is demonstrated in Table 1, and the data for the tensile strength of the hair recorded in Table 2. One-third of the patients did report some temporary slightly increased hair shedding during the first one or two months of treatment, but after two months, this no longer occurred. In summary, Table 1 shows that the hair counts increased in the temporal area an average of 55.2% in women, 74.1% in men, and 69.1% for all patients. In the vertex area, the corresponding percentages were 64.9% for women, 120.1% for men, and 111.9% for all patients.

There was a hair count increase of 93.5% when all temporal and vertex patients were combined. In general, males and the vertex area did the best, but both sexes and all areas did demonstrate significant improvement.

HAIR REGROWTH AND INCREASED HAIR TENSILE STRENGTH
Similarly, in Table 2, the hair tensile strength increased in the temporal area 82.6% in women, 64.4% in men, and 69.3% in both sexes. In the vertex area, the percentages were 71.1% for women, 89.3% for men, and 86.4% for both sexes. The hair tensile strength was increased 78.9% when all temporal and vertex patients were considered. There was greater improvement in the vertex area in males, but more improvement in the temporal area in females. Both sexes and all areas did benefit significantly.

DISCUSSION
In general, the results far exceeded the expectations of the authors, and they were pleased to be able to document the benefits that LLLT with laser hair restoration can achieve for both men and women in both the temporal and vertex regions. Although there were four times as many men as women patients in the study, each sex did demonstrate significant benefits from the LLLT.

The mechanism or mechanisms of action of LLLT are unknown with regard to the stimulation of hair growth or how the hair tensile strength is increased so greatly. From wound healing studies, it is known that LLLT causes an increase in the microcirculation of tissue and a reduction in inflammation.(2) The amount of cellular energy in the form of adenosine triphosphatase (ATP) is also increased following LLLT.(2) Perhaps one or more of these beneficial effects are responsible for the results that we were able to achieve. The authors hypothesized that the early temporary hair shedding experienced by some patients was most likely related to an accelerated hair cycle in general. Obviously, more research is required if we are to fully understand the scientific findings noted in this paper.

CONCLUSION
LLLT – Photomedicine is an effective treatment for stimulating hair growth and increasing the tensile strength of hair in both sexes in both the temporal and vertex regions. In the authors’ opinion, LLLT should be given serious consideration as an option in the treatment of AGA in view of its safety, ease of patient home administration, and the benefits documented in this study.

The effectiveness of low-level laser light in hair restoration was described today by Martin Unger, MD, Toronto, Canada, in a presentation at the 11th Annual Meeting of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS). The ISHRS is meeting October 15-19, 2003, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, New York City.

In clinical trials, 97% of patients have had some benefit in improvement of hair characteristics, stabilization of hair loss, or hair regrowth, Dr. Unger said. Hair regrowth is defined by Dr. Unger and colleagues as an increase of hair count of 11% or more from baseline count.

In the most recently conducted FDA clinical trials of the device, patients studied were men and women with thinning hair in the scalp area. The patients received two low-level laser light treatments per week over a six-month period. Results have shown:

100% of men had stabilization of hair loss in frontal and vertex (top of the head) areas;
84.6% of men had hair regrowth (11% or more from baseline) in the frontal area;
82.8% of men had hair regrowth (11% or more from baseline) in the vertex area;
87.5% of women had stabilization of hair loss in the frontal area;
100% of women had stabilization of hair loss in the vertex area;
75% of women had hair regrowth (11% or more from baseline) in the frontal area; and,
96.4% of women had hair regrowth (11% or more from baseline) in the vertex area.

No side effects of low-level laser therapy have been observed, Dr. Unger said. There have been no reports of eye damage from exposure to low-level laser light.

Patients with medical conditions such as a history of skin cancer, persistent scalp infections, and photosensitivity to laser light were excluded from the study.

Here is some research information:
In 1964, Professor Andre Mester began experimenting with the use of low-power laser energy in Budapest, Hungary.

In his experiments with wound treatment on mice, he noticed rapid healing due to microcirculation of blood supply. This healing was also obvious in Laser Hair Rejuvenation treatment of diabetic patients suffering with dystrophic sores. He was amazed to find sores that would not otherwise heal were healed, and he also observed the appearance of accelerated hair growth and thickening of hair in the treated areas. Today NASA is using Low Level Lasers to heal wounds of their astronauts in space.

This theory through its evolution has since been refined and is widely becoming one of the most popular non-invasive hair loss treatments.

Laser Conference, Helsinki Finland (1993)
An unpublished study presented at Laser Conference, Helsinki, Finland 1993 shows the
effect of LLLT on Androgenetic Alopecia. A double-blind comparative study with placebo
laser for treatment of Hereditary Androgenetic Alopecia in young males was presented
in Helsinki 1993 describing the positive effect of LLLT treatments on hair growth, stop of
hair loss and hair shaft tensile strength.

We have updated our website with photos of the before & after effects of my Botox treatment.

I wanted to soften my lines whilst not looking 'frozen' and therefore too false for my 49 years! The photos have not been altered and are not 'black & white' before pic's as one so often finds in this kind of comparisson.

In both sets of photos, I am smiling or frowning with equal gusto. However, on the 'after' photos you can see that my lines are substantially reduced. I am really happy with the results. I did a video which is on 'youtube' Why not take a look?

I recorded the video last night, to show people the benefits of Botox Anti-Wrinkle Injections.

I had my treatment 4 weeks ago and I am over the moon with it.

Whilst you feel the pricks of the needles it is relatively painless and so worth it in my opinion. I had the area between my forehead and my crows feet lines treated. The whole appointment time is 1/2 hour after the initial telephone consultation with our Aesthetic Doctor-Dr Michel Lauzel. I had to 'not lie down' for 4 hours after treatment and advised not to drink alcohol for the same time.

