Question!

I received a question from Daisha a communications major at Kennesaw State University who asked:

What kind of work do you do for your clients?
As a publicist, it is your goal to raise brand awareness for your client. There are many great products, businesses and services out there, but if no one knows about them, that isn't any good, right? You work as a liaison between the media, pitching them story ideas and trying to get your client included in their magazine or newspaper, or on their website.

Do you work in an office or on the field?
A publicist doesn't work the typical 9-5 hours, sitting in front of a desk. Yes, a majority of your time is spent in front of a computer checking email or speaking to the media on the phone, but you are out and about a lot of the time. You have to go and meet with clients in person, oversee shoots and interviews and even go on press trips. That's why I like PR, because no two days are ever the same!

What kinds of exposure do you get for your client?
The goal is to secure placements for your clients in print (magazines and newspapers), broadcast (TV segments) and online (websites and blogs). You want to ensure that you are able to reach your target consumer, so you have to hit different parts of the media.

You can email your questions to The Publicist at: Jenelle@JenelleHamilton.com xo

I have been working with my client g2 Organics and they have some great natural, eco-friendly beauty products, one of them being the Odorless Nail Polish Remover. I pitched the product to the editors and many were sceptical at first...until they received their sample and realized that in fact, the nail polish remover was indeed odorless!!

We had been working with the Fashion Director at the magazine for this editorial shoot and he requested a selection of Bob Mackie's iconic limited edition Barbie's!

For those of you that don't know, Bob started working with Mattel 21 years ago, producing the first ever limited edition Barbie - basically pioneering the collectors category. As you can see, in the editorial below, there are now dolls created by designers such as Chanel, Christian Louboutin, Vera Wang and Burberry!

Anyway, check out the editorial below (click on the images to enlarge), it's so cool. Each Barbie compliments the clutches they are modeling. Two Bob Mackie dolls are featured - the Cher Barbie is totally working the Emilio Pucci clutch and the Circus Barbie looks ravishing on top of her Bulgari evening bag. A super cute shoot!

Whether it's meeting clients, going for lunches and meetings or just tweeting. I am constantly on my smart phone, so here are the Top 5 iPhone Apps I cannot live without:

1) Twitter - I love Twitter, which can actually make me anti-social, since I am constantly typing on my phone. I downloaded the Twitter app, so I posts update and share useful content while on-the-go. It is super quick and efficient. What I also love, is that you can add multiple Twitter handles/ accounts, so you can manage your client social media projects too.

2) Instagr.am - This is my new obsession. I love this app and the filters. I have dubbed instagram my "PR Cam" so I can share everything I am doing with my followers, you can also interact with the online community, commenting and "liking" images. As they say, sometimes a picture speaks a thousand words.

3) Tip Calculator - Being a publicist, I am constantly eating out, entertaining clients and meeting with editors. After a few, ahem, "drinks" with dinner, my mathematical skills can be somewhat "dodgy". To remedy this, I use the tip calculator, which automatically calculates the bill and how much we should leave for our server. It's a lifesaver!

4) Square - This app is genius! It allows me to accept all kinds of credit card payments from clients and then it deposits the money directly in to my bank account within 1-3 days. Why didn't anyone think of this before? EVERY freelance publicist needs to download it asap.

5) Camera + - This picture editing tool helps me take my Instagram obsession to the next level. You can play around with filters, lighting and crop images. I am in so love with it. Be sure to check it out yourself.

What are your favorite iPhone apps? Please share them :)

So what can we learn from them? Here are 5 Things we can take away and apply to our own brands and clients when it comes to social media:

You need a Facebook fan page: That's a given, since 48% of consumers would be motivated to make a purchase on Facebook if there was an attractive deal. Take a look at Converse for example, they had the highest fan count at 20,184,853.

Utilize video and provide content: But not all self--promotion. What are your followers interested in? Look at DC Shoes, they had the highest number of YouTube subscribers at 143,070. Why? Have you seen their awesome video content! It is very targeted, so I can see why they have so many loyal subscribers. Check it out here.

Engage with fans and customers: Twitter, Facebook - use them regularly to increase your social media presence and following. Threadless had the highest number of Twitter followers at 1,658,501 - watch out Kim Kardashian!

Update your status regularly: No one wants to follow a dormant Facebook page that has little to no content. Look at Troy Lee, they had the highest number of status updates (134) for the month of September

Give your fans something to talk about: You need to provide information that can be shared or liked so your fans friends can see and perhaps they will like your page too. Louis Vuitton for example, had the highest average number of Facebook users talking about this at 259,091! Impressive.

