Summertime in schools is a when IT folks are the busiest as they get all computers ready before the school opens in September. That is exactly what I did when I started at my new client, Queen City Academy Charter School. However, I couldn't wait for this moment to get all the brand new 3rd Gen iPads ready. I've assisted in the deployment of a few iPads before in another school but this time I am the one in charged and calling all the shots.

I've been tasked to research and find a way to deploy these iPads. After coordinating with our Apple salesperson and after watching webinars and reading all about iPad deployment manuals, I must say that Apple Configurator isn't as easy to use as Apple says it to be. I've used and watched the resources on Apple's Guide to iOS deployment and other resources as well. I've kept Apple's Enterprise toll-free number handy as well.

Setting email addresses to be used for the the volume purchase plans is crucial. You do not want to assign these email addresses to an individual's email addresss. The disadvantage if you do is "what happens when the individual leaves the institution?" You would want to create a generic email addresses associated with the VPP e.g. myschoolVPPprogrammanager@myschooldomain.edu or myschoolVPPprogramfacilitator@myschooldomain.edu.

My workflow:

Unpack the devices from the box (love that fresh iPad smell)
Setup the iTunes account on the Mac to allow the institution's Apple ID for app purchases
Load the iPads to the Bretford Cart with the Mac ready to deploy settings
Setup 1 iPad with all the settings and profiles you want using Apple Configurator on the Mac
Backup this 1 iPad to be restored to the rest of your iPad devices
Restore this 1 image to the rest of your iPad devices
Pray and hope that all goes smoothly with Apple Configurator's deployment process

Using the System's Preference on Apple Configurator I've initially allowed for the iPad Device Name to be visible making the physicial labelling of the device easier. Now, I take my label maker and physically label each of the devices. I also keep a spreadsheet detailing the Device Name with the Serial Number etc. just for documentation purposes.

At the end of school year 2011-2012 when I bid farewell to the wonderful teachers that I had worked with at St. Augustine of Canterbury School in Kendall Park, NJ after working there for 4 years, I realized from their goodbyes that I may have at least inspired one teacher in that school to combat her fears in technology and create that ripple effect on others.

I've been lucky though that I've been considered for a job at one of the most highly advanced public high school in New Jersey, Monroe Township. I've been offered the job on-the-spot by Bishop Ahr High School in Edison as well as St. Thomas the Apostle School in Old Bridge, NJ. In addition, Greater Brunswick Charter School offered me a job as well. However, due to my requirements that there has to be an ample amount of flexibility in my work, I had to turn down all of these offers.

Through the association I formed with the Middlesex Regional Educational Services Commission's Fredrika Glantz-Schwerin, I was offered a position of a consultant to provide professional development workshops at the Piscataway campus or be sent to the different schools that they support. I gladly took the offer.

After seeking advice professionally, I formed my very own consulting firm: Tschang Consulting LLC. It is registered with the State! I am a businesswoman!

Shortly after coming back from a family vacation, I applied for a position as a consultant at the Queen City Academy Charter School. It all worked out just fine. I get to keep 3 clients (South Brunswick School District in addition) and still has the flexibility that I wanted.

QR Codes everywhere

During a family trip to Southern California during the first week of July, even my youngest child noticed that QR Codes were all around us: at the airport, at the Rite Aid pharmacy in La Habra and then at Sea World.

I explained to my youngest child what QR Code is. I let her use the Barcode Scanner app by ZXing on my Droid X2 while we were passing by the Turtle Reef exhibit and saw this QR Code near the entrance

which gave my child 3 options after scanning the code: open in browser, share the link via email, or share it via SMS. This app also creates history of all the codes scanned. This QR Code lets one read more about the Turtle Reef exhibit http://www.seaworld.org/sea-turtles/qr/003.htm. While there are many apps out there to scan codes, this is the one I use the most.

This experience has shown me that this codes make us wonder what it is, where will it lead me, etc. I was thinking of its usefulness in the classroom. Here are just a few of the resources I use when I present QR Codes to educators during PD workshops:

A tech consultant for one week

I had the privileged to work with great minds like that of Mrs. Fucci of Bishop Ahr High School who asked me back in May 2012 to assist her during this week's Bishops Schools, a summer camp funded by the Diocese of Metuchen held at different high schools in the diocese. Mrs. Fucci and myself took turns empowering the 23 soon-to-be 8th grade students 21st century learning skills.