Whilst I saw some change after 3 days, it can take upto 2 weeks for the full effects to develop. After this time it is advisable to have a checkup to determine if any top-up treatment is required. We had a client who did take 2 weeks to develop the full result, so that was very interesting. This client wishes to remain anonymous so I will call her 'C' and whilst C had an improvement in her lines after a week, another week later-wow what a difference and she is so happy wtih it now.

I still have expression lines in my face and I can move all my facial muscles but the worst of my lines are softened and I think I am looking much younger......I didn't want to go for the 'frozen face' look, I just wanted the lines of the past 4/5 years taken away and they are gone.

I came across this Q & A post whilst I was researching Anti-wrinkle (Botox) practitioners. I particulary wanted a medical Doctor to offer our Botox & Restylane/Juvaderm filler injections. Whilst reading this information below I noted the paragraph which I have now highlighted. I believe it is so important to seek out an experienced practitioner and do be aware that you should be assessed by a doctor who can then issue the prescription for the Botox and not be at the mercy of those who run a 'remote' prescription service. There are moves afoot to prevent these cosmetic injections being delivered by anyone who is not a doctor. Please read through and add your comments.

Q-I am considering having Botox but I am fearful I may end up with a 'Mr Spock' brow and a frozen look. What can I do to prevent this happening?

A-I have spent many an open evening dispelling the myths about Botox, and reassuring first-time clients that they weren't about to be subjected to rat poison! So it is great to answer my first Q&A from an MSN Life & Style reader on something that I have been advocating for years.

For most of you reading this in the major towns and cities across the UK, I'd find it surprising if you don't know of anyone who has had botox - even if you haven't picked up on the normally subtle signs of this very effective anti-aging treatment.

To quickly bring those of you that aren't familiar with Botox up to speed, it's a series of tiny injections that work to temporary relax muscles that are deemed to be too strong for the overlying skin. This can result in the creation of premature lines, which, if left alone and subjected to repeated creasing over a prolonged period, will go on to develop dreaded wrinkles (something that in the UK we spend billions each year trying to prevent).

Most commonly administered for frown lines, horizontal forehead lines and crow's feet, Botox acts at the junction between the muscle and the nerve supplying it, ideally inhibiting the last 10-15% of maximum contraction for up to four months. Though if you're looking at some well-known celebrities, it can inhibit nearly 100% of movement...

But what exactly causes the tails of the brow to lift to create the Mr Spock look? Essentially the natural position of the tail of the brow is determined by the relative tone and opposing actions of the eye muscles underneath, and the forehead muscles above. So, when the sides of the forehead are spared when treating the area adjacent to the temples, the muscle activity that's retained causes the brow to lift immediately below it. Alternatively, when treating crow's feet, a high injection in that area can cause the loss of the natural downward pull, therefore allowing the unopposed forehead muscle to pull up the brow.

The first thing I would point out is that you're likely to be in safer hands if you allocate some time to research to find a reputable and experienced practitioner. We're likely to discuss this in detail in the coming months, but for now, my key recommendation would be to find someone, physician or surgeon that does this day in day out, and (hopefully) experienced enough to accurately predict the subtle differences that can occur in variations of dosage and distribution. This insight will enable them to tailor a treatment plan just right for you.

Secondly, this phenomenon occurs far more often than the most infamous potential adverse event, brow drooping (or Ptosis). Personally, I think this is a direct result of practitioners attempting their best to avoid injecting the region immediately above the tail that could trigger the droop. The good news is that most Spock brows settle themselves within 10 days and are also easily corrected at the 2-week follow-up. There shouldn't be any additional charge for this. Even if you're happy with the result, take up any offer for a free follow-up, as an expert practitioner should be able to identity an area that might need improving upon there and then, or when they see you again in a few months.

To round off for today, if it's done correctly, a tail lift of a few millimetres helps open out tired eyes, and gives a nice look. I'd recommend that when asked about your treatment preferences, be prepared to discuss not only the areas you want treated, but the strength and proposed dosage in each area. Finally, discuss brow shapes, as an experienced Brow-tox practitioner will be able to offer you other variations, such as an arched brow and a flat one too.

The importance of safety in the administration of Anti-wrinkle/line smoothing injections using drugs such as Botox®

“Botox® is a prescription only medication which means that legally it must be prescribed by a doctor. After the prescription has been issued however there is little regulation on who then administers the injection. In the UK it had become common place for a small group of doctors to issue so-called ‘remote prescriptions’ whereby a nurse or a beautician would administer the injection and the doctor would later issue a prescription, taking a share of the profit from the treatment.

Now, however, the General Medical Council (GMC) has recently issued new guidance to doctors on Good Medical Practice regarding the prescription of Botox®. The GMC has stated that doctors must now make a full assessment of any patient being considered for Botox treatment, including assessment of their full medical history prior to issuing a prescription.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has welcomed this decision and stated that nurses who issue Botox® treatments without a written and signed prescription from a doctor who has actually fully assessed the patient, would be in violation of Standards for medicine management.

The move to tighten regulation of this practice has been welcomed by patient safety groups across the Country. If you are considering Botox® treatment there are some simple steps you should take to ensure risks are minimised.

1. See a fully qualified doctor for your initial consultation.

2. Inform the doctor of all details of your past medical history.

3. Ensure the doctor warns you of the risks associated with the treatment (side effects and complication).

4. Ask plenty of questions and don’t feel pressured. Any good doctor will be more than happy to spend time with you to enhance your knowledge of the treatment.

5. Ensure you understand the post-treatment care instructions and what to do, as well as who to contact, should any problems develop.

6. Do not accept any treatment unless you have seen a doctor first”