Social Media is a very effective tool in that it gives companies the opportunity to work creatively and provide interactive content for their customers. Think like a fashion brand and provide your fans and followers with a unique experience.

I stumbled across this article recently and it amused me very much, because it was so true! I thought I'd share it with you. How many can YOU relate to?

1. Your day starts and ends with a cup of coffee.

2. You can power-walk in 5-inch heels with your laptop bag while checking your BlackBerry.

3. Inside jokes with your colleagues will get you through the day—especially the insanely stressful ones.

4. You constantly engage in “PR is dead” and “the press release doesn’t have a place in business” arguments.

5. You are so used to putting the client first that you usually forget to eat lunch.

6. It’s detrimental to your health and workday when you forget your headphones.

7. You can toggle among a PowerPoint presentation, a press release, Twitter strategy, and PSA outlines—all in an hour.

8. You recite billing codes in your sleep.

9. You preface Happy Hour with: “Sorry, I need to keep my phone on the table. I have to be connected to email and phone just in case.”

10. You know more about AP style than Microsoft Office. Because of this, you’re a regular in the IT department.

11. You proudly put “PR pro” in your Twitter bio, knowing it’s the one place you don’t have to explain your job.

12. Your speed-dials connect to the CEO, CFO, CIO, CRO, and Arby’s.

13. Your BlackBerry sleeps with you every night. Your better half does not.

14. You no longer count calories—just your re-tweets.

15. You start to rock in your chair when you can't catch a look at your BlackBerry over dinner.

16. “Relax" time is in the shower when you always seem to come up with the best PR pitches.

17. After your coffee, you spend 20 minutes deleting Google Alerts of clients, competitors, and everything in between.

18. Your home number is on your office voice mail "just in case a reporter calls," and non-PR people regularly express surprise that you'd let it out. You don't understand why they even think that.

19. The first thing you do when you start your day is "communications triage," and it often begins at home.

20. Your client wants to be on Oprah. Alternately, you are beyond grateful that this is Oprah's final season—so you never have to hear a client say they want to be on Oprah again.

21. EVERYTHING in your life—from doing the laundry to playing a round of golf—is recorded in your mind in 15-minute billable increments.

22. You set three alarms to rise at 4 a.m. to make the early morning in-studio segment.

23. You engage in weekly conversations with your clients that start with, “Why weren't we included in this WSJ article?”

24. You've heard all the lines about sleep: "Sleep is overrated." "You can sleep all you want when you die." "Do you ever sleep?"

25. You start your day by digging out of client and competitor alerts and checking email, all before you're out of bed.

26. You check HootSuite in the morning before you get out of bed just to monitor what has been said about your clients overnight.

27. Every Friday around 5:00 p.m. you think, “This could be crisis time!” (And sometimes even look forward to a good one.)

28. You know what time it is anywhere in the world and every country's phone code, all without having to look at a reference guide.

29. You're afraid to go more than 15 minutes (max) without checking Twitter/Facebook/news feeds to make sure you're not missing anything.

30. You rely on to-do lists (yes, plural) to get you through your day, but often don't get to cross anything off until 4 p.m. (after managing a few surprise crises).

31. You wake from a dream in the middle of the night, rolling over to grab the pen and paper you keep on your nightstand to jot it down so you won't forget an idea for yet another crazy PR stunt. Work on the mind during the day and work on the mind while you sleep!

32. You can't look at or listen to any form of media without thinking, "My client should be on/in that."

33. My iPhone is my girlfriend. My MacBook Pro, my best friend.

34. You're the only person groaning out loud when reading the paper on the bus. How were we not included?

35. You check your smartphone before brushing your teeth.

36. People have asked you if you sleep in your office and you've actually thought about where you'd put the sleeping bag…if it ever got to that.

37. Checking of smartphones and news becomes an everyday routine before bedtime and in the mornings.

38. You read/hear about a company's crisis and instantly think, "I wonder who their AOR is."

39. You have one copy of the AP Stylebook at work, one at home, one on your Kindle, and the app on your phone.

40. At cocktail parties, you speak in quotable sound bites.

41. You never plan meetings on Fridays afternoons or make personal plans on Friday evenings. You know that “the call" is coming at 4:45 p.m., and everything will need to be dropped anyway.

42. You actually take surveys. It's good client karma, right?

43. You think and speak in 140 characters or less.

44. You call taking any photo a “Photo-op.”

45. Post-it notes are your lifeblood.

46. You almost die if your BlackBerry is sent for servicing!

47. Your friends think you're crazy for your undeniable attachment to your social networks.

48. Client's products are decorations on your desk.

49. You eat every meal at the office and have a shelf dedicated to your favorite snacks, most of which include some kind of protein or snack bar.