Day 1: I gave the 23 soon-to-be 8th grade students from different schools in the diocese a lesson on Microsoft Publisher. We used it to create a brochure to "sell" Bishop Ahr to prospective parents interested in enrolling their students. Using the Bishop Ahr HS website, we gathered information, and transferred those information to a brochure.

Day 2: Our 4 soon-to-be sophomore BGA student-helpers, Lindsay, Renee, Megan and Jessica, took the lead in today's lesson on PhotoShop. The camp participants learned from Mrs. Fucci different tools such as layers, magnetic lasso, flattening the image etc. Mind boggling and they all loved it.

Day 3: Following the model by Bernie Dodge of San Diego University, we went on an adventure using WebQuest which was later on supplemented with a video conference with the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Alberta, Canada. Our very great presenter, Adrienne Jameson, gave us more information on Dinosaurs during our 45-min distance learning instruction.

Day 4: First part of the morning, Mrs. Fucci showed the camp participants how to use Microsoft Excel to tabulate results and create graphs. After the morning break, I presented to camp participants how to use Windows Live Movie Maker. I told the camp participants to pretend that they have been employed by the Royal Tyrrell Museum to create a video to be shown to visitors of the museum. We learned skills such as adding the photos they created/edited on Photoshop, put sounds, insert a video, trim a video, animation, special effects, etc.

Day 5: The camp participants learned how to type a business thank you letter to be sent to Ms. Jameson, our distance learning instructor. Lastly, Mrs. Fucci showed the camp participants how to use PowerPoint by incorporating the videos (now in WMV format) they created from Day 4.

Follow Through

On my last day at school, I got to do what I love the most: providing professional development. Following-up with the teachers to make sure that they learned from the previous lesson is crucial. I use this session to find out what they did not quite fully understand from our previous lesson and also as a way for the teachers to ask me for more skills to learn.

Today I had the opportunity to work with Mrs. Lavad and showed her how she can use her lessons created on PowerPoint on the SMART Board. I modeled for her how she can use the pens to answer the prompt she may want the class to answer on the board. She then asked me how she could print the students work after they have answered the prompt on the SMART Board. Great question! I showed her the skill on how to use then.

The last half-hour, I was her student. She showed me the skills she has learned from our one-on-one tutorials. It gave me so much joy to see that she is now equipped with this knowledge and to see that she is getting comfortable with using this technology tool is a pat on the back.

I was told that the projector connected to the laptop in one of the classrooms was projecting with a purplish-colored background. I then gathered my screw drivers and went to investigate the issue.

The Epson LCD Projector Model EMP-33 was indeed showing a purplish-colored background. I tried logging in as an admin network and local user and also tried non-admin network user logins but the same result happened.

I then borrowed a ViewSonic PJ556D working projector and its peripheral 15-pin VGA cable from one of the classrooms in the middle school. I then plugged it in to the Dell laptop on the cart using its peripheral 15-pin VGA cable. The image projected DID NOT have the purplish-colored background.

So to use the process of elimination, I then plugged in the Epson LCD Projector Model EMP-33 with the 15-pin VGA cable that was used with the ViewSonic PJ556D and the image projected DID NOT have the purplish-colored background.

I then scouted for a spare 15-pin VGA cable in the computer lab and found one successfully. After testing it with the Epson LCD Projector Model EMP-33, issue is now closed.

What I discovered was that the 15-pin VGA cable that was originally connected to the Epson LCD Projector was missing not one but two pins!

One-On-One Lesson to Use SMART Board in Foreign Language

One of my duties, which I love to do, is to provide professional development either as a workshop, in-class support or during a one-on-one session with the teachers either during their prep time or after school.

I worked today with our Spanish teacher who is new to the school. She has been patiently waiting for me to give her a one-on-one tutorial on how she could incorporate technology in her classroom. Using at least 2 class periods today, as some of the upper middle school kids were not around, gave us the opportunity to work on the SMART Board.

