Website sound and video - Tool or Nuisance

There is a boom in website audio and video. Advancements in streaming and high speed bandwidth in the last few years has given rise to great quality in sight and sound. This can be a great tool in your business. Someone can get details about your service or product right from your website.

For the marketing “GURUs” and those studying marketing stratagies, I got a bone to pick! When surfing traffic exchanges, am I the only one that gets annoyed with sites that start playing as soon as I get there? Sucking up my bandwidth and blasting me with sounds from music to screams. I am intelligent enough that if I want to hear the message, I can start it. To me this is equivilant to spam. Or coming in my house and turning my TV to your favorite commercial. Does this encourage me to listen to your message?

Does a sports car spinning out make me want to rush and sign-up for an over-hyped product? Will a loud version of your favorite jaw shattering tune make me trust your product or service or judgement? Does a clip of your product in a news story give me the details I want?

A little common sense goes a long way here.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it is a very helpful tool. I use a lot of audio and video in training and learning the inside workings of a program. But I start the presentation when I am ready to hear or see it. My subscribers at HotBizTips can even download the package to get audio on their site for free. I know of people that may surf while in a conference room. Personally I listen to a couple of different radio stations from the web as I am surfing traffic exchanges. And when these sites come BLASTING their message as soon as the page is loaded, sometimes more than one page at a time, it is a little less than impressive to say the least.

I have a couple of warnings for you, More Than Traffic and forum spamming.

First the Scam Alert

I have had a couple of subscribers ask my opinion of a service making it’s rounds on the internet. My first rule of thumb applies, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

New Spam Threat Hits 90,000 Sites – Is Yours Next?

On Tuesday I received 423 emails from an unknown spammer
attacking my site.

On Wednesday I received 789 emails from the same spammer.

Action had to be taken.

The emails were copies of posts to my discussion forum – the typical spammers posts – keyword stuffing, numerous
hyperlinks to junk sites crammed with even more keywords.

It was clear I was being hit by one spammer, with an
automated script, for a number of telltale reasons:

1) Nobody could post 789 posts to a forum in 24 hours
manually

2) All posts were from random .co.za email addresses (South
African domains, but likely false)

3) All posts pointed to very similar spammy sites obviously
made with the same auto-generation software

4) Checking various domains promoted within these posts in
WHOIS showed they were all owned by a certain guy in Paris

I carefully combed my forum for these junk posts but
couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary. So I checked for
posts by .co.za email addresses, or French IPs but couldn’t
see a problem anywhere.

Where were they coming from, and where were the posts?

To help me in my quest I did a search on Google for the
text that began every email which read:

“The following was posted in the on
”

But couldn’t find any links that were any help.

So next I investigated the content of the emails for common
factors and found the following Javascript snippet began
every message body:

“var defDoor”... before launching into other Javascript
elements, followed by the keywords and links.

I wonder…

A quick search on Google and two factors astonished me…

1) Google showed up 92,600 pages with this code on, of
which every one I checked matched the exact spam posts I
was seeing in style and content. So we were dealing with a
professional of some magnitude.

2) They were all on forums, but not the one I used, but
WWWBoard as available from
http://www.scriptarchive.com/wwwboard.html

A quick search with my FTP software through the bowels of
my admittedly large site that has been online for 5 years
or so and has seen more reworkings than Pamela Anderson
showed I had got WWWBoard installed on my site but had
stopped using it years ago in place of my current forum
software.

I had completely forgotten about it, and there were the
hundreds of spam posts sitting there on my server!

Obviously I don’t use the script so instantly deleted it
and the spamming stopped dead overnight but if I’m one of
over 90,000 victims this guy has duped then a little advice
is necessary:

1) Appreciate that there are security flaws to WWWBoard and
you either need to watch your forum very carefully or
consider switching to another script.

2) Don’t leave old scripts sitting around on your server
waiting for spammers to abuse them. Use them, or delete
them.

3) Try to avoid using obvious folders for scripts. Whilst I
didn’t link to my old forum from anywhere on the site, it
was in an obvious folder so a spammer (or a script) could
easily have guessed it.

4) Realise that security threats are very real if you get
reasonable traffic and take steps in advance to minimize
the risk to your own site.

I have recommended AVG as a great FREE antivirus. It is still a great FREE antivirus program. But, as an internet marketer surfing traffic exchanges and all the crud that some people choose to put out there, there were still javascript install programs being placed on my computer. This wasn't a big problem since AVG would find them if they started doing anything or when I scanned.

Instant messaging and peer-to-peer fans are being hit with
more worm and malicious code attacks than ever before,
according to research reports.

The number of threats detected for IM and peer-to-peer
networks rose a whopping 3,295 percent in the third quarter
of 2005, compared with last year, IMlogic said in a
statement Monday. That brings the total year-to-date
increase for 2005 over the previous year to 2,083 percent,
the security software maker said.

And as the attacks increase in number, they also get
smarter, IMlogic said. Worm writers are coming up with more
effective ways to get people to click on links to their
malicious code, and worms can increasingly hop from one IM
network to another, it noted.

The numbers echo data reported by Akonix Systems, a rival
vendor of IM security products. Last week, Akonix said it
identified a record 25 IM pests in September, with seven new
threats. The number of attacks in the third quarter
averaged just more than one per day, Akonix said.

Microsoft's IM network is the most popular target, with 62
percent of all attacks detected in the third quarter hitting
MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger, IMlogic said. America
Online's system is second on the list, with 31 percent
affecting AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) or ICQ. Only 7 percent
of the reported threats went after Yahoo Messenger users,
according to IMlogic.

Experts have advised IM users to be careful when clicking on
links that arrive in instant messages--even if they seem to
be from people they know.

Businesses can use products from various providers,
including IMlogic, Akonix and FaceTime Communications, to
protect against IM pests and manage IM usage.

Basic Points When Designing Your Webpage or Site

When designing your site, or re-vamping it focus
on your visitors’ desires, not on yourself. They
want to know what's in it for them, not that you
won an award for your business. For example, don't
make your ad mostly about what you have done, make
it about what benefits the reader will get for
buying from you, or signing up on your list.

Keep it simple and smooth-flowing. Try not to get
caught up in loading your site up with a lot of bells

each issue you publish. This may also help you
increase the number of people who subscribe to
your e-zine. You could also allow people to use your