50. You work out at 4:00 a.m.

51. You watch televised press conferences for fun and to steal really good talking points.

52. Your morning consists of simultaneously pitching different campaigns, for different clients, across different media markets, and often, in different languages.

53. Something really bad happens and you're the first to announce, "We don't have problems; wehave opportunities."

*A version of this article originally appeared on PR Daily*
I'm Jenelle Hamilton, not anyone else.

A couple of video's from backstage at NY Fashion Week. First, meet my newest client Nelson Vercher, who was the lead hairstylist at the Costello Tagliapietra SS12 Show. You can see the look he created and some bonus pics on my Facebook page here.

Next up, check out this video taken backstage. As you can see, it gets pretty busy with a lot going on. A good publicist is always in the background (NOT center of attention) working and getting ready to connect the editors with their client, so they can interview them. It is not about you, but about your talented client and making sure the right people (editors) are aware of their genius. In this case, Nelson Vercher. Check it out!

Finally, here are some shots for the Costello Tagliapietra SS12 collection. How beautifully does the hair and clothes look together? You can view the complete collection here.

The average person has no idea what a publicist actually does. When you mention that you handle beauty press coverage for brands during NY Fashion Week, it gets even more confusing! So here's a breakdown on what is required for us Beauty PR Pros.

Long before fashion week begins, as a beauty publicist you have to work with your clients to see which shows they will be involved in. Will they be part of the actual hair/makeup/nail teams working backstage? Will they sponsor shows? Will they provide products for the gift bags? If it is September, will they be participating in Fashion's Night Out? Once you know HOW they will be involved, you can start to plan!

Let's tackle the creative team - hair, makeup, nails. Generally found backstage creating the new and hottest looks for the next season. When you are flicking through magazines each month and see the lip color you will be wearing from Spring, or the best nails colors for fall, that is the creative team we publicists, have managed to get press coverage on. So, how do you secure coverage on your clients work?

The first step is to create a targeted media list of who may be interested in attending the show you are working on and featuring your client. Next up, scheduling appointments backstage during the shows with key beauty editors, bloggers and sometime broadcast outlets. The goal is for them to LOVE what your client is doing and blog about it, include in a write up in one of the upcoming issues or feature your client in a broadcast segment. You can also pitch and set-up exclusive feature stories to key media to ensure you get an even lengthier write-up on your client beforehand. Backstage beauty media coverage is extremely hard to secure, as obviously, the focus is mainly on the fashion/ clothes. So make sure you are going to editors with something exciting, new, and a strong client (hairstylist, nail brand, makeup artist etc).

Backstage at the shows, it is your job on the day to make sure that all the confirmed editors' names are on the list at the door - you don't want them being turned away. It is then your responsibility to introduce the editors to your client and most likely the client (although, if they are busy you may need to step in) will take them step-by-step through how to create the look for the show, what inspired them etc.

Post-show, you need to follow up with the beauty media. Send them the company bio/overview and any other relevant info needed to write up a recap. Do they have a step-by-step for each look? Do you have images to illustrate what their work? Do they have the details on what inspired the look and how it compliments the collection. Make sure you are ready to follow up almost immediately after the show to secure maximum short lead (web and newspaper) coverage. The early bird catches the worm.

Regarding sponsorship, it is your role to work with the marketing team to identify appropriate companies and designers to for your clients product or service. Is the company you are partnering with brand appropriate? Will you reach your target customer? Is it the correct alignment for the brand? Not every opportunity is the right opportunity, so think about WHO you are partnering with.

Finally, Fashion's Night Out (FNO)! Introduced only a couple of years ago, this annual event has become a big part of the September shows and kicks of Fashion Week. Again, it is your role as the publicist to identify the correct opportunities for your clients. What will they get from taking part in FNO? How will it help the brands image? These are all the things you should be thinking about before signing up. Essentially it is all about cross-branding and providing a fun service for consumers. You will not make any actual money that night, but brand awareness is priceless.

Overall, Fashion Week is fun, but intense. You'll be working long and unsociable hours (not really new for publicists), you'll lose weight as you won't have time to eat (a definite bonus!) and you have to take the appropriate action steps to ensure you hit all the correct beauty media outlets. It's hard work, but the results are SO worth it.

You can join me on Twitter on Friday September 9, where I will be tweeting live backstage at the Costello Tagliapietra show from Milk Studios. I will also be uploading videos and pics directly to my Facebook page so be sure to check those out.