I showed her how to search for interactive lessons created on SMART Notebook software through SMART Exchange. I modeled for her how she can use the filter so that she could find age and grade appropriate lessons. I also showed her how to download it on her flash drive as it would be beneficial to have the lesson downloaded, after previewing it, in case the internet is down for that day. At least, the lesson can still be presented as she won't have to rely on the internet connection. She also learned, after I modeled it for her, how to use the pen and her finger to drag objects on the interactive board.

It was a bitter-sweet moment for me as my very last distance learning program with NASA happened today. As a proponent of distance learning and instrumental in bringing learning beyond the four-wall of the classroom, I have been privileged to have collaborated with the great minds at NASA to bring excitement in students learning.

Today, as Mr. Damon Talley of the Kennedy Space Center, asked me to come into view in the Polycom HDX7001 Video Conference unit so that he could thank me for the many programs that I have signed-up for to bring science, math and dreams to the teachers and the students, I was the one who felt truly honored to have been involved in the learning process.

SMART Document Camera 101

Due to a previous commitment earlier this month, I was not able to attend the workshop that was provided by Carolyn Bennett of Keyboard Consultants for the SMART Document Camera.

Today, I gave myself a tutorial on how to use the SMART Document Camera so that I could then train the teachers on how to use it effectively in the classroom. One of the things that I found challenging which most of the teachers would perhaps do as well is that there are now a whole bunch of wires that you need to know which one goes where. One could easily get confused when installing the SMART Document Camera. Luckily, we have a dedicated SMART Document Camera per SMART Board that the school owns through IDEA-B funding. To solve the issue, I then took my new best friend, label maker!

After reading the documentation online and following the few steps necessary to make it work, I then explored how to use it with the SMART Notebook software. I later on ventured into using the Microscope Mode which would greatly benefit the Science Lab.

The highlight of this adventure was using the SMART Notebook 3D Tools & Mixed Reality Tools. Using a rubix cube-like tool called mixed reality cube, I was able to navigate and manipulate 3D scenes.

Unconference in NJ by NJAET

Thanks to my Twitter friend, Dave Zirkle @davezirk, I learned about tabCamp, an unconference though NJAET. Driving early on 130 South on a Saturday morning was pleasant without all the traffic one faces during the work week. As I arrive at Stone Bridge Middle School in Allentown, NJ, I was in awe at the magnificently new building which was very appealing not only for it being new but it is constructed with the technology infrastructure in place to accommodate 21st Century Learning atmosphere.

I was greeted in the dining hall where breakfast was being served by Dave and we met in person - finally! Then we moved on to different classrooms to learn about mobile devices, how to implement it successfully and what to avoid. I especially liked the presentation by Barbara De Santis of Sayreville School District where she presented what she would have changed if she if given another chance too introduce mobile device in a school environment.

My husband has always say that I am lucky when it comes to raffles and promotional prizes. And today was another manifestation of how lucky I really am. At the end of the unconference, iTunes cards were awarded to a few attendees and I was one of the lucky winner for a $10 iTunes card. Yipeee! To my amazement, I was chosen as one of the 3 grand prize winners to be awarded with free registration for the 2012 ISTE in San Diego, CA at the end of June. Now, all I have to figure out is how much airfare and hotel would cost :)

NJ Kid Tech Day 2012

I am honored to have trained Mrs. Shirley Scamardella (shirley.scamardella@gmail.com) who through constant use of technology in her classroom has proven that the idiomatic expression "old dogs can't learn new tricks" is purely a saying!

Through Lisa Thumann's post on LinkedIn in early March, I came across West Essex Tech Symposium where she will be one of the three keynote speakers. Later on, Lisa gave me a survey via Google Form on how technology is being used at the school where I work.

Driving through the empty I-287 with dense fog didn't stop me to attend this symposium even on a day where I would have preferred to have stayed in bed. It's Saturday!!! Yet, I am honored to be part of Lisa's presentation today, March 17th. My name together with other educators who have technology success stories were featured in Lisa's presentation.

I listened with more enthusiasm as ever as I marvel at how energized and inspired Eric Sheninger's presentation on Leadership 2.0 and how he transformed his school to be what it is now through technology. I listen intently to Patrick Higgins Jr.;s presentation "Now You Know, Now You Are Obligated" and how I could relate to his stories about his first job's salary and later on had the chance to actually talk to him at the parking lot.

Staying abreast with the latest in technology

I am always attracted to FREE Breakfast. Whenever I book for our family vacation's hotel, I always ask if there's free breakfast with the price. It makes my family member wonder though because I am a breakfast skipper :)

Therefore when I found out through a colleague of mine from another school that Rutgers Center for Mathematics, Science and Computer Education (CMSCE) is offering iPad training with FREE Breakfast, I signed up immediately.

Kathy Scharaldi was an awesome presenter together with Judy Bornstein. The presentation was well organized. Thank you!

Read Around The Planet 2012

For the past 3 years, we have participated in Read Around The Planet. This year, new teachers who have never done this project showed interested for the first time. All the behind the scenes tasks of test calling, rescheduling of video conference, making sure that the "bridge" is ready as part of plan B in case the actual connection does not work or maybe bypass the firewall...all of those, are the things I do with our Polycom HDX 7001 unit.

This year, we connected with classes as far as Wisconsin and almost every year, we have partner schools in Virginia, South Carolina, Michigan and Texas.

Testing, testing, 123

When teachers come to a video conference/distance learning program that they had signed up for or had told me that they were interested in being part of, tasks such as:

Test Calls Scheduling
Test Calls Re-Scheduling
Plan B...maybe re-start the unit? It works at times on computers
Re-Scheduling of Actual Event...partner teacher is sick? or school is closed (weather related)
Alternative to Plan B...possibly using a bridge to make the connect or check the firewall

are things that I do and coordinate behind-the-scenes. With the Read-Around-The-Planet 2012 coming very soon, all of these things listed above are making my days very, very hectic. Then you realize that one of the partner schools are in a different time zone, or that both of you and your partner schools have video conferencing unit that can only dial-out. What do you do? You stop, then breathe. Then you are recharged with more energy to deal with the issues.

I must say though that through all of these challenges in video conferencing, it has been a truly learning moment for me from the first day when I proposed this to the administrators. Below is a picture of our video conferencing / distance learning room:

Truly a historical moment in our school. On Digital Learning Day, February 1st, the school was recognized as one of the 11 schools in the State of New Jersey to be part of Kid Tech Day 2012. Our school's work on "Historical Fiction Picture Books".

In this project given by Mrs. Shirley Scamardella (shirley.scamardella@gmail.com), Middle School Language Arts Teacher, the students were divided into groups of five and six students. Groups worked collaboratively to create a project which required every member's input and participation, and required them to draw from their knowledge across a variety of disciplines, including history, language arts, politics, and art.

Groups were tasked with writing a Historical Picture Book as part of a culminating first semester project infusing technology into the curriculum. The books were of such high quality of creativity that they were entered into the Kids Are Authors contest sponsored by Scholastic Books.

Collaboratively, each student shared their Historical Picture Books with students from around the nation by videoconferencing.

Latin LIVE From France

When Bishop George Ahr High School, part of the Diocese of Metuchen schools, first offered us this opportunity in the early part of last year, all were excited to get started. However, the idea of teaching Latin via video conferencing from a teacher who lives in France almost got wasted.

My mom tells me that I was a very impatient child. I guess, as you grow older you learn to adapt to be patient. Well, being patient in this case has its rewards. Thanks to the people who made this possible and to the technology that the Diocese of Metuchen schools have.

On January 25th marks the beginning of Latin class being given as an enrichment subject to selected students. Read this article from the South Brunswick Post about it.

Coming to you live from the iPad Man

I was privileged to have been invited to attend the iPad Basic for Special Ed Workshop sponsored by the Middlesex Regional Education Services Commission in Piscataway, NJ. Thank you to Fredrika Glantz-Schwerin who has given me this opportunity and for recognizing my love of learning technology for classroom integration.

The iPad Basic for Special Ed Workshop was given by Andre Downer of Apple Inc. and Loralee Bermudez, Adjunct Professor for Speech Pathology & Audiology from Stockton College.

As one of the two tech specialists at the workshop, I learned a lot of how iPad can be transform a learner with disability to someone who is actually engaged in learning. Accessibility Options were discussed and other things that I did not know about which address different levels of disability.

I am so glad that I came to attend this workshop since I have no education degree background nor experience working with special ed learners. What an eye opening experience. My next job now is to impart this knowledge to the teachers that I mentor at work and hopefully they too will gain a better awareness and perspective when dealing with special ed learners.

Wikispaces 101

I am honored to be one of the four presenters at today's Principals Leadership Meeting at the Diocese of Metuchen Office of Schools. The main focus of today's meeting is for the school leaders to be aware of what the current trend in technology is out there that schools could avail of.

My task was to present the use of wiki as a collaborative tool. I used Wikispaces. I had to present my presentations to all the principals and schools administrators present. I had to do it 4x.

I also used another free Web2.0 tool for my presentation, SlideRocket, so that they can see this tool as well. Issues such as WiFi connectivity were encountered as some of the mobile devices cannot get to the internet. I kept my presentation simple an concise. Questions such as the pros and cons of wiki vs. blog was discussed.

What was great was that as I was showing the principals and school administrators the wiki as a collaborative tool, most of them (at least those that got online) were typing message on the wiki page that I left open for collaboration. Some real time workshop interaction!

Blue Screen of Death

We all dread seeing this...

Mine happens to be today, January 4th, my first working day of 2012.

I got this note on my desk from a teacher asking for help. At first, I said to myself, "Why am I getting this troubleshooting request - in PAPER form?" I've automated the tech issue log so that reporting is done at real time and no trees are cut down. Then it occurred to me that of course the teacher has no way of reporting the issue because her PC got this blue screen of death.

So my first day of work in 2012 was met with this issue. I just hope that the rest of 2012 will not be so fearful as this one.

iPad Basic....taking baby steps

As part of the long process, I was tasked to present to all the educators in my school today a basic workshop for the iPad2. Our school, with the vision of our administrators, embarked on this adventure to have the teachers "play" with the iPad2 before it can be launched school-wide in the future. The objective is for the teachers to learn the basic and get the students engage in learning with the tools that they are already accustomed to at home.

Equipped with the latest iOS version, I demonstrated just the basic skills with the iPad2 User Guide as my guide. Some of the basic gestures with the fingers were modeled as well.

All throughout the workshop though, I find myself touching the SMART Board where I have projected my presentation (see above). I have to remember that it isn't interactive on the SMART Board so I re-traced my steps and head back to my iPad and touch the screen!

Collaborative storytelling for all ages

Back in the summer of 2011, our Language Arts teacher told me that she is interested to learn how to use Storybird in her classrooms. So my last 2 in-house technology workshops have focused on collaborative storytelling. After reading reviews from other ed tech specialists and after trying the tools myself, I came to conclusion that Storybird is more suitable for students from 3rd grade on. I then looked for a tool geared for the younger audience, PreK to 2nd grade. And so I found Little Bird Tales. The best part is that both tools are free and provides a safe learning environment for the kids as there are no ads/banners/advertisements.

Flexibility to accommodate changes

We've used NASA's DLN programs and this is now our 2nd year collaborating with them. However, this is our first time to have a distance learning from the Glenn Research Center in Ohio. Pretty interesting. Mr. David A. Mazza, DLN Education Specialist/Technology Specialist was very helpful in scheduling and accommodating changes in time, length of the program as there were last minute conflict with school activities.

The 3rd graders really enjoyed "The Moon" program. These are the same children who were first immersed into the distance learning programs that I initialized in 2009.

As the before-the-scenes event, I had to find distance learning programs that tie in to the NJ Core Curriculum Standards as well as the ISTE - NETS standards for global learning in the digital age. Once a program is found, we send in a request for the program and wait for NASA to approve it. Once it is approved, confirmation and test calls are needed. Then comes the day when I have to make sure that the distance learning room is ready and that the Polycom unit is working properly. It is always advisable to try to connect 10-15 minutes early in case there are technical difficulties and that is just what we did today and luckily, it all went smoothly.
